List of Nominees for the 84th Academy Awards Released

Since the best animated movies of the year weren't eligible, I'm taking solace in the fact that, while the Academy didn't rebound from last year, they nominated 2 good animated shorts for the final 5. 2 of them are horrible, and there were 6 or 7 that I'd consider very good that didn't get past the longlist. There were no great or excellent ones nominated, but I would be happy with:

Wild Life, by the famous Wendy Tilby (she's quite good but overrated, I think)

Sunday, by a new man

Those are up for a limited time. Watch them so that you don't just seek out La Luna.

Norbit (2007) starring Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy, and Eddie Murphy was an oscar nominee. how soon are the awards, late february? Hope that comes fast.
Not a mind blowing selection but there are some epic movies comming out this year, so next years Oscars should be pretty kick ass.

few of the great movies coming out this year will be nominated for awards. In fact I'll post it now:

"wtf Gravity only got Sound Mixing? Fucking bullshit. and where the hell is cogan's trade?"

I'm curious - how did Tree of Life haters feel about The Fountain?

I haven't seen Tree of Life but I don't see how you can compare a Malik film with The Fountain. The Fountain is not some minimal storytelling beautiful art piece, it's an actual story based narrative film with an interesting plot, nice visual look, and good score. The Fountain is basically Xenogears in film form without the robots. Malik's stuff is as far from videogame-like as possible from what I've seen of his works.

No nomination for shame, steve mcqueen, michael fassbender, take shelter, michael shannon, nicolas winding refn, drive, or Trent Reznor. Well done, academy.

Edit- and how is berenice bejo a supporting actress? Oh, right, because the academy wants her AND meryl streep to win, for whatever reason. Lots of money from weinstein, I guess.

take shelter had such a limited release that not even members of the academy got to see it.

The Oscars have been a joke for a while now, but some of these nominations feel like it's The People's Choice Awards. Bridesmaids for writing? Jesus.

Pretty awful list, honestly.

Glad Tree of Life wasn't completely forgotten. Shame got snubbed hard. Fassbender not being nominated should be a crime. Same with McQueen for direction. Drive deserved a nom for cinematography as well. Nothing at all for Martha Marcy May Marlene is also sad.

like gaf does to speed racer

If you want to argue about Speed Racer, make an argument. Nobody's impressed by you reducing people's appreciation of Speed Racer to some ludicrous theory about them just liking to hold up "mediocre films."

I'd like to say I was surprised by Tintin not making any list and the saccharine suffocation of War Horse making the best picture list, but I'm not. What did surprise me is Reznor and Ross not getting a nomination for Dragon Tattoo. That score was on par with - if not better than - The Social Network's, and that won the bloody award. But since when was there consistency in the Oscars?

Given all the support that the other animated films have, including Sr. Trueba's veiled experiment passing for one, I wanted something better for Wrinkles (Arrugas). I haven't seen it yet (in Spanish cinemas on Friday, 27), but if it really is the magnificent translation from the illustrated novel by Paco Roca that some people since the 59th Donostia - San Sebastián International Film Festival (59 edizioa Donostiako Nazioarteko Zinemaldia) make it to be, then I assume it as worthy of the nomination.

At least I hope it gains some more recognition after this. By the way, be sure to check out the work of this amazing illustrator (I posted a little about him on this cool thread here http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=27196209&postcount=183 and http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=31751000&postcount=202).

Not to mention that he even played the ridiculous GAF hivemind card.

I'd argue Shame wasn't that good though outside the performances which should have definitely gotten nominated.

Out of all the films nominated in any category this year, I only saw one of them.

I'm willing to accept responsibility for that, but this really seemed like a shitty year.

Oh, and this was not a bad year for movies by any means. Seek out more movies if you're having trouble finding ones you enjoy. I actually liked more movies this year than I did last year.

The Tintin score was nothing too special, felt like Catch Me if You Can redux to be honest. Really disappointed with the Reznor snub

haven't seen War Horse yet so I can't comment on that ost

Wow, what a lol-worthy set of nominations.

Nothing for Take Shelter? Nothing for Melancholia? No Fassbender? Nothing for Weekend? No Skin I Live In?

I will only be hopin for Scorsese to clean up now. Even though it won't happen. Hugo or Tree of life winning best picture would feel satisfactory.

Scorsese gave an awesome talk last week here, hoping that he and Hugo pick up a lot of awards!

Yea, I'd be okay with this too, even if I was more hot on Hugo than ToL. Stil lgotta see The Artist and Midnight in Paris to be sure. The rest of the nominees....eh....

Actor in a Leading Role

Demián Bichir in A Better Life - haven't seen
George Clooney in The Descendants - good but I thought he was better in Up in the Air
Jean Dujardin in The Artist - yeah he was really good in this, fair play. The dog was better though LOL
Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - fantastic, should win hands down
Brad Pitt in Moneyball - meh, he was much better in Tree of Life.

Gosling should have been nominated for something, but split his vote in all likelihood.

Actor in a Supporting Role

Kenneth Branagh in My Week with Marilyn - I've always liked Branagh, thought he was pretty good in this
Jonah Hill in Moneyball - he was okay. I can only think he got in because he's a comedic actor that was better than expected in a dramatic role.
Nick Nolte in Warrior - excellent. I wasn't a huge fan of the film but the acting was great.
Christopher Plummer in Beginners - Plummer's always been a favourite of mine, was fantastic in Beginners.
Max von Sydow in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - von Sydow was good in a terribly written part.

Brooks should have been in instead of Hill, and probably Hardy or Strong from Tinker Tailor instead of Branagh.

Actress in a Leading Role

Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs - good, but showy Oscar bait.
Viola Davis in The Help - good, but showy Oscar bait.
Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - she was very good but Rapace was better so I'd be pissed if I was her.
Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady - FUCK MERYL STREEP SHE HAS ALL THE SUBTLETY AND EMOTIONAL CONNECTION TO AN AUDIENCE OF A UNSUBTLE AND EMOTIONLESS SACK OF TURD
Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn - brilliant, probably my choice but perhaps a bit of a caricature.

Actress in a Supporting Role

Bérénice Bejo in The Artist - fantastic, probably my choice. Also hot.
Jessica Chastain in The Help - better in Tree of Life, but pretty good in this. Also hot.
Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids - she was good but getting more praise than Wiig (who deserves it more) purely because she's fat, ergo funny. Also hot?
Janet McTeer in Albert Nobbs - better than Close.
Octavia Spencer in The Help - Emma Stone will be pissed, was the best in the cast.

Directing

Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist - workmanlike direction, great that he wrote it but nothing special about the direction.
Alexander Payne for The Descendants - same here; I think he's being rewarded for the film as opposed to the actual direction (I know this kind of means the same thing, but the script and acting are better than the sum of its parts)
Martin Scorsese for Hugo - yeah Scorsese directed the shit out of this movie, my choice.
Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris - his best film in years.
Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life - again, fantastic direction.

Tomas Alfredson should be there instead of Payne for Tinker Tailor.

Best Picture

The Artist - very good film, solidly entertaining but so much like Singin' In The Rain it's unreal. Will win - 3.5/4
The Descendants - good film but like I say, there's a great script and great acting but the film's a little empty - 2.5/4
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - just the most vacuous and morally bankrupt movie, Oscar bait so obvious it's ridiculous - 0.5/4
The Help - well made but so on the nose and predictably Oscar - 2/4
Hugo - fantastic film, Scorsese's best since No Direction home and possibly Goodfellas - 4/4
Midnight in Paris - Woody's best film in ages but a bit slight to be a contender - 3/4
Moneyball - pretty average film, maybe I have to be American to love it - 2/4
The Tree of Life - loved it when I saw it but I have no desire to see it again - 3/4
War Horse - rubbish, the play's much better. Only Hiddlestone and Cumberbatch leave with any credit - 1.5/4

One fucking space left and out of spite they can't find any room for Tinker Tailor, Drive or Fast Five. Suck my gooch Academy.

Hope The Artist takes home plenty of hardware. Loved that film.

Is sort of a boring year overall. No Fassbender makes me sad.

What's good about his work/the movie?

I like your taste. Agreed on almost all points (of the movies I've seen).

Tinker Tailor, Drive, and Dragon Tattoo were my favorite movies of the year... and none were nominated for best picture. Oh well.

But for the record, I think Rooney Mara was a better Salander than Rapace.

I liked a lot of these movies, but they don't make me very excited. There's nothing I think I'm gonna be putting on my "Best of the Decade" list years from now, ya know? Some of these noms are good, some are great, but overall? Nothing too terribly ecstatic about.

Oh, and this was not a bad year for movies by any means. Seek out more movies if you're having trouble finding ones you enjoy. I actually liked more movies this year than I did last year.

I always find it weird that people criticize the Oscars as not being a barometer of all the good movies that came out in a given year...and then complain about how shitty of a year for movies it was based on the Oscars.

WTF at no Tintin. Crazy snub.

What a bad year, I've only seen 2 of the 10 films nominated for best picture and I didn't even really like them. Have no interest in seeing any of the others.

The BAFTA nominees are so much better..

All I can do is laugh now that Reznor and Ross didn't even get a nomination. Their score has been in my rotation of music since the day it was released.

Is anything like a shoe in for Best Picture? I saw Hugo and Midnight in Paris and both were awful. The Help was great. Moneyball was good.

Is it worth Redboxing Tree of Life?

I'm surprised by how extraordinarily irrelevant the nominations are this year.
