LLTP: Mega Man Zero -- more frustration than it's worth?

The first Zero was very much an experimental title.

You could do without playing the first, but then you'll be missing out on some fairly important story in the series (if you care for that thing).

The game is really not that hard, its got a steep learning curve. Just use some cyber elves, memorize levels, and start owning. Out of all the zero and zx games, this one has the worst incentive to difficulty ratio for actually S ranking everything (imo). Just don't worry about the ranks and have fun.

Zero 1 is, I think, the only one of the series that's unfairly hard.

2 is a sweet spot. Extremely difficult, but far fewer (or basically eliminated) "cheap deaths".

3 gets easier, 4 has an easy move where a Cyber-elf facilitates you.

I never thought it was too hard on normal difficulty. Sure, I died a few times, but never felt like I was up against something unreasonable. Now, Hard Mode with the restriction of obtaining all elves but not using any was hard as balls(it was a requirement for unlocking Super Easy mode IIRC. .

I guess when I'm playing one of the best games around, I don't mind if it's difficult, I just want to keep playing.

MMZ 1 kicked my ass, but that's what i liked about it. took me few deaths but i've finished it.

MMZ 2 ok, but too easy.

MMZ 3 ok, but even easier. and that's why i've lost interest......

MMZ 4 delayed.

I like linking this video when I can. It's a collection of skill play sections edited together from the MMZ series. Basically stuff you'd never think of doing if you played it as a straight Mega Man game.

Skip to about 50 seconds to bypass the intro.

Thanks, this is exactly why the Zero series is so good. They can be so dauntingly difficult, but then you get the hang of it and you're flying around levels while robots blow up behind you.

It's a tie between Zero 2 and Zero 3 for being my absolute faves in the series.

2 had that Chain Rod that I loved a lot, as well as the "Forms" which I thought were a nice addition, and wished that they could have stayed in the whole series.

But then again, 3 had those Recoil Rods... :D

Whatever Inti is working on now, after MM9? I hope that it does a lot to restore the quality the Zero games had. Because ZXA definitely wasn't hitting it right...

MMZ was quite fun, even if it was quite tough. I can't imagine going for S ranks w/o using any of the cyber elves though. That's downright masochistic.

ZX Advent was actually my favorite MM game since the early X series. I thought it was brilliant letting you transform into the various boss characters in addition to picking up the other Mega Man powers. The map layout was a vast improvement from ZX as well.

Why the hate?

Advent gets a lot of unnecessary hate. I thought it improved on the original ZX in many ways, though I guess there's a lack of originality in the overall concept?

I mean, the level design was fine, though there weren't any awesome homages to previous games like there were in ZX (i.e. the highway).

The reason I don't like the ZX games more than the Zero games, mostly, is because I feel that the overworld design is completely unnecessary. It's too vast for its own good. Just keep things linear. This is why Mega Man Zero 2 is typically hailed as the best of all these handheld games. It just hit the sweet spot in terms of difficulty, linearity, and optional upgrades.

MMZ is that hard, especially if you can't force yourself to kill all those cyber elfs.

Even doing that the bosses are still harder than anything in the X or original series. Multiple life bars, near screen filling attacks, annoying patterns.

Each progressive Z game lightens up on the difficulty a bit, but I'd still say that they are the four hardest MM games.

Well, there was the awesome 8-bit unlockable game. I'm in the minority of gaf for liking ZX pretty well and not enjoying advent. Having to use giant slow boss forms, constantly switching, and how some forms were completely useless in certain situations (like not being able to move or shoot useless) outdid the irritating map of ZX for me. I thought the axel-ish model was a really cool idea though, I hope they retain it in a ZX 3 but don't require you to switch to forms that kill your mobility all the time. That just totally destroys what I like about the Zero/ZX series.

Playing Z1 one the original GBA was hardcore.

I couldn't beat the bomb defusing mission until I got the GBA SP :p

I nutted up -- I can't let this game beat me. Those of you who said use the Z-saber, shit, you were sooooo right. It's like a completely different game now.

Yep, it goes from Mega Man "Why won't anything die" to Mega Man "Ninja flip out edition" and it gets better when you learn how to use both at the same time.

Ehn, I don't know if I agree with that. If you don't pop the elves, they are definitely among the hardest, but if you munch every elf you find, I think they might be the four easiest Mega Man games.

I bought the japanese version of Zero I for GBA and finished it without using any cyberelves because I didn't understand any of the instructions. Shit was really hard.

Alright. I finished the game. I was able to do the whole thing without cyber elves until the final boss. Then I powered up because I couldn't stand to watch those freaking cinemas again. With a decent continue system I could have done it without, but oh well. How people stand to play through for high rankings I'll never understand, but I'm glad I finished it.

Glad you got me to push through GAF. I'll be starting MMZ2 tomorrow.
