LTTP: Persona 4 Golden

Quick question:

I'm level 32, going through
Rise's
dungeon.
Her's is the one after Kanji's right?
Any suggestions on some good Persona's to fuse at my level?

Currently I've been doing fine with an Andra with all ma- spells and invigorate 2 and whatever the hp equivalent of invigorate is. The Andra happened to get a ton of stat ups as well. I also use a Rakshasa for physical stuff.

Any suggestions on something else to start building towards, or a great one with little to no weaknesses? Also, maybe something with all 4 second level single target spells?

At Level 38 get Black Frost, he'll last you a large portion of the middle section of the game. Mind Charge + Agidyne with Fire Amp deals some pretty great damage and he has no weaknesses, absorbing Fire and Ice while reflecting Dark.

As for 32... can't recall in particular and it shouldn't really matter as long as you're covering your bases. If you want some suggestions of what people at that point are fusing you can use the Voice function on the fusion screen much like you can in town to see what other players did.

Honestly you don't need all 4 spell types on one persona. Switching between them is easy and you have your teammates to cover types as well. As the game goes on it becomes less necessary to fuse those attacks onto personas when you start fusing on passive abilities to absorb and null certain types.

My main persona endgame was my awesome Yoshitsune whose only actual attack was Hassou Tobi that absorbed/nulled/repelled or resisted every type of attack.

His set up was Hassou Tobi/Power Charge/Arms Master/Null Dark/Null Ice/Absorb Fire/Absorb Wind and Debilitate.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I was leaning towards Easy, but ended up going with Normal. Probably better to play at a reasonable level if I want to get a proper feel for the genre.

Another quick question - is there some kind of weird motion blur effect going on, and if so, can it be turned off?

Taotie can be fused at level 35 and was handy when I didn't know what an enemy would throw at me. No weaknesses, repels dark. I think you have to use triangle fusion to get it, though.

Once you have more persona slots, there's no real need to have one that has all of the different types of attacks; you can just keep a few specialists around and switch at the beginning of a turn. Boost and Amp skills are much more valuable than having multiple types of attacks.

Easy increases your damage output, and decreases the damage you take. It makes the game much less grindy to complete. Very easy gives you waaay more XP and money, meaning that grinding is absolutely unnecessary, and simply fighting half the monsters you encounter will overlevel. It also lets you continue a battle after you die. When your HP hits zero, you can chose to have it be completely refilled, along with SP (not to mention the same happens for the whole party) while your enemy's health remains the same. Simply put you cannot loose.

For an non grindy playthrough, choose easy, If you don't want to have to worry about combat at all, choose very easy

There's no need to grind in P4. P4G basically tosses wealth hands at the player to keep them leveled up.

There's some slight ghosting but you won't notice it after awhile.

Yeah any grinding in P4G will leave you over levelled really.

It's always more advisable to fuse or change up your strategy over grinding in this game.

It is entirely possible, even probable that I suck at the game. Turn based games have never been my forte, but I'm a sucker for everything about JRPGs so I play em anyway. If I'm not overleveled I get rolled.

I think I was rocking an Incubus around that level.

Just realised that I had quite an affinity with personas of the Devil arcana. Starting with that Incubus, I went to a Succubus, then Belphegor with all the auto team boosters, carried those to a Belial with null-light and finally big bad Beelzebub where no attack could touch him. Taking on the Reaper with that bad boy, was like something out off a Godzilla movie.

Just got killed by
Shadow Yosuke (shut up, I didn't realise right away that he was charging up when he went into the defensive position)
, and all I can say is thank christ for the fast-forward mechanic. Even with the ability to scrub back to where I was at high speed, it still took me about 10 minutes to get there.

I'm only like 5 hours into the game, but I definitely feel like it is one of the most complete and polished games I own on my Vita. The battles and character dialogue are so compelling that you get sucked in for an hour long play-sesh. Which is also my problem too. You'd think on a handheld console you'd be playing it a lot on the road, but I become way to anxious to start playing in an environment where I'd miss anything important to the story, and it's just too good to put down in a shortened play time. One of my favorite games though. Also, not understanding the whole "waifu" thing atm.

I'm in love with Kanji~
I can't believe you can't date him! All the news coverage about how progressive P4 is was so misleading.

Teddy sometimes tells you to guard when he does that. Sometimes.
Yeah, sometimes Teddie can be about as helpful as-

So I'm in
Rise's
dungeon, how far do I have to go before I can go back to save and be able to jump right back to where I left off?

I'm happy this thread was bumped. It gives me a chance to expand on my views on the game.

I found my first real negative about the game last dungeon
(Video Game theme)
, where I made it all the way to the boss door only to find I had to backtrack like 4 levels to retrieve an arbitrary key to unlock it. No mention of it prior so that I wouldn't walk past it by accident, which I did, because I was trying to conserve SP.

This wouldn't be so bad if the dungeons weren't as generic and tedious as they are. They sometimes stretch on for ridiculously long. 7 or 8 levels of the same corridors rearranged randomly is really not fun.

Otherwise, the game is still awesome and ridiculously addictive.

That was intentional. You could not open the door at level 4 yet. I forgot the floor numbers but it basically goes like this (the floor numbers may be wrong)

You go into the dungeon. You see a door on floor 4 that you cannot open if you come across it. At floor 8 you find a key that will open the door on floor 4. You go back to floor 4 and enter the room and fight the mini boss. This gives you another key to get past floor 8.

As far as I recall that's not the case. What you're describing is more similar to Naoto's
Secret Laboratory. You need to go to B6, get a key, go back to B4 to get another key and then move on in order to get to B7.
From what I remember Void Quest can be done with no backtracking as long as you don't skip/miss the mini-boss.

So I'm about 2 hours into this now and having a pretty good time. I feel like I'm still part-way through a really long tutorial at this stage, but I'm glad the game is easing me into the mechanics.

One thing I wanted to ask about is how juggling the various Personas works out. I've already collected about four of them and there's been talk about Fusing them to create even more. Is there a particular way to handle them I should be working towards? Do I favour a few and ignore the rest, or should I be trying to use them all evenly? Am I going to end up with 50 of the things by the mid-game point?

Another thing I wanted to ask about was the Tactical stuff. In the fight with
Shadow Chie
I noticed that Yosuke's primary Persona attack was strong against her, but he'd frequently opt for his swords rather than use it (even when he had plenty of... mana? Whatever the resource is called in this game). I couldn't find a way to order him to use it rather than his blades - is there a way to do that?

You just fuse a Persona with better skills and resists. Also try to form a set of Personas that covers as many bases as possible (like every element, or some supports). You don't want to fight regular battles where you don't have the element you need, since it can spell the difference between winning in one round or taking so long you use up too much SP for attacks/heals.

If you could find a way to fuse Valkyrie early on, she's great for the boss of the first dungeon because of Media (heal all).

During MC's turn, go to Tactics and change Yosuke's tactics to Direct Command. If you prefer to keep party members as AI, dunno, I don't think P4G has "Exploit Weakness" tactic for them which IIRC P3 had.

I'm at the end of that dungeon and have failed 3 times to defeat
shadow teddie
. My hits do such low damage and i'm almost always 1 Mabufula away from being KO'd since my guy seems to be weak to ice.

Change your weaknesses and resistances by switching Persona. Get a Jack Frost or something to block it entirely.

I'd recommend using Ganga if you can, of the Priestess arcana. She absorbs Ice, and at 33 learns Mediarama.

For anyone having trouble, seriously, get your main character a persona that has a heal all ability, as it really is invaluable for a boss fight. Also figure out what elemental a boss does and plan accordingly. Never ever use a persona that's weak to a boss's element.

Getting this game tomorrow. (PS2 though) All the gameplay I've seen looks tight, but the social/story stuff looks most interesting. Hopefully it still holds up

Changing persona made this waaay easier. I had a lvl 32 ganga in my inventory luckily. I ended up doing 90% of the fight with just
Chie as Yukiko and Yasuke kept getting KO'd

Here's a rule of thumb that will help you immensely; always ditch underleveled Persona's and replace them with new ones. If they're 4-5 levels lower than your protagonist, then it's time for you to let them go. This is because battle calculations take level into account, so even a strong Persona with high stats will suck if its level is low.

Consider this; a Persona with the strongest skills in the game will still be weak if its at a low enough level. Andra is a level 20 Persona at base, so i'm guessing you brought it up to 26 to 27, meaning it'll be ineffective in the dungeon you're about to enter(the enemies are in the late 20s/early 30s range). You need to transition into a new Persona, even if your current one has good stats. Fortunately, P4G makes it easy to pass on skills, so any of the skills that Andra currently possesses can be passed on to stronger Persona.

My suggestion for the dungeon:
Ganga - lvl 29 Priestess arcana (I hope you leveled up Yukiko's Social Link)
Notable traits: Absorbs Ice (useful for the upcoming boss...), Mediarama, and Evade Fire

Unicorn - lvl 29 Hierophant arcana (I hope you leveled up Dojima's Social Link)
Notable traits: Blocks Ice (see above), Zionga/Mazionga, Mahama

Ose: -lvl 31 Fool arcana
Notable traints: Power Charge, Atom Smasher, Auto Sukuja, Looks cool (as in, it looks cool)

I really like the added importance of Social Links in gameplay, it's all about the waifus

So I'm in the
castle looking for Yukiko
, and my entire team is either out or almost out of SP, and I've run out of items that'll replenish it. Is there anything I can do about that?

I'm a little concerned that after slogging through what feels like a dozen bloody floors of this castle I'm going to get my ass kicked at the end because no-one has enough SP to use their Personas.

You gotta leave and come back another day. Soul snuff and the soda from vending machines give you SP...stock up on those. Also, use normal attacks on easier enemy types.

This game singlehandedly got me back into JRPG's. Just bought Chrono Trigger and Rainbow Moon...

use item goho-m, it will let you leave the dungeon. go home, rest up, and enter the tv the next day. talk to teddie and he will bring you to the floor you left at.

im addicted to this game by the way and im embaressed to admit how much i played it this weekend. im 50 hours deep and im currently
in "heaven" fighting the shadow boss to rescue nanako
.

and i usually hate jrpgs

Sweet, thanks for the tips!

Oh, for real? I assumed that I'd lose my floor progress if I bailed. Thanks!

Just go home and do it next time. Use a Goho-M (Teddie gives you some before the castle I think). The first dungeon is difficult to do in one day. The rest is a lot more doable (to the point of being easy). If you need more SP, buy all the TaP sodas in the southern shopping district vending machine and whatever soda from the north (they refill every week).

Keep the deadline in mind though. It's always best to finish a dungeon as soon as possible.

This game is doing stuff to me. I bought it yesterday and I've already got over 7 hours logged. That's unheard of for me. I'm annoyed at having to wait for my Vita to charge so I can try the goddamned
Yukiko
battle again.

What've you done to me, PersonaGAF.

Welcome to the good side of gaming.

Welcome to the good side of gaming.

It's a nice side to visit, but I don't know if I could live here!

I've never had to juggle this many things in a game before; the combat alone has more stats than anything I've ever played, from the strengths and weaknesses of both my own critters and the enemy, to the status of my teammates and what they're doing at any given time, to what's in my inventory and what equipment everybody's using.

Add to that the need to cultivate social connections, buy and sell gear, fuse new Personas... I've already broken out a notebook to start writing shit down.

It's all making for a very interesting ride.

I'm still pretty early on have to rescue/save the first person I think. I'm finding it difficult because I'm low on HP and theres NO healing items anywhere or shops inside dungeons. I don't want to leave the dungeon because then it forwards time to evening/next day. What can I do? I can' t survive anymore fights because I've ran out of items and have low HP. I was enjoying the game until now.

I just lost against the final boss with one hit remaining because it killed my MC at full health/guarding. So frustrating, but I guess that's what I get for trying to get through it underleveled. I don't want to go through that long fight again though.

Just go home. It's intended for you to have to go home after a while. There's always another day, unless you did the dungeon on the deadline. If you somehow got stuck in that unwinnable situation, you can just let the deadline pass and get a gameover. The game will rewind 1 week back.

They intentionally made SP items very scarce so that you don't last forever in dungeons. It's pretty much the "stamina system". In P3, they went with an artificial fatigue system which didn't feel as natural.

Pro tip : focus on social skills and social links for your party at first. You'll finish all social links with extended days on new game plus with true true ending.

Well later you have enough money for the
Fox to refill your SP
.

I am currently opening chests in a row ... a lot of them. I am still a bit afraid what will happen :-)

A question about the Golden additional content: Do I have to do anything aside from the True Ending to unlock the new epilogue?

I still didn't start my Golden playthrough, but I definitely will this year and I can't wait for it, but I don't wanna miss anything new. I wouldn't need a Vita to play through vanilla P4 again, after all.
