Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

While I don't really care one way or another what MK8 scores (since I'm pretty sure I'll love it), I'm not expecting super great scores. I'd say average will be 7.5-8.5 from all the major outlets (not including Nintendo-fan sites). There's a lot to love about MK8, but I won't be surprised if points are taken off for lack of gamepad features, lack of modes, poor roster, and a subpar battle mode.

I can't imagine a metascore worse than MK7 or MKWii. Optimistic prediction for me is low 93. Pessimistic prediction 87. I really can't see it being lower than MK7. But I guess we'll see.

Well I'm going with whatever is on virtual console. If Super Circuit is there I'll get that. I never got to play Mario Kart SNES (my mom got me a genesis), so now that I'm a grown ass man, I'd like to go back and play it.

If you haven't played SNES Mario Kart go for it then. It is not great but it can be challenging at least. Super Circuit is not on the virtual console

Super Circuit is better than those two :P

But if you have to chose between those games, I'd go with 64 since it does have more varied and better designed courses

Hell no. The courses in 64 are long and dull, the courses in super are short, narrow and tight. The choice is obvious.

Well, I was just mainly talking about from the big outlets (not an overall score on metacritic or anything). I think 87-90 is a good estimate.

I'm predicting the same metacritic as 3D World - 93.

There's no way this will score lower than 3D World, it looks equally gorgeous and is much higher in replay value due to the nature of the game and the online.

I don't understand this comment. The vehicles turn a hell of a lot better in 64 than Wii (again sport bikes notwithstanding).

I vehemently disagree, and my issues with the kart handling is compounded by a lot of other mechanical issues I have with the game (mainly how doing anything at all is liable to cause a spinout).

I actually think that's one of the areas that the series has only improved in as time has gone on. They've missed the mark with track design and item distribution time and time again, but they only started to hit the mark on kart handling in DD (and I'm at least okay with it in Super Circuit).

The only long one is Rainbow Road and Royal Raceway is too boring, the rest of them are fine. They have lots of interesting hazards and the tracks have interesting shortcuts.

SNES tracks are not as interesting

We just must be looking for drastically different things out of the kart handling then. *shrugs*

I can't say I ever had many complaints about spinouts (and in that game you could actually recover from a banana before spinning out, which I liked).

I agree with this for the most part, though I like royal raceway. The two tracks in 64 I find to be too long and boring are Wario Stadium and Rainbow Road. I don't have any significant complaints about any of the other ones. imo Super Mario Kart has not aged well at all, with bland courses and meh controls.

But just bananas. Tap a heavy character? Spin out. Make a sharp turn because where you don't or can't drift due to hazards? Spin out. Get knocked around and lightly tap the wall? Spin out. Bump into a kart that's not moving? Spin out.

It's awful. I replayed all of 150cc less than a week ago and I have no fondness for the game anymore, at least in singleplayer. I'm curious how I'll feel about battle mode after I try it out again.

Eh, it never bothered me enormously. Any time it DID start to bother me a little I just switched to a heavy character, mitigating a large percentage of that. The crazy rubberbanding and cheap AI bothered me more.

Game Informer just posted a Test Chamber for this

MKTV looks like so much fun.

To anyone who has this game, are you able to make multiple clips out of the same video?

So if you wanted to save a clip focusing on items, and another on a racer, can you do that?

iirc, the game will save up to 12 full faces to view any time. I'm wondering if you can view them races, and edit them, and upload another clip to youtube/miiverse.

It'll be neat uploading a full race to the MK8 custom miiverse community associated with that tournament.

Well, the roster is "Meh" XD

In that guys hands on impression at mariokartwii website.. he stated the following..

"FRAMERATE IN OFFLINE MULTIPLAYER

Bad. Not much else to say… 30 FPS, and frames are sometimes skipped altogether. It will be quite problematic."

This is the very first time I have heard of any kind of framerate issues...

We're so close to playing this gem

Seems local MP has issues and battles are the only bad so far. I am glad hop spamming is gone though. I cannot stand Mario Kart 7 MP because of things like that.

I've heard from others, and just that recent game informer video above, that the 30fps is solid in 3/4 players.

I guess we'll have to wait for a digital foundry test.

Still not sure about Battle Mode. I'm just glad they added the new "U-turn" maneuver. Out of all MKs on home consoles, it coincidentally showed up on the Wii "U".

I think it'll keep the Battles interesting, with being able to whip around in an instant.

the roster leaves me a bit cold, tbh. I hate the babies and only two out of seven Koopalings are cool in my book, still, Shy Guy is in so I'm not complaining much

I expect a hella lot better DLC/unlockable characters, tho

That's probably the scores I'll lean toward when I finally play it, but Mario Kart scores are usually all over the place. I remember Destructoid giving MK7 a 5/10, lol. Dat Sterling.

Jim will mark it low I think if he reviews it, he thinks the series doesn't do anything new from his previous reviews, partly right but refining and adding new to something that basically works isn't necessarily a bad thing (note his love for dynasty warriors that basically does the same thing :P)

Also think Eurogamer will give it a 7 , and make at least 2 mentions to "saving the WiiU" with a disparaging subheading as well!

Otherwise 8-9 in most places, metacritic of 89 overall due to a few outliers dragging it down

[EDIT] The stuff about 30 fps for 3/4 player was already known, it shouldn't be a surprise. Maybe the person writing the hands on expected 60 for 4 player as well, but hopefully digital foundry will do something on it.

Yeah. Every time I feel my hype skyrocketing, I remember the horrible, horrible roster, and get all unhyped. I know the roster seems unimportant to many, but with them being practically aesthetic based on weight, I feel that that gives you an even bigger reason to care about them individually, as you're likely going to drift towards using your favorite of whatever weight class you choose.

Still strongly hoping for DLC on this one.

guys im confused about club nintendo. i have a nnid, but i dont kno if i have a club nintendo account. is it a different accoutn or i just need to link them.

edit: i have 3d world and i think even an old kirby that has a code for it.

I don't think games in different genres are reviewed comparatively like that.

I'm interested in scores because I like seeing peoples' reactions.

That said when it comes to reviews themselves I'm mostly curious about local play.

I really hope 4-player isn't some disaster or something. Same for 2-player online. These were by far the most important aspects of Mario Kart Wii for me.

So all loading seems to consistently be 12 seconds. I'm okay with that.

It's not bad, though I'm wondering why it's not less after the initial race - characters and vehicles shouldn't be changing after that and I figured that'd be a good chunk. I'm probably overestimating how much memory they must take.

Seriously, what's the time of the embargo lift, exactly? Is it 3AM or 1PM EDT?

I misread your previous post when you said '1pm EDT'. I didn't see the word 'tomorrow', so I woke up at 1am here to check XD. But yes, 3am EDT/5pm AEST for me.

edit: and my stupidity continues, considering EDT to AEST is a 10 hour time difference, not 12. So I really did wake up at 1am for nothing >_<.
