Actor in a Leading Role
Demián Bichir in A Better Life - haven't seen
George Clooney in The Descendants - good but I thought he was better in Up in the Air
Jean Dujardin in The Artist - yeah he was really good in this, fair play. The dog was better though LOL
Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - fantastic, should win hands down
Brad Pitt in Moneyball - meh, he was much better in Tree of Life.
Gosling should have been nominated for something, but split his vote in all likelihood.
Actor in a Supporting Role
Kenneth Branagh in My Week with Marilyn - I've always liked Branagh, thought he was pretty good in this
Jonah Hill in Moneyball - he was okay. I can only think he got in because he's a comedic actor that was better than expected in a dramatic role.
Nick Nolte in Warrior - excellent. I wasn't a huge fan of the film but the acting was great.
Christopher Plummer in Beginners - Plummer's always been a favourite of mine, was fantastic in Beginners.
Max von Sydow in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - von Sydow was good in a terribly written part.
Brooks should have been in instead of Hill, and probably Hardy or Strong from Tinker Tailor instead of Branagh.
Actress in a Leading Role
Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs - good, but showy Oscar bait.
Viola Davis in The Help - good, but showy Oscar bait.
Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - she was very good but Rapace was better so I'd be pissed if I was her.
Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady - FUCK MERYL STREEP SHE HAS ALL THE SUBTLETY AND EMOTIONAL CONNECTION TO AN AUDIENCE OF A UNSUBTLE AND EMOTIONLESS SACK OF TURD
Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn - brilliant, probably my choice but perhaps a bit of a caricature.
Actress in a Supporting Role
Bérénice Bejo in The Artist - fantastic, probably my choice. Also hot.
Jessica Chastain in The Help - better in Tree of Life, but pretty good in this. Also hot.
Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids - she was good but getting more praise than Wiig (who deserves it more) purely because she's fat, ergo funny. Also hot?
Janet McTeer in Albert Nobbs - better than Close.
Octavia Spencer in The Help - Emma Stone will be pissed, was the best in the cast.
Directing
Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist - workmanlike direction, great that he wrote it but nothing special about the direction.
Alexander Payne for The Descendants - same here; I think he's being rewarded for the film as opposed to the actual direction (I know this kind of means the same thing, but the script and acting are better than the sum of its parts)
Martin Scorsese for Hugo - yeah Scorsese directed the shit out of this movie, my choice.
Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris - his best film in years.
Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life - again, fantastic direction.
Tomas Alfredson should be there instead of Payne for Tinker Tailor.
Best Picture
The Artist - very good film, solidly entertaining but so much like Singin' In The Rain it's unreal. Will win - 3.5/4
The Descendants - good film but like I say, there's a great script and great acting but the film's a little empty - 2.5/4
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - just the most vacuous and morally bankrupt movie, Oscar bait so obvious it's ridiculous - 0.5/4
The Help - well made but so on the nose and predictably Oscar - 2/4
Hugo - fantastic film, Scorsese's best since No Direction home and possibly Goodfellas - 4/4
Midnight in Paris - Woody's best film in ages but a bit slight to be a contender - 3/4
Moneyball - pretty average film, maybe I have to be American to love it - 2/4
The Tree of Life - loved it when I saw it but I have no desire to see it again - 3/4
War Horse - rubbish, the play's much better. Only Hiddlestone and Cumberbatch leave with any credit - 1.5/4
One fucking space left and out of spite they can't find any room for Tinker Tailor, Drive or Fast Five. Suck my gooch Academy.
