Mafia 3 PC performance thread

How many bad PC ports have there been in 2016?

In the last 3 months I have played:

- No Man's Sky
- Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
- Forza Horizon 3

All 3 had some pretty serious issues performance wise on a high-end machine.

2016 has indeed been awful, and that was only the last 3 months!

after patch 60fps is nice and smooth for me now, should have been this way day one.

the game still has the bug where it resets or forgets your AA setting. mine is set to low but keeps resetting to high every time i launch :/ also boats dont have any rumble with a pad when you hit something, another bug sigh...

Is the game capped at 58fps? Can't seem to get it higher than that. I get pretty wild fluctuation when driving, anywhere from 48-58fps and on the ground it's a lot more consistent 55-58fps. The combat shines at higher framerates, it feels good to use Kb/m to shoot with precision. The combat feels brand new with better control for me.

I'm enjoying myself - it's going to need some major tweaking but I'm glad they got this out quickly. I'm actually kind of curious to see the DF analysis and breakdown.

What settings are y'all using for 60fps?

"we need to port this game from consoles"

"do we optimize it?"

"nah, i'm sure everyone has 1080s let's just make that the recommended"

Even TWO 1080s can't get 60fps locked, that's over £1200 in GPU grunt. If this wasn't a complete shit house of a port you'd expect a 970 to have no problem hitting 60fps locked at 1080p. It's amazing how we got two complete polar opposite ports in the same week (Mafia being awful and Gears being incredible).

So that's 3 games out of how many total?

To be fair, there's no SLI support at this stage.

TWO or THREE is the same...SLi is not supported in this "game"

Finally got around to watching this gem

I wish I could rent a PC game just to laugh with all these glitches. Some of these had me rolling.

It's sad. This game seems just fine story wise, interesting art direction, all that. But on a technical level it is just terrible.

So haven't played the game at all yet, from the past few pages I'm seeing the update is live for 60fps but I'm not going to be reaching 1440p 60fps with a 1080 is that correct?

2016 is a bad year for PC games? Let me list some good PC versions.

Dragon's Dogma
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Far Cry Primal
The Division
Dark Souls 3
Overwatch
Doom
Mirror's Edge
ABZU
The Turing Test
ReCore
Gears of War 4
Batlefield 1 beta ran like a dream

That's how many compared to three poorly running games?

-Quantum Break wasn't a bad port. It's the real time global illumination that kills the performance. The game runs at 720p30 on Xbox One ffs.

-Mafia 3 is a mess on every platform. It's their shitass engine.

-No Man's S--lmao

-Forza Horizon 3 is the only actual subpar PC port.

Which is bad in itself, to be fair.

Sure. I was just clarifying that two 1080s being unable to maintain 60fps isn't due to the game demanding too much of them.

40-odd is achievable when using the High preset. Dropping some settings may get you there (reflection quality seems to be the biggest performance killer).

Uh from what I understand TAA doesn't work with SLI due to the way the frame blending works, right? Same reason why DXMD didn't have it.

Considering something like only 2% of steam users employ SLI that's hardly a bad tradeoff when it comes to the developers making an engine choice. SLI's always been a pretty shit deal anyways, tbqh.

People's issues (from what I can gather) are how the games LAUNCH, not how they finish. Most PC ports gets fixed eventually, but if other people are like me, the initial shine wears off when you get fed that shitty launch sandwich, then I just move onto other games. Let's hone this down to AAA ports. Take Overwatch off of that list - that was a PC game ported to consoles.

So, games that sucked at launch for most users:

The Division (just check the PC performance thread)

Deus EX

No Man's Sky (lmao all you want - it sucked at launch for PC)

Forza Horizon 3

Mafia 3 (is a joke for a PC game - fps limit was for the birds and that's the least of its problems on PC)

Quantum Break - (http://www.gamespot.com/articles/quantum-break-on-pc-cant-run-at-60-fps-doesnt-have/1100-6438677/)

Can I add something?
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Mad Max
ArmA III: Apex
Total War: Warhammer
God Eater and Dead Rising

Unfortunately it seems that after Arkham Knight something broke on the mind of the community. Everything is broken, everything is unfunctional (I don't even know if this word exist) and all the releases deserves bad reviews cuz reasons
Honestly I'm a bit tired of this situation
And I agree that Mafia III is a joke but damn, not that everything sucks because of it

If I request a refund on steam can I buy it later again cheap?

Game looks and runs like garbage, even though the core gameplay itself might be quite fun. Want to refund and just buy in a steam sale at this point. Hugely disappointed in this game.

You can do that.

Further to this, Valve even explicitly says it's not considered abuse to refund a game solely to take advantage of a sale:

Abuse
Refunds are designed to remove the risk from purchasing titles on Steam—not as a way to get free games. If it appears to us that you are abusing refunds, we may stop offering them to you. We do not consider it abuse to request a refund on a title that was purchased just before a sale and then immediately rebuying that title for the sale price.

This game seems to be a textbook example of like devs just saying "yes" to every effect on the planet no matter the sense it makes. Some people like to defend bullshit like CA and whatnot as some perfect artistic choice but I think it's clear a huge number of developers don't neccessarily know what they are doing with all their tools.

What the fuck is that sky box lol. Looks like the apocalypse is going down.

and believe it or not that max settings

no idea what they were thinking with this game

one good thing about the new patch is that the stuttering is gone from 30fps when you set the frame rate to unlimited

Anyone else getting a bug where they can't use explosives or open up the explosives wheel? I'm using an Xbox One controller and tested the buttons in Windows 10 configuration. Everything works.

Doesn't seem to work with the keyboard mapped buttons either.

Game is running really well for me post patch. I'm on an AMD RX470 fwiw. Sucks that it seems super inconsistent for people though.

What do you consider running really well though? For me it would be 60fps minimum, if you're getting that then yeah I'd be very happy with that.

Just like with the mod, ever since unlocking the framerate I'm getting nothing but crashes every 20 mins or so.

Hope they work on it some more, but for now I'm just going to lock it to 30 and call it good.

You just listed so many games that were never console titles. What are you talking about. A lot of big PC ports didn't launch well. There is no need to apologize for the GIGANTIC companies that are putting this stuff out. Also - Arma??? Is that really the thing that you want on your poster for PC performance. It's annoying, and it's OK for people to be annoyed about it. The whole reason that we have PC performance threads is because, most of the time, things aren't all roses.

EDIT: Not "so many console titles" but two was enough for me to spot someone changing the target of this aspect of the discussion.

Really wish I've gotten Gears of War 4 instead of this shit... the file size and windows store turned me off but damn I have no desire to play this any longer. Will test the patch but not expecting much and the state on how they launched the game already soured me on the experience.

Which preset did you download? That actually doesn't look shitty.

Removing the blur is achieved by sharpening the image. There's a preset in the OP that does just that and doesn't fiddle with the colour correction; you can adjust the sharpening to your liking if the preset's default seems off.

Has this been posted yet?

A few GPUs that interest me:

Wow, 750 Ti averaging at 13 fps :(.

Gtx 770 average is 22.

You need to have 970 for a 30 fps average, fuck this.

So many extremely powerful cards are at PS4 level at best.

Those "very good, but not too expensive" cards from last few years are dead here.

The biggest problem I see is this Is only 1080p. What a mess.

I'm running the entire game on all low settings, I get a consistent 60fps and I'm enjoying the game. The game stopped crashing on me as well with a 60fps cap

I've got mine set to strength @ .94, clamp @ .059, and pattern @ 3 for results like the image above.

Devs have got to start following id's example and start including a sharpening slider when they use a temporal solution for AA. It helps the look tremendously.

Those results are on the high preset though, which judging by the ot ("jaggies everywhere wth") high preset is definitely not PS4 level. Turning reflections down alone will help out a 750ti and the like immensely.

The fuck is with PC ports lately?

NVIDIA are optimising a ton less and putting pressure on devs to put in expensive features to make you jump to 10XX generation. Nothing else really.

Jumping to a 1440p monitor with a 970 was such a shady decision on my part tbh

There's also barely any difference between low and high presets.

It's like the game is basically running on a PS4/XB1 emulator.

Using the newest version of that reshade mod, with everything maxed except liquid and volumetric effects on low at 1440p resolution. I am getting 65-75 fps on average with a 1070. Have not dropped a frame below 60 yet.

Also don't use the locked 60 fps setting, for some reason it's running 58 fps... just go with unlocked framerate.

This game is a mess.

i5 4670
GTX 1080
16 GB
SSD
W10

At the start, fps stays between 70-100. 1080P + all configurations set to high or ON (except Vsync).

But as soon as you start to drive the truck and reach town, fps sinks hard. It goes to 30-40 and stays there. And it doesn't matter if you set every single configuration to low and off, the fps won't change.

My guess - the engine + poor use of the cpu.

There is something extremely wrong with the lighting in this game. It's not ugly it looms bugged. It's as if the layer of light that hits surfaces has the brightness turned up to 11. Chrome surfaces look white, the sea at night is completely white and overall everything looks like it's cell shaded but in white instead.

It's very CPU heavy. The most CPU bound game I've seen in a while.

It pings my threads of a 6700k @4.3 in the 70-80 range. So while I have the rest of the same gear as you, I have a 10-20ish FPS lead on you at 1440p. So yeah CPU makes a huge difference in this game.

Edit to prevent confusion: Meant while driving, my moment to moment FPS isn't super high, but it doesn't plunge below 50ish while driving.
