Mafia 3 PC performance thread

Wow so the PC 30 fps lock is true and durante bat signal failed?

This is probably my most anticipated game for the rest of the year, so I am still buying (Best Buy discounts PC physical copy) but thats a shock for me given how good the prior games were on PC.

It is getting a patch this weekend.

Why is it so hard for developers to code a proper PC version? Lack of skill? Don't think so looking at Mafia 1 and 2, especially the first one coming from PC as a main platform. Lack of desire? Don't they learn from others' mistakes like Batman: Arkham Knight and other poor PC ports? Don't they know that the community gets really pissed and is punishing things like that with excessive bad reviews like they do now with Mafia 3, like they did with NMS, like they did with Batman, like every game that's utter code garbage? Don't they know it's actually pretty easy to get the community on their side? Haven't they heard from the developers called CDPR?

I don't get it. At all.

Does anyone know if the blurriness can be fixed by downsampling from 4k? It seems like NMS had the same exact issue.

Blurriness is greatly reduced by reducing AA from High, which is TXAA that looks severe. There is still a hazy muddy quality to the game due to its filters. Either use reshade sharpening or downscale

Anyone else find the frame pacing to be pretty terrible?

I move the camera around from left to right, and it stutters and jitters like crazy.

It isn't TXAA. All the settings are TAA but applied at different degrees of severity.

Yeah that definitely looks like some form of TXAA. It's so blurry at the higher settings, I just turned it to low and used the Reshade for SMAA. And sharpening. It looks better now, still not great at 1440p but having a wonderful time.

We need this patch!

Yep its not good. I can see whats next also, 60fps gets added over the w/e but then people will complain its not a locked 60 lol.. Myself included.

Sorry if this was already mentioned, I admit I did not read the whole thread - but I checked the OP.

JaseC - this may be useful for tips and tricks is someone is desperate/peasant enough ;) to play in 30fps:

The built in 30fps lock results in stuttering and bad frame pacing (frametime not stable 33.33ms). For some unfathomable reason devs cannot correctly lock to 30fps for shit (not that they ever should) - this fact was mentioned by digital foundry at some point. The only recent game that lock to 30fps properly is Forza Horizon 3.

But there is a way to eliminate stuttering and have stable frametime of 33.33ms. Two things need to be done:
1) Setting 30fps lock via Riva Tuner Statistics Server

2) Setting vsync to "1/2 refresh rate" in nvidia control panel or nvidia inspector.

These two things combine result in proper 30fps with stable frametimes, proper framepacing and no stutter (although I did not test it extensively, it seems better than the build in 30fps lock, definitely not worse).

Using RTSS to impose a 30fps cap is actually supposed to be in the OP (it's in all of the others). Oops! As I understand it, though, half-refresh rate vsync isn't required.

Almost every game problem can be solved by spending more time (and thus money). Unwillingness to miss deadline (and the fall sales) is probably why 2k decided to release the game anyway.
There's nothing the dev can do about that

The Witcher 3 ran like shit for like 6 month on console and had plenty of bugs on all platforms. Not unexpected for an ambitious game by pc centric dev but it's was hardly a smooth launch for them either.

Yeah this being Hangar 13's first game I have a feeling it was a combination of 2K telling them the game was releasing Oct 7th and they not having much pull to change that and the fact that they didn't want to miss a deadline on their first major game. The fact that they apparently have a patch that could go live any minute to address the 30fps lock seems to me that they knew a while ago things weren't going well and they set themselves a minimum to meet by launch and were working on fixes on the side to maybe make it before launch or at least shortly after if necessary.

You don't want to be given the keys to a somewhat well known and acclaimed AAA series and a brand spanking new AAA development team and miss your deadlines on your first game. Then again you also don't want to create a major PR flub on your first game.

People have such a weird memory of The Witcher 3 too. The game was literally unplayable for a fair few people for many weeks and performance was pretty variable. On PC at least, don't know about consoles, there was a main quest that would go into an infinite loading loop that wasn't addressed for like 3 patches. I had to wait two weeks before I could play the game again. I've never had that happen to me in any game before. I've experienced plenty of bugs, glitches and CTDs but there was always a way to get around it. Not with TW3, love the game tremendously though.

Did they really confirm a patch is coming this weekend to fix these problems? If so then I'll buy the game.

they said they had a patch they were working on internally that had fixes but they had to test it more and verify it...all they said was they are wanting to put it up this weekend...this is assuming nothing screws up in the testing and pushes things back

Fuck 30 fps and I don't want no 60 fps patch either. They better unlock the framerate.
This shit plays awful on a GTX 1080 with a gsync monitor. And yeah it looks blurry and there are several bugs with the shadows/lighting.

...

says right in their update last night the patch will have 30, 60, and Unlocked options

Apparently my specific version of the game is only five minutes long. As it seems to have an unfitting ending before it really began (repeated crashes in cut-scene)

I managed to skip the troublesome cut-scene, only to find that i got to play this...

Who wouda thunk. I hope they are releasing one meaty patch.

GOTY.

People weren't kidding about it being blurry. And 30fps feels really sluggish in this game as well.
Tried to run it at 2880x1620 but the HUD and text is so small it hurst my eyes trying to read it.
Wrote about it in the comments of their patch announcement and came across this there:

I love it how people get so butt hurt when the devs release something with 30 frame locks. Like what the fuck. 30 frames is nowhere near bad. Its better than looking at a monitor with a game running at 300+ frames because that will literally kill your eyes when you get older. Human eyes can only see 60 frames anyway. Stop being greedy and deal with the 30 frames.

Reminds me of this

On PC? You can increase it :)

Technical issues aside, the game is fantastic imo

Yup - shame the tech stuff is overshadowing it because I'm having a blast.

And, as far as PC ports go, it's not a dumpster fire like Arkham Knight or a warm pile of garbage like FH3. It's serviceable. If it weren't for the 30FPS lock, it would be seen as a technically competent game with a little bit of jank that will (hopefully) get ironed out in patches.

Game looks stunning at times and mediocre at others. Inconsistent visually but great underlying mechanics (shooting and driving are excellent). Mission design has been on point so far but I've only just gotten into the actual open world bits (5 hours in).

Christ I just got flooded with folks who now can't load the PC version. Went and checked and yep...now crashes on load...christ.

Game looks dang good on my PC. 1080, i5 4690k, 16G ram.

The 30fps is unpleasant at first but you get used to it - and there's a fix on the way anyway.

Did it update or something?

It doesn't look like it. It looks like this issue existed since it went live for everyone else but is creeping up on peeps. I can't tell if its timing wise, or how people exit the game or what. Still tying to find out.

I agree, especially during story mission with set weather and lighting.

But the open world (free roam) sections can look terrible. Still, all technical issues aside the story and voice acting is just great. I really hope the upcoming patch is going to fix some stuff, the game sure deserves it.

I'm definitely getting the weird hyperspeed weather and occasionally blown out lighting, but I gotta say, I'm surprised some people don't like the animations. Those have been the highlight for me so far, lots of great combat animation stuff in my opinion.

30fps really is a killer, though. It feels pretty sluggish.

I have a feeling this will be £15 by the time it's fixed which is when I'll buy it, I just bought Mafia II from the BST thread and I'll play through that instead while they fix III.

My concern is that at max settings at 1440p on a 980, I'm using 80% of my GPU resources. Zero chance I can get 60FPS with that.

Looks like you'll need at least a 1080 to get those frames at that res and 60FPS at 4K is definitely off the cards for any GPU.

Yeah, I really wonder what GPU you need for 60fps in this game.

Guess we'll see in a day or two. I can play it at 30fps, 30fps via RTSS, ingame vsync off and half refresh rate in the Nvidia panel and it feels like a console game at 30fps, not bad at all.

Yeah the animations are great, they really impressed me in combat.

As expected, I'm getting locked 30 FPS with everything maxed on a 1080/6700 combo... But I had to stop playing because the framerate was killing me. I'll wait until the patch hits Steam this weekend (hopefully) before even finishing the prologue mission.

Quickly tried it out just now. Doesn't look all that bad (only played the first mission though), but yeah, 30fps on a 100hz is just a big no no. Luckily I have to work tomorrow, so I hope by the time I get home the new patch will be released.

Frame pacing is real solid - they should be commended for that at least.

But yeah, 85% GPU utilization on a 980 at 1440p in the open world means A LOT of people are going to be very disappointed when they can't run this at 60FPS on the weekend. I doubt a 970 will manage that even at 1080.

My 4790/980ti combo could not get a goddamn stable 30fps at 1440p using mostly high settings. Considering how unremarkable this game looks, that's quite a statement.

Just wow. Thank god for Steam refunds.

Is everyone just assuming there will be no further optimisations in the patch along with the frame rate unlock ?

Combat animations do look good, but the facial animations are a bit over the top at times. Lips moving way too much, imo.
