LTTP: Half Life, Steam, and some other pc stuff

Oldschoolgamer

The physical form of blasphemy
So, since their really isn't much that I want to buy console (or handheld) wise at the moment, I decided to download some stuff off the internet(legally). I looked over a list of fps and action titles that I haven't played on pc--and console in some cases-- and found a bunch of shit I need to try.

-System Shock 2 (hadn't played much way back when)
-No one lives forever 2
-Half Life (and the various games with it)
-Half Life 2
-Shogo
-Red Faction

...and some other stuff.

I downloaded the Half Life demo off of Steam (which is a lot better than I thought, considering the hate), and was more than amazed. The game is damn good...really damn good. So good, that I just bought the anthology (which I'm currently downloading).

Yesterday, I nabbed the Half Life 2 demo. The game is fun as shit. Picking up random objects like soda cans, and bitch slapping guards with them, is fun as hell. Got to the second part of the demo and started using Saw blades, with the gravity gun. The only thing that makes me cry, is that while it does look really good on my laptop (which is old and plays it on medium settings), the framerate dies when a few enemies appear on the screen.

:( Osg, needs a new rig, heh.

Aiming with my touch pad is somthing else. lol. I need to get a mouse, but, at the moment..its much better than using the damned dual shock or wavebird. It feels good to be able to pop headshots with no lag at all.

Anyways...is their anything else I should really look into? Old games atleast. A lot of the newer stuff won't be getting played yet. lol

you used a touch pad to play an FPS? holy crap you're a stronger man than I

I reccommend the Defcon demo, Episode I and Civ 4 on steam as well (and Dreamfall/psychonauts if you haven't played it yet).

Buy a mouse! I recommend this one (Logitech G5)

Truly great picks.

If you like the stealth aspect of NOLF2, you should also check out the Thief series... first person stealth awesomeness, and I do mean awesomeness. Hitman series is less recommended, but still pretty good for stealthity fun.

I'll second the Deus Ex nod as well, fan-freaking-tastic game.

Deus Ex is a must play/have, just stay away from the second one unless you like to see why people bitch about it.
Thief 1 2 and even 3 are very good, also if you can try to find Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines it's an awsome Troika RPG.

I bought HL2 recently, I strongly recommend it.
I found the first few levels a bit dissapointing, some of it was just retreading the same ground as Half Life, but after that it's amazing, each level is a sub-genre in itself!

I tried the demo with a touch pad, it's not much fun. I actually played the entire game with a Wacom tablet, which works really well for me.

Just so you know, Ravenholm is the only survivor-horror-y part in HL2.

Oh, and BUY HL2!

That sucks. The atmosphere in that level was great. Not a deterring factor though. I'm still getting it.

I'll have to look into that mouse. Yea, Defcon is the shit. I'm not that good at it, but, its still quite awesome.

Deus Ex is something I've always wanted to play, so, I will definitely be getting that, sometime. I'll have to find some stuff about the thief series.

I'm mostly interested in Fps, BUT, i'll jump at some other genres as well. Thanks for the info. I feel like i missed out on a ton of stuff.

IÂ’ll second Bloodlines, it is a great game that doesnÂ’t get enough respect.
Just make sure that you apply the community patch to it, itÂ’s got game breaking bugs in the retail version.
Thief 1 and 2 are both brilliant, didnÂ’t care that much for 3 though.

And as for other genres

RPGs:
The Baldur's Gate series
Planescape: Torment.
Fallout 1 and 2 (even though in my mind, they havenÂ’t aged all that well).

Tactical(?):
(tactical? That sound stupid, what do you call these games anyway?)
X-Com
Jagged Alliance 2

get counter strike 1.6,counter strike source, day of defeat , day of defeat source.
try out natural selection too.

then go pro

It's part of the experience man, where else you can find a game that brings you to near insanity where you find yourself in one of the last dungeons and get stuck for hours on one freaking door because your vampire can boil blood but doesn't even know how to slide a bar to open a door?!
That aside such an awsome game the Hotel level is creepy.

Yeah, Bloodlines was a great, but terribly buggy game. Reminds me of Anachronox in that respect. There was some unofficial patches to that game too, after it had been officially abandoned.

what where is the hate for halflife btw? puzzling. never seen it

you can get thief1 and 2 packaged together as a bestof pos for pretty much nothing price. same with thief3, shouldn't cost you a lot more than nothing

all good

Congrats on your purchase of the greatest game of all time, Half-Life 1.

Now all thats left to do is get Deus Ex and you have the 2 best games ever.

I have problems recommending PC games to people who play with a touchpad. It's against my religion (Church of Borys).

fo reals, I would lose my freakin mind trying to kill something in an FPS with a touchpad
My sanity meter is decreasing just thinking about it!

Since you seem to be looking for FPS's I'm gonna also recommend getting Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, and Deus Ex (the first). Both are awesome RPG's, but with FPS style combat interface.

edit: oh wow, touch pad aiming huh, your a braver man than I. :lol

This game rocks. Half Life has easily jumped to my top 5 of all times. I like how in some situations, you have different ways of going about things. Like, face the tank, or jump through the crack in the wall and take out the soldiers. I've done a couple of things different, like, using the mines as stepping stones. I still haven't figured out the correct way of jumping with that laser though.

The cop guy is a badass. He just got pwnt a minute ago, but, damn was he serving up the soldiers with his little handgun.:lol

Its cool that even though I am playing as gordon freeman, I am the one doing shit, and not him. The "cutscenes" are brilliant, even though I got panned by a ****ing server in the beginning, because I was running to fast. Its cool being able to move around and not be forced to sit through things.

The assassins SUCK >:(
They really ****ing suck >:(
I died in that section where you first face them,a bunch of times, until I thought to actually put the remote mines down. Which leads me to another thing: most fps I have played had it set up, where your hand is basically being held, and you really don't need to think. I've gotten my ass handed for not thinking strategically in a lot of spots. Oh, and letting the soldiers and aliens fight, then cleaning up with a well placed grenade is fun as shit :D

I have no clue how far I am though o_O. I just got to the first jumping pad in the base of sorts. I'm right up at some vent with a whole bunch of those small aliens that freeman uses to attack the soldiers

Is that the part where blow the door open with the cannon? I think so.

Well, it's before Lambda complex, so you still have a bit left, maybe 25% or so...

Ravenholm is like my favorite FPS level ever. I would pay money for a game based on Ravenholm.

**** yea. Everything is perfect in that level.

I'm going to get a mouse today. I'm pretty good at sp with a touchpad, but, then I threw it on Deathmatch and Team Fortress Classic. The touchpad shit ended right there. I could hang, but, I damn sure wasn't winning anything. I'm damned good at console multi, but, wow @ the difference in accuracy.

It sucks feeling like a newb again. :(

Any tips on rocket jumping and stuff? I want to be ready by the time the second one comes out.:D

In the case of steam it's better to be late..Steam is pretty damned good now...it's was terrible back when it was new, though

Good score on Shogo...it looks horrible now, but that game was so ****ing fun. the energy shotgun thingamabob is <3

After playing my first FPS game ever, Bioshock, I am looking forward more kickass fps games and HL 1 and 2 are next on my list. Will probably pick up the Orange Baux for 360.

Everyone's mentioning Half Life, but what about the original Unreal game? Was it any good as a single player game?

You sir have DAMN GIGANTIC BALLS to be playing FPS with a touchpad.

I can't frag shit with it.

I salute you.
