LTTP: Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed

I recently picked this up for the Vita as a PS+ promotion and wow, know I now why this game has been getting tons of love in this board, great soundtrack--can't go wrong with remixed Sega classics--the original stuff is great as well. The driving is fun, but also challenging. I also like the Mario Kart series, but those games can be very easy and also kill you with the unlocking. This has the harder difficulties open from the beginning.

Additionally, there is ton of content. Just blown away by the amount of content they've added for Single Player modes. I can tell I'll be busy for a while.

Moreover, the game is just polished to heck, from the menus, to the intricate tracks. Props to Sumo Digital.

Although I'm playing the Vita version for now, I think I'll pick up a console version, because this game demands the big screen.

My only gripe is lack of 60FPS, which is my preference for racing games, but it's definitely not a deal breaker.

I can't forgive Sega for not putting "Super Sonic Racing" theme in this game, what a missed opportunity for awesomeness.
Also, the game has one of the worst soundtracks in recent years.

I may not remember very well but I think a 4th difficulty is unlockable and it was annoying to re-do all the challenges.

You sure your not just missing it? - it is in the game on Ocean View lap 2/3.

And the worst soundtrack in recent years?, this game has the best sound track of any Sega game ever made (because it takes all the best sound tracks from Sega games and puts them in this game)..

I haven't enjoyed a Kart racer as much as it since Double Dash. All of the items feel incredibly balanced and racing against the AI jus seems right. They are difficult, but almost always seem fair, probably the most important thing to nail in a game like that.

Game runs better on PC, wait for a sale. It looks much brighter on dat OLED though. $ player on PC is hella fun. Easily one of the best racing game I have ever played.

It doesn't look bad on Vita, but oh boy that framerate is terrible. I played it on PC so I couldn't downgrade to the PSV version even if free on Plus. Wipeout 2048/HD/Fury is much better, and also an arcade racer with weapons that is free on Plus. No reason to go back to Sonic.

Yeah. Not liking the frame drops once it gets busy, but as a free Vita game, can't complain much. I'll get a console version anyway. I don't have a gaming PC.

That's a shame because the PC has a ton of exclusive racers. Including Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue.

After beating the Vita version I got from PS+, I had to get the PC one. Runs like a dream and, obviously, ruins every other version. It's a very competent Vita port, but I wish they had made graphical sacrifices on consoles to keep it at 60fps...

All in all, one hell of a surprise for me and that I would have missed if PS+ hadn't threw it my way. Didn't expect a non-MK kart game to be this good, even less to be better than the original. Plus it doesn't have anything stupid like snaking...

There are a few stinkers in the soundtrack, but for every arrangement that misses the mark, I'd say there's another that completely knocks it out of the park.

To each their own, though.

This is my favourite.

The Carrier Zone track.

It just gets you PUMPED!!!.

A very (and I mean very) close 2nd is.
Burning Depths.

So many memories.

(the above links also have every other track to).

I never had a problem with the Vita version, graphics looks ok and the games run well all the time.

I'm thinking of getting the PC version down the road, to play with my nephews and to see how much better it looks.

the game looks pretty as hell, and runs really good too, I run it at 2880x1620 and there isn't a single drop of framerate =o

same goes to binary domain, sega has some really good pc ports

Good, solid game with a refreshing difficulty curve. Not sure why some people pimp it as a MK killer (haha) when they can both obviously co-exist and make each other better.

I haven't gotten to the more complicated tracks yet so maybe it changes. I felt like the framerate on the Vita version has been better than the Xbox360 version so far. PC is the way to go, but if you only have a Vita it's still worth playing.

As far as hating on the music I'm not a fan of dubstep so it took me a while to warm up to it. I mean, OutRun DUBSTEP!? After an upwards of 30 hours of gameplay I like it well enough.

I beat it on 360 up until unlocking AGES, unlocked everything on PC and now I love to pop it open on Vita from time to time. Awesome game. I wish the Mario Kart people gave it more of a chance than they did.

How's the 3DS version of this? Looked at some videos, frame rate seems a bit rough? Wouldn't mind having a portable version of this. I've got Mario Kart 7 already but I found it to be incredibly dull.

Really enjoyed the PC version.

I agree. This seems to be geared at those who want a more challenging and dedicated experience. While MK focuses on all around accessibility and easy to learn.

It still blows my mind that there's even a Burning Rangers track in the game, let alone one with such a great arrangement. I mean holy shit, they kept the lyrics and everything.

It's too bad that it's the weakest track in Transformed and godawful in the realm of kart game tracks. Way too busy.

If you absolutely need a portable version, go with the Vita version. There's some framerate hiccups here and there, but it's a solid experience overall. Avoid the 3DS version at all costs. It's a trainwreck of a port.

I actually quite like that track and think the Billy Hatcher and NiGHTS courses are far worse. Definitely could have been a bit less busy though, yeah.

I played the PS+ version on Vita, and tried the Wii U demo.

I thought both were absolutely terrible. It couldn't hold my attention for more than 5 minutes at a time. There's no explanation of the items, and the items are incredibly lame. A radio controlled car? A tornado? BEES? Didn't like the handling of the cars either, or the way cars would drag once you hit the wall. Crash or don't crash please.

The stages were gorgeous, but that's about all I had to say for it. The boat sections especially were terrible. Roll on MK8.

Got this game two days ago for Wii U, and I'm about 2 hours in so far and loving it. I'm thinking Tails will be my main for a while. The race tracks and the soundtrack are amazing. And the graphics...dat water. Just a real good game.

How's it run on iPad Air?

Do kart games usually explain to you what the items do? I don't remember they give you a tutorial in mario kart :o

edit: oh I get what you mean now, i'm drunk

I was almost the same as this.

But then, I learned to play the game.

Don't listen this guy.

I also found items were notÂ… charismatic at all.

But the bees are a wonderful replacement of the Blue Shell in Mario Kart because you can avoid them (while still losing some time in the process). I just wish they were more annoying during air section because it was too easy to evade.

I wish Mario Kart took more drastic changes to the Blue Shell.

That's a paddlin.

It's a great game on Vita. Played through it pretty much, there's still a lot left to play but it got too difficult for me at some point (at like 80% of the mirrored stages).

Still, I had more fun with it than with the last Mario Kart games I played (3DS, Wii).
It's funny a 2nd party makes more segaesque games than Sega's 1st-parties...
I hope Sumo deliver a sequel I can play on PS4.

I had it on PC, then got it on the Vita with PS+. Vita version holds up well (I prefer these pick up and play games on handhelds anyway) except those framerate drops. Granted, when shit gets crazy I don't notice as much but a lot of the times the framerate drops seem random.

The criticism of the kart handling is fair. It's not as tight-controlling as I would like, but was not a deal breaker for me.

That's because the physics are different?

But of course you should adapt to the physiics the game offers. There isn't a right way to do a kart racer. This is valid for any kart racer, be it Mario Kart, CTR, Diddy Kong Racing or this (played every one of these).

I'm only about halfway done with the "campaign mode" so I don't know for sure yet... but I'm incredibly disappointed at the complete lack of Phantasy Star. That's probably the only Sega IP I care about in the slightest. It is a pretty good kart racer though, which is the only style of racing game I can somewhat enjoy.

Mario Kart had instruction manuals.

This game has one too, but it is not thorough enough, IMHO.

One of the best and most kickass tracks in the game:

What's the original piece in this case?

I have no nostalgia for Golden Axe, so I do not know, sorry.
That piece is good though.

Never noticed any framedrops.

Only goes to show how much I don't care about framerate performance...
