Marvel Legends (toyline)

Remember these? The low priced but great quality 6 inch Marvel action figures produced by Toy Biz from 2002 to 2006? I say they were low priced because they were £7 back in the day.

There were other lines (Spider-Man Classics, X-Men Classics etc.) that were basically the same thing.

They went away for a few years because Toy Biz shut down only for Hasbro to bring them back in 2007 or 2008. Those were dark times. Shoddy paint jobs and sculpting with poor articulation. Fast forward to 2010 or 2011 onwards and we now have pretty good figures again. Unfortunately, the articulation and paint isn't as good compared to Toy Biz, but they're still pretty great. The downside? They're usually £18 - £20 now.

So, who collects these? Did you before? Do you still do? Are you going to now? Am I one of the few who knows about this toyline? So many questions.

Was that the line with the build-a-Sentinel? That was pretty cool.
Indeed it was. BAF waves are still in the current line, but they don't seem to be very large characters like before.

Also forgot to add that Hasbro's Legends also cover Marvel movie figures like Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

So if your kid (or you!) want a good Marvel movie toy, you know which ones are the best.

I like them and still collect them.

For me, 1/12th is an excellent scale for figures. They are big enough to get some nice detail and posability without taking up tons of space or breaking your bank account, so you can collect more characters that way.

Here is the next Marvel Legends series, currently for pre-order. They are hitting market in late Jan/early Feb.

The toy biz figures are amazing, once Hasbro took over the quality dropped significantly.

It's true, however the last several waves have been a big improvement. They are the best Hasbro has ever done.

I have some of these, may favourite being the Deadpool figure (I have him set up on a red Vespa!).

I bought the whole case of Guardians of the Galaxy just to get the Groot BAF but they're all still in their boxes as I now Mainly collect Hot Toys. I should probably sell them.

Damn, I have to get Hawkeye and Witch!

I'm liking that Captain Marvel, Thor, and Scarlet Witch.

"great quality"
I remember only having one problem with a Toy Biz figure. It was a Psylocke from their last few waves (when their quality was on the decline as they were close to shutting down) and her arm just broke off.

You could sell them for a decent price later on, I think. I also have Deadpool (the Hasbro two-pack one), but it's difficult for me to pose him because of the feet.

This one:

Edit: There's a neat looking Spider-Man line coming this year with a Build-A-Figure Hobgoblin.

I have that one too, I have him on his stand as its the only way I can keep him up properly.

I got the Toy Wiz version complete off Ebay (no box) for around £35. A bit pricey for a 1/12 figure but worth it for me, he's amazing :)

My Deadpool shelf:

Fuck paying £20 for those
Amazon (at least in the UK) seems to be doing better prices for certain figures. That Superior Spider-Man up there is around £7 on Amazon now. Figures like Nova have gone up to £25 on there, though, which is insane.

I remember checking eBay for him a few years ago and even with no box they had insane prices! Usually up in the £70 and above region.

Niiiice!

They are $20 in the USA if you can find them at MSRP. About half of them end up being discounted before they disappear from shelves/online stores, so you can get a lot of them for $15 or even $10 sometimes. I've even seen them sell for under $4 on amazon before. The other half are typically more in demand and sell out.

For example, that female Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch figure shown above, the pre-orders for both are already sold out on toysrus.com -- a pretty strong indicator they will be the two hardest to get your hands on.

I have two of the ToyBiz Deadpools and the Hasbro 2-pack one. Some of my favorites in my collection.

Honestly, Hasbro lately has been producing higher quality figures than the old ToyBiz stuff. Their Nova is one of the best 6" comic book figures I own.

I have a few of these. Green Goblin/Black Panther/Angel and I think one or two more. I'd buy more but I really don't have anywhere to put them.

I very nearly ordered the whole set with the Jubilee BAF (she looked great) but cancelled in the end. My wife suggested that instead of buying lots of cheap figures and cluttering up space with them I should collect Hot Toys as despite being pricey you get excellent quality and ultimately buy less - because of the cost. I thought that was her best idea ever but I'm up to 5 Hot Toys already and that's without the GotG team I've ordered so far!

oh god, is that a superior spider-man figure?

Oh god. oh god. oh god. I didn't need to know this existed, my poor finances!

Edit: And there's Agent Venom as well. That's awesome.

OMG

I miss collecting toys. :(

You can get that on discount on toysrus.com for $60 right now!

That's $12 per figure so it's a nice deal if you like how they look.

I've thought about this before, just not sure... Hot Toys are eeeeexpensive and you have to dedicate a lot of space to displaying them.

Some do look great, but despite their best efforts some give me a strong uncanny valley feeling

I was so close to joining the whole Hot Toys thing, but I couldn't part with so much money on just a few :/

Yes it is. And I hear it is fantastic.

I'd pay £7-12, but never £20-£25

It's so worth it though, especially if you're picky (which I need to learn to be). I've never had as much fun collecting anything as I did their Avengers line. Seeing the group grow every few months got me all giddy. You should do it with GOTG you won't regret it.

For Kids: Diamond Select / Marvel Select (and DC Collectibles) are where it's at for toys now. Quality figures with a good size to them.

For my son (who's only 1yr old right now), I currently have Red Hulk, Thanos, classic Wolverine, Thrasher Suit Batman, Superman, and Flash. Obviously he won't be playing with them for about 4yrs, or so. For my daughter, I have Supergirl, Batgirl, Storm, Wonder Woman, She-Hulk, Super Lois (not from DC Collectibles), and Hawkgirl. She loves them...just not as much as her American Girl doll.

For adults: It doesn't get any better than Hot Toys :-)

Just started collecting figures, so missed out on the quality, low price and amazing gain BAF guys years ago.

I have one the new legends wolverines and superior spider-man and they are amazing.

I would, but I'm an unemployed 18 year old student, haha. It's taken all my might not to cave for Hot Toys Star Lord. Age of Ultron Vision might be what changes my mind, though.

Damn. You're a cool dad. Just be careful if you decide to buy the DC Collectibles Batman Animated Series figures! They seem to be very fragile.

Which Wolverine you have? I managed to get the X-Force version of him around two years ago.

I was/am so tempted with Hot Toys, but they're so expensive. Do they allow monthly payments? I'm sure they did.

they do on sideshowtoy.com

this is why i hate figure threads, it always ends up talking about hot toys which are 10x more expensive than marvel legends

They (Hot Toys) are obscenely expensive, I remember opening my first one and being afraid to handle it in case I broke it but you get used to it after a while.

I paid £125 for the whole case of the GotG Legens figures. I just paid £150 for a Red Skull Hot Toy so on average you get 5-6 Legends for the price of one HT.

But when you look at them every day and they make you smile it's worth it - for me :)

My favourite is the Avengers Loki - if sex could manifest itself as a 'thing' it would choose this figure!

As with anything that costs money, collecting them should be done in moderation but you need self control for that lol.

Good point - sorry for derailing. There is still a place in my collection for the Legends line!

$40 for postage to UK!? Fuck dat.

I collect funkos, thats it for me really. I get most of my funkos from Lootcrate/Nerdblock/ArcadeBlock too.

If you're in UK/EU collectiblesdirect.co.uk let you pay flexibly too - a lot cheaper than importing.

I didn't know there was a Thanos Legends figure. I'm gonna have to track him down to go with my Guardians, should I decide to keep them.
Oh, thanks for the info! (I'm going to buy a Hot Toys one day. It is inevitable)

Also, I think that Thanos is comics Thanos, just so you know! I wonder if they have any plans for movie Thanos.

Another option for making monthly payments is to pre-order Hot Toys at your local comic shop. That's what I do. I pre-order as soon as the figure is listed on Sideshow, then I make $20-$30 payments each paycheck until the figure is paid off. It's a small enough increment that my wife doesn't notice.

And you get to support a local business in the process.

Yes, but for the price of this shelf:
My Deadpool shelf:

he could've bought the 1/6th scale Deadpool figure and, IMO, it would look a lot better.

I'm glad I learned about HT before I fell too far down the figure-collecting hole. I have 3 HT figures (Avengers Hulk, Avengers Iron Man mk7, and MoS Superman) and I couldn't be happier. Going to get the Avengers AoU Capt America this year.

Not Legends, but I want 80s Wolverine:

I had the Secret Wars one when I was a kid (among others):

JAL4Qx1.jpg

lol look at it

I got that one. It's Marvel Select figures, which I think blow Legends out of the water. The only things Legends has over Marvel Select is the accessories(including the "build-a-figure" thing) and the larger number and variety of figures.

Yes I agree, if you are only going to buy one character over and over then the money may be better spent on a single higher quality item

But for those who are interested in buying lots of characters you have to consider things more carefully

And then you also have to consider things such a that not many characters will even get Hot Toys versions. It's almost entirely film characters at this point.

How is it in person? Never seen one on the shelves. I might pull the trigger.

My general rule of thumb:

Marvel Select is awesome for larger characters like Hulk or Thanos. I think their normal sized characters don't stack up too well.

LEFT: Marvel Select Juggs
RIGHT: A Marvel Legend

Keep in mind that massive figure can be acquired for $20. A steal.

Yep, I still collect some now and again depending on what the build-a-figure is. Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy line was amazing. I was pissed when they made comic Rocket a build a figure a couple of years back. It made no damn sense and they did the same thing with Puck too in a Wolverine wave. I opine for the days of the giant size build a figures. There aren't much more they could make that could really sell a wave, but I would LOVE to see the first form of Onslaught (with a Red Skull variant head since AXIS just finished up), I would also like to see a bigger version of phase 2 Onslaught as well.

Hasbro has really stepped their game up in terms of figure quality from their original couple of waves. The only problem now is that the distribution on some of the waves was complete trash. The Jubilee wave was pretty much in and out of stores within a couple of weeks. There was a non Build-A-Figure wave that had Doom, Ultimate cap, Punisher and a few others that was pretty hard to find too.

I feel really bad for ToyBiz, they ended up changing their name to Marvel Toys just to lose the Marvel Legends line up. They produced a couple of waves of Legendary Comic Book Heroes which gave us a pretty snazzy Judge Dredd figure as well as Savage Dragon. Unfortunately that died off after a couple of waves.

The 6" collectors market sure was buzzing a 5 to 6 years ago. I even collected the old SOTA Toys Street Fighter figures so I could have a Marvel Vs Capcom thing going on. Sadly, they never completed the full roster, but got quite a few out there that were amazing. NECA didn't show the same gusto that SOTA did when pushing out their line of Street Fighter IV figures.

DC is pretty much out of the game too since DC Universe Classics is pretty much dead. The Blackest Night wave was amazing though.

Really? I love DC Collectibles figures. They are producing them in big numbers.

Nice! That's a version that came out after the one I have, it's a repaint. Here's mine (Yes, Deadpool is leaning on the Eiffel Tower): http://i.imgur.com/zH2zLCT.jpg

Also, I really like that Lion-O. Looks like I've found myself another figure to buy!

A reviewer I watch on YouTube (ShartimusPrime) said that the Thrasher Suit Batman really feels like an old school Toy Biz Marvel Legend in a good way.

That Scarlet Witch. <3

I love collecting figures, but everyone I live with hates when I put them up. (At my parents home, my mum would think girls shouldn't have them and she makes an effort to put them away when she visits my apartment.) And now, living with my boyfriend, he thinks they're too dorky. :P
