LTTP: Resident Evil 4 (and the entire series)

Lindsay said:
If 4 wasn't so dang hard I could see myself replaying it (um if I ever finish it to begin with) unlike those other two. But as it is all the 'cube RE's are just to much for me to replay!

If you need any other motivation to push through this game than it should be the knowledge that this game has a NewGame+ where you restart the game with the inventory of the game you just completed. Maxed out Pistol and Shotgun from the begining? I'm sure that will lower the difficulty of a second playthough.

Which series has a worse story: Kingdom Hearts or Resident Evil?

I get a headache trying to decide which.
Resident Evil is not even in the same stratum of incomprehensibility as Kingdom Hearts, man.

I love Resident Evil 4 as much as anyone, but man, it really had a ridiculous and completely unsatisfying story.

I dearly missed the setting of the mansion and all of Raccoon City I must say. Felt rather hollow when 4's credits rolled. It wasn't important to the larger RE story at all.

I always had a completely hopeless fantasy for the perfect RE game: a combined remake of RE2/3 running on the RE4/5 gameplay engine/style with a multiplayer component that essentially was RE:Outbreak, but you know, actually good. It would have comprised the total package for the 'Escape from Raccoon City'.
Oh I wouldn't say that, it introduced Las Plagas (which was carried over to RE5) and showed us what became of Ada, Wesker and Leon since RE2. RE3 and CV were much more useless IMO.

As I go along I'm playing without a walkthough as I like the suprises, but I have been occasionally looking at GameFAQ for sections that I've already completed.

The one thing that I've learned from this is that I really have to learn to do a better job of checking out the environment when fighting bosses. Pretty much every boss encounter has had a much easier way of doing things that I've missed out on. I was just fighting one of those masked wolverine claw guys in a tiny little locked cage and never even realized that I could blast off the locks to get out. In my defense these locks take a few shots and I'd never encountered them before, so I didn't realize that they just took more of a beating. After finally taking him out in that little enclosed space I was actually still trapped in that cage for a while looking for some way out until I got annoyed and just pounded on the lock with the shotgun, which ended up finally breaking it and letting me out.

Same deal with the first time that I battled this guy, I didn't get how to use the bells to distract him and ended up just having to run all over the place and sneak off quick shots to wear him down. I need to be more observant going forward.

Ohhhh, right, I totally forgot about that. What a piece of shit - no wonder I erased it from my mind. Although, that's not true, it wasn't totally horrible, just too hard to control with touch controls.

Deep Dive/ASAS when I first saw it made me the happiest person in existence, but KHII isn't really, uh, fun. I wish they could just make a full CG movie of that awesome shit that's in the bonus movies or write a book. I don't want to play the games. (I've been keeping up with the story through TVTropes. Why the fuck do they put the
Deep Dive playthrough
on something as 3D-weak as the fucking DS?)

I'm sure the 3DS and PSP are capable of more than that, but I still agree: yuck.

How about a nice HD PS3/360 upgrade, King-of-milking Capcom? I'd settle for just a resolution bump, but Move controls and a nice texture overhaul would be great.

What do ya mean?? I've owned RE2 since it came out and the same for REØ & REmake and have finished all of them! I had also beaten RE3 on a rental but never CV yet. Got RE4 for christmas in 2006 but died early on and gave up until GAF goaded me into giving it another try ~_~;
I thought the game was hard too at first. That opening sequence was one of the hardest opening sequences I can remember playing. Maybe I was just doing it wrong. Being so used to the older REs, I was all about avoiding confrontation and conserving items and ammo. It took me several times to get passed it. And now I just play little 20 minute bursts about once every 3-6 months. I really want to get into it and smash through it, but it just doesn't hold my attention. I've had a lot of fun with everything so far, but I just can't stick to it, I dunno why.

RE5 for some reason I was able to get through pretty quickly though :/

Careful, that could could be thin ice you're walking across there.

I started playing RE4 Wii Edition [I've had it since its launch] this past weekend and I don't like how ugly it looks [it plays absolutely fine, mind you :D], I've to play it far far from the TV :lol

I mean, most Wii games look fine/good on my TV, but this one... is the game running in less than 640x480? I don't mind the dithering, but it looks like the game in being zoomed in instead of upscaled :P

First 3-1 and now 3-2 felt like it would never end! The invisible baddies were thankfully few in number still one did kill me and seeing Leons half melted face kinda made me wanna barf. After that lotsa enemies with stupid crossbows and a leader in red mowing me down with a gatling gun! Passing all of that after numerous tries a freaking maze full of evil dogs! argh! Good ol' shotty put them down though allowing me to make it through another chapter. At least now I have 3 r/g herb mixtures, 2 health sprays, and I think a y/g herb mixture plus a bunch of ammo save for rifle ones which are scarce. Really need a bigger case since I hate having to leave stuff behind!

Yes, the game is running in less than 480p. Widescreen is achieved by zooming in on the original letterboxed GCN image. If you run the game in 4x3, it will play in it's original native resolution in letterbox mode.

That doesn't really qualify for the "X game should be on X console" anti-whining rule, does it? I'm the Wii version's biggest advocate this side of cvxfreak! I'm just greedy for more.

Welcome to the club :lol

I find it REALLY hard to bear with the presentation of this game. Especially after RE5.

Just run it in 4:3, unless the black bars prove too constricting for you. The game just looks awful in 'widescreen,' and though there is still shimmering and dithering in 4:3, it just looks much more respectable.

The village cops it the most out of the three main areas, though. It does get a bit better as you progress.

In some cases your TV's own "Zoom" setting might do a better job with the 4:3 letterboxed image. That's what I did with the old Cube version.

Sagitario said:
OK, 4:3 it is, at least it wont be zoomed :P

If not, well... there is always the old tube TV with [ugh!] composite cables...

I can only play this on my old CRT (component). It looks absolutely fantastic. Hopefully once I get a decent upscaler it will look a little better on my HD set but w/e.

The PS2 version really doesn't look that bad. True it doesn't touch the GC and is missing a lot of great effects like the rippling water, real time shadows and light sources, the nice global ambient lighting that gives Leon's hair it's sexy sheen, the sheer number of onscreen enemies, etc. Even so it's still easily one of the best looking games on the ps2 and that's entirely on the strength of the game's art and assets. I'm blown away that they even managed such a faithful facsimile. I am still driven to just stop and admire the detail in some of the areas like the Gigante arenas, or certain rooms in the castle with ornate candelabras and chandeliers reflected in the floor and the "windy hallway" with the billowing curtains.

It may be an inferior port, but at the same time I see it as one of the greatest technical achievements in the last generation.

What I like best about the PS2 version was their obvious dedication to making sure the game RUNS perfectly, which it does. It seems like many times the visuals are prioritized over the performance, and Capcom probably could have made the PS2 version look closer to the Gamecube version if that had been their focus. But they made the right decision and put gameplay first.

But you're right; even so it's still a contender for best-looking PS2 game.

Phew I got through 3-3 today. It was quite nice. Lotsa loot to reload up with, a even bigger attache case to buy, and only like 2 rooms with baddies and the fights themselves weren't that bad as I think I only died once which is a new record for me! I did get a scare though... I was in a safe room supposed to be no enemies just items to gather and a I break a vase or something and a snake comes out and gets me >_<!

You can always try combining 4:3 with your TV's zoom setting... on several TV's I've tried it on, this ends up looking better than the Wii zooming it.

Mike is such a prick on Professional. “Hey Leon, I’m just gonna fly around until you kill everyone, and then I’m gonna pointlessly blow shit up.”

Drinks are no longer on me, jerk.

I just finished Pro round with both the Chicago Typewriter and Infinite Rocket Launcher. So much fun, but it does take the challenge out. But fun nonetheless. I was shocked how fast I earned another million by selling all the ammo I found after I got the typewriter.
FWIW, I am playing RE4 on my Wii but Gamecube version. I am using my LG tv zoom and it looks pretty damn good, better than a lot of Wii games I've seen.

He's not as bad as Kirk in RE5. He'll shoot rockets at you with no enemies around. Gotten screwed over a few times on Professional because of it. :lol

I've been slacking off alil but got a few good hours in tonight!

3-4: A few deaths failing to snipe protect Ashely. At one point with her stuck to the wall I was kinda frustrated and aimed at her head but figured wasting rare rifle bullets wasn't a good idea. Now imagine my horror when I had to PLAY as her x_x It was Sherry all over again! Torching cultists was different. "Please don't let these suits of armor come to life please don't let these suits of armor come to life please don't let these suits of armor come to fffffffuuuuuu!"

4-1: holy crap was this LONG. I got a magnum which iirc is pretty much top tier in RE-land so that's good. Lots of fighting lots of dying. Especially against fire breathng dragons! Leon & Ashley looking completely casual riding on carts was weird. Died many times against the two blind claw guys. Then bugs!! And a right hand boss type thing that nearly killed me but luckily ended up frozen and dead from rocket launcher!!

Still looks like there is so much more ahead of me yet... curse this enourmous castle!

Everyone uses the launcher on Verdugo. Everyone. :lol

And yeah the room with the two Garradors is a real pain. I make it easy by sniping the first two guys, then the duo will charge you and get stuck in the wall. 6 Magnum bullets later, room clear. Don't try running to the middle of the room or more guys will spawn.

If you've made it this far you're doing great. You're pretty much over the hump and in the clear as far as difficulty is concerned, but you still have quite a ways to go until the end. :D

The other day I started a new file and before I knew it my clock said it was 6 hours later and I was halfway through the game. This game. :lol

Man...I really wish I could play Resident Evil 4 for the first time all over again.

As far as I’m concerned it’s 100% perfect and the pinnacle of videogames! <3

The launcher was free and I needed the inventory space back badly, so badly I also sold my TMP! I used the rifle on the blind guys. After dying so many times one of them went down with just one shot. I am compelled to hoard magnum bullets o.o! Ya played for 6 hours straight? Nerves of steel!

To fight a little kid? Well you people are pros I need as much inventory and stuff in it I can get my hands on! Surely other weapons will do the job right?

Don't hoard ammo, use it! I had the problem with hoarding when I was younger but it's a habit I'm glad to have shaken. Tough enemies demand a swift kill. I use the magnum on Garradors, the Knights, the big armor guys in the third act, and sometimes even on the chainsaw guys in a pinch. If you only use it when you on the tough guys and make your shots count you shouldn't run out. Depending on the range I'll use the sniper too. During encounters with large groups I'll be switching weapons constantly to maximize damage and efficiency as the situation changes. I've gotten so good at it I often find throughout the game I find that I actually have way too much ammo and health and have to toss some.

Believe it or not I have finished this game over a dozen times and I haven't used the TMP once outside of Mercenaries. :P

To fight a little kid? Well you people are pros I need as much inventory and stuff in it I can get my hands on! Surely other weapons will do the job right?

During my first run, I used the free launcher on Verdugo, and bought two more to deal with Salazar and "It." Now I usually just sell the first launcher and do things the right way. :D

I cant really appreciate the game too much-- I bought resident evil 4 for wii-- and everyone says its suppose to be easy with the wiimote controls-- but I cant get past the first 20 minutes-- i end up getting killed the first time i get to town. and I've tried 3 times-- I have no skill when it comes to its controls.

*Shoot knees*->*run up to dude*->A/whatever the fuck for Wii because motion controls suck Kick->LEON SUPERKICK!

*run up to dude* KNIFE KNIFE KNIFE KNIFE

Move past.

Or keep running around and taking pot shots.

You're not supposed to stick to an area.

luka said:

Actually no. My first time through I had to survive his shit until the elevator arrived (don't think I need to spoiler this as it's pretty much what the game hints at). Though I do think I killed him with the nitrogen and the TMP.

I basically upgraded my attache + shotgun + sniper + TMP (if it wasn't found, forget) during my first run while using the pistol whenever to conserve ammo.

Boney said:

It's wasted on Salazar... I prefer using it on the two garradors. If I'm not mistaken you can one-shot Salazar with the broken butterfly, which is why I usually kill him with the red 9.

I usually empty the broken butterfly into Verdugo. That gun makes me sad, because I basically never see the awesome reload animation, at least until the island. I use the 6 bullets it comes with, then get the capacity upgrade to 8, use those, etc.

Protip: Usually only the capacity upgrades reload your ammunition. However, every final "exclusive" upgrade gives you a full load of ammo, even if it's not for the ammo capacity attribute.

It's insanely good on the Wii version. It's the ultimate crowd control and suppression weapon, the final answer to crossbow ganados, and the easiest weapon to combo into melee with, especially against novistadors. Also, since it's got normal chances for headshot instant kill, and the ammo boxes hold 30-50 at a time...
