Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

I saw a few eBay sales where people would sell 2 pro controllers for $30. Anyone but from those? It seems like too good to be true.

How disappointing. Looks like that awesome galleon kart is slow.

Something tells me that ultrashortcuts and track glitches will be way less common in this game compared to Mario Kart Wii and 7.
Yes, people will find them eventually (since apparently they don't have anything else to do) but this new system where Lakitu picks you up almost immediatly right after you fall off or get stuck somwhere is pretty telling.

These people are terrible playing Mario Kart 8 but thanks to that, I noticed Lakitu won't let you go too far from the track/path you're supposed to race on when he's already on screen.
Heck, even if you go backwards for a few seconds, Lakitu will be like.. "lol you idiot, let me help you" and then you're back on track in the right direction.

Watch the NicoNico video @44:08

I don't know, it's an idea that crossed my mind. Could be wrong.

Edit: Plus, we have post release patches so that's even better.

A friend has been attempting to translate some of the vehicle names, and apparently... the pink kart with the speakers on the back of it that we've been seeing somewhat frequently is called the Beat Demon. Best name ever.

There not going to go with one:one translations. The carts will get a different name in each region.

What's the consensus here on "baby" characters?

I always find myself annoyed by them. Especially when I see dupes in the same races in MKWii, e.g. Mario, Baby Mario, Peach, and Baby Peach all jockeying for position on the same screen in the same race. Just seems... lame.

And now we have the potential for THREE Marios to be in the same race (presumably has already happened in MK7). And wouldn't be surprised if something like Cat Mario eventually made it in as a hidden or DLC character. It IS called "Mario Kart", but I think the day we see four Marios racing against eachother in a grand prix race may be the day the shark has been jumped, lol.

Is it not sorta dumb to allow various clones of the same characters to be in the same races?

I was never a fan of the baby characters myself.

Baby Mario and Baby Luigi were alright for Double Dash.

Baby Peach was stretching it, but she appeared in Mario and Luigi first so at least she was a pre-existing character. Baby Daisy is just pushing it to ridiculous levels.

I'm surprised they haven't used Baby Wario or Baby DK from YIDS yet. Or, hell, Baby Yoshi. That's actually be funny.

I liked baby Mario/baby Luigi in Double Dash because you could team them up with Yoshi kind've a cool nod to Mario World 2.

The baby princessess felt gratuitous though, and hopefully they don't through in anymore.

Personally I'd like to see them removed altogether, but I'm sure at this point that it won't happen. Mainly what I'd like to see is a max of one of each character per race. The other day I blew it at the end and finished fifth in a MKWii grand prix race. The four characters ahead of me were two Luigis and two Daisies. Doh.

I don't think it's unreasonable to say they should limit it to one per race... I'd rather be up against DK, a koopaling, and Mario than Metal Mario, Baby Mario, and Mario...

Really, the game is called "Mario Kart" so we should actually ONLY have mario. og Mario, Metal Mario, Baby Mario, Tanooki Mario, Cat Mario, Penguin Mario, Baby Metal Mario, Kitten Mario, Wildebeest Mario, and Capybara Mario. DO it Nintendo.

I completely lost it at Capybara Mario

Really hope that isn't implemented in Time Trial.

Now what is automatic drifting?
In MKWii, you could choose Auto or Manual drifting. Manual is how it's always been done (jump while doing a curve and moving side to side to do a drift boost). Auto means the whole drift is done on its own while turning normally, but you won't get the drift boost and you can't jump either.

Just to add to this, when you are turning in auto, you do not lose any speed. When you are in manual drift you lose speed if you do very slight regular turns (holding analog left or right 1/4-3/4th the way). In auto you sacrifice the mini boosts for consistent speed while turning regularly.

Since manual players constantly jump to drift to get the boosts, they don't feel this slight losing of speed, but sometimes doing this to get boosts all the time, they have to alter their racing line on turns/curves to something less optimal and the boosts make up the that lost.

With auto, i noticed if you drive with optimal lines to curves you can make up the lost of mini boost and have consistant speed, especially if you choose a high top speed kart. I was able to get 9999 pt ranking online on mkwii using exclusively auto with a heavy top speed kart, driving it like a sim lol.

Of course the inward/sharp cornering bikes ruined that balance being able to get that optimal line WITH the boost. But when i was playing online items left openings to change their racing line, plus with my heavy kart, bullying them by ramming them slightly helped me get thru a lot of the bike fest races.

Now if MK8 keeps auto mode WITH the boosts.. . imma be a happy camper, because there were times i just couldn't catch someone who is 1st because the course allowed them to have optimal lines with the boosts and 2nd -4th items can be garbage sometimes to disrupt their rhythm (plus they would have a shell or banana for defence behind them for one or two free hits *if they had a shell behind and a banana loaded up waiting*), those are the times i pray for a blue shell lol

Just got in here. Of all the GCN tracks, Dry Dry Desert? Cmon, son.

Here's hoping for some awesome 3D-World based tracks. Maybe something based on Champion's Road.

Also, hoping that at least one snes track makes it in. Heck, if the gba can get representation, then why not.

Someone in that thread said it appears that automatic drifters do get a boost as well as the manual drifters.

Makes me wonder .. . if they keep the advantages and disadvantages of auto from mkwii, to balance that out, auto may take longer to get the blue sparks. Maybe, don't have the ability to get the red sparks, like bikes had. Still, i'd take that =]

I would main Baby Yoshi if he had this face

I don't know, it's an idea that crossed my mind. Could be wrong.

Edit: Plus, we have post release patches so that's even better.

There are glitches that do not involve going backwards, such as MKWii's Bowser's Castle glitch or GCN Peach Beach glitch.

What if the Lakitu itself is glitched? Look at MK7 that made you sometimes respawn for no reason, or check this lap that was somehow not counted.

I have absolutely no doubt Nintendo will fuck up something, as they've always done.

And, post-release patches do not affect Time Trials, only online multiplayer.

I didn't say the game would be glitch free it's just that it seems to be less tolerant when it comes to falling off track, going backwards, etc meaning that unintentional shortcuts would be harder to pull off. You totally missed my point.

I'm still torn on whether to buy this. Most of my local multiplayer gaming friends don't like Mario Kart at all, and no-one seems willing to play Mario Kart 7 despite all owning 3DSes. I enjoyed the online MP with Mario Kart 7 somewhat, but I wonder whether I'll enjoy playing on my own quite so much with the Wii U game.

Does anyone else struggle to convince their friends to play this game?

*Raises Hand*

It's even harder when you have fewer friends that are only interested in select Nintendo franchises, such as one of my friends only caring for Zelda-related stuff.

Which is why Super Smash Kart should be made. Zelda-, Metroid-, and Kid Icarus-themed tracks and characters would be so great!

I actually like the fact that sticking to the Mario universe means they are free to make any kind of track rather than being constrained by pre existing worlds which would be the expectation from a Nintendo All-Star racer.

If we got Samus' Cosmopolitan City, Link's Stadium and Pit's Pit Stop instead of say Brinster, Lon Lon Ranch and Angel Land people would likely throw a tantrum, but no one minds if they do the same with Mario and co.

I'm not looking forward to going through 50cc, its really slow and boring. I assume you still have to do it to unlock stuff? Also, can anyone translate what it says in the video above on the options screen pre race where the only thing I can read is 100cc.

Yea, I'd rather just do hop straight into 100 or 150cc, complete them and have the 50cc rewards unlock too. I've been watching so much MK8 footage of tracks that I feel like I know the tracks enough to play 150cc first lol but I'll still start with 100cc because it's is nice to admire the visuals, tracks and everything else at a slower pace at first.

Also, can anyone translate what it says in the video above on the options screen pre race where the only thing I can read is 100cc.

There's nothing special about these options. It's pretty much the same as MKW's VS Mode options:

- Teams (there's likely a "none" option as well as the way the game can decide the teams if you want them)
- Items (like MKW's balanced, aggressive, strategic, none options)
- Class (cc)
- CPU difficulty
- CPU vehicles (all, karts, bikes, buggies)
- Course (pick or randomize)
- Race count
.

RE: The baby characters, I'm really not a fan of them, especially Baby Daisy which is just ridiculous. I actually decided to "main" her for the hell of it in MKWii and she ended up being my favorite character in the little duck vehicle. Still... She's useless and I would rather have Baby Wario.

I'm torn on going digital or retail because of the offer where you get a discount if you buy SMK beforehand. Weighing it up, it'll probably turn out to be the same price since retail is usually cheaper anyway, plus you get a physical copy. The whole aspect of digital downloads is fine to me for something small like an indie game, or through Steam where it's futureproof, but if in the future there's no backwards compatibility for a console game, or the feature to transfer your games on a newer system isn't present, you'd feel kinda bummed out.

I'll probably just go retail in the end, plus the box art is nice and colourful. Super Mario Kart is also the only MK I haven't played (outside of some of the Arcade ones) but I've heard it's similar to Super Circuit, which I didn't really get along with.

Probably getting it on eShop myself. SMK discount + digital deluxe (which will apply to the full price of the game rather than the discounted price after SMK) should make it cheaper than retail. I'll keep my eye out at launch though just in case.

10-12 seconds is forever now?
It adds up to the already long waiting times online. In MK7 I actually have the time to grab up some food or go to the restroom between races, and it shouldn't happen. On another note it's going to make time trial quickly irritating for many people.

I am very patient so I will easily go past this, but that won't be the case of everyone.

10-12 seconds is forever now?

10-12 seconds is what you see on the video, where it doesn't show when the loading starts. Now, if you listen, there's a “validation” jingle at 50:10, and the game exits loading at 50:31.

Yes, 20+ seconds of loading for before each race is quite pathetic for a Mario Kart game. As someone else pointed out, it was already borderline bothering in MK7, but here we are breaking records.

How about we wait for hands-ons, reviews and actual details before we over-react :)
