I'm not really up on Japanese sales but I don't think the PSP ever had a 1+million week one game. You think that MH3 would be the first ?
Yes, expect a 1 - 2 million first week depending on how much Capcom ships. It is coming out in the winter also. It will be huge.

Pretty interesting it is going up against pokemon. Japan may see a loss of productivity that week.

Up to 2009-12-27 it was at 337,783. Incredible legs (given the circumstances).

Wii Sports also sold considerably under the hood. I guess one more week for NSMBWii to surpass it.

I don't know if bttb edited after you asked, but it's up to 03/28.

Games with a > 1.5m opening week:

Final Fantasys
Dragon Quests
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl

I really don't see MHP3 joining that list and certainly not 2 million. ;)

Monster Hunter Portable 3 will definitely do 1 million week one.
I don't think it's certain. MHP as a series is very similar to how certain Nintendo games sell, which is a good indication that the series is very successful and popular among mainstream audiences including kids and people who aren't particularly the type who are super hyped up to rush out and buy a game on the first day.

Certainly, it will do very well in the first week, and I doubt it'll sell less than 900k. Capcom will definitely ship over a million, like they did with MH3, but it doesn't mean it'll sell a million in the first week that easily. Ultimately, it means very little to the series, since it has never been particularly front loaded, and it keeps selling because the interest and appeal is there.

I can't see MHP3 doing less than 1.5 million in the first week. MHP2G didn't sell >1M in the first week only because Capcom didn't ship enough copies and now the franchise is more than twice as big as it was when that game launched.

MHP3 should be much more frontloaded.

Capcom's first week shipment:
~990K

MHP2G first week sales:
MC: 880K
Fam: 823K

Will MHP3 sell > 1 million first week? Possible, if not likely.
Is it definite? duckroll did a good job explaining why it's not definite and why it won't particularly matter in the long run.

That's weird. I though lack of supply was the reason MHP2G had one of the biggest 2nd week ever.
Going with MC's sales numbers, it still would've had 89% sell-through on the first week and needed a 400K second week shipment just to cover the sales that week. That indicates that supply wasn't flowing freely on that first week, at least.

Spiegel said:
Thanks for the correction, donny.
As pointed out by Chris1964 above, MC's estimated first week shipment was 7% less than Capcom's reported first week shipment. There may be some statistical worth in using MC's shipment estimate with MC's sales estimate, but the actual shipment according to Capcom was 0.99m.

But is it fair to expect Pokemon to come on top? I think it will, I also expect a higher first week.

Even for one version, maybe that too.

Didn't the previous pairs do over 1 Million for each version 1st week?
If Nintendo cleverly release the 3DS around the same time as Pokemon Black/White, and add 3DS enhancements to PB/W, then I think that will give both the 3DS and Pokemon itself a fairly large boost, which should be more than enough to push it past MHP3.

call me crazy, but i actually think MHP3 will outsell PKMN B&W in the long run. B&W might have a better first week, but i think MHP3 will have longer legs, ultimately outselling gen5.

When HG/SS sells more than 4 million is there any doubt that Black/White will sell more than 5 million, even without 3DS? Pokemon Co. has set D/P as sales target which means 5,5-6 million.

I remember the pokemon that was released in 2008 had a bigger first week than MHFU but that year MH went on to be the best selling game on all platforms and it sold better LTD than pokemon (Platinum?)

It sure will be an interesting period for the Japanese market.

There is always doubt, but yeah, it doesn't seem very likely. And someone posted above that expectations for MHP3 were 5 million. It could be close.

But it probably isn't going to be.

Would be interesting to see MHP3 outsell MHP2G. Don't think it'll happen, since few of Capcom's number 3 games do as well as the number 2. Incidentally though, MH3 is one of those few. :lol
What else besides RE2 are we talking about here? Rockman 2? Onimusha II? Certainly not Viewtiful Joe 2. I could see it happening with Lost Planet 2...

Biohazard 2 > Biohazard 3
Onimusha 2 > Onimusha 3
Devil May Cry 2 > Devil May Cry 3
Street Fighter II > Street Fighter III
Street Fighter Alpha 2 > Street Fighter Alpha 3
Rockman Zero 2 > Rockman Zero 3

Examples of the contrary:

Monster Hunter 3 > Monster Hunter 2
Rockman EXE 3 > Rockman EXE 2

This one's interesting.

Phoenix Wright 3 GBA > Phoenix Wright 2 GBA
Phoenix Wright 2 DS > Phoenix Wright 3 DS

They're pretty close to each other, but it is pretty true that PW3 brought the series' popularity forward. That said, how could I forget to list Phoenix Wright. :lol

Breath of Fire 3 could very well also be higher than Breath of Fire 2. BoF3 sold 420k or so lifetime, while BoF2 seems to have sold about 150k in 6-7 weeks before it vanishes off the charts.

As far as PW goes, only the GBA ones should count. Otherwise we'll have to start digging up sales for all ports and budget re-releases to compare too. :p

PW 3 selling more doesn't surprise me, it's the better game by far.

Though that doesn't always mean anything when it comes to sales, I mean, DMC2 over 3 is practically a hate crime.

Surprised as hell about Alpha 2 though as there are so many versions of Alpha 3.

The Saturn version of Alpha 2 sold 309,593 and the PS1 version sold 538,532. Alpha 2 PS1 is a bit above Alpha 3 PS1, but the Dreamcast, GBA and PSP versions of Alpha 3 had pretty lol-worthy sales.

Capcom is one of the few companies where we can actually have a serious discussion about "entry 3 selling more than entry 2", and have a wide range of franchises to compare sales with. :lol

The ability to have this discussion is a miracle considering the complications brought forth by the Capcom milk machine.

If/when MHP3rd outsells MHP2nd, but not 2nd G, does that count? :lol

Japan:

I would say yes. But if MHP3 outsells MHP2 (not 2G), then I think we should look to see if MHP3G will outsell MHP3 (and MHP2G). That will be a good indication of the sort of growth the series has.

This indicates to me that Atlus actually had difficulty restocking SJ, as opposed to them not being interested in shipping more copies. I bet using a 1gbit cart factored into their problems. The same thing happened with Infinite Space for Sega. It seems if you have a low print run for a 1gbit game, and demand is higher than expected, you can't immediately ship more as fast as you would need to capitalize on the demand.

demon's soul sold 280k in US alone? that's pretty high for the game.

how much did it sell in japan? 170k?

it sold almost 500k copies, not bad at all. factoring in a PAL release it should be able to reach 600k copies, possibly something more.

There's a very simple way to find out if it sold within expectations though. If Atlus publishes the next Shiren game stateside, you'll know it was a success! :lol

MHP is some whack phenomenon rarely ever seen in the industry. Every time its looks like growth have finally levelled off, it just keep out performing.

When MHP came out everyone barely noticed it and said it was a pokemon clone PS2 port. The series went out to be a surprise hit.

Then MHP2 came out and people were predicting it might make 1 million before budget release. The series grew to being one of the top 3rd party franchises in Japan.

Then MHP2G came out and most people didn't think it would outsell MHP2. I mean expansion+ rarely ever outsell the original. The series grew to become the 2nd biggest 3rd party franchise in Japan (Maybe the 2nd best selling 3rd party game ever in Japan too) and the best selling non-Nintendo, non S-E game ever.

Who knows what MHP3 could do. All I know is never underestimate a MH game on the PSP.

Pokemon will still destroy it though
