List of Nominees for the 84th Academy Awards Released

I think the Artist wasn't hat great but it's the perfect movie for the over-aged academy award comity.

The good old days, before the evil computers, internets, video games and all this crap. Movies were everything and everybody wanted to work in Hollywood.

So it will win a lot.

I don't get this. 'The Artist' was far more creative/risk-taking/whatever than 90% of modern films these days.

I'm assuming "the one shot" being the amazing chase scene in the city that never stopped?
Yup.

"The Academy are made up of people mostly over the age of 50 whose idea of a fun night out is having their driver take them to the Academy theater where they get to sit in their comfortable seats, have some wine afterwards and then be driven back home. These are not people who live in the real world. They never have been.

These are their choices in their secret club. We’re allowed only to pull up a chair and watch. Some of us are smart enough to grab a bucket of popcorn and view the Oscars as theater. But we must never fall into the trap of thinking they mean anything." - SS

You don't know two things about the film industry do you?

Firstly. If you want to just throw out any and all metrics that can be used to judge a films success/reception be my guest....but it is a deluded tactic used by people who know they can't back up their claims and as a result want to tear down other who can. Personal opinion is fine but don't hold it up as an equal to actual statistics when it is clearly not.

I have not seen Rango so I really can't speak to it.

Lastly. If TinTin made a profit it was a razor thin one. The only budget I could find for TinTn was 135 million which is plausible....if on the low end of most big budget Ani films. Kung fu Panda has an advertising budget of 100 million though lets scale that down to 50 million for TinTin though that is a bit low imo. So a total hypothetical budget of 185 million at the low end. When a film is released about 15-30% of the grosses go to theaters. Each week that grows to encourage the theaters to keep running the film. Unfortunately we don't have any access to exact numbers but we do know that generally its accepted that by the end of a films run about 35-40% of the gross goes to the theaters. So on the high end of the gross kept it would be around 230 million.

That only leaves 45 million. Then you have to take into account that all the various distributors take a cut if they used outside distribution in some foreign markets (almost a given since no distributor operates anywhere). Then generic studio expenses not included in budget (running the studio administration). I have no clue whether the big name directors or produces get a % cut so I won't speculate at that but you get where I am going.

The profit made by TinTin is pitiful at best from theaters. They will make some money from merchandising and dvd sales but the amount will be far smaller than equivalent films released recently....and keep in mind I erred on the side of profitability on every single calculation. If some of those were on the other side the film could easily still be a loss.

My guess is that it is personal desire to produce more films....rather than financial sense....that is driving the sequel talk. This performance would not warrant a sequel from any of the other major studios.

This is all fine and dandy, but Tintin was a great animated movie.

That's about films making the larger nomination list though, isn't it? Tintin made it to at least the semi-finalist stage I believe. It didn't make the final cut.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't make the cut for similar reasons - there are plenty in the animation branch of the Academy who still aren't comfortable about the use of motion capture in animation, and that could have affected their voting in determining the finalists. I believe it was mentioned in another thread that people like Brad Bird are pretty vocal about it.

10 films nominated now and yet they still cant get it right, SMH!!!

Dark Knight would have been left out even with the 10 film thing.

I agreeish. I never disputed that it was good.

The conversation started over people acting like it not getting a Nom was a huge snub and the film has been a massive success. When neither is really the case.

The Oscars are (supposedly, but we all know otherwise) about the best movies, not the biggest hits. Whether Tintin made 500 bucks or 500 million bucks has no bearing on whether or not it can be considered a snub.

And the reviews show that TinTin aren't that great even without grosses. its reviews have been mediocre at best. 68/74%

I hate being "that guy," but I guarantee 99% of the people bitching about The Artist have never seen it and have no intention of seeing it; they're too busy masturbating to their Gosling power fantasy of driving around LA and banging women you don't have to have conversations with.

LMFAO!!! ITS TRUE, ITS SO FUCKING TRUE BWBWBWBWBWBABAAAAAAHAHAHAH!!!

no Reznor and Fassbender got me miffed.

But then we have so much Tree of Life in the nominees that I can't really get mad at this list lol.

And oh well, Fassbender will get his nomination when that dogshit oscarbait Noah's Ark film comes out from Arnoasofky

edit: eh I made it a little too obvious how much I don't like that director...

I don't get this. 'The Artist' was far more creative/risk-taking/whatever than 90% of modern films these days.

Risk taking, well not really. There is a working system of public financed movie production in europe. If you are in the system you don't have to be that successful as long as you are critically acclaimed.

And creative, well Mel Brooks already did a silent movie quite some time ago. And if the story was that creative, I don't know.

Yes, because that's all what younger people are watching.

It would have been terrible if movies like the Dark Knight or District 9 would have won the Oscar for best movie.

I feel like a lot of pretentious crap winning stuff is just as bad. If we don't have a year when a "godfather" comes out I feel like they just shouldn't hold the awards.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close over Dragon Tattoo and Drive? Fucking really academy? No Reznor??? Lol.

A Cat In Paris looks interesting, never heard of it before this.

I'm pretty happy that Rundskop ( Bullhead ) got nominated. I'm a student at the film school where the director teaches and also used to be a student.

It's a great movie btw. If you haven't seen it be sure to give it a try. It's a story unlike what you would ever see in an American film. It's not pretentious btw.

It probably wont win though. But a nomination is ok in my book.

My Guesses & hopes, if they seem off, it's because it's a hope / haven't seen it.

Drive in a nutshell.

None of these posts makes any sense whatsoever.

Really? That dude's post was retarded but it did make sense. Ryan Gosling's entire human interaction involved *I'm so cool so I'm gonna take a while to respond*

When people say he should have been nominated it baffles me. I'm still not sold on Gosling outside of Half Nelson to be honest. He's a good leading man but not that good of an actor yet.

Brad_Pitt_300.jpg

About time he's won one

Yeah forreal, but I was talking about the other guy's post (the one with all the retarded caps and stuff). There certainly was no banging but the relationship between Carey Mulligan and Gosling was bizarre as hell.

I am really beginning to think the Weinstein and Scorcese group pay the Academy to get awards/nominations.

Also I find it highly convenient that in every Oscar year there is ONE actor/actress who has never won and finally wins adding to the drama

I didn't find much love for Awkward Pauses: The Movie either, but I'm also not remembering much sex scenes. Perhaps that got edited out of my version.

I wasn't a fan of drive either.

It wasn't a bad movie. But to me it had a lot of wasted potential. It just felt empty. There was hardly any character depth and bad pacing. 1/4th of the movie was Ryan Gosling staring. And as a european film student I'm used to watching art films.
I liked the idea of seeing car scenes like that in a movie like this though. It was a pretty original concept. But like I said. A lot of wasted potential.

GARY FUCKIN' OLDMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!

That'a boy!
Probably asking for too much for the Academy to finally recognize him with the actual award, though.

Should have never admitted he was a conservative all those years ago. :/

Please let this be the new "Three 6 Mafia has an Oscar and Martin Scorsese doesn't"!

Billy Zabka (Johnny Lawrence from The Karate Kid) has the same number of Oscar nominations as Gary Oldman!
In 2004, he was nominated for an Academy Award for co-writing and producing the film, "MOST".

Don't get me wrong. Zabka is fucking awesome!

I think this is the first year I have not seen a single movie nominated for best picture. I can't quite put my finger on it, but Hollywood simply did not motivate me to get my ass to the theatre.

Okay....I enjoyed Incredible Loud and Extremely Close. It's not best picture in any sense but it was better than a lot of movies this year. I didn't feel manipulated by the movie and still enjoyed the story. Probably because I work with Asperger people....?

Hahaha, Jonah Hill is now an Oscar Nominated Actor :lol

I hope Michelle Williams finally gets her Oscar!

Awesome to see Max von Sydow getting a nomination.

Hope Scorsese gets the Best Directing and Woody for Best Screenplay. Not really sure who I'm rooting for Best Actor, haven't seen The Artist yet, but my guess its between Dujardin and Clooney, and Clooney wasn't really that exceptional in The Decendents, just good.

Why is War Horse nominated for Best Cinematography? It was fucking awful (except for the no mans land scenes), felt so cheap and fake. Lubezki should win this easily.

No nomination for shame, steve mcqueen, michael fassbender, take shelter, michael shannon, nicolas winding refn, drive, or Trent Reznor. Well done, academy.

Edit- and how is berenice bejo a supporting actress? Oh, right, because the academy wants her AND meryl streep to win, for whatever reason. Lots of money from weinstein, I guess.

Not to worry. Spencer has Best Sup. Actress locked up. As for Best Actress...let's wait until after the SAGs on Sunday night

I haven't seen any of the Best Picture nominees? Holy crap. Really want to see Tree of Life, Hugo, and Midnight In Paris though.
