LTTP : FF X-2 - WTF is this!?

The first game under Enix label, IIRC.

Game was not intended to be a mainline FF. More of a spin-off, after X events.

The game's positives:

The gameplay and job system
Yuna
Some interesting new characters including the iconic Leblanc
A wonderful soundtrack. I'll never forgive the dumb fandom that talked so much shit that the composer RETIRED due to the negative reception
Seeing how Spira was different post Sin

The game's more mixed or negative aspects:

The percentage system which is incredibly unforgiving. You practically need a guide, you can miss getting 100% in the first five minutes of gameplay.
Rikku's outfit and her shift from peppy and optimistic but otherwise smart and capable to downright mentally challenged at times
Very easy game other than the bonus dungeon
Multiple endings but the perfect and I think canon ending was very divise (just like the game I guess)

Mmmm I love the smell of teen boys frantically protesting that they totally have no interest in this girly stuff.

Like dudes, come on. Some of you are apparently nursing grudges and traumas over this game from 15 years ago.

The game isn't perfect, but its a damn sight better than most people give it credit for, and most people's opinions on the game are informed by the OP's experience or even less. Boys who take themselves too seriously start it up, see girls and freak out and protest that they totally don't like this uh uh no way.

I was in my 20s when this came out and let me tell you, its a damn good game. I thought so then, and I think so now.

Maybe, just maybe, you're completely wrong on this?

One look at the pre-release information and the box cover told you this was going to be centered on girls, yet the people reacting negatively still bought it.

I don't think anybody reacted poorly on the basis of it being "centered on girls"; they reacted because it was done poorly.

I honestly preferred FFX-2 over FFX. I played it for the first time with the HD release because I've been kept away from it for years cause of "fans' opinions". Ended up being a better game than what I expected. Charming story and characters, great OST, awesome battle system, great degree of freedom compared to the original. It's really a better designed game than its predecessor.

Still better than X!

You don't play X-2 for the story. The battle system is solid and the job system was rather great.

The battle system is great.

But everything else surrounding the game. Like, fuck, it's awful. Pretty much how to describe the majority of FF sequels.

I remember saying the same Charlie's Angels line all those years ago. The game was ridiculous and I hated every second of the plot, setting, music and characters. The combat system was interesting though. I think they were dress spheres and you could swap on the fly, different jobs depending on what you were wearing.

I had so much time back then, I finished it anyway and ended up trading it for Crimson Skies.

I don't believe you.

And you don't have to convince me that it's better than the XIII spin-offs. That's like saying one person's fart smells better than another's.
You may not believe him but he is on point. It's a great game and your missing out.

I think the ffxiii spinoff have some decent things about them to.
I'd wager half the people posting in the thread either didn't like the game or admit that the non-gameplay parts never really get better.

TBH, the idea of the game starting to take itself more seriously at some point is even more off-putting.
Im not surprised by your posts like this. It just makes me smh just like the sfv thread.

Dat character design though.

latest

No wait, that part sucks too.

I'm with you OP, the game is awful in pretty much every way. I was never a huge fan of ATB. The battle system is ok, nothing special, and certainly isn't enough to save the game. Everything else in the game is just trash.

I played FFX and loved it. I loved Yuna.

I saw X-Plays review of FFX-2 and laughed and felt dead inside.

Now I wanna try it for comedy.

I'm more offended people consider this an "idol" game than a "magical girl" game.

And a really damn fine magical girl game.

Maybe it's just me but I thought X was too angsty for its own good and I thoroughly enjoyed what X-2 offered.

I started playing Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster on PS4 last night. It's my first time, despite having been a big fan of FFX back in the day. I had been replaying FFX on Vita and didn't have access to my save on PS4, so I spun this up on a whim.

Holy shit.

This is all cringe-worthy NONSENSE. Everything is so tonely off, all the characters are so annoying. Yuna's costume is entirely out of character. THAT POP SONG. THE CHARLIE'S ANGELS CUTSCENES. THOSE TEAM ROCKET VILLIANS. THAT PLOT.

Several times people explicitly say to Yuna that she has changed and she responds by saying she isn't going to be told what to do by anybody anymore.

Replaying FFX recently, it's fucking crazy how apologetic she is to everybody for everything. The whole subtext of X-2 is her reclaiming her agency. It has never really made much sense to me when people complain about her character changing.

Also X-2 is far less cringy than X because they know they're being campy. If you're cringing at shit that's intentionally corny, I don't know what to say to you.

People just couldn't seem to get over X-2 being more happy than X and Yuna not being a subservient female as she was for most of the game in X (she gets better by the end).

Despite what many may think, for me the setting, the costumes, the tone, the pop songs, the behavior of the people and so on make a lot of sense. Sin is finally defeated and the people can have for the 1st entertainment. Spira is changing very fast, the people want to enjoy, machina are being used, the youth want to change things, many don't want to live a conservative lifestyle anymore, and so on.
So as a sequel of ffx, ffx-2 didn't feel wrong for me.

This thread has made me want to finally install and boot this on vita. It just sounds so ridiculous and positive comments by Bladenic and Aena make me think ill have fun with it.

The battle system is glorious compared to FFX.

And I like how intentionally corny it is. To me it's the Charlie's Angels of JRPGs.

It's a steaming pile of hot garbage, but it did some cool things.

-
Shuyin being the "original" Tidus that the Fayth based him off of
-More info on Old Zanarkand
-Some cool world exposition, seeing the world post Sin
-Battle system is ace

Unfortunately it's wrapped up in a game that totally disrespects the characters of the original and doesn't even try to make a thematically appropriate sequel to the first game. The character design is crazy in a bad way. Also, pop star/idol nonsense had no place being anywhere near this game. A mess all around.

This is pretty wrong in every way. The pop stuff is silly and I can definitely see why one would hate it, but overall, the game is thematically on point. Every character from the first game receives logically consistent evolutions and we gain a ton of closure.

Yeah people also forget this. The sequel shows how non-stagnant Spira is.

I would rather someone stumbing in to my room while I watch porn than while playing this. The most cringeworthy video game I ever played.

What does the international version add/bring to the game?
There's a surprisingly fun rogue-lite game called Last Mission that's separate from the main game, and then there's the wholly awesome Creature Creator added to the main game. Creature Creator lets you capture creatures and characters (even mainline ones like Lulu and Tidus) and use them in battle. You can get multiples of formerly unique items like Iron Dukes, and there's a new uber-boss that's way harder than Trema. The arena also makes it much easier to oversoul everything to get the awesome The End garment grid.

Were you around when this came out? Because people were pitching major fits over it from the moment it was announced. Like, it was one of the first real times that gamer dudes got their underwear in a twist over not being catered to 100%.

People have been mad at FFX-2 for nearly 15 years now because a bunch of boys are insecure over anything that features girls, while at the same time protesting that no no they don't like any of that sexy stuff, not them!

The fact that people are still mad about it, so many years later, to the extent where we have people who hate it because their idiot brother was making fun of them for liking girly things, or who were traumatized because their mom saw them looking at a character in a sexy dress, tells you everything you need to know about how people handle this stuff.

Everyone in this thread is presumably an adult, maybe you should try actually acting like one.

You're really misplacing the blame...

Explain...? Or do you just mean that you aren't surprised that I hold things to some kind of standard?

I feel like this thread is the ultimate proof that FF games release as hated and become favorites over the years.

I think its definitely 1 of the worst FF's to date. Sure its game play mechanics are great, but the rest of it was complete pants. Personally it has nothing to do with the fact that this tried to be some kind of Charlies Angels wannabe, but the incredible inconsistency of going from FFX to FFX-2. The whole serious tone had been completely ripped out, large portion of the music became cheesy (WTF with Yuna singing a pop song),and Yuna going from a modest looking Summoner to sum Pop idol wannabe was just super cringe worthy. The only thing good about this title was in fact the game play mechanics, and the ending where Tidus comes back. Thats literally it. Everything in between, including the cut scenes, the story, dialog, the whole mannerism of the game, was a complete joke. This title could have been so much more, and so much better, and no one can deny that.

I don't mind having a more female orientated game. Plenty of my favourite games have female protagonists and/or a strong female presence in the game. The battle system was really good and the best use of ATB yet.

The rest of the game I couldn't stand though. The story, the characters and their shift. I mean I wasn't a big fan of Rikku in X, bht they turned her into a complete spaz in this game, and Brother for some reason became the biggest creep who wanted his cousin. If they wanted to have him into her that's one thing. Even if I find it very awkward and sickening, as someone with Asian heritage I understand that being with your cousin isn't (or wasn't) really frowned upon as much. But they turned him into a sicko and I hated whenever he was on screen. It's fine having the tone and style of the game change in the post Sin sequel. But it seemed like they just jumped headfirst into one extreme that i found jarring.

The music was all over the place. At times they had some of the best music I've ever heard in my life, but a lot of time I kept hearing this these stupod blaring cheesy tracks that did my head in. The story route thwy went with in the Good/Perfect ending butchered what made X's story work. The game also feels like it was built to sell strategy guides with so many and random missables.

After FFII, it's the worst Final Fantasy I've played. And yes that includes the XIII trilogy

I couldn't get past the whole "idol" thing. It was just a bit too cringe-worthy for me. I keep hearing it had an awesome battle system but honestly just couldn't deal with how lame I found the concept.

I feel like I need to give it another shot and look past that singing/dancing stuff. Maybe one day. Funny thing is, I'm actually pretty interested in Tokyo Mirage Sessions. I think it was the fact that this was coming straight off of X and continued the story with such a tonal shift that killed it. It really made no sense to me.

but it's not idol, like Yuna only sang once

it's a magical girl integrated into a really great class system atb battle

My memory is kinda shit, but from what I recall and what people are saying here, the idol thing isn't a thing past the very beginning of the game. In fact the whole point of the beginning of the game iirc(and i think someone mention this as well) is that yuna was being impersonated and they were pretended to be an idol and was she was trying to put a stop to that. 95% of the game has nothing to do with being an idol from what I recall, unless I'm way off.

This stuff actually sounds interesting... is the rogue-lite just search randomly generated dungeons with the games combat system? Though I didn't bother to 100% the game or even get close to that probably(In part because I actively didn't want the secret ending) that sounds like it could be fun for a while.

Never played with one. Are you people saying atb here is better than blue dragon ? (imo the best i played so far)

The story is a lot smarter than what it presents itself to be in the first 40 minutes. As a sequel to FFX, I think it completely works and is a step above the usual story that clutters the genre. How often do you get to revisit a world that is in its full rebuild phase after you've saved it?

One of the reasons why I ended up appreciating the game is that a lot of the characters you encountered in the first game get a sense of closure in X-2.

Yeah I really couldn't deal with the aesthetics at all. I had a hard enough time making it through X as it was, X-2 was like a kick in the balls. I don't care how mechanically sound gameplay can be, if I have to make it through a cringefest its just not worth it to me.

X2 is a jarringly different game. So much so that I couldn't enjoy it after X back in the day. Now though I can see it and appreciate it for what it is: Goofy , fun, batshit stupidity. I love it.

Basically, I started to adore it soon as I stopped expecting it to move me in a such an emotional way like X did.

But yet it did... unexpectedly
(Shuyin and Lenne story arc)

Best battle system in the entire Final Fantasy series, bar none. In fact, best battle system I've played in any JRPG.

The first time I played this game I had an initial negative reaction to the tone of the game, but as I progressed through the game it really grew on me. Now after having played through the game multiple times, I think it's a worthy sequel to FFX.

I can't imagine how I would react after living in a world where I knew every 10 years there would be massive global destruction and suddenly being free of that concern forever. Or how I would react if I had committed myself to a suicide mission, only to somehow make it through and save the world forever but lose the person I love.

This game explores those questions. It asks how the world would react to suddenly being free, and how someone who was deeply religious and dutiful would react to their entire world being turned upside down and having to come up with a new identity, especially after being betrayed by that very religion. And Yuna's and the Gullwings' growth throughout the game was good to see.

It's also interesting how they even brought in the political aspect of the world into the story. There's a huge gap left by the downfall of the worship of Yevon, and there are people eager to step in and try to take that power.

Then you add in the exploration of what caused Sin in the first place, what events led to the destruction of Zanarkand and caused the world to fall into such a primitive state after having huge cities with all kinds of technology. There's just so much this game added to FFX that it's a shame to not experience it at least once if you liked FFX.

I do think they went over the top a bit with some things, but much of what happens makes a lot of sense for the world and the state it would be in after what happened in FFX.

Yup. First FF game I ever dropped halfway through. I eventually came to my senses and realized I was having ZERO fun with that chore of a story/mood.

It was so grating from minute one. Regret ever spending money on that game.
It's a game about female empowerment.

Just ignore all the creepy voyeuristic upskirt shots that litter every cutscene.
Lol.
