LTTP : FF X-2 - WTF is this!?

I liked it quite a bit.

It's not my favorite FF or anything and i wish it had a hard mode but i thought it was goofy fun.

Not all jokes hit, but enough of them to make traveling through a rejuvenated Spira enjoyable, It was also great to see so many returning charaters realize what a gigantic party pooper Sin (and the religious nonesense his exitense enabled) was.

You know, for as much crap as the game gets (yes, I do understand all the "Charlie's Angles" and jpop references/disapproval).

The underlying tone and feeling of the story was great and I loved everything about Yuna trying to
find her lost lover. She never gave up and keep at it.
It's almost a coming of age story at the same time... The feeling of hope was drawn out throughout the entire game, even at parts like:

that look innocent on the outside, but really showed great character development and helped carry the narrative. They balanced the more light hearted scenes with some really deep story elements that were brought out brilliantly with good CG moments:

And many other that I can't post because of obvious spoilers, but there are some really heartfelt moments throughout, and that ending was really something. I mean, REALLY something.

And hell, it gave us this track, which is one of the best in all of the Final Fantasy's:

So yeah, I get the "j-poppy" complaints, but I feel it was very well executed for what it set out to do story wise, even with it's "girls just wanna have fun" exterior. It's a pretty emotional story with such a unique and delicate undertone throughout the whole story, which that above song really brings out...

When they first stared singing on the floating platforms... I promptly took out the disc and returned it to gamestop.

This was the ps2 version, it wasn't until the gaf thread praising the battle system where I even had the inkling to play through the remaster.

Like this is the shit I'm talking about

Really dude?

Seriously, not trolling I did that. I just finished FFX and was pretty hyped. The next day I put in X-2 and stopped playing immediately. It was too jarring to play them back to back like that.

Mind you I didn't know anything about X-2 except that Rikku was on the cover. I've bought the remasters for both PS3 and PS4 and vow to get to FFX-2 after Final Fantasy 15 comes out.

I enjoyed 10 and X-2 wasn't bad but I could sense the downhill spiral, in my opinion, that continued into XII. I just couldn't finish XII and have not touched another since.

Huge FIinal Fantasy fan and was there since the start with the US release of the original but as I grew older, time for games became less and the changes made int he series I just lost my love and desire for Final Fantasy.

Nothing wrong with that. X-2 is so over the top a lot of people will be turned off completely by the opening scene alone.

Yes, so turned off by...a girl singing a song and dancing on stage?

Really? REALLY!?

God you are all goddamn children apparently who cannot handle anything even slightly outside your comfort zone.

Do you understand what this sounds like? That you get so freaked out by a girl singing a song that you immediately run back to gamestop and return the game because you feel uncomfortable about it?!

What the fuck is wrong with you?

And other people are being childish here?

Listen dude, you need to get over people not wanting to play things that don't fit the tone of what they like. I liked FFX because it attempted to take itself seriously. I genuinely liked that more than most things in that game. FFX-2 was a completely departure, which is most succinctly captured by its flirtation with the "idol" aesthetic. It's a huge turn off to many people, myself included.

Try not to curse anyone else out because their preferences differ from yours.

FFX-2 is a great game. It would've been even better if best girl Rikku was front and center. Also wow at all this garbage in the comments. Seems like most of you don't even know what the game is about and judged it solely on the first 10 seconds of the game. Missing out.

Still waiting for a Rikku-centric game, please.

The battle system is freakin sweet, the graphics are solid for it's time and the soundtrack isn't bad but holy crap the story blows

X-2 is the moment Motomu Toriyama gained a stranglehold on the series and lead it in to the gutter.

The game is non-cannon in my eyes.

-_-

Here's a perfect example of the pot calling the kettle black. You're so mad about people choosing not to play a game that has scenes and culture in it they don't care for that you've taken to cursing them out and calling them children. Well done, your debate skills and respect for other people's opinions are legendary.

This is also a good example of a post that would typically be ban worthy but since it aligns with the views of the mods nothing will come of it :/. Remember folks, directly insulting other members of the community is unacceptable, unless of course you're insulting someone who holds a minority opinion from the community; if such is the case then please feel free to fling shit at each other and call each other names to your heart's content or at least until the minority opinion holder gets his ban.

This thread didn't have to turn out like this over a disagreement about a video game, and they never do. Civility is so rare on this site these days :/.

He's right though. If someone watched the opening cutscene and immediately turned it off and returned the game, that person is trash and probably a Trump supporter.

Don't ignore everything else now. I heard great things about the ATB system right here on gaf, multiple threads of the defense of the game, Because of that I bought the remasters for both PS3 and PS4. Going from the awesome Sin battles and cut scenes to next the next day to seeing

was too much.

I gave it a chance back then and couldn't for the life of me finish it. I think I played for like 7 hrs I think. While the combat was fun, I just couldn't get past how bad the story was. That and how it pretty much shits on the X original ending.

The worst part of the game was the dumb percentage system that you could not figure out completely 100% unless you used a FAQ. Otherwise I really liked it. But then again my gay ass isn't offended at the sight of a few girls acting campy and singing on a stage.

I know a Gaffer made this one, it had to have been...

I'm with you OP, I didn't get or like X-2 at all. Played it first on PS4 after really liking X's Remaster on it, but by the end of X-2 I was playing Megadeth on Spotify and grinding so that the final boss would be easy since I liked the combat but not the other nonsense. Right from "It's showtime girls" I cringed.

Damn shame I missed all the cues to get the perfect ending, but I wouldn't have done that much extra in the game regardless. The secret ending is great, I'll give it that.

So I beat the game, "giving it a chance", but it was still bad after the fantastic X.

Fun game that basically took a huge dump on FFX and everything it did. Completely destroyed Spira and its lore as far as I'm concerned.

This is a common complaint, but for some reason most people miss that this is intentional. It's supposed to make you feel that way. Please read this post.

Fencedude does have a point, while that might not exactly be the intent behind the posts here it was/is a major complaint with some players.
To complaints about Yuna's outfit calling it "slutty" and or embarrassed to play it cause of certain things really shows an underlying problem.

But people can have their issues with the game without it being layered in "why am I playing this girl adventure?" Some of the complaints are valid.

But if you've only played it for 40 minutes you can't really form a valid complaint.

I find it to be a pretty good game. Probably among my three favourite FF, and markedly better than the first game. The large amount of meaningful side-content, secrets and attention to detail is awesome, and the overall gameplay (particularly the battle and job system) was a huge improvement over its predecessor.

Now, I agree that the game is filled with Toriyama's cringeworthy trademark writing and a nonsensical story.
Shuyin
's plotline in particular just comes off as really bad fanfiction, but I usually just roll with it and tend to not think too much of it and enjoy the actual fun gameplay.

Right. Like, if you don't like the gameplay? Fair enough. Think the story is dumb? Well, I disagree, but perfectly valid complaint.

But if you say you turned it off and returned it to the store because of the opening cutscene then you goddamn deserve to be mocked.

Same thing for the incredibly over the top accusations of sluttiness and general complaints about the costumes, which often end up sounding way more sexist than the actual costumes themselves could ever dream of being.

Like, if you make a judgement on Rikku or Yuna or Paine based on their outfits, then thats the very definition of being sexist. We can have a discussion about the appropriateness of female attire in most games, but to claim that it makes this game, THIS game outrageously sexist is mind boggling.

FFX-2, while being very far from perfect, is one of the very, very few uncompromisingly female-led and focused games, period. not just RPGs, but games in general. And you want to quibble about outfits? Please.

Yes, but percentage carried over into New Game Plus, and it was also possible to get more than 100% by choosing different things in your second playthrough. It wasn't as bad as you make it sound.

This stuff actually sounds interesting... is the rogue-lite just search randomly generated dungeons with the games combat system? Though I didn't bother to 100% the game or even get close to that probably(In part because I actively didn't want the secret ending) that sounds like it could be fun for a while.
Nah, it's a completely different game. Randomly-generated dungeons, but everything's on a grid and it's top-down. Cut to the 11 minute mark or so of this to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFUyXEi2VVo

Alright, fine. How long does a person need to play a game to have a strong, proper view of what the game is *actually* like and determine it's not good (or at least not for them)?

Two hours? Three?

To all the defenders attackng my opinions because I've only experienced the first forty minutes - I accept your challenge.

I will play the game for another Two Hours and Twenty Minutes. I will remain open-minded and I will approach it as if I had not witnessed the first 40 minutes of the game.

That's as fair as I can be, and I think that's plenty enough time to devote to something you aren't enjoying in the hopes that you do end up liking it.

You keep making this strawman arguement. It's not the fact that he saw a girl on stage that bothered him, it's the utterly jarring shift in tone from the ending of FFX, which he had just completed.

And again, girls are cool. I like girls. I like to think of myself as a feminist. This game's portrayal of women is "Barbie-Aisle" gender conformity.

"Girls lke pop songs and playing dress-up, right?"

It's just bad. And the script and the characters are just bad.

There's nothing wrong with your opinion. If a game doesn't interest you it doesn't interest you. Gameplay is part of a game, just as how the game comes across in story, tone and theme. Either can be a deal breaker and the opening scene can be just that.

Nothing more to debate about it - I'll go against calling people children for having a different opinion.

You can have whatever opinion you want, but when you make an attention seeking thread about it, don't get mad when people start poking holes in your half-baked opinions.

An opinion is not a "get out of criticism free" card. Yes, its your opinion, but other people get to have opinions about your opinion, and when they have more experience with whatever it is, theirs will carry more weight.

The point isn't that you dislike the game, no one here really cares if you like it or not. The point is that you made a thread, solely to get attention, and then got mad when people disagreed with you.

(this would go for basically any game that you played not even a percents worth of, this one just also happens to be already controversial, which you knew, which is why you went and made this thread)

Don't act like this is at all unexpected, or that anyone here can't see exactly what is happening. We didn't just fall off the turnip truck yesterday.

I'm more offended people consider this an "idol" game than a "magical girl" game.

In all the years since the game's original release, I never once considered that, but you're right. It really is a magical girl game, straight down to Yuna's plan to
use love and hope to beat Shuyin.

Lol, i ain't mad. I'm trying to be good-natured and amiable.

You sure do project a lot.

When you end up not liking it they'll say your opinion's invalid because you had your mind made up from the outset, just wait. Don't try to appease Gaf defense forces; you'll never manage to get your opinion respected until you simply adopt their own. My wife beat the game and she despised it, but apparently she's wrong and didn't get it or something. Apparently, according to Fencedude, it must be because she was incapable of accepting a female focused and oriented game or something of that nature. Perhaps my wife is one of the sweaty teenage males he referred to earlier or perhaps she's one of the "fucking children" that he referenced so eloquently.

Or

Just maybe

Some people don't like hoaky shit, regardless of what sex or lifestyle it's geared towards.

I await my cursing out and insults for disagreeing with the defense force though....

No, no, I'm totally willing to try again. Who knows, maybe I'll like it when it turns a corner? Maybe the battle system will enrapture me.

Regardless, I already paid for it. I might as well see if I can find value in it.

Absolutely love this game. I did have some discomfort at the heavy Jpop influence when I first started on it, but man, that battle system. I can spend hundreds of hours with it.

Wasn't a fan too of the setting and all the changes but I wanted to like the game. My main problem was for some reason, I had trouble trying to keep up with the battle system. Switching jobs, watching the ATB bars and wondering if my character would initiate a command or if the enemy would attack first. I actually beat the remaster once on my vita but could never figure out the timing. It sometimes felt like the game was buffering up commands or something. Then there's some odd technical issues with the vita version where the after battle stats screen would sometimes hang for a couple of seconds, making finishing battles a chore.

it's a shame the game carries the "X-2" title because it's really more of a goof/spinoff. though i don't blame SE, as it was the first time final fantasy had a direct sequel and they weren't sure how to go about it

by itself it was a great game, specifically because of the battle system. i'd go as far as to say it's "better" than the first game by a wide margin

Its entirely possible to dislike the game and not be a jackass about it. (personally I make it a policy to not force myself to play games I don't like, this has improved my life dramatically since I imposed it) However, thats not how most of the conversation in this thread, or even about the game since its very release has been conducted.

Lots and lots of the discourse surrounding FFX-2 boils down to "lots of boys find girls icky and when confronted with undiluted femininity they freak out". That doesn't mean the game is perfect, and that doesn't mean people (male and female) can't dislike it for perfectly legitimate reasons. Sometimes you just don't like something, it happens!

The way to deal with that is not to make threads bashing it, especially when you've played as little of it as the OP has. If I found I utterly loathed a game within literal minutes of turning it on, I'd stop playing and go do something else, and I certainly would not make a thread on NeoGAF basically saying that everyone who likes it is stupid. Like, whats the point of that, what do you gain? Nothing productive has EVER come out of threads like this. EVER.

Maybe I'm just getting old and I no longer find it fun to obsess over things I hate, I have relatively limited time for my hobbies now, and I prefer to spend that time on things I enjoy, and not on things that make me mad.

So OP doesn't need to go and play more of the game, and people who dislike it don't need to feel compelled to try and like it, but if we are going to discuss it, could we discuss it without gross hyperbole as to its content? Or is that just too much to ask?

Y'all did play FFX, right?
Dream man dad whale?

Easily bottom tier Final Fantasy. At least X-2 was fun.

It's my favorite of the X duology. I mean, at least it's *deliberately* ridiculous.

And hnnng that combat

Never once did OP call anyone stupid, even when you blatantly insulted him and started in with the name calling. Also, have a look at the bolded and answer me a question: do you believe that your anger at the reception of the game justifies how you've conducted yourself in this thread? Look at the thread and you'll see that you started in with the insults because of some people having different thresholds for what was acceptable in their gaming experience than you. Now look, it's fine to disagree, but do you think that maybe you're projecting your frustration at what you perceived to be a bigoted and sexist reception of the game by some people onto OP's relatively innocent statement that just differed from your state of view and as such you're unwittingly taking out the past 15 years of frustration on OP in a rather volatile manner? I'm not saying you're doing it on purpose, but you've been extremely hostile man. Look, I actually agree that 40 minutes to an hour isn't enough time for an lttp review, but I've never gone into a complaint thread on The Witcher 3, which I believe people are hyperbolic towards in terms of the combat and it's supposed lack of serviceability or functionality, and called posters with different viewpoints to mine fucking children. Hell one of your supporters earlier said it was akin to being a supporter of a sexist, racist, moron for the presidency of the U.S...... now I know you weren't in control of that but can you see the absurdity of making such wild claims, accusations, and insults based on nothing more than differing opinions, tolerances, and media preferences?
