LOST 06.05: "Lighthouse" (Ben has been Claire'd for this week)

He guesses that the flashbacks we've seen throughout the series have actually been Jacob watching in the mirror, similar to how Smokey seems to scan and "download" information from people he comes across. He also points out that Claire appears to be able to differentiate between Christian and Smokey, and that Christian's body is still missing. So who's Christian? [Televisionary]

I like this idea, that Jacob was watching all the flashbacks.

Its a retcon similar to the one in the Matrix Reloaded, where all of the Architects TV screens were the same as the monitors seen when Neo was being interrogated in the first movie, hinting that the Architect was watching him all along.

If he's able to watch at particular times like DVR, it would explain how he would know when to intervene. In fact, I assumed this was the reason the lighthouse was being used.

I'm thinking the writers knew there would be a way for Jacob to see the Lostiers, but I think the invented the Lighthouse idea for this season. Like I said previously, I didn't care for the way it was introduced.

EDIT - I wondered if he knew that Smokie would set him up considering how integral time travel was in setting up Locke as fake leader. It would seem that Smokey knew the events too considering it was necessary to convince Richard that locke was the chosen one.
 
Skipped the last page or so, so sorry if it came up: anybody subscribe to the constructed reality theory? I've seen a theory out there that the entire X timeline is Jacob creating a reality with the Others help to demonstrate something to our losties.
 
If the theme and pacing wasn't enough like BSG's final season, now they're pulling a 'guess the last of the final 5' bullshit with someone coming to the island. I just hope it's handled better. I hate thinking of BSG's final season. Especially with the whole mystical/religious note it decided to end on.

I'd like to think Lost won't end on that same mystical theme because for one, BSG is still fresh in my mind, and two, I've always admired the science fiction feel of the show. But it's stupid to think that any answers will be scientific at this point. It's impossible for all of this to be some big experiment other than two gods playing around.

It would reveal that Kate isn't a candidate because she doesn't do "taco night". And that Jacob loves tacos.

That and it's just a brilliant concept and really gives more meaning to the flashbacks. The flashbacks were usually good IMO but I didn't really take them for much more than a way to develop the characters. I mean, I always figured there would be a reason why we get the numerous amounts of flashbacks, but if this is the case it really puts them into a larger perspective.

i don't get that BSG feel myself. Mainly because Ron Moore was a Mormon who openly admitted making shit up on the fly - a disappointing, religious ending seemed pretty inevitable in retrospect. I get none of that vibe from the people making this show.

If I had to guess with the information we have now, big questions will definitely be answered, anything else will be up in the air/irrelevant/explainable by other means, and the character fates will be mostly ambiguous with enough information to lead us to closure we'd enjoy.
 
I do think the finale will involve either the Island exploding (perhaps by Volcano) or the whole world exploding.

Because after you go for a nuke, what is left to blow up?

Every season ends with the season's main objective being blown up, so maybe John Locke blowing up Smokey from within counts.

You guys know this isn't really going to happen right? I've seen you all joke about it so much I'm scared you guys are starting to believe it :p.

And I want Locke back as well.. :p.

LOST would be a typical sci-fi show without the flashbacks. There was not enough time on the island to explain the actions of the characters without the flashbacks, plus the mystery elements would suffer too.

The primary reason for the flashbacks are for the drama. JJ wanted a crossover hit that would appeal to the Star Trek crowd as well as their spouses. I guarentee that some of the best parts of any LOST episode for many were the flashbacks and not the mysteries. In fact, the ratings started going down when it appeared the mysteries were overshadowing the drama with no answers in sight.

It's a little different now because the writer's plan worked and it is a crossover hit, but still requires patience. Many are still going to want to see a resolution for Kate & Jack & Sawyer or see if Sayid can be redeemed. The flashes fill in the gaps for those that are curious.

It's going to be the same way with the sideway flashes as well. It seems to me that many of the flashes are indicitive of how they wound up on the island emotionally. With that said, I think it would be awesome to link all of the flashes to one big Jacob initiative.

I'm not imagining some scenario where flocke grabs his head and strats screaming GRAAAAARGGGH!! as he loses his balances and bends back and forth, reeling all around, and then explodes and when the dust settles, all that is left is the real John Locke.

nope, not hoping for that at all.

That's a clever idea. I would be happy if we found out that Jacob was checking out the past for the first three season, looking for the right opportunity's to affect the Losties lives. Then he checked the future (for the flashfowards) to see did everything work out.

Then the flash-sideways would be us finding how what could have happened the Losties if Jacob never influenced them at all.

The important thing is that Wallace was crossed out. Once we know really what it takes to be crossed out, then we can narrow down our list of choices.

Where they're coming from or what they're coming in would be a help as well.

wallace is going to be important, since he is the 108, a cimbination of all the numbers.


and a different topic:

why is jacob talking about evil people coming to the island and that its to late to stop them. in the scene with him and mib at the beach, he made the impression, that he would not care if people came to the island. and mib even alludes, that jacob helped them come.
maybe thats the reason, why he insists, that hurley does not warn the temple folks,

Noone evil is coming to the Island. He's talking about MIB when he's talking to Hurley at the lighthouse saying that it's too late.

Hmmm - what if it's the opposite? What if the X-timeline is the *result* of Jacob's involvement? This is just a wild, half-baked theory, but the reason I think it might hold water is because one of the posters above reminded me that Kate is *innocent* in Timeline X. Could this be a direct result of Jacob going back and setting the Losties on a better path? To what end, I'm not sure...perhaps he does this after the "game" ends? Is there anyone Jacob *didn't* visit?

's makeshift camp
 
So, I know this hasn't been shown...and the only Jacob interaction with Hurley so far has been the cab scene.

But perhaps Jacob recorded the numbers being read over the radio, knowing that it would lead down a series of events that ended up with Hurley?

Since Jacob has been influencing these people, it makes sense.

For all we know, Jacob is simply a candidate too that wanted to come to the island. Maybe they had to be in agreement in order to change things unless one of them died.

What's weird is the particular people they choose are the opposite of what their goal seems to be.

Jacob---> on the island = Jack ---> off the island. He only came back because, as the episode mentioned, he thought it would fix him. The whole time he has been trying to alter the events to never come to the island.

MIB---> off the island = Locke--->on the island. He only left because he was told he had to to save it. The whole time he was alive involved efforts to stay and keep others on the island.

I'm still thinking the name is a red herring. I think the 108 degrees refers to the bearing that the lighthouse mirrors needed to point to rather than corresponding to Wallace in any way.
