Mafia 3 PC performance thread

Oh boy, there are serious issues here.

I've tried the game on PC and PS4 thus far and both suffer from very uneven frame persistence. On PS4, it looks like typical frame pacing where a single frame persists for 50ms instead of 33ms at a regular interval leading to a very uneven looking experience. This applies to the pre-rendered movies as well.

On PC, the stuttering is random and it looks even jerkier. It's just bad.

RTSS does not fix it. Anyone found a solution?

The game just doesn't move smoothly at all.

edit - Oh wait, Nvidia 1/2 refresh rate fixes the stuttering on PC enabling a stable 30fps, at least.

NICE! Tried everything except for adaptive at 1/2 the refresh rate. Really works! This was tested at 60Hz.

Ok, both my GPU and CPU reach 90-100% usage in some spots. What could be going on here, is the game that demanding?

Minute 6:38, the framerate drops to 25. This is the exact same area I'm testing. His CPU usage is at 64% since it's a much better CPU compared to mine (i5 4460 vs i7 4790k).

Could someone try this exact same part to see if the framerate drops?

Frankly, I don't even want to mess too much with the game anymore since I'm afraid I will reach the two hours and won't be able to refund.
 
Sadly I am unable to even play the game because it does not support Phenom II CPU's. My 1100t @ 4.1 should be able to handle it well but, perhaps I shall never know.

Wow again? Let me guess, it might be something to do with a build of Havok that requires a newer instruction set.
 
Adaptive (Half Refresh) did the trick for me. It's no 60, but it's pretty smooth compared to the default stutterfest.

Capping at 30 with RTSS will give you a smooth 33.3ms timing, but the adaptive half-refresh will smooth out the stuttering. One gives you consistent controls while the other gives you consistent visuals. So yes, do both!
 
Okay, this is really strange. I was having ~10 fps on high settings in 1080p on my gtx 970 and i3570k. I changed my display setup today, I used to play on a TV connected to my gfx card via and HDMI cable, now I'm playing on a monitor using DVI and I have 30fps locked on High in 1080p easily with ~70% GPU usage. Previously I had 100% usage and barely 15 fps. I'm not sure if that is what really fixed it or I just had to restart my PC, I'll do some more testing later, but that's really damn strange. If anyone else is having horrible performance, try changing the cable if possible.

This way introduces a lot of screen tearing for me.
 
So after some extensive testing last night with different settings I think i've come to the conclusion that the choice is lighting is what is giving this game it's blurry look.

P.T. had a similar image problem, with outstanding lighting. It never really had a crisp image.

There are points where the game looks gorgeous with this lighting, and other areas where it really suffers. I don't think there's going to be a patch to fix it though. I think we're going to have to live with it. Seems like an artistic choice. Could be wrong though.

I've always done that if I need it at 30fps BUT I've always wondered if the frame rate limiter in inspector is ever worth using. Anyone know? I use RTSS to steady it out but I've never used that on top of RTSS.

PLEASE report back. I had 3 subscribers report something very similar yesterday but without reboots and each of them separate seemed like isolated cases
 
I don't get the complaints about the visuals, it looks fine to me. The great lighting makes up for the occasional poor texture or odd looking character model.

Same set up but 4.4ghz and 16gb ram and I can play at 1080p all high settings at 30fps.

I had the same problem but fixed it by downloading nvidia inspector.
And setting vsync to "1/2 refresh rate" in nvidia inspector, it now should say custom vsync in nvida control panel under the mafia 3 profile.
I also run Riva Tuner Statistics Server locked at 30fps
 
I'm glad that I didn't preorder it but at the same time sad because I wanted it to be good. Let's hope that the game finds its footing with a couple of patches.

Just use reshade to sharpen the game.

Msaa would literally cut performance in half and still not get as clean an image.

Plus you'd have morons throwing a fit about having the option at all. Just look at deus ex. After the idiocy we saw with that game and its msaa option I doubt we ever fucking see it again out of an aaa game.
 
The game is so weird.

At times it looks beautiful, and at other times it's a blurry mess.
 
If someone somewhere on earth can mod the game, and can ever install HD textures and optimize the game, i would give you at least $150 dollars....

This is beyond ridiculous, great gunplay, music, and characters and they shit right on us pc players. No rain effect on hoods, trees glow with sun at top, Morris are ridiculous, the graphics are the worst have seen in a long time and the AI is abysmal... PC need a lot of help and quickly...

I am furious the day of release its discovered and they then sent out statement.. You can't make this up, but then again paid Youtubers said the game was beautiful and gorgeous
 
If anyone is having issues hitting a stable 30 FPS at 4k I recommend setting reflections to low. On my 980 TI any setting other than low would just spike my GPU usage up, even in scenes with minimal reflections. I'm assuming their reflection resolution scales with the rendering resolution.

Sadly there is definitely a noticeable loss in quality in certain areas, but it was the only way for me to keep a stable 30 at 4k.

This is absurd. I'm not going to sit here and defend all the nefarious ploys publishers use to extract revenue from their customers, but I will definitely argue with your statement that games aren't made with love and passion.

I thought about arguing how games like Hyper Light Drifter, The Witness, Abzu, and other "indie" games are clearly made with love and passion - but that argument seems obvious. Instead, I'll happily defend AAA projects as being made with love and passion.

Have you ever worked at a job you didn't love? Maybe you washed dishes, or delivered papers, or worked at a fast food restaurant. Maybe you even had a great job working for a huge corporation that didn't seem to notice if you exist or not. Tell me you've never taken pride in your work, despite not loving the overall job or final product.

Games, and AAA games especially, are made by teams of potentially hundreds of people and several producers. Most of these people are undoubtedly passionate about their game being the best it can, but big teams are hard to manage and sometimes the final product doesn't execute due to creative differences or practical sacrifices that have to be made.

By arguing that games aren't made with love and passion, you're really insulting developers everywhere.

I can run it at 4K and get about 25FPS, I know for an absolute fact I could do 1080p 30 with like 4xMSAA and it wouldn't look like utter shit with the current TXAA.

But, for the time being, do you have a link to these reshades? I've heard them mentioned so far but never seen any for this game yet.

That recent Amy Hennig thread about AAA gaming "not worth it" is still fresh on my mind and I realized I never noticed people talking about PC ports in that thread.
 
Another graphic/display problem with the game is weird bright lines flashing down the left and right vertical edges of the display particularly at resolutions at 1440p and 4K. Added to the UI not scaling it suggests the game was not designed to be played at higher than 1080p.

1. No you likely couldn't. Look at DXMD benches using the game's temporal solution vs MSAA. 4xMSAA is like a 45FPS perf drop vs TAA. This has been a reality since games moved to differed rendering, the first time I remember it being a snafu that caused bitching was Max Payne 3, which saw similar performance pains from MSAA.

Use mediator for a simple GUI. You can just drag and drop the files if you want to though. Lumasharpen is under sweetfx configuration files.

I can confirm that with my GTX 970 connected via dvi I have no real issues maxing the game out and staying at 30fps with no major issues. I've not tried HDMI but it's connected to my tv. I'll try it out later.

I've already found a reshade that works for me on TheLazy, but thanks. Also, I've never ever played a game where MSAA has that much of an impact. On GTA 5 I have about a 10-15FPS difference between no AA and 4xMSAA. I would absolutely rather take a small performance hit than have the horrible regression that is TAA/TXAA.

Even if they just add the ability to turn the AA off so that running it at 4K alone serves as a form of real AA then I'd be happy. The ghosting it currently has is insane, rain during the day looks like it's frozen in the sky half the time.

It mostly depends on how wide the coverage is with MSAA. If they apply it to shadows that's what usually annihilates performance.

I agree that it should be optional, though. If you can downsample to infinity and beyond why not just let people use that?

This and the fact that 4xMSAA in that game while in the city is not at all reflective of the performance impact you see while being in forested areas. Around heavy foliage it tanks.

Exactly. Thanks to this Reshade and downsampling I finally have it looking quite decent even with the AA on.

The saturation looks better than the base game but I'm not sure if it's TOO much. Either way I think it looks pretty great:

Just fyi but you can probably get rid of the artifacts by turning the sharpening down from whatever the preset is set at to around .50

ITS A PORTAL TO ANOTHER DIMENSION!

The game is pretty barren and feels very still... kinda sad about it. I think Scarface on the 360 had a better world and gameplay.

I do like Lincoln character, and the cutscenes and story are pretty awesome. Gameplay feels good, and melee combat is pretty brutal. But the AI is just painfully dumb and offers very little resistance.

Also, the game can look very nice in some areas, but most of the time it certainly does look like a ps2 game. Game is in dire need of perhaps another year of development time?

Stil, with all its flaws i've been entertained by it. we'll see if i get to finish it. Waiting for the patch to see what it does to the game.

I'm running it at 4k, highest settings. only way the game looks kinda ok.

I might take a look into it but I'm actually happy with the sharpening. Maybe it's just a novelty right now because of how blurry the original game looked lol.
