Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash Review Thread

So how barebones is the online play?

Private matches with friends? Can I play with a friend and take on other doubles teams? How comprehensive are the stats and ranking system?

Mario and friends make an ace return in Mario Tennis Ultra Smash for the Wii U! Download the game from the Nintendo e-Shop now to receive a free download of Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64!

Select Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 from the Wii U menu to access the rest of the modes in the game. You can play the exhibition mode in HD by selecting Mario Tennis Ultra Smash from the same menu. However, please note that some of the characters and courts will not be available in this mode.

I believe online you can't play with friends whatsoever.

What a fucking joke.

Even with no content, if they managed to deliver a somewhat competent online mode I would be all over this as all I really ever wanted since Power Tennis was an exact copy of that game with online play.

But I can't even match up with friends? The fuck is this shit, Nintendo?

Ye i am really pissed at Nintendo for making this shit game.

No private matches. You can play with a local friend (or amiibo) and play with another doubles team online.

Don't think there's much stat tracking. And you only get a number like in Mario Kart Wii/7/8 for your online ranking.

The depressing thing is that so much of what's wrong with this game can totally be patched in Splatoon style, but like......what are the chances they'll actually do anything?

The cheap cash in approach is just so unbecoming.

- I wonder if they're releasing an incomplete game, and then will add modes later like Splatoon.

- Or if it's just to get the game out and forget about it.

I guess I'm hoping for the latter, so other stuff can be worked on...
But still, if enough was added, I could buy the game later at around 20-30 bucks.

From day one, it's been clear Nintendo hasn't cared about this game. Splatoon got the red carpet marketing treatmant from Nintendo. It even had it's own direct.

This is literally a filler game to pad out the holiday season, so when Reggie does his usual spiel he has the standard 4-5 games to list as to why "there's never been a better time to be a Nintendo fan".

^^Yeah, pretty much. They just wanted a title that might sell a few units on name alone

So, Nintendo sucked this year. Must have moved everything good to NX

In total, this year hasn't been that much worse than last year.

It only seems that way because Bayo2, Smash, and MK8 are all Game of the Generation level. Assuming you mean Wii U.

This year has had good entries in several franchises:
Mario Maker, Kirby, Yoshi, Xeno, Splatoon,
If it had star fox it would be closer to last year.

Those are just the nintendo published games there was some great 3rd party 3ds games released this year also plenty to enjoy on nintendo hardware this year.

I'll add Affordable Space Adventures and Code Name STEAM. I also enjoyed Chibi-Robo for what it's worth. Not an incredibly exciting year, but not terrible by any means.

But I also agree with the poster that started this that I'm guessing Nintendo's focus is on NX right now. And rightfully so.

Sigh.

I wanted to believe there'd be a bunch of secret content that Nintendo was going to just be like "SURPRISE!" with.

Guess not. Oh well.

Today used to be the best day to be a Nintendo fan since it's the day where they usually releases their big and most anticipated games, but this year, that day of rejoice is no more. I'm actually kinda sad right now. Even more since I only own a Wii U at the moment... It's in moments like this where I feel like selling it and get another console or simply leave videogames for a while I'm not joking :'(

At least Xenoblade is coming in two weeks...

i was hesitant to list that game despite me loving since it for some reason has a bad rep :(

I haven't played it yet, but from what I've heard many people love it - just reviewers didn't.

Anyway, you can add Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam and New Style Boutique 2 for us Europeans. :)

I love Mario Maker and Yoshi, but 2014 was way better. MK8, Smash, Bayo, Donkey Kong, and Captain Toad were all bangers. I'm excited for Xenoblade, but I tend to fall on the side of "Kirby kind of sucks".

3DS also had a way better year last year. Pokemon and Bravely Default what's uuuuuup.

Oh yea, forgot about DK. Always forget it wasn't 2013.
MK8 DLC part deux was this year too.

2016 could be fun. I'll likely be getting Pokken, Star Fox, not sure about TPHD, Zelda U. FE# will likely be localised next year, I won't be getting it though. We'll have to see about unnanounced games.

Game download is like 847MB, downloaded this and Super Mystery Dungeon after arriving from work at 3AM in minutes.

Menu is sleek, reminds me of Mario Kart 8. Of course the lack of options and additional things is a bummer, but in my case no biggie.

You can see all unlockables on the screen and liked that you can get them either by doing specific things or in-game credit you earn playing.

Visuals and animations are amazing as expected, game's fun too and plays great.

Not dissapointed, as the game is what I expected and something I'll play more with friends locally than on my own.

The Gold Mario does look great, if someone knows a way to unlock it permanently let me know. :p

I was looking for an OT but there's only this and a negative impression thread. =D

Anyway transcribed the staff list (glad that wasn't cut as well =P) and it's essentially the same as for Mario Golf World Tour. So either Camelot is essentially fed up doing those tennis games (golf clearly surpassed tennis in creativity quite some time ago), or they got way too little time (though they used to be more efficient with it), or there will be a slight update in time for the later Japanese release in January (not holding my breath).

Been playing with a group of friends for almost 9 hours straight, even the ones that don't play video games are loving it, besides the lack of content, I'm enjoying this game A LOT, in no way it deserves anything below 6.

I miss power shots and the gimmick courts, but I prefer the new gimmicks, and the solid mechanics are very freekin satisfying, I can definitely recommend it, even the net code is rock solid.

It's a great party game, just like every other multiplayer Nintendo game. I don't think anyone is denying that. In that department it's as good as previous entries.

The lackluster modes, features, online, roster etc are legitimate concerns thus really low scores are completely justified.

I would understand why the game has general low scores, but rating it as low 3 or 4? IMO that is not justified unless the game is compleately boring or broken, the game doesn't deserve such low scores unless you bought the game for purely single player purposes.

This game is the equivalent of Mario Kart 8 (A game which has tight controls and great graphics) having one figure 8 circuit to race on with different material, a mode with only mega mushrooms, a mode with items and a mode without. Oh and you can play online but not with your friends, and the roster is smaller than Mario Kart 64. And it has no grand prix, just 1 v 1 racing until you lose.

Yes that is deserving of a 3/10. Unless it's a free to play game.

So... They really didn't add Mushroom Kingdom Courts. After the online confirmation thread, I was sure that a standard thing like new court designs would be in... Weird.

1- The "stadium" is the same but the courts play differently.
2- The Roaster is fine.
3- I actually prefer the new 1 v 1 to what other console Mario Tennis games offer.

Does it lack content? compared to other MT games, definitely, does it deserve the hate? Games are about gameplay and fun, this game does both with out offering much, in my humble opinion it doesn't deserve the hate, but I do understand the disappointment.

3/10 games aren't games that are fundamentally sound, but lack content, as this game is. 3/10 games are basically broken unplayable messes never worth buying.

This game would be a great game at sub 20 as an eShop exclusive or a budget release. The graphics, animation and raw gameplay are fine, if not exceptional. Its largest issue is missing substantial content over past games in the series. Which is not an issue that warrants a 3/10, 6/10 or so seems more appropriate. Or more "Hold off until a good deal" type game.

And shouldn't price be taken into account in a review? For what they are charging this is a 3/10 game in my book. So you're telling me if a game has one mode but it looks great and plays great and is charged at full price it's not deserving of a 3/10? Especially if it's lacking in content compared to the game that came out 15 years ago?

You can only be awarded so many points for not being fundamentally flawed. This game is as barebones as a game can get. Anyway this is just my opinion. This is one of the rare cases where I'd award the game 3/10 but still keep it because it works. Not many games can do that. However it's because it's Mario Tennis in HD for the first time. If they pull this crap again then I'm going nowhere near it.

Not only the first two, the Tahahashi brothers did all Shining games until after the three Shining Force 3 episodes.

Sonic Software Planning was founded by the older Hiroyuki Takahashi and was dependent on Sega. Camelot Software Planning was founded by the younger Shugo Takahashi who left mid-1990s to be more independent from Sega. After Shining Force 3 Sonic closed and all staff continued as Camelot. The brothers own the private Camelot (likely together with some other veteran staff like Yasuhiro Taguchi and Masaaki Uno etc.).

This is really getting canned. Mario Tennis could have been so much more then this but Nintendo stopped trying. I just thought of a good idea. They should have let the Tony Hawk 5 team make a Mario Tennis game. Okay maybe not.

Not for the final score. Mention it in the review, obviously, but if a 3/10 game can double its score just by waiting a year and being used for 15 dollars, then it hardly seems like a proper score.

The game didn't improve in that time at all, only the price did. And yet the score would change if we factored price in, despite nothing being different about the actual game.

Hmmm, I may pick this up when it drops in price then. It sucks that there isn't a full-fledged game here, but picking it up for occasional couch multiplayer seems good. If they would patch shit into this game it could be awesome, but I'll pick it up just for the local multi. Still sucks they pushed out this weak effort

Price doesn't change how good or bad a game is. Prices fluctuate and what's expensive to one person may not be to another

Oh come on. This game would be reviewed higher if it was advertised and sold as a £20 game and you know it.

Using that logic how can a game worth 99p ever score higher than a full price game? If I've paid 99p for a game then if it has just one thing to do and that thing is perfect then it would score highly.

Whether or not that's true doesn't change my feelings on it.

And now you just explained why I don't play mobile games.

But it's advertised as a full Mario Tennis experience. You could argue that extra functionality is never a bad thing but this game advertises the Amiibo feature on the box and makes a big deal out of it, so people might actually buy the game just for that. If it then has stupid decisions like only letting you play 2 v 1 against a com with your Amiibo while you're offline then that's negative. Same way as it is said to have online play yet you can't play with friends. These all become negatives as opposed to positives.

Listen I'm the biggest Mario Tennis fan out there and I'm keeping this game but how anyone can defend the scores is beyond me. Sometimes you just have to accept it.

Yea it would be, and that makes the scores pretty meaningless.

Gameplay doesn't magically get better once a game goes on sale.

Neither do I but I play eshop titles that are worth a quid or 5 quid or whatever. I don't expect these to compare to smash bros for them to score over 8/10 otherwise none of them will. You have to review them according to their budget and cost!
