Media Create Sales: Week 30, 2013 (Jul 22 - Jul 28)

I wonder if the art direction and setting were the main problem with Soul Sacrifice considering how well advertised it was and what the sales were in the end.

Toukiden "clicked" off the bat.

SCE is also terrible at selling their own games in Japan when most publishers do just fine on Sony systems.

What's funny is there's no discrepancy between famitsu and MC for Lego numbers, which indicates there was no demand for download cards.

Which also explains why even with a discount, Pikmin was in a position above Lego on the eshop ranking.

Anyway, i find this result to be good and hope to see even better numbers for the wonderful things to come.

With the exception of Animal Crossing: New Leaf due to supply issues, download cards sales on Nintendo systems have been really marginal. Even Pokemon Scramble U which is a download-only card game sold very few units.

In response to this, Nintendo has announced Princess Peach is getting a new character design in the next Mario & Luigi game.

It was released two weeks ago and when it's all said and done it will be on par with other M&L games.

A true bomba.

EDIT: You edited your post with "bomb", of course. the drama

It had a poor debut and massive shipment for sure, but can we please look at the overall picture? M&L games usually sell around 400k. BIS is the only game to sell 700k.

The difference is that this entry will need the help of most of the retailers (dropping the price) to reach that number.

I can't believe the worst Ace Attorney sold that well.

There was a lot of momentum leading to its release with the re-releases of all the previous AA games. It was bound to do well. This is why AA5 matching it somewhat surprises me, as it didn't have that kind of build up, but we'll see if it can also match the legs of AA4.

Has that happened yet? I imagine this will be like a Zelda: ST/Ninokuni DS situation where the help of bomba bins will eventually make the LTD look good. Probably won't get a second shipment though :(

I think it's like 170K for Demon's Souls and 330K for Dark Souls (I may be off a little bit).
I think that's about right for the vanilla SKUs.

The "beginning" is usually also the "end" for Level-5 sales in general. :p

Their products suck, and no one gives a fuck anymore. The only people even buying their stuff anymore are kids who don't know any better, and even those numbers are drastically reduced. It's over for Hino's scam empire really.

Been out of the loop for a while. What did level 5 do?

Probably retailers will wait until obon is finished. On Obon some sales improves (August 13-15th). That way they can sell the maximum of copies at full price. Then, bomba bins.

Lol ok i've probably badly worded my thoughts but what i mean is simply that in certain case, for some developers, and certain type of games, vita can be a wise and profitable choice. Even better than 3ds in some case where the game could be less exposed or have more competition on it!

Nothing that shocking about it!

That's miles away from what you said before.

With the save transfer tool available, wonder how many Animal Crossing owners with long-term commitment to the game are rebuying the game digitally, transferring their save, and then selling the cartridge?

That's an interesting hypothesis. It would explain some of those sales...

It could also be some kind of promo on download cards too.

Some updates on Sega in Japan and PSO2 on Vita:

Gamasutra said:
Net sales were also up by 29.6 percent to 90.7 billion yen ($923.6 million), propped up considerably by digital. Japan-only smartphone title Puyopuyo!! Quest surpassed 2 million downloads as of June, while Phantasy Star Online 2 for PlayStation Vita passed 500,000 copies from combined packaged retail and digital downloads.
Source: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/197354/Sega_reports_profits_up_400_percent_digital_delivers.php

They put up a trailer for more updates for PSO2, so it seems that is still getting heavily supported as well.

And again, proof that Vita is already a good system to release games on it for a jap dev. The fact that Vanillaware can actually sell more of a new ip than any other in their history, on massively more popular systems..

Of course haters will tell me "but it's cause an hardcore group is buying the game cause it's the only game on the console" except it was teh same for Tokiden and Soul Sacrifice. Those 3 new ips sold more than many popular games on 3ds actually.

Anyway Vita is a healthy market in Japan, that you want it or not. It's right now as smart, or even smarter to dev a game on Vita than on 3ds in Japan.

You know many people, including me, still take offense to the word 'jap', especially non-capitalized.

As for your premise, considering that the 3DS has multiple 3rd party games over 500K and the Vita is yet to have any (as far as I know, please correct me), coupled with the fact that Tokiden, Soul Sacrifice, and Dragon's Crown all do cater to similar, if not the same, markets, I think it's too early to say it's smarter to develop a game on the Vita, unless it is targeting the same general market.

Hcoregamer00

The 'H' stands for hentai.
So happy that GS5 sold as well as GS4 with such a huge gulf between releases.

I am hoping that we get a new trilogy for the 3DS, GS5,6,7. Please make it happen!! I don't want gigantic droughts like we had after Ace Attorney 4 :(

I am surprised that Dragon's Crown on VITA managed to sell close to PS3 version

We are talking about a userbase of 10 million vs a userbase of 1.6 million. In any case, i am happy for Vanillaware :D

And nice debut for AA5, i certainly wasn't expecting it to match AA4. Capcom is in deep sh*t these days so they need all the help they can get.

I don't think dragons crown targets the same market as hunting games and you also left out the current (soon to be overtaken) 2 best selling vita games in miku and persona which also each target different genres.

His post was terribly worded for what he was trying to say though

I was the only one even close on Little Battlers. I have to thank duckroll for spreading me his justifiable hatred and contempt for Level 5 over these past several years, his wisdom led to my accurate prediction.

Not really. Given all the adverts I have seen for it on Fuji TV recently and the localisation costs 18K is atrocious. I can't imagine Nintendo being happy with that.

Considering it's sell through rate according to Famitsu (60%~80%), they can't have been expecting much more for its first week.

The last (and only other Lego game in Japan that I've heard of) had a LTD of 20K on the PS2.

Probably, not definitely.

PS is not a million seller, it's just as big as GE, so it shouldn't have a problem hitting the 500k target on Vita.
Yea and they could reuse the same exact engine/assets as PSO2 vita.

Sure, but why would it happen when PSO2 largely fills the niche that the PSPo series once occupied?

Isn't that game online only? Not sure why a online only game on a handheld where people actually play them outside of the house would feel that niche. Plus free money, they could reuse the same exact engine/assets as PSO2 vita.

But Pikmin had a difference of almost 10k between the trackers. That's a big difference considering that Lego had no such discrepance at all!

It's a shame the retailers had such little faith in Dragon's Crown.
With larger shipments, we could have seen first week sales of 200-250k.

Good on Atlus though, for finding another success.

EDF had about 11k difference (once you add up the skus on famitsu). The higher the numbers the more error is likely.

I've heard first hand that this is very much the case. Vita has proven itself as a sustainable platform and with lower entry costs than 3DS, it is a much more viable option for small to mid-size devs. Vita is definitely alive and well in Japan.

Fair enough. In that case I am surprised Nintendo have been pushing it as much as they have.

Why are you surprised, lol. It's not like they have any games for Wii U so they gotta focus on what they have. They should've given Wonderful 101 more exposure though. Poor Kamiya needs more recognition.

Yeah, TW101 has a really fancy website, and it's been getting plenty of news updates recently both from Nintendo's and Platinum's ends, but while that's all fine and dandy for getting people excited, it's not informing people it exists. :\
