Media Create Sales: 6/30 - 7/6

I'm curious if the huge ToS dropoff is partly due to supply issues, or whether it really was just that front loaded. It might not even hit 225K now..
I threw the values for Tales into the trajectory matcher, letting it match +/- 5K each week. Only one match, but it did go on to 236K.

Here's a bigger selection to compare to, after widening it to +/- 10K for each week.

When you want to read a graph, a good place to start is the legend. It provides helpful hints to tell you what the lines represent. Next, you can read the axis markers to derive from context what each dimension of the graph represents. CHEAT CODE: The x-axis of a graph is often the measure of time!
This is good and all, but at the time he posted I'd flubbed things up in linecomparegamejp.php so that the legend text wasn't showing up.

If you guys would like me to take up the reigns again, I may be able to at least provide the OP contents. I'll be on the trains or in class when the weekly data goes live, so that's a no-go unless people want threads posted automatically without any copy-editing.

Anyways, it didn't look like too many people missed the translations and presentation. *shrug*

I miss the better presentation but if I posted about it I would appear as an ungrateful bastard to cvxfreak. Besides I never post in this topics, but I always read them (at least the first couple pages). Your effort is surely appreciated.

Cheese, as a frequent reader of Media Create threads, I really appreciate your efforts. I would have given up reading these threads long ago if the "first poster to paste untranslated Japanese wins!" mentality had won out. I don't mean to knock cvx, but it's not the same.

Ehm at the time he was posting the legend was just displaying Josh's number (as he already adressed in an earlier post). You could guess that it was MGS2+3's sales but certainly not know by looking at the graph.

Yeah they've been creeping back up the last few weeks. Any reason for this? Promotion, Anime stuff?

Have they been creeping up or has the cut-off for making it onto the chart been creeping down?

CVXFreak has done a great job. But I miss the Cheese. ^_^

Feel free to make comments about how much you miss Cheese's format, because I miss it too. :D

The ease he's provided the MC charts since last year was really taken for granted.

The last time they made the top 30 was the week of January 7. Since then there have been plenty of times the top 30 ended under 5K or even 4K, so it at least hasn't been selling 5100 each week. Based on the LTD then and now, it seems like they've averaged maybe 3.5K a week?

However, since we don't have the weekly view it's hard to characterize its weekly performance as creeping in any particular direction.

Platinum, perhaps?
I'm not into Pokemon - is there a benefit to own either Pearl or Diamond on top of Platinum? If it's just a couple of Pokemon I doubt people are so hardcore, yet haven't bought either P or D by now.

Could be - I'm too lazy to look it up though. Maybe donny can help, he posts the Famistu chart.

What I don't understand is why people expected MGS4 to deviate largely from the sales of the prior games in the series.

For a lot of people, I think it's honestly not having a clear picture of the franchise's previous performance (with a side of not knowing how being on a less popular platform hurts your title's legs.)

Let’s summarize the first half of the year. The first graph shows hardware data and total top 100 software data tracked by Media Create.

mc-hw-sw-07-08_halfyear-1.png

Hardware is down 22% and software is down 13%. We should consider lower DS sales as the only reason for the decline.

By comparing consoles to portables we see that the market now is almost divided equally if counting software unit sales. Again, DS is the reason for the declined portable sales shares.

Looking at hardware sales, the portables are still larger but the only reason for that is higher PSP sales.

The purpose of the following graph is to show this. Blue is consoles and red is portables.

famitsu-all-080629.png

For the latter half of 2008, I expect consoles to gain on the hardware side, but the opposite could happen on the software side considering new big DS games.

Edit: Updated DS/PSP graph too. The red line is an approximation in the software graph.

What did the PSP do last week? The number doesn't seem as high as I remember.

Also, it seems that the Metalspike has indeed been driven into the tracks of time.

OMG, you're BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK. I think we all missed you, everyone else filled in amazingly but there's something about your pie charts that make me all warm and fuzzy. No need to go out of your way or anything, take care of yourself and such but when you get around to it your presentation is too classic to just abandon.

I think 55 thousand, im not to sure.

Also, Thats twice and by the same 12 - 15,000 units that Enterbrain missed by how much the Wii sold. Seems PSP has made great inroads this year... but theres that Chrono Remake. (hey, sony... you see that PSN? Remote Play? Japan getting all the nice games from PSN? wink wink)

No disrespect towards the 360, but is a "bump" up to 4-5K particularly relevant/meaningful?

Yeah, it's sales have doubled the usual amount for the last couple of weeks. It was down to 2k a week for a long time.

Ok, but I guess my point is- is a bump from 2k to 4K, even if it lasts going to make any significant difference? I'm far more interested in how ToV sells- it doing well would mean a lot more than a 2K a week bump IMO.

Well, can you give a reason as to why hardware sales would suddenly double at least a month before any big release?

I suppose therein lies the fun.

I don't think it matters much, but deviations from the norm are at the least interesting and worth noting, and this is a pretty strong deviation from a long established trend.

Well if it stays at 2k a week, it will take 4 years to reach a million. At 4k it will take 2 years. I think MS's most reasonable goal this gen is to hit a million, and it is nice to see signs that this is possible. They'll have a few spikes with the new RPGs too, but it would be nice if the base sales picked up a little.

Recent Famitsu Top 30s

May 26-Jun 1, 2008
Jun 2-8, 2008
Jun 9-15, 2008
Jun 16-22, 2008

Based on the latest Famitsu numbers...
PS3 comparisons: After 86 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 19.5 weeks (July 12, 2000), where PSP was at 52.0 weeks (December 4, 2005), where GCN was at 92.3 weeks (June 16, 2003), and where Wii was at 21.7 weeks (April 27, 2007).

Wii comparisons: After 83 weeks, Wii is where GBA was at 85.7 weeks (November 7, 2002), where DS was at 67.9 weeks (March 18, 2006), where PS2 was at 95.9 weeks (December 28, 2001), and where PSP was at 146.9 weeks (September 29, 2007).

Based on the latest Media Create numbers...
DS vs PSP: Weekly shares of 45.7 / 54.3, bringing total shares to 70.0 / 30.0. If this week's rates continue, PSP catches up to DS in 1451.4 weeks (May 1, 2036). If DS stopped selling and PSP continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 231.0 weeks (December 10, 2012).

Aaaactually, the lifetime split by Media Create numbers is now more like 69.98 / 30.02, so PSP has reached above 30% total marketshare for the first time since the week of 2006-05-08. As an even further historical note, the first time it reached as high as 30% was the week of 2005-01-24, during that post-launch few months when PSP outsold DS.

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares of 24.4 / 75.6, bringing total shares to 25.8 / 74.2. If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 289.2 weeks (January 21, 2014).

Famitsu software pie for the week of 2008-06-23:

DS: 47.3
Wii: 22.3
PS2: 11.5
PSP: 10.4
PS3: 4.5
X360: 3.8

This is the first time PS2 has lead PSP in software percentage since two weeks before MHP2G. This is the closest X360 has been to PS3 since it beat it the week of this year's Idolmaster game.

A note on Famitsu/Media Create hardware discrepancies: the Wii number for the week of 06-23 sticks out, with Famitsu having 60K and Media Create having 48K. However, from a percentage standpoint the X360 difference is even greater: Famitsu has 3.2K while Media Create has 5.1K.

Thats a nice point for thought.
What would you prefer? A nice bump worth making a press release boasting it; or a raise of the base sales that help to reach your long term sales goals, no matter how flat they look compared to the competition?

Got the new Famitsu software data up, as well as the mid-year Top 100; it was easier to get the Top 30 out of the way first for purposes of new games and weekly ranks.

Plenty of new software groups tonight. A few all-new, but most are from me taking two pretty large groups and making sub-groups.

Tales of Phantasia
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Eternia
Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Rebirth
Tales of the Abyss
Tales of the World

Mario Baseball
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Mario Soccer - As someone pointed out in the Top 100 thread, Strikers Charged has taken the lead. I couldn't say if a reduced price or natural legs are the bigger factor, though.

Band Brothers
Derby Stallion

Opetoro "bump" has gone already.
