Major Nelson addresses the Xbox One issues

Maybe the game sharing won't be so bad. I mean if you have 10 people and each spend 120 dollars on 2 different games, you potentially have 24 games, right?

That interviewer was terrible. Nodding her head like a muppet after everything he said and actually agreeing with his PR-speak with reinforcements like "good point" after everything he said.

Microsoft has their hooks in Reddit, right? They haven't seemed independent in this at all. Nuking threads about the no DRM hashtag campaign was weird. This is worse.

You're not wrong about the interviewer, did a terrible job of probing for more detailed answers.

Major Nelson* is what's wrong with the video game industry. An old asshole that hardly plays games trying to tell us what we want.

* You can pretty much replace Major Nelson with any exec at Microsoft in that sentence.

That probably applies well to many executives; I don't think it applies to Larry. He seems to actually game as a hobby. Of course, I may be an 'old asshole', too, so maybe its just a difference in our perspectives.

I like Major Nelson, I like the new Xbox (I like the new PS4, too). But it seems like he's talking around the questions. He seems to be trying to spin damage control; I don't envy his position.

I couldn't help but notice the lack of personal space in that interview, it was like they were cuddling to whisper about Xbox One.

I losing respect for the guy, can you answer far more properly?

He not better than other xbone representative.

Related question the the last... What is the additional value bought by the once every 24 hrs connection, what do I as a consumer get out of that
"I think I kind of just went over that, right? There are so many. If you give me a game, the system will automatically appear in my library, as well as having the most up to date library when my Dad or my Mom buys a game."

What is one question you were not asked, but wish you would have been asked about the Xbox One?
"Probably about the family package. We've talked a little bit about it, but people have not really got their heads around about what it means. You kind of already asked me, so I don't really have an answer to that question. It's awesome!"
6 year old can fool me better.

I find it very interesting he's saying the system has been built with maximum flexibility in mind, yet we get some of the most ridgit and restrictive measures put upon us that we have ever seen in this hobby. :-/
From their perspective he's absolutely right. If you take the phone homes as a given, MS has a ton of flexibility when it comes to all other knobs and sliders they can manipulate when it comes to how open or restrictive the DRM and sharing can be. Take away the mandatory 24 hour phone home and there are far, far, fewer scenarios that work to protect customer rights and content producers. Those scenarios exist, but MS would be trapped into them long term.

I can feel where they're coming from, but you're also absolutely right - its still way too restrictive. MS is still trapped in their bubble.

Geoff: Majority of the world is connected? Africa is large, you mean a majority of it is connected? Have you seen the chart btw?
I'm sure he meant a large part of the world where Xbox One's are actually sold.

That is very much an Xbox problem.
How is Microsoft responsible for Netflix not being available in certain countries??

He is talking about the types of distribution they can support is flexible.
Like imagine digitally renting games...

So if your account gets banned (in which you violate the TOS) you lose the licence for the game. However Major Nelson states you can still play your games. Wat?

Multiplayer TOS. The Banning of your account on Xbox live multiplayer now just regulates your account to a single player. Pretty much the same as 360 now. Does anyone who have a banned xbox live account tell me what happens to netflix and any other Xbox live gold apps?

Exactly and that comment about Sony not wanting to answer questions to make it sounds like they are hiding something, seems like Reddit is run by MS fanboys.

Here are the top15 Questions for Sony from reddit ordered by upvotes - link
  • Will there be PS4 and Vita bundle?
  • Will the PS4 support mouse and keyboard?
  • With the PS4 functioning as a powerful Media Hub (besides pure gaming), which video formats does it support, and will we be able to plug in any Data device or will it only accept a FAT32 format?
  • I'd love to hear more about how Sony plan to use Gaikai. Will backwards compatibility to PS1/2/3 be possible through streaming?
  • Will you be able to change your PSN name?
  • Is the PS4 likely to have support for the Oculus Rift?
  • With the new Livestreaming feature, will the stream output only contain the Gameplay or will it be customizable to make it more personal.
  • -Will PS4 to Vita remote play functionality work while playing online multiplayer on the PS4?
-Will the PS4 still require double the memory of a game to install it like it does on the PS3?
-Will trophies instantly sync on PS4 like achievements do on Xbox 360?
-What will be the new friends list limit (if any)?
  • With the PS4 moving towards a more PC based infrastructure and the possibility for Indie developers to self publish, what are the odds of Sony and Developers allowing User generated content, or Modding, on the platform?
  • How will drive club PS+ edition be different from the full retail edition.
  • What is the maximum number of people you can have in a cross-game chat?
  • Will the ownership of games you own digitally on PS3 transfer to PS4 if they are made backwards compatible later in the circle?
  • How is PS+ going to change on Playstation 4 other than adding the ability to play multiplayer?
As in, will we still get 4-5 games on the instant game collection a month?
Ask about any details for the new playstation app.
Do they have any more details about how streaming PS3 games will work? Will we have to pay for any games we already own on PS3 again?
  • How many people can you have in a cross-game chat at one time?
Can we get more details on how the PS4's game recording technology works? We know the Xbox One has built in TwitchTV functionality; is the PS4's implementation similar to that?
  • Can you guarantee that PS+ will still retain all current benefits once it becomes necessary have a subscription to play online multiplayer?

A lot of these things sound like they would be subject to change. It would turn into an interview where you just say "we can't comment on that at the moment". Maybe they should tweet Adam Boyes or Yoshida to see if they can find out the answers to some of those things.

The line between single player and multiplayer is a clear one right now.

Not really so clear moving forward. TitanFall has a campaign but its multiplayer only. What about the Division, Dead Rising 3 and WatchDogs? What about Forza 5's drivatars? What about the cloud?

But she has nice nudes so I don't care.

Also that interview was basically answering nothing.

I'm way beyond the point of taking anything Microsoft says seriously. I have this deep rooted thing going on in the back of my head, "Yeah but what's the catch" and "Probably some PR interpretation of a shitty deal". It's pretty bad.

Not the best 'interviewer' in the traditional sense of the word. What do we call an 'agreeable reader of questions'? Is their a title for such a person?

Whatever you call her, and however much Larry is full of crap, I love her hair and want to have her babies, lol

So many dodged/'misunderstood' answers to the questions, lol.

It seem like he's appearing to misunderstand on purpose. A lot of his answers in other interviews or twitter replies seem to go over his head, but I think it was his aim to seem oblivious to how off his answer is. On twitter it works perfectly. You can't read facial expressions, you can't detect sarcasm, and you can't read bluffs in text. Sometimes you can use the limited amount of characters as an excuse when sounding stupid.

Major Nelson is pretty good but he has to avoid most of these questions. He has to avoid them because the real, genuine to answer to several of them is 'Fuck you' and he can't really do that as a PR person.

"Why is it that someone with a physical disc of a game inserted into the console could not play that game offline for more than 24 hours?
"That is an interesting question and pretty complex. The way we designed the Xbox One architecture is for flexibility, and one of the areas we can do that is, for instance, our family sharing. If you and I were in a family, you could check a game out of our game library and use it. So this ability we got of seeing what you got in your library, that is a result of being always connected. We think the upside of being connected is about the library and having access to your games anywhere you are."

This is the most damning. They could easily implement a system where, when you try to play a game Xbone checks the license online. If it can't connect the system could give you a prompt like "No connection to Microsoft servers. To continue playing please insert game disc". It would be that easy, but the true reason for the 24hr check is to force used game sales through "appropriate channels", so they won't implement it.

Ah good to know. I always import PEGI versions from them. If MS blocks imports I'm sure a lot of people will get pissed. (DeadRising 3 probably won't release here)

What the heck is going on with those "Well there's still the 360" excuse?
Ok, MS, if the 360 is still so awesome than why should I buy a XB1?

They are simply positioning x1 as a home device. Not an old school game machine. What they really want to say is why don't you just play on your mobile phone or tablet when you travel like the rest of society ;)...

it is being positioned as the gaming equivalent of a cable box.

Also good to hear that the bullshit of losing your games if banned... Is bullshit

What's going on here? The Xbox One isn't as bad as everybody say it is?
You can play single player games even when banned?
And the Xbox One is built for the future and is made to be flexible?

Can we please stop posting the garbage the idiots at #Xboxsupport say.

Yes, it's been debunked already.

I and three other people on GAF have phoned Xbox Support and they've said straight out this won't be the case. No IP block.

They don't support grey imports and never have but have no intention to stop it.

I think these questions are now present for both consoles as cloud enhanced gaming moves froward. No matter if they are DRM or online checks.

So no more importing a Japanese system to play all the Cave shooters on since I live in Europe?
WTF! I truly hope they and just about every Japanese company only develops for the PS3 and Wii U now. Even if it sucks having to buy a Japanese 3DS or Wii U to play certain games, at least I have that option.
This thing keeps on getting worse as time goes by.

Will you change anything about the Xbox One after seeing the Sony conference?
"I don't really think we're going to change anything. We're very happy with what we've done with Xbox One. Did you see the games at our briefing? Did you see the exclusives? We're really, really proud of the system and the games coming out. I think it is safe to say we are confident where we are going, and we're confident gamers are going to love our vision of the future, and what we're going to offer for gaming."

Just like i thought, there doing nothing about it. More reason for me to buy a PS4. And no i do not love your vision of the 'cloud' future and DRM.

Oh the Xbox One will have a rough road for about 2 years. Even if everything is understood and clear, there will be FUD for many years.

The xbox support twitter has no idea what they're talking about ever. There is a lot of confusion in general and that shit doesn't help.
