Media Create Sales: 9/10-9/16 2007

They're slumping, but it's nothing out of the ordinary. PS2 had similar numbers in this time of the year even at its early years.
people forget that before the DS, hardware sales went down when there was a lull in big games coming out for that system. that the DS has in the past not seen that happen is still out of the ordinary.

the Wii needs new software to push sales back up... same as anything else.

if these numbers are on the ball, great launch for the PSP slim. perfect storm of hardware and a killer title. if sony can follow up with some more killer titles the fight could be back on in the weekly charts (the DS has won LTD without question).

Easter is Over for the DS and Wii... :( sad

so when is the next Wabbit Season?

Man... wish Square gave PSP a chance before putting the majority of ports/remakes on DS.

Oh well, guess that evasive FF7 port could always come out :O

I guess it would have made the handheld war much closer

Yup.
Nintendo just didn't have anything big enough to carry the system through the really slow period (which is now). Wii Sports/Play and Mario Party 8 can only do so much.

I have no doubt that sales will dramatically pick up around/during the holidays when there are big titles + seasonal sales boost...

When can we see Media Create threads back to normal - meaning OP posting charts and all that good stuff

its kinda sad because PSP could have finally had its own PAC-MAN chart

well at least the Wii would be in stock since its selling low numbers now

This may sound crazy, but I think that might be the plan. It makes sense, and I don't think it's too tinfoil-hat thinking to consider that a planned lull in games might allow Nintendo to catch up to pre-holiday demand in preparation for the madness to come. If I were Sony, I wouldn't even be pondering Wii numbers (or even DS numbers for that matter.) I would be hoping to get a huge PS3 boost through the holiday and try to maintain around 30,000 - 40,000 per week at least through March while simultaneously staggering PSP software releases to maintain some sense of continuity until the crowd accepts the handheld as more than a media device.

When I get back from Japan. I'm in Okinawa right now.

I follow these Media Create threads weekly & I have noticed with alarm PSP sales have been rising steadily. Most posters including Myself expected the PSP to be dead now but look what's happened.
Well actually, PSP was in a strong and steady decline for over a month prior to the FF7CC PSP bump. (Moreso than Wii even, likely due to a combination of the slow period and anticipation of the PSP Slim.) This bump is indeed impressive, but I don't think many people expected it to be dead during the release of both a new version and one of it's biggest games since launch.

Crazy, like I said before PSPsoftware sales barely match this weeks PSPhardware sales. What are the other 5million PSP owner doing besides buying a redevisioned PSP. ;) Sony will be happy with this hardware sales but it seems that PSP sofware doesn´t benefit from it that much.

Well, MGS PO+ has done really, really well. Adding the original version numbers its really near 500k. I'm surprised that it has done >100k when we heard that 50k first day was like total soldout. Poor Crisis Core lost its small chances of hitting 1m with the legit data, I thought it'd pull stronger sales 2nd week with the impressive PSP new model sales. Not good starts for Strikers and Katana. Hitman surprise, is it the X360 version?

PS3 again very near 10k...and I don't see any title until November that can pull hardware sales. October is going to be long for PS3. 11/22 is the most important day for PS3 this year, you know, Winning Eleven 2008 and Shin Sangoku Musou 5, both million sellers on PS2, releasing on the same day on PS3 (WE also on PS2/360 that day, SSM5 on 360 too).

EDIT: oh wait hitman is an anime game for DS....:lol

I really think that PSP S&L launch perfectly timed with FFVII: CC and the absence of any relevant new game are hurting the Wii in Japan right now. The DS maybe it's reaching to the saturation point, don't know, but with the incredible line up it has for this christmas I don't think it's going to suffer a lot in the near future.

Wii has 2 huge Mario games for that period, but perhaps that couldn't be enough. The lack of announcements for 2008 in the Japan market could be damaging the console more than we though... or just not enough content in this moment of time. I don't know.

EDIT: could be the new PSP & FFVII: CC the new "fad" that makes Wii "old"? :D

Wow @ jarrods list. DS owns anything.
The lists should fill out some still, especially for December (Mingol P2, Smash Brawl, SC Legends, etc).

Overall DS does spank everything, but I'm a bit surprised at how weak the PSP Q4 follow up is (weaker than any of the consoles even imo)... I wonder if Sony didn't expect quite this much momentum out of the Slim and CC/PO+?

Nintendo has underestimated the power of Playstation. The price of NDS needs to be cut from 16800yen to 15000yen which is the price of DS Phat. More games are needed for Wii plus a black Wii console needs to be launched soon.

Congrats to Sony for bringing PSP back from the DEAD and kicking Nintendo's ASS in the process. Has Nintendo become arrogant???? I expect Iwata's response shortly:D

You're sounding like its Nintendo's "fault" that the PSP got such a boost and not the PSP FF:CC Special Edition + FF:CC + PSP Slim.

Amazing PSP sales, and very good CC:FF sales, but lower than expected for the amount of hw sold. It should get to ~800K pretty easily, and could sell a million, but it's going to need legs.

Strikers has sold poorly and will be lucky to break 100K, unless it gets some staying power as the end of year approaches. Housekeeping Diary is doing well and could be a big holiday gift.

I think the most interesting thing the recent Japanese charts have shown is the need for Nintendo's internally developed sw in Japan. 3rd parties can create games for specific markets, but, overall, are useless at bridging the gap the way Nintendo does to create the broad appeal, consistent system sellers, even though Nintendo has shown them the way, so to speak.

Without new titles from their internal teams their platforms stagnate, it really is that simple. Nintendo cannot rely on 3rd parties because they just don't get it, to the extent left to 3rd parties, market expansion wouldn't happen.

I think PS3 WE and DW could struggle. WE because it's available on PS2 and DW because that kind of gaming is continuing to decline. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see Nintendo release something big, like Wii Fit or SSBB, on Nov 22 to take the attention away from Sony as much as possible.

I don't think PSP Slim has given the system much momentum in sw sales. It looks like it's primarily selling to existing PSP owners, which is expected with every revision to an extent.

Also, I can't see CC:FF being any kind of incentive for developers because it's too specific a title. It's a new game, with a big budget, 2-3+ years in development and is based on a hugely popular PS1 franchise (within a franchise). Most developers will be put off by this rather than encouraged when DS sw sales are good for 3rd parties and the system is so much cheaper and quicker to develop on.

PSP is suffering from the same sw problems GC had, certain titles sell well, but overall sw sales are poor and the competition is much more viable. There's no question about PSP being a success, just not so much as a gaming handheld for UMD titles.

Do tell what this "Playstation philosophy" is. I'm all ears.

Indeed, it's not really a philosophy, what I was talking about is the cinematic nature of the PlayStation lead. All the hardware and "philosophy" behind it follow a path that goes along this cinematic ideal, which in my views have blended very well with Final Fantasy. And I believe it strays significantly from what Nintendo has traditionally aimed to achieve with their hardwares.

Funny how much can change in two weeks huh? Oh well.. I suppose everything will be "back to normal" soon. Very VERY impressive PSP sales though, far above what I expected which is good for PSP. It will be interesting to see how long this momentum boost will last though.

On a side note: DS sure has a killer holiday line-up looking at those release lists.

Famitsu Top 10 Sept 17-23:

1. [NDS] Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2
2. [PSP] Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7
3. [PSP] Metal Gear Solid PO +
4. [Wii] Mario Strikers Charged
5. [NDS] Katekyoo Hitman Reborn!!
6. [Wii] Mario Party 8
7. [PS2] Kiniro no Corda 2 Anchor
8. [PS2] Another Century's Episode 3: The Final
9. [PSP] Metal Gear Solid PO + (Deluxe Pack)
10. [NDS] Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - Ring of Fates

M-create will split the Pokemon Dungeons up, so they'll lose to Crisis Core.

I wonder how each individual Pokemon Dungeon will fare against MGSPO+

damn these poor games

11.01 Opoona (Koei)
11.01 Ace Combat 6: Kaihou e no Senka (BNGI)

they sent them to die hard

I dont think Super Mario Galaxy will have any effect on the Ace Combat 6 sales, atleast not anything noticeable. Opoona on the other hand, the salenumbers would probly sux for Koei for this game :(

Code Geass,Gurren Lagann,Cooking Mama 2,FFTA2,Mario Party and FFIV is more than enough to land a megaton blow to the PSP.

These games will sell decently and FF4 has a shot to sell as much as FF3 but nothing that I would call a system seller.

Code Geass and Gurren Lagann will sell like other (popular)Anime licensed games 80k-200k.

Cooking Mama 2 - lol this game selling power is really poor

FFTA2 will sell like it´s predecesor on GBA (around 400k-600k) but won´t move many DS units

Mario Party DS - these kind of games aren´t popular on handhelds, thanks to DS´s userbase it can reach 250k-400k regardless.

FF4 will sell best but FF3 level at best

So what will sell DSlites? The amount and diversity of titles by the end of year and not single games.

Not so certain about this remark. You're not shooting high enough I think.

As for PSP, great to see it boost, but a shame to see the dismal release list for it till the end of the year a.k.a. zero quality software. Maybe it is true that Crisis Core was essentially it's last AAA game in the eyes of many.. I'm dismissing Kingdom Hearts because I dislike that series as a whole and won't go near Silent Hill.

Next M-C thread later will be interesting. Izzy was banned today, and Tabris is as well from what I am recalling (though that was quite a few days ago - SaitoH reckons it's permanent); two of the biggest vocal supporters and they won't be able to register a blip in a thread that they would most likely deem the true resurrection of PSP and proclaim it here to stay and win.

Since Media Create list the 2 Pokémon games as 2 separate games FF will still be #1 on Media Create tho ;) (unless one of the Pokémon games sold more than FF of course).

This is reeeeeeeally dependent on supply. FF4 is, I suspect, a more popular game than FF3, and FF3 itself would have sold dramatically better had the supply been available for it to do so.
