Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

8:01 am tomorrow here in Portugal.

A big problem I had with Sonic was that the track design isn't very interesting, it's cool to look at, but it's nowhere near the tightness a Mario Kart title has. Not to mention that you have several shortcuts, underwater sections, areal sections and anti-gravity, so not every lap has to be the same. With that said, Mount Wario is awesome and I wish there were more tracks like that.

I agree with you that the Sonic tracks generally weren't anything special - although there were a few really cool ones - but I feel like Nintendo could have done something truly incredible if they'd combined Sonic-esque dynamic tracks with the new anti-gravity mechanics. I'll no doubt put a ridiculous number of hours into MK8 and enjoy every one, but there's already a niggling feeling of what could have been.

There's always something that could have been done and I don't disagree with you, it's possible we'll see that someday, however I understand that having aerial/underwater levels where you basically fully navigate in 3D space makes it very, very hard to create interesting, tightly designed levels.

Has anyone noticed any graphics lag in any of the videos they have seen? Either in 2 player split screen or 4 player split screen (outside of the 60 fps to 30 fps change)

@the boat

Have you noticed any slowdowns at all in any of the modes? Does the fps dip below the 60/30 fps lock? SM3DW was liquid smooth in 99% of the entire game.. There was only 1 noticeable fps dip in the entire game that I noticed.

I've noticed no framerate dip. I'm not usually the best at noticing those things, but I'm pretty sure the framerate is stable. Noticed no input lag either, if that's what you're referring to.

That is pretty insane .. Did you notice a hell of a lot of graphics lag in Metroid Blast? I always hear people saying Nintendoland was rock solid in terms of fps ... yet I noticed a lot of slow downs in Metroid blast with 4 players.

I can't recall honestly.
Haven't seen many vids that would showcase it, but does this game have the manual/automatic drift option from Wii?

There's no option I think, but I hear it automatically drifts if you turn too much and don't drift. Haven't tried it honestly.

Question for The Boat -

Do you have a way to see if two NNIDs on the same console can login together for online multiplayer? Just want to know if my Player 2 can expect to raise her VR ranking while we're racing online together, or if she'll be stuck as a Guest again.

People like when skill is actually rewarded in Mario Kart so yeah, learn the Blue Shell-thwarting tricks. I never did myself. Then again I never found myself saving things like bombs and mushrooms in first place.

My tactic at least in 7 was to slow down and take out 2nd or as many people as possible down with me if they were close.

Oh the rage it started in my brother lol.

Good question, I'll try it out now.
EDIT: Yes you can :) When selecting the Mii for the second player, a user list appears above the Miis from Mii Maker and has their ranking.

Your momma so fat when she drifts, she drifts into a McDonalds. On purpose.

McDonald's Drive Through first DLC track confirmed.
Something I'm unsure about - can't you upload the reels from Mario Kart TV to Miiverse? I only see screenshots of the reels published, but not the videos themselves.

The system isn't working correctly yet, Youtube upload is also inactive at the time.

If the gamepad screen stays active when we're using a different control method, I'm going to have it proped up with the stand right next to the TV so it's easier to see both screens while racing.

Yep, same :D

Good use of it, really. Letting me see more game screen but still allowing me to see the info about rank and the map.

So I'm hosting a Mario Kart 8 inspired gathering a couple days after release, and am trying to find out if we know how much of the game is unlocked for multiplayer at the start and if there's anything like a tournament mode for local play.

Apologies if these things are answered in the thread, I'm oddly trying to not spoil too much of the game so only glanced through it a bit.

GP mode is playable with multiple players this time and unlocks everything as it normally would, from what we've been told.

I take it everyone here already knows about the leaked Edge review?

It wasn't leaked. Some quotes:

Even 2011′s effervescent 3DS outing, Mario Kart 7, feels somewhat lifeless by comparison. The new HD visuals are gorgeous, but Nintendo has also built on 7′s neatly interlaced mechanics and introduced a nuanced handling model to create the greatest Mario Kart yet.

“The Mario Kart series’ battle arenas were designed to funnel players into each other, but now you’ll spend long stretches of time without even catching sight of a potential target as you trek round the circuit.” “But even this isn’t enough to detract from an otherwise-joyous follow-up to the series’ excellent 3DS outing. That it offers as much of its own innovation again speaks volumes; Mario Kart 8 is as essential a purchase as Super Mario 3D World.”

9/10 like Mario Kart 7 and Advance. DS and 64DD 8/10. Mario Kart Wii got 6/10. Double Dash 5/10

No, it is? Or no it isn't? No meaning yes?

just breaking balls :)

Separately, I'm thinking of calling up Eric Cartman to help arrange freezing myself until the 30th. I can't take this. The last time I was more hyped than this for a game is Mass Effect 3. Though I think part of the reason for that is the absolutely enormous info dump so far before release, with press/reviewers having their hands on the game for weeks already...

I should have put myself on blackout when I still had the chance. :(
