LTTP: Resident Evil 4 (and the entire series)

RE4 being $10 and Devil May Cry being $3 at Gamestop pushed me into buying a slim PS2 a little earlier than I expected, so here I am playing it on chapter 3-3. Wow. Every character so far is likeable to some degree (even Ashley!), the controls grow on you, and the world is so well-realized that it's amazing when you find out
the village is only half (?) the game
. I've kept myself spoiler free from this game so I don't know what else awaits me, but I've been happy so far. (Please mark spoilers so I know not to read them until I'm done.)

Are any other games in this series worth playing? I've played the demo for RE5 and didn't care for it, and I've heard it's no good anyway.

RE 1/2 and the Remake are the most fun BUT keep in mind that they are completely different games (Survival horror instead of action)

I think that If you like the atmosphere each and everyone of them is worth playing even the so hated on RE 0. I'd kill for a new RE like that in HD and widescreen. Just imagine how fucking awesome the rendered backgrounds would look in HD..

afaik cube version is the definitive version.

How is the Wii version not the definitive one? I have the cube version but I don't want to sit 3 feet from my Wii to play it.

Congrats OP for picking up a great game. It is however a terrible entry point into the series since the first 3(5) play nothing like it. You might enjoy 5 but 4 is the clear superior unless you really love coop and mercenaries.

The Wii version is factually the definitive version. It has the visuals/sound of the Gamecube version, Assignment Ada from the PS2 version with semi-upgraded visuals, Wii controls and Gamecube controls if you want to use the original controls.

RE:CV is the secret best RE game, pre-4.

5's badness is overstated, it's certainly no 4 but as long as you have a co-op buddy for the last ~third of the game, it's enjoyable. AI Sheva loses her goddamn mind when you get to the factory.

knee shot someone with the knife -> suplex is super fun too. RE4 is probably my favourite action game of all time.

Nice topic! Hopefully my RE4 Wii Edition arrives today :D

I'm thinking about playing other RE games (chronologically if possible) before though. What's the "correct" order to do this? (Feel free to include spin offs as well)
That said, I have finished RE1 multiple times (Saturn version ftw), RE2, Re3 and RE:CV. But that was a looong time ago, so I wanna catch up on the story.

Also what's GAFs take on RE:Zero?

I'd just go with the best ones. Playing through the *entire* series would take a really long time. Especially if you wanna replay some of them (you should definitely replay REmake at least once just to have played it as both characters).

REmake is the best of the classics in my opinion. RE0 is similar and is a pretty good game. Maybe more linear than REmake, but still great. The only thing which may make someone hate it is that it is technically a coop game where you're forced to play with the AI all the time. But if you really hate him, you can simply leave him behind in a random room while you go explore.

Chronologically, RE0 happens before REmake, but I don't think it really matters. RE0 is set up in a way where it expects the player to have played RE1 anyway.

So yeah, I'd go with REmake->RE0->RE4->RE5 if I were you.

I loved it, if you know the weakness of the annoying dude that keeps attacking you (like Nemesis in RE3) it's a piece of cake. Loved the MCs and the locations, the bonus mission(s) were shit though..Leech hunt? Really Capcom?

Liked it better than CV for some reason, can't remember why exactly..

Oh "GAF" hates it of course, GAF (only) hates everything :D

I think there's been a little over lap of communication here. He was talking about the definitive version of RE2 since you have the choice of playing the PSone, Dreamcast, N64 or Gamecube versions of that game.

Everyone knows the best version of RE4 is the Wii edition. Although if you can only get your hands on the PS2 or Gamecube versions don't feel bad. They rock, too.

GameCube for me, since viewing the Dreamcast or N64 extras is something easily done in the age of Youtube and GameFAQs. PSone's not a bad option either; you can buy the game on PSN and play it on the go.

The DC version does have a nice difficulty mode called Nightmare, if you're into the challenge.

RE4, oh the days!!! LOVED THAT GAME when I first played it and wish I could have experienced it for the first time again.

Playing RE0 for the first time ATM. It's alright, but is there any way I can conserve bullets, as in any particular place I should be shooting zombies? Still on the train bit, so far so good.

RE4 was my favourite game last-gen. And my personal RE5 has been Alan Wake. If you liked RE4, I'm quite sure you will like AW.

Himuro said:
Heh. RE4 is still about item conservation and tactics. You will be fucked if you try to kill everything with your guns.

This is what I do:

Shoot one bullet in the head, if the Ganados is crouched over after this, that means you can run in an kick him. A kick sends him flying, and this is effective against groups. So you can end up mowing down a whole group of enemies with one kick, then while they're on the ground, pull out the knife and slash the Ganados to death.

If kicking doesn't work, a suplex will. Shoot them in the knee and they'll react. If their reaction in a slightly crouched position, you can run in and suplex them. Suplexing has a higher % than average of beheading the enemies compared to kicking as well.

Using only guns won't get you far and it's not very fun.

Using guns in combination with melee is where the fun is and it makes the game a lot easier too since you're not wasting ammo as a lot of the enemies in RE4 are bullet sponges who can easily be killed using non-conventional methods.
Really? I use guns almost exclusively and I haven't had a problem with ammo. But then, I switch between the Punisher, the shotgun, and the TMP and can use all of them pretty well. At the beginning, though, yes: use the knife.

I enjoyed them. I stopped to video chat my girlfriend when I rescued Ashley, and also because of the disappointing feeling of
oh...I have to be her.
Hopefully it won't be too bad.

This game kicks ass. I'll find REmake. Thanks dudes.

I've been interested in this for a while but it seemed like it was disappointing; maybe that's just GAF being GAF. I may rent it for my roommate's Xbox.

Same. Also I always felt that the first village scene is the hardest part of the whole game due to that. I might have to step up my knife skills in my next playthrough.

I will definitely pick up REmake. I just hope it does not get too boring because I know RE1 so well.

Also I vastly prefer RE1 to RE2. It's much more scary and I prefer the awesome b-movie style to the more comical look.

Am I wrong in feeling RE4 is kinda like MGS3? Ya got your foresty intro area and then rundown kinda buildings, the awkward controls, and plenty of (trying to) sneaking around O.o

Leon's got 3 health and yet he's like kinda limping and the health meter is orange and not green what am I affected with and how do I clear it? I think I'm gonna start over. I had to use each green herb I've found, hardly have any money and only the start 1st aid spray and I just suck! Oh and there is no easy mode so I'm doomed no matter what e.e

When I first got it, I begged for an easy mode, but stuck with it and when you get the controls you'll be doing headshots left and right. You managed to pass the first chapter, that a really big first step, no real need to start over.

Also, are you breaking the barrels and boxes for extra ammo and money right?
And did you get the shotgun from a house?

But really, once you're used to that laser sight, you're all good.

Oh and combine Yellow herbs with green herbs, and you raise your maximum health.

I finished RE 1 a dozen times and still had my fun with the Remake. There is enough new stuff to not get bored.

While I think that the second one is one of the greatest games ever made I also would like to see the series return to the scenery of the first game with it's empty (or are they?) hallways and the spooky atmosphere, RE2 still had a nice mixture of action and suspense but yeah it was kinda actiony.

Resident Evil up to 4 is amazing, specially 2 and Code Veronica. Purists like myself still have not played either 4 or 5 because of it's obvious terrible change.

I do to need to start over lol I wanna save up some health items and maybe I'll suck alil less through the first chapter? How do you break boxes and barrels? I haven't broken any and from what I read in the manual shooting them would make them explode not give out goodies! I haven't found a yellow herbs yet just a couple greens dropped by dead guys which is again another MGS3-ism lol.

I'm talking about these barrels

images

You break them with your knife, and I can't find a picture of the boxes, but they're light colored boxes, inside houses in general, and if you check them it says something like "it appears they can be broken"

Knife them as well.

As for Yellow herbs, you'll find them in the enviroment. There's one in the first chainsaw area, explore that area thoroughly, lots of ammo, health and treasure ;)

I had no idea >_<! Thanks that should help alot! I haven't been to a chainsaw place yet but I'll be sure to scour areas for loot while running through them away from the crazy peoples!

But you got through the fist chapter right?

In one of the first parts of the game, when you reach the village and there's a lot of Ganados, if you enter one of the houses (the one with the shotgun in it) you'll trigger an event where chainsaw guy comes in. It's like 20 minutes in.

He can also spawn if you get to close to a certain door he's guarding.

But nvm that, just kill the guys and THEN look for ammo in these places. ;)

You will also find some Red Herbs, which can only be used when combined with a green herb. A Red+Green combo will restore your health fully. At the very start, do NOT USE this combination, save the red herbs for later, until you beef up your health up a bit with yellow herbs. One green herb will restore about 80% of your starting health anyway.

EDIT

If you are worried about starting over due to lack of items, sit in the farm for a while and collect eggs :D Though starting over might actually be quicker...

What about RE:CV? I loved RE:CV.
CV is a pretty horrible game for a beginner :lol.

If you think you can trudge through the bad parts of RE x10, then you should play it. It still has its awesome parts.

The REmake was made for people who know the original inside out. It plays with your expectations in ways you can't imagine. If you loved RE1 on PSone/Saturn/wherever you will almost definitely love REmake on Gamecube/Wii.

One of the Bosses is called Nosferatu?
Alexander Ashford, Alfred's Dad, who Alexia performed tests on then locked up in the basement of the Arctic base and you have to fight him on top of that tower.

Playing a 4:3 game on my hdtv has never left me feeling as cramped for space as this game is doing!

RE4 supports progressive scan and widescreen. You should not be playing in 4:3. (EDIT: nevermind, GC version doesn't support that. Thank you for the correction, Dead Man.)

(Also, keep at it, you'll improve with practice because it's a well-designed game that actually presents a challenge that can be mastered.)

As per GAFs voting I'm about ta start RE4 to! Can anyone recommend a good guide for me ta use? There's so many an oddly none on gamefaqs are credited to cvxfreak! I gots the 'cube version btw. When I first tried this game years ago I died on the first enemy Mario 1-style. Surely the same fate won't befall me again!?

The Gamecube version has Progressive Scan support in the US and JP versions, but it doesn't have Widescreen support. Most HDTVs have some kind of zoom option, which could maybe make the image fill the whole screen, depending on the TV. It wouldn't look much worse than the Wii version in widescreen, because when the Wii and PS2 versions are set to 16:9 all they do is eliminate the borders and stretch the image to fit the screen. It doesn't render at a larger resolution or anything.

Everything else you said is very correct.

Okay I restarted!

Then I did again. And again. And again, again, again for more then an hour. I was detemined to get through the very first area with all 5 health. Didn't happen. I let it go an moved on and died many times but finished the first chapter with lotsa money an items at least. Problem is I dunno what to sell/buy/upgrade! I got some beer mug and spinels and a golden egg and idk what to do with it all! Should I buy the bigger attache case or the rifle or upgrade stuffs? Mix green herbs together to free up alil extr space or what?

This is why I wanted to use a guide, well this and not getting caught off guard and dying. This game needed God Hands mini radar!

Man, I should really replay this again someday in Normal Mode :lol Especially after I heard I missed out a bit. Though dog mazes and suits of armour sound scary :(

Also, I fucking loved RE4, but I have noooooooo desire whatsoever to play the older games or RE5. Maybe I'll get Revelations on 3DS, but aside from that, no interest.

Keep the gems but sell the spinels. The gems can be inserted into certain treasures, such as the beerstein which you have. Anything that allows the option to insert should not be sold until all gems have been inserted. There are several items like this throughout the game.

If you didn't get the shotgun from the house, buy it. Upgrade it. There are slightly better shotguns later in the game but the first one is very, very good. Buy a rifle too, preferably the bolt-action one because it's more powerful.

Always buy a bigger case when you get the chance. Halfway through the game it starts to become very packed very quickly.

The preferable thing is to mix green herbs with red herbs, which is a full refill of health, but only use these when you're very low on life - otherwise it would be a waste. You can mix green with green, and it's still a sizeable refill. You should also mix green with yellow when you find a (rare) yellow herb, since it extends your max health.

Not getting hit helps[/jerkmode]

But seriously, there is usually an audible warning when you are being creeped up on. When you hear "iDetras de ti, imbecil!" It's time to run forward, quickturn, and cap'em in the knee.

On selling, sell the Spinels, keep the Beerstien until you place 3 other treasures into it (the combinable treasures throughout the game will give you massive funds). You can buy a treasure map, but if you are already looking everywhere anyway you might not need one. Always look up in trees.

And no, you don't need a guide :p

If you didn't get the shotgun from the house, buy it. Upgrade it. There are slightly better shotguns later in the game but the first one is very, very good. Buy a rifle too, preferably the bolt-action one because it's more powerful.

Hmm, won't the shotgun still be there when she goes back?

As far as using a guide is concerned, I'd use a treasure guide to make sure I found them all. Otherwise, a lot of the fun and satisfaction comes from devising your own tactics for each combat scenario (and I don't know if a guide would go into depth on that anyway). You could consult a weapon FAQ too, if you really are worried about choosing the "wrong" weapons for your play style.

One bit of advice is that the first shotgun will last you a very long time, and you might want to skip the second one altogether. Also, you gotta get the rifle because it's necessary and awesome. The real decision comes when you can get a different rifle, which is weaker but you don't have to reload. If your accuracy is still poor by the time that gun becomes available, you might want to get it.

General tips: I always upgrade suitcases as soon as possible. And don't miss those yellow herbs! (You have to combine then with Green herbs to use them.)

I'm not sure why you're so fixated in conserving all your health. You're gonna get hit in this game.. a lot.. and die.. a lot.

As long as you have a few herbs to spare you'll be fine.

On the subject of weapons.. it seems you didn't find the shotgun at the beggining? :(
Well first things first, You'll need extra space. It's the most important stuff.

Never sell guns/ammo/health unless you really need the extra space right away.
Upgrade the guns you own and buy whatever you feel you need.

Most people have a handgun a shotgun and a rifle. And upgrade accordingly.

Later on you can buy different guns, and you have to see if you wanna get the new model. All the money you spent on tuning your old weapons will be counted when you want to sell them, so don't worry about it.

It really seems you are approaching this with the wrong mindset.

Really, don't worry about it.

I got through another chapter which make 2 down! I'm totally turning into a hardcore action/shooter gamer now *cool*

Well not really cause I can't aim for crap and waste alot of bullets. I did manage to shoot down a sickle thrown at me but trust me that was a fluke I was aiming for a guy and that got hit instead! The reason I wanted to keep health through at least the first area was cause when ya die it respawns ya with whatever health ya had going into an area and cause I wanted to at least feel like I was getting better which I'm not!

I did get the shotgun I just never used it yet cause of past RE experiences its best ta save that for non-grunt baddies. I did finally found one yellow herb but it hardly raised my health at all! I bought the bigger case but didn't have enough moneys left over for upgrading or rifle purchasing. I hope that vendor shows up again soon! I hate when they send waves and waves and waves of guys at you its like geez c'mon lemme advance already where are all these guys coming from anyway?? :lol

For now I stopped cause chainsaw guy showed up and totally killed me and I was just like oh gawd I can't deal with this right now after all I just went through!! Should I use the shotgun on him? Keep the tips coming cause they've been real helpful!

The shotgun is for everyone, but especially for the chainsaw guy. For normal grunts in groups, aim for the face of whoever is front and center and let them get within a few virtual feet before firing. I'd say it's a must (for a beginner) to use the shotgun on the chainsaw guy because it knocks him down and you'll need the additional time and distance that provides.

There's your problem. Shotgun is for whenever you're starting to feel uncomfortable with the situation. A few zombies getting to close? pop that shotgun out and blast them.

You definately wanna use the shotgun for that chainsaw guy. One blast and he'll fall to the ground where you can keep shooting with shotgun or handgun. Or even knife him (this works really well). And when he's getting up again, bam! shoot it again.

Don't worry about ammo, unless you waste 20 bullets for every guy you'll never ever run out.

Did you get how to kick the zombies by the way?

Oh um so the I should use more then the handgun/knife/kicks got it! Time to shotgun away mwahahaha! Guess what I beat a boss! It only took like 4 or 5 deaths. Why are vehicle segments in games never good >_> How many chapters are there in the game? Have I made any progress?? Anyways I'm liking the game now. All that die die die advance die more stuff really reminded me of old school gaming goodness where ya played and played until ya were able to squeak out a win. But there still really needs to be more healing items or at least heal ya at the start of each chapter! So brutal.

What vehicle segment are you talking about? I can only remember one...

The game is surprisingly long. There are 6 chapters, though the last is a short one.

The boat-boss! That counts as a vehicle segment right?

According to the game time I've play 2 hours and 35 minutes so far but you all say the game is like 20 hours? And to think I finished RE2 in under 3 hours wayback when, I guess I gots a long way ta go...

Beat it the first time in like 16 hours. It's very different from oldschool RE games. And congratulations on beating the first boss! Now the game really starts getting good.

I recently finished my second play through (on Pro, GC via Wii), finish Assignment Ada and I am on a quest to get the Chicago Typewriter. I just don't get tired of this game!
When I played through on Pro, I did not know that you can carry through all your guns/money from the first time around D'oh!
