Media Create Sales: Week 20, 2012 (May 14 - May 20)

I understand that, but I didn't think a remake of a Game Boy spinoff game had this type of potential.

It's a Pokemon follower title that had withstood tests of time. Million ltd I would say is a good possibility. Biggest q is whether there will be sales synergy or cannibalism between it and Pokemon. Over the long term one will likely become a great second title for the other.

The fact that Terry's Wonderland 3D is a remake probably won't be a issue IMO. It's been revamped to the point that it's basically the next main entry in the DQM series.

Do we know if Terry's Wonderland remake will have any extra content over the original? I don't really remember much about the original game itself, but I do remember that its GBC sequel and the first DQM:J ds game ended a little too soon for my liking.

It'd be interesting to know what the tie ratio is for 2012, though. Most of last year, it was probably languishing ridiculously low, so it might've actually improved in 2012. May have to do some estimating later ...

Famitsu software from my database. MC hardware. Using Famitsu quarters by calendar, not FY. Should give a rough approximation, though. :)

Code:
             SW HW Tie Ratio
Q1-2011 788K 793K 0.99
Q2-2011 862K 365K 2.36
Q3-2011 943K 747K 1.26
Q4-2011 3779K 2179K 1.73
Q1-2012 3074K 1316K 2.34
Q2-2012* 1399K 555K 2.52

* - Through May 13, 2012

Not a single quarter has it hit the tie ratio of DS over its first 14 months, but at least it's improving. 2012 is much better than 2011, which is something.

It was one of the best spinoffs they ever made for it (IMO), and it brought different things to the table that Pokemon didn't at the time while still offering something that felt familiar.

A very enjoyable game.

[3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D (6 weeks) - 1,400,000
[PSV] Gundam Seed: Battle Destiny (3 weeks) - 69,000
[PSV] Persona 4: Golden (3 weeks) - 65,000
[PS3] Lollipop Chainsaw (4 weeks) - 35,000
[NDS] Pokemon Black 2 / White 2 (3 weeks) - 3,600,000
[PS3] Atelier Ayesha (1 week) - 96,000
[3DS] Culdcept (1 week) - 10,000

PSV

I'm actually going to quote this again to ask... this is really accurate? Because I hadn't realized it when posting last night, but if it is, this suggests an attach rate of slightly less than 1, which I've never heard of before. So either digital is becoming a shockingly big thing for the Vita in Japan, or... well, things look rather bleak.

I have to think every Vita owner's purchased at least one or two games for the damn thing, though. That software number just seems ludicrously low compared to the number of units out there.

Attach rates are always low at the beginning. Conditions of used games in Japan are also so good that it's not uncommon for people to buy only used games w/ a system purchase.

That is based on data publicly available from Famitsu and does not include all software sales for the Vita or the PSP (not to mention zero digital sales).

The real tie ratio probably isn't any better, over 1 and below 2 I guess, given even the 3DS is barely above 2.

FGH 2012 sample: http://www.f-ism.net/fgh/fgh2012_sample.pdf

It has some sell-through for Rhythm Heaven Wii and Tales of Xillia.

And from the genre breakdown percentages 2011 total software was ~51.34 million (+/- 56k).

Errr... this doesn't sound right. But still, nice to see a game a lot of people really want. :)

A bit off topic, but is there a good chance of this coming outside of Japan?
Other than the other DQM games, there's nothing else to really compare it to. The only difference between FF7 and this game is that one is a spin-off and the others not, but since the original sold so much, the fact that its a spinoff doesn't really hamper its selling potential.

Yeah, as others said, digital isn't represented here... And without it, it really looks bleak. I really wonder what the numbers are, but sadly we'll probably never know them. :(

What are the expectations for Dragon's Dogma?

I think it will likely open higher than White Knight Chronicles (203,033), no other console new rpg IP has had a biggest opening in this generation. If we go back to the PS2 era, only Rogue Galaxy (213,289) and Kingdom Hearts (411,492) had better numbers than White Knight Chronicles. So it won't be too hard for Dragon's Dogma to become the best-selling console new rpg IP debut since 2002.

Best-selling console new rpg IPs of this generation (first week sales):

[PS3] White Knight Chronicles - 203,033
[PS3-360] Resonance of Fate - 155,013
[Wii] The Last Story - 109,704
[360] The Last Remnant - 102,107
[360] Infinite Undiscovery - 86,708
[360] Blue Dragon - 82,286
[Wii] Xenoblade - 79,163
[PS3] Valkyria Chronicles --- 77,694

Edit: Added The Last Remnant (thanks gogogow)

Calling Dark Souls a new IP is kinda stretching it. Of course, technically it is, but everyone and his dog knew that it's the (spiritual) sequel to Demon's Souls. Actually, if you don't study the circumstances surrounding the game closely, you almost definitely don't know that Dark Souls is not the official sequel to Demon's Souls.

I guess you can be technically right, it is debatable. I saw Dark Souls as a sequel of Demon's Souls but their developers said that it wasn't a sequel to Demon's Souls, but rather a spiritual successor.

By the way, Famitsu has it quite lower than Media Create (228,872) that was a huge discrepancy. Anyway they both have a similar LTD sales figure (Famitsu 334,302, Media Create 353,549).

Also, seeing the Top 1000:

What are the odds of DKCR surpassing the 1 million mark?? It's pretty close, and last year it sold around 300k units.

Practically nil since Nintendo will probably not ship more copies.

According to Famitsu it only sold 23,523 units in the second-half of 2011, whereas in the first-half of the year it sold 368,529.

We may get an idea of how digital sales affect retail when 3DS games start appearing on the eShop. Speaking of which, did anyone ever try to analyze how PSN affected retail PSP software sales?

The ones sold directly through the eShop cannot be, since Nintendo won't reveal those numbers. The ones bought through a card at a store may be, though. Wondering if Nintendo will mention the total numbers (eShop + retail) in their FY reports...

Is Gundam Seed Battle Destiny a very low key title? A lot of people(myself included but I pretty much just put a random number) have it doing barely better or worse than Ciel No Surge... I know Gundam doesn't always mean good sales but I remember people talking about it like it was a bigger deal.

I have no idea if it's a Gundam Battle game or a Gundam Seed game, but it's a Vita game.

It's holding *remarkably* well, I thought with so many new games this week it'd be out for sure.

Edit: Although these are Famitsu numbers, and they've deviated a bit from MC, better not make too many assumptions just yet.

What's the longest an FE has remained in the top ten for? In fact, other than the big three, I can't think of any other game that's hung around for quite so long in a fair while - maybe Revelations?

The last game to spend 6 consecutive weeks in the top 10 was IEGo Shine / Dark (7 in fact). And the last non combined is MH3G, there since it has been released -- 25 weeks.
