Sony launched the PS4 late in Japan signaling to everyone that the west was the priority and they were aware Japan is not their main base. I am sure capcom was aware when they green lit monster hunter world that the system was popular in the west and wanted to use the opportunity to see if they can strengthen the brand overseas. there is no way they are caught by "surprise" that PS4 isn't selling gang busters in Japan and are regretting the system choice at this moment.

From the new thread posted by Nirolak, it seems clear that this is a mainline title and there is no "mh for Japan" at the moment and that this is the next generation. The guy that hinted the monster hunter world name before the reveal also rubbished the 4chan rumors so looks like mh platform discussions will continue to be entertaining.....

I didn't see anything dramatic happening, either for the sales of the game at west or for any potential patch.

I'm not sure how that's relevant? You said Nintendo doesn't make PR announcements, when they clearly do.

Edit:

Oh, maybe you think I think Metroid Prime 4 exists because of bad feedback, when what I meant is that they announced it earlier than they would have normally because of bad feedback.

Starting 4-5 years ago and still not out means the game recently found its final form and was just on paper before, if it was aiming 3DS.

Gung-Ho is making a new Switch game.

It's a new IP, is all ages and cartoony, is an action game, has singleplayer and multiplayer, and was originally not a Switch game (since it started 4-5 years ago, presumably as a 3DS game?): http://gematsu.com/2017/06/gungho-online-entertainment-switch-action-game-ages-development

“No direct comparison exists,” Morishita said. “It’s a gameplay style that has not been seen before.”

Hmm... The fact this took 5 years probably means they had to keep refining the gameplay or that they're not sure it will be appealing.

ps4 sales are pretty disappointing if you consider how successful it is ww

pretty much the opposite of the 3ds where japan sales are great compared to its performance ww

it'll be interesting to see how much switch sales in japan help its performance ww compared to the ps4

not too surprising, they've done pretty well on 3ds

hope the fact they're taking so long means they're putting quality as a priority rather than development hell

so basically they changed the platform to the switch at the very last moment

It would presumably be a game that was in the prototyping stage (most likely on and off) for a very long time before actually entering production, so it's even plausibly something not coming out for quite a while.

Like Ubisoft has been trying to get a Mario x Rabbids game off the ground since the Wii era, but they only now have one coming out, and that didn't start actual development all that long ago.

i dont think the announcement of the new pokemon game in dev for switch rules out the possibility of a stars port/version

they're gonna want to release something early next year because the next mainline for switch will take some time imo just because developing for switch will require a big uptick in development time/effort, especially in the graphics department

Pokemon for Switch won't be any graphical showcase and releasing again S/M versions a few months after US/UM is worse decision than Capcom's.

Capcom has told Dengeki that Monster Hunter World was originally called Monster Hunter 5, but they decided they preferred the name World (presumably because it was more accessible to Western audiences who had never heard of the series before): http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1spuvtg (http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/001/538/1538583/)

Given the rest of the information updates, I think we can pretty safely say this is the next mainline entry.

Capcom also told watch.impress (they're a Japanese industry site) that they're not currently planning a Switch version: https://twitter.com/BannedDino/status/874880770199965697 (http://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/interview/1065192.html)

Isn't this technically Monster Hunter 6? I'm aware that Monster Hunter X is part of the mainline entries... Or is it part of the Freedom series?

So does that mean no more MonHun games for Switch after XX? I wonder what has happened between Capcom and Nintendo

Yup US/UM seems to me to prioritise short term profit over long term brand building/maintenance.

Why would they stop making MH games for Switch? I mean, if it was called MH5 at some point, doesn't that sort-of give even more credibility to the original 4chan's rumour, the one that stated how Switch will still get more traditional games and how XX is a way to prepare the audience?

The past few days here on GAF have been full of idiocy and fanxiety of different kinds, urgh.

I would be surprised if there's ever a "Monster Hunter 5" at this point, especially if they want to run parallel series without either seeming like a subordinate series.

Quite a few parts of that are wrong though.

There's no limited weapons, it's not fully open world, there's an Xbox version, there are seemingly still missions, and there's definitely still gathering and preparation.

How does XX Switch, with all the 'good' stuff around it (special edition console, cross play with 3DS, save transfers etc) make any sense when they were planning on pushing forward with 5 on PS4?

I guess this is the Switch's 'RE4:Wii Edition' while it got no RE5. Monster Hunter Chronicles light gun test game incoming.

I know, right.

Like when I stepped in the Monster Hunter World trademark thread, I was convinced that MHW was a shitty western MMO-something spin-off and the real MH5 belongs to Nintendo consoles or something.

It makes perfect sense if you consider it as a way to prepare the ground for games from a more "traditional" subseries coming to Switch. Why are people having such a difficult time in getting the concept of two main subseries running at the same time with different focuses, no seriously XD

Even if a new Switch entry is called Monster Hunter 5 it would to me not indiciate it is more mainline than Monster Hunter World. Monster Hunter 5 would just help push Japan sales, and it makes sense to use the name for a portable entry: Monster Hunter 5 name doesn't help anything to push sales in the west.

It also makes sense from the "oh crap, X underperformed we need to get those sales somehow" perspective.

I do agree that with you though that there will be other MH titles on the Switch.

Well I don't care if the "traditional" sub series stays in Japan.

I just have to say that the reaction from Nintendo fans is hilarious in the Monster Hunter thread.

So Capcom keeps the series exclusive to Nintendo for ages and no one bats an eye. Then they announce Monster Hunter World for PS4/XBO/PC with western release and somehow everyone is up in arms about it, going as far as to say that they are now done with the series. I love all the salt :D

I do think XX needs to be localized for the Switch though, so hopefully that comes through at a later date. But it is most likely not happening until World releases first.

I'm extremely curious to see how this game does in Japan.
The official website lists only PS4 and PS4 Pro version in Japan so I don't think they will bother with Xbox One there.

You act as if the salt is related to Worlds when most salt is in fact related to the lack of XX localisation which is 100% ok to be upset about. Come on now.

I think it's pretty telling when every interview and marketing piece for the game in Japan emphasizes on the GLOBAL importance of this title. It's almost like they're hanging up a huge sign saying "YO READERS THIS GAME IS NOT REALLY FOR YOU!" or something.

And it's just going to make them look even sillier in retrospect when MHW doesn't sell any better than MH4U in NA/EU.

Seems pretty odd for franchise that's biggest in Japan either way this lines up with the rumours so MH 5/p is mostly probably coming to the switch and will be announced shortly after this comes out.

It will sell better no doubt the question is it it reaches the 4.1 million shipped MH normally meets otherwise it could very well end up being a gigantic waste of time and resources.

It's clear from all the feedback we got that the focus is the same as before for MHW in terms of gameplay.

Portability remains really the only differentiating factor for a possible switch version.

The rumor is mostly trash. You can discard it. It got quite a bit wrong.

I do think there's a difference here considering a MH game has already been announced for Switch then again WiiU also got MH so it's by no means an absolute indication of future support :p

There are a few uncertainties about World. We know given sales history on consoles in Japan that this will very likely not pull numbers comparable to the portable installments, and we also know that it's up to the game showing considerable growth in the West for this to be a worthwhile investment. I think if that happens, MH could simply consolidate on the home console platforms as we saw with the 3DS the past few years.

But they obviously have an insurance in case that doesn't happen as Portable MH is still very much a big deal in Japan.

I feel like you must have missed a few GAF threads.
I have seen the original reveal thread where people where trying to label it as spin-off. The reaction when it was confirmed to be mainline and the next Monster Hunter was pretty telling.

We had pages after pages of long discussion on whether the next mainline Monster Hunter will hit PS4 and looks like it did. Although I haven't checked this thread since the reveal.

I mean if a game is already mostly localised and not getting localised for business reasons then I think most people here would agree it is perfectly fine to be upset, but if you think otherwise then that's fine.
I agree that XX not being localized is a strange move from Capcom but XX is a spin-off and World is the next big Monster Hunter game, can you guess which one takes precedent for them?

I do see XX getting Western release sometime later in 2018 though.
