I like RPGs, it's just that I didn't get a PS2 until 2006, had an N64 instead of a PSX, and a Genesis instead of a SNES. Basically, I've had the RPG-starved system every gen.

I hope to make up for that this gen!
... Actually, I'm going Wii60 and PS3 is probably going to be RPG King again.

I'm currently going through Tales of Legendia, have Skies of Arcadia bought but unplayed (will do so sometime soon), and will be pre-ordering Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon as soon as they're in EB Canada's system =/

How do you people remember off the top of your head all of these games that you're listing? Do you keep a list in notepad that you can copy and paste from just in case a thread like this comes along? If so why? Maybe its just an e-penis thing like others said earlier.

What. I must repeat what SailorDaravon said. A LIST THREAD? :\ SERIOUSLY now.

I'll base my rpgs from SYSTEM instead. Alphabetical order blows hard. And seriously, you're not even trying if you have to go to f*cking GameFAQs for help on listing yours. :\ Games you beaten and CANNOT remember shouldn't even count. :\

Iffy on Zelda titles. Dunno why zelda feels like an rpg to me, I guess its the sense of adventure you can get from it. o_O

And yeah... I definitely need to get off my ass and finish up a lot of next-gen rpgs already.

Not all that many, really... there are definitely more I started but didn't finish than ones I actually finished. Anyway, erm... yeah, Zelda and Castlevania aren't RPGs. If you really want to use one of the most general definition of "RPG" imaginable, maybe they could count, but so would tactics games ('SRPGs'), which aren't in this list... really though, none of those are RPGs. Castlevania is an action/platformer, Zelda is action-adventure, etc...

Of course, there is some room for debate -- if Zelda isn't an RPG, how is Final Fantasy Adventure (and the rest of the Mana series), which were inspired by Zelda above all at least at first, RPGs? But they are... eh, whatever.

... wait a minuite. Castlevania games which emulated Metroid ('Metroidvania'/'Castleroid' games count, but not the Metroid games they are based off of? Huh? That makes no sense... *lists Metroid games* (yes, I know, really none of these action-platformers belong on this list, but if you want them listed, then list them I will... I will draw a line somewhere, though. Advance Wars is NOT an RPG by any possible reasonable definition of the genre.)

Traditional or mostly traditional Western or Japanese RPGs or Action-RPGs
1. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
2. Planescape: Torment
3. Diablo II (action-RPG)
4. Diablo II Expansion Set: Lord of Destruction (action-RPG)
5. Quest for Glory I: So You Want To Be A Hero (VGA) (adventure-RPG)
6. Quest for Glory III: Wages of War (adventure-RPG)
7. Castle of the Winds (Parts I & II)
8. Final Fantasy Adventure (action-RPG)
9. Tales of Symphonia
10. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (GC) (action-RPG)
11. Golden Sun
12. Illusion of Gaia (action-RPG)
13. Paper Mario
14. Lunar Legend
15. Skies of Arcadia Legends
16. Riviera: The Promised Land
17. CaveQuest (kind of beat it...)
18. Guild Wars (beat all missions with three characters)
19. Guild Wars - Factions (beat final mission with one character)

Zelda games (action/adventure/RPG/whatever, not called 'RPGs')
20. The Legend of Zelda - Link's Awakening
21. The Legend of Zelda - Oracle of Ages
22. The Legend of Zelda - Oracle of Seasons
23. The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time
24. The Legend of Zelda - The Wind Waker

action/platform - Metroidvania,etc (these really aren't RPGs)
25. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
26. Threads of Fate (if Castlevania counts these action-platformers would too...)
27. Metroid Fusion
28. Metroid Zero Mission

Tactics 'SRPG' (I've played a lot of strategy games, but not nearly as many ones in the tactics subgenre... for sake of avoiding argument, I'll leave out heavily RPG-influenced PC strategy games like Disciples, Warcraft III, and Heroes of Might & Magic. Really though, I wouldn't consider this category RPG any more than I would the Metroid and Castlevania one. Whatever, it makes the list look longer... :))
29. Fire Emblem
30. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
31. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

There are a lot more I played some and didn't finish, of course, but listing those games isn't the point of this thread, as tempting as doing that is...

I didn't have to look any up, but did look at a list of games I have to see if I'd forgotten anything, which I hadn't, as far as I know.

As for order, here I chose to first have a mixed list of games I would consider RPGs, then separate groupings of games which are ... less clearly ... part of the RPG genre... can't do both that and a listing by order finished or by platform, really.

Every major PC/Console RPG from around 1987-1995, even the real stinkers like Ultima NES and Drakkhen (C-64). I was a bit obsessive.

There's a few I couldn't close the deal on, like Bard's Tale III (too hard) or Ultima IV (defective disk),

I'm actually starting to keep a list now. Started at the beginning of the year. It keeps me motivated to finish more games. Trying to average maybe 4 or 5 games a month.

I couldn't remember them off the top of my head. Instead, I used my IGN collection list and went down the list, which is why mine is alphabetical. There were a few older titles that I couldn't remember whether I finished them or not, though, so I just left those off the list.

As for "why"? Curiosity, mainly... I wasn't quite sure how I was doing backlog wise with my collection, and this was a good way to find out. No "e-penis thing" on my part, promise.

I'm really not wanting to get into a debate/argument/whathaveyou, but I'd like to chime in on this -- ya'know, at least to help explain part of it.

Final Fantasy Adventure may or may not have been "inspired" by Zelda, but that really has no bearing on it's genre. FFA is an Action/RPG because of it's content, it's base mechanics, and so on. This is an age-old argument, however, as to "whether or not that matters," but I'm just trying to explain my stance on it.

As for the Metroidvanias, only the environmental layout was gimped from Metroid, not really the gameplay mechanics. Most of the mechanics were already present in previous Castlevanias, and the continuous castle layout from Metroid isn't the "RPG" side that people consider -- it's, once again, the leveling up, the stat-based combat algorithms, the dice rolls, the... Metroid has none of this, RPGs do. It's not debatable whether or not Castlevania has RPG elements, to note, but it is debatable as to whether or not they're strong enough to be placed within the genre itself. Personally, I think so, but that's mostly due to how I play... Others can feel free to disagree, scoff, and place it firmly in the "Action/Platformer" realm. That's fine. But honestly, there's no reason to create an argument over something so trivial, for the fifty millionth time. :p

:)

Just because it's not really important doesn't mean that you can't argue about it... :) (and, arguably, over-think the issue)

The more important the issue of argument the more people care about them being right, generally, so with smaller issues it's maybe more likely that the debate will actually progress... maybe not, but it is probably more likely.

As for FFA and Metroid, though... yes, I am aware of why Zelda is considered to not be an RPG and the Mana games are, and I'm not saying that Zelda is an RPG. It's just... well, "RPG" is an incredibly vague genre, and defining what is an RPG and what isn't is very difficult. Often, it seems, it's just commonly held conventions that define what is and what isn't, not any clearly defined rules that determine what genre a game is in. Zelda called itself an "Adventure game", so "Adventure" it is... I would not call it that because to me the 'Adventure' genre already existed before Zelda, in the form of text and graphical adventure games mostly on the PC, and Zelda is clearly not in that same genre. So... it becomes an "Action-Adventure". But it clearly has strong RPG themes, like a health bar that expands as you progress (heart containers you get from beating bosses), and "action-adventure" is a pretty broad category too, so is it an "action-adventure-rpg" or something? Action-Adventure probably does fit best, but it isn't completely clear, thanks to Nintendo unhelpfully including aspects from too many genres into the game... :D

Anyway, I can see how saying "Zelda only gives you healthups when you beat bosses and has action game like health-expanding powerups you can find, etc", could describe how Zelda isn't an RPG. And when compared to most of the Mana games, I can see the point -- from Secret of Mana on, the Mana series went much harder into being more traditional RPGs with action-style combat. Really, I am only talking about FFA, the first game in the series, because it plays far, far more like a Zelda game than any of its sequels or spinoffs does.

I don't really understand the (Metroidvania) Castlevania part, though. Yes, you have experience, equipment, items, health and mana bars that expand as you kill enemies and level up... but... the gameplay itself is pure side-scrolling action with bits of platform jumping. Having some RPG elements does not necessarily make a game an RPG... otherwise, as I said later, every strategy game with any RPG element would have to be called an RPG, which is definitely not the way things are. You have to look at what the game's core genre is, I think, and I just don't see Metroidvania being an RPG.

It is tricky, though, I agree... for instance, Gauntlet. More specifically, Gauntlet games that you can finish with character saving -- Gauntlet IV (Gen), Gauntlet Legends, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, and, I guess, Seven Sorrows (any others?). Are those RPGs, or action games? You have stats, and level ups, etc, but also levels, and very action-styled combat... I've never been quite sure whether these games are RPGs or action games, really... Either way, I like them a lot. Well, probably not Seven Sorrows, but the older ones.

There's gotta be more than that.. My most awaited RPGs are Mass Effect and FF13. Leaning towards Mass Effect since it's closer to release and what we know looks more appealing.

Quick question, and I don't mean to derail the thread, but is the TGS footage for FF13 real-time?

I really need to play my games, more. I mean, that's not even half of my RPG collection... :(

My hat goes off to you sir. That's a damn good list. I have so many RPGs to finish in the next 50 years :(

How do you people remember off the top of your head all of these games that you're listing? Do you keep a list in notepad that you can copy and paste from just in case a thread like this comes along? If so why? Maybe its just an e-penis thing like others said earlier.

Yup, in my case it's a doc file updated with every RPG I beat. And no it wasn't in case a thread like this comes up... more like in case I forger which DQ/ FF game I've already beaten and not start it again, seriously.

I have to say that I cheated on some of them (most notably the first SSI gold box games I played, edited the save file to have 18 on every characteristics, cheated a little bit also on eye of the beholder 1)

Wow, a fellow PC RPG gamer :) You must be the second person I've met that played and finished games like Anvil of Dawn, Menzoberranzan or Stone Prophet (amazing egyptian music in it). Awesome, I'm not alone!

Not very many:

- Chrono Trigger
- Chrono Cross
- Final Fantasy X
- Dragon Quest VIII

I've started and restarted Final Fantasy VI way too many times, but I swear i'll beat it someday! I gave up on Final Fantasy VII a few weeks ago, it hasn't aged well at all. Looking forward to Persona 3!

Too bad Red Scarlett didn't post here yet. She would probably list like 200 jRPGs :(

And yes I know what the "G" in RPG means. Don't you have bigger problems people?

Oh, I can also list RPG games (har, har) that I am currently in the process of beating:

Darkstone - (finishing it up)
Final Fantasy X - (90+ hours clocked, Sea of Sorrows beating Seymour for the nth time. Don't want to finish it untill I clear the Arena, win all Blitzball games and clear Omega Ruins)
Return to Krondor - I got out of the sewers. Chapter 3 or 4? I don't remember exactly.
Baten Kaitos: Origins - I made it to Disc 2 just last week, yay! Killed that ****ing Holoholo ****.
Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant - man, I must have sunk 40 hours in that game already. I sailed to some island with a ****ing Tyrannosaurus Rex on it. Bean to the Umpani city already. LOST MY SAVES :( back in 1998.

It's kind of embarrasing that I didn't beat a single SSI goldbox RPG game or any Wizardry title :/

Actually, Red only really plays DQ and FF games as I recall. She's played others but not nearly as extensively DQ or FF I believe.

The shortest game from my list must be Ancient Land of Ys. It took me what, 16 hours to beat it? In one sitting :) that's my personal record.

FF8... I had a 120 hours save at the end :/

Ok, here's my list cause I'm bored.

The list includes ARPGs like Secret of Mana but not SRPGs like Tactics Ogre. I'm still missing a bunch I think not including the ones I purposefully excluded. It also doesn't include ports. If I did include a SRPG on there, let me know. :lol

Never finished any of TES games. Arena - got out of the jail. Daggerfall - got out of the first dungeon to the snowy areas. The game runs @ 4 fps on my PC.

:lol Yeah, I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see almost everyone in this thread not list the TES games as they're pretty unfocused and long (+1 Speevy and Shouta for Morrowind.) Sure, I glossed over the Fallout and FF spin-offs; but at least their spin-offs of actual damn RPGs.:p

Edit: Whoops. Not familiar with Fallout Tactics at all I guess.

Hmm, I bet it's not too many:

1) Lunar: SSSC
2) Final Fantasy VII
3) Final Fantasy VIII
4) Final Fantasy X
5) Chrono Cross
6) Xenogears
7) Dragon Quest VIII

If those are all of them, then wow. Seeing as I would consider myself an RPG fan, I guess that's not too many. There are soooo many RPGs that I've left after getting relatively far into them (SoA, Pokemons, Lunar 2, Morrowind, Xenosaga, Paper Mario: TTYD, etc.) Out of these, there's a very good chance I'll finish Chrono Trigger, which I left it at the last boss way back when it was my first RPG and never really got to that point on other playthroughs, and maybe finish FFXII. I'd like to play through all of FFVI some day too (I can't seem to play it on Gameboy, and haven't advanced since losing at that river escape part on both "playthroughs".) Still, I was planning on buying Super Paper Mario, Oblivion on PC, and Pokemon Diamond all this month. We'll see how those go. . .

The biggest problem with completing RPG games is that they take too damn long to finish especially jRPGs. I've finished Metroid Prime in 11 hours, God of War in 9 FFS and your average Final Fantasy/ Dragon Warrior game takes 60 hours to complete.

Well, in my case it was a lack of interest I had reached the last disc but quit after dealing with that torrid Chocobo Rasing side-quest.
