Good numbers for the Last Remnant considering the shitty reviews it's suffering. What numbers did stuff like Lost Odyssey/Blue Dragon pull week one?

A 10/10/9/9 is a shitty review? Japan doesn't give a crap about foreign reviews, distributors are much more concerned with any game's Famitsu review.

Wii - 35,298
DSL - 18,580
PS3 - 17,436
X360 - 15,474
PS2 - 5,281

There was this guy (I think he got banned) who had some very optimistic predictions for 360 sales in the remaining weeks of the year.

How far off is he?

For comparative purposes a top 15 PS3 software chart would be interesting if you had that info.

Would be interesting to see how different the Wii LTD chart will be by Nov 2009. MH3 should make it easily... Maybe it could be the first 3rd party Wii game to make it to 1 million.

edit -- I'm sure the top 3 will stay up there for a long time, if not for the remainder of the console's life... Maybe AC will squeeze in there before it is over.

Yeah^. Fixed.

Anyway, per request, the top 15 PS3 LTD. Just to be a schmuck, I kept the same scale:

Note:
Only 3 are published by SCE.

Wow. Chrono Trigger did really great in its first week. I guess it's to be expected. CT did 2m in Japan on the SFC though, so I guess it shouldn't come as too big a surprise. Still, that was 13 years ago.

Go go Chrono Trigger. Fetch us Chrono Trigger 2 (or 3, if you consider Chrono Cross as CT2), as long as it is more like CT than CC.

It seems Nintendo has not been advertising Wii Music for the past couple of weeks. I wonder if they are cutting and running on this one.

Or the fact that in the ads the music sounds TERRIBLE. Sounds like midi-music. Can't they have got real instrument sounds? It is 2008...not 1980's.

Wii Music's advertising was basically taken up by Animal Crossing and DSi. I don't think there is any question that it underperformed, so either they are going to let it go or they are hoping the initial blitz was enough to set people up and are depending on word of mouth.

Also I wouldn't doubt that PSP can overtake DSi's sales at least for a while. You are talking about a situation where something like 1 in 5 people own a DS. PSP is the "second system." I would imagine it like Xbox late last gen in the US, it picked up steam as the second console because everyone already had PS2s. The DSi in effect is probably trying to lure people into double dipping because they are close to the saturation point. It's not like PSP will finish anywhere near DS though.

I hope not. Just picked up my PAL copy yesterday and I’m really very impressed with it, and it certainly deserves to sell better than it has done so far. Pure anecdotal evidence makes me wonder whether it will pick up - colleagues and friends have only just started mentioning it and buying it, and that’s after a fortnight or so of relatively heavy TV advertising here.

Those total numbers for PS3 are fairly horrible, even with the system sales. What's the attach ratio for it? Must be really low, or there are loads of 5k sellers somewhere.

Don't know if it's encouraging or sad that Valkyria Chronicles is the 14th best seller so far...

They should have used parts from the JC video. I haven't seen the Japanese ads, but the ads they have here have un-sold (?) me on the game.

It's even worse than that bloody annoying Lips ad.

It will if Square-Enix has a SURPRAAISE and Sony keeps pumping money into FPS games.

360 is already much cheaper in Japan and has a MUCH better lineup of JRPGs than the PS3 (for now) and yet it's still getting outsold.

Next year when the PS3 receives a price drop, WKS releases followed up by FFXIII demo and FFXIII exclusivity a few months later? Certainly won't be seeing the Xbox 360 outselling it in Japan next year overall.

I agree. The PS3 will sell more. But that fact that for months the numbers have been pretty close are not what anyone expected. So I guess nothing would surprise me anymore.

I also hope that price drop comes soon. These PS3 numbers are painful.

Samurai Dou 3 is doing modestly well as a mid-budget game from a relatively small developer. Good for Spike.

Pretty much. When PS3 gets it's long-awaited JRPGs, Star Ocean 4 will be probably the only time when 360 blips in the radar in 2009.

Just for the sake of competition, I'd rather see 360 in front of PS3 for the time being.

That we even discuss the 360 outselling the PS3 in Japan speaks volumes about how the situation has completely turned around compared to last generation, where the PS2 outsold the Xbox 45 to 1.

PS3 has outsold the Wii for certain weeks.

Hell, 360 has outsold the Wii for certain week(s?).

Just because there are a few weeks where the 360 has outsold the PS3 doesn't really tell us anything. Or really speak volumes at all. Microsoft has tried every single thing in the book almost in Japan and they've still failed to really make much headway, all of this in the face of Sony seemingly not giving much of a shit about the region in comparison so far.

The LTD numbers are still something like 750k vs 2.4 million (360 vs. ps3) I think.

In other words, just because the PS3 is doing shitty doesn't somehow mean the 360 is doing great.

You're sooo obsessed by your quest that you didn't even read his post, did you?

He's stating that the situation has fundamentally changed since the ps2 era. I really don't understand how you can argue against that.

The point is: Microsoft is cutting into Sony's bread and butter here in Japan, they are taking away developers, potential customers, and making a better brand name for themselves. They are also stealing away Sony's hardcore following for JRPG's in America. The hardware ratio last generation was ridiculous, as shown by Frillen. Sony's monstrous lead has now been cut down to a 3.2:1 ratio. You don't have to be fucking Albert Einstein to realize that this is a great accomplishment for Microsoft.

If they are, the results don't really show it.

Like I said, just because the PS3 is doing horribly in Japan doesn't really mean Microsoft is making gigantic headway in the region. All of their investment in Japan really hasn't seemed to pay off all that much. I do give them credit for what they've tried to do over there; they obviously have a MUCH better JRPG lineup than the PS3 has. Unfortunately for them, it hasn't seemed to really matter.

They are also stealing away Sony's hardcore following for JRPG's in America.

Yeah, but given how niche that following is it really isn't all that significant.

What's really happened is that Sony has tanked from last gen to this gen in japan; not that Microsoft has genuinely succeeded. That's the difference. You don't have to be albert einstein to see that either.

I'm not sure Sony failing in Japan is a great accomplishment for Microsoft, given that their failure in the region has little to do with whatever Microsoft has accomplished over there.

Not only is sony tanking compared to last gen, but Microsoft is also just trying more compared to last gen.

Sony tanking wouldn't help MS at all if they had continued with their Xbox 1 strategy in japan with the 360.

Hoffman, is it really so hard for you to give MS a little credit for their strategy in Japan this gen? They'll easily double the sales of the xbox over there... and whilst they'll still not be a major player or particularly significant in the greater scheme of things it is an achievement that should be recognised.

Four titles above 100k, wow.

Fantastic opening week for Last Remnant. The best for any 360 title in Japan I assume?

looking at the DP and Platinum numbers it makes me wonder if nintendo will release a silver and gold remake like they did with leaf green and fire red
