If it was Tales of Phantasia I don't see why Bamco would've missed the Switch launch window, these kind of titles worked because they were there early and there wasn't any other titles to buy on retail.

Non previously localized 2D Tales would cost too much to release outside Japan, the age of 2D Tales is done and it was said not less than 9 years ago with the release of Hearts, there could be some leftovers but I wouldn't hold my breath on anything noteworthy.

Tales of Symphonia was already rereleased not so long ago, the product wouldn't have much appeal either, especially on western markets where the majority of their sales comes from now.

The title that makes more sense is stil by far Tales of Vesperia, it was highly requested to the point of joke in the west, it's one of the most popular title in Japan that has kept selling ever since its release (just look at the last Media Create CY, it's still there), next year is the title 10th anniversary and it's still visually an appealing enough product for the market (it's still far from something like Ninokuni 2 by the same publisher though)

Like Symphonia it has aged on a gameplay point of view, but nos as badly, a Switch/PS4 release in Japan could sell decently (somewhere between 150-300k) while on western markets the added PC release would satisfy nearly everyone.

Since spin-off are officially over (the mobile titles Link, Asteria and Rays took that spot) and a new mothership title is ouf of the equation (unless in a very highly unlikely scenario a separate team worked on a new title on UE4 way before the release of Berseria) it's hard to imagine any other scenario than the ones listed above and one does seem to stand above the others in terms of likelyhood.

Two others stupid scenarios I can think of
- Digital only releases of older titles (but I don't think that would get listed in their planning in the first place)
- Some kind of remixes of a mobile title (especially Rays), but that would be too much effort for uncertain results from both a quality and sales point of view (eg. Reve Unitia, a mess of a game that two years later still hasn't sold its 100k shipment on 3DS)

I'm surprised Bandai Namco hasn't done anything for the 20th anniversary of Tales of Destiny given it's popularity.

Underperforming massively overshipped badly reviewed titles don't have sequels.
minus Gaist Crusher (is the game good ->?)

@Sandfox : You mean the popularity that ended as half the sales of a usual Tales of when they tried to make a full remake with a proper budget in 2006?
It's also still a 2d title in its roots and they gave up on these titles.

I would say the PS2 Destiny games did decent for what they were.

I don't think they are afraid to tinker with the 2D games these days, but the results have been bad lol.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you I don't think them not making 2D games anymore is a reason as to why a port of a legacy 2D title is a problem for them. I don't think anyone would think they're making 2D-style games again or something...

If one of their incentives for a port is a western release of something that hasn't gotten one before, none of their remaining choices are going to be particularly low-cost efforts. Even Vesperia PS3 has its own pretty large chunk of content that has to be translated+voiced, and at least one character's VA that would probably be replaced and redone.

I mean I don't know what they're planning or how much they're investing in whatever this Switch game is, just that there isn't really anything left where they can do what they did with Symphonia HD and have it work nearly as well.

Ahah, tend to forgot these ones too :p

Are you talking about Tales of Destiny or Tales of Destiny & its sequel?

They did something not so long ago anyway, a pachinko!

And no Tales of Destiny Remake didn't do fine, it was a failure and they had to rerelease the game one year later with a few extra contents to try to recoup the loss (and it sold 150k)

Tales of Destiny 2 (PS2, 28 novembre 2002) : 977.000
Tales of Symphonia (PS2, 22 septembre 2004) : 486.000 (was released on GC one year prior and sold in the 350k range)
Tales of Rebirth (PS2, 16 décembre 2004) : 605.000
Tales of Legendia (PS2, 25 août 2005) : 397.000 (outsourced entry with a bad rep and low budget)
Tales of The Abyss (PS2, 15 décembre 2005) : 734.000
Tales of Destiny (PS2, 30 novembre 2006) : 395.000

Even Vesperia PS3 has its own pretty large chunk of content that has to be translated+voiced, and at least one character's VA that would probably be replaced and redone.

I mean I don't know what they're planning or how much they're investing in whatever this Switch game is, just that there isn't really anything left where they can do what they did with Symphonia HD and have it work nearly as well.
Symphonia HD was based on the PS2 version that also had extra contents that were not translated before (although slightly less than Vesperia PS3 compared to Vesperia 360) so that's not so different.

Did one of the original seiyuu died?
They had to deal with that with Dhao's seiyuu beforehand, that's an extra investment but nothing that should prevent releasing a game.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you I don't think them not making 2D games anymore is a reason as to why a port of a legacy 2D title is a problem for them. I don't think anyone would think they're making 2D-style games again or something...
You're not, but if they just wanted to do a straight low effort port of a 2D entry the timing would have been better around launch window, it's not impossible mind but it would be weird at this point and sales potential would be minimal outside japanese market.

It's also odd how this game is supposed to release in six months or less and we haven't heard anything so far, either because it's fucking nothing (hello phantasia) either it's held off for some conference/direct or something.

Damn, Chris1964 really nailed down that Ever Oasis prediction.

... Another reminder of the flop that game was. Such a shame, but not really unexpected.

Most people are expecting a port/remake of a 360/PS3 game...i wouldnt call that "damn optimistic"....

I thought Destiny remake did fine considering it was a remake. Of course Phantasia PS1 did a lot better as a remake but is that really a fair comparison given the context of that release?

But...maybe there's a point. Hearts went on to underperform and that was it for 2D Tales, unfortunately. They didn't even bother remaking Hearts in 2D.

Regarding Tales on Nintendo systems I'm not that optimistic. While Bamco supports Nintendo systems well enough, after releasing Abyss on 3DS and admitting it exceeded expectations Baba just said "Well its cool, but the real fanbase is on PlayStation and we can't disappoint them!" While its true, if I were Bamco I would have ported Destiny or Symphonia for a quick buck.

But maybe they changed their stance after porting several games to Steam and pleasing only one fanbase.

Putting Tales of Games on PS4/Switch will be a bit easier than trying to get the PS3/PS4 games to run on 3DS. There was a market on Nintendo systems but the 3DS just couldnt support those games anymore and Bamco wanted to expand the reach of the series via PS4/PC.
It more optimistic vs mine Reve Unitia 2 prediction lol.
True...lol.

They could have ported Symphonia to 3DS instead of doing the HD remaster and it probably would have been more successful.

Blazblue and Story of Seasons off the top of my head.

I thought Destiny remake did fine considering it was a remake. Of course Phantasia PS1 did a lot better as a remake but is that really a fair comparison given the context of that release?
No Destiny Remake did not do fine, it had the same treatment and budget as any other mothership title on PS2 and sold around half as much.

After releasing Abyss on 3DS and admitting it exceeded expectations
That statement was taken without context so many times but it's still false regardless, the only expectation they shared on Tales of the Abyss was 250k for Japan (which was an absurd amount) and it never reached 200k.
In Europe the game had a very limited print that it managed to sell out quickly, thus "beating expectations" I guess which is what a EU Bamco PR said, but in the end it's not like it sold very well either, in France for example 10k copies were sold while Tales tend to sell ~30k usually (Vesperia, Symphonia DotNW, Xillia, Graces F)

Overall ~220k copies were sold in western markets which is a fine result and put it on the same league as almost all other entries (Vesperia 270k, Symphonia DotNW 230k, Tales of Graces 190k, Tales of Xillia 320k).

That one is unrealistic though.

Baba's no longer with Bandai Namco though, so who knows what will change.

Prediction League July 2017 Results

Congratulations to:

- thestopsign, for winning by units!
- thestopsign, for winning by mean error %!
Awesome! I don't do prediction leagues that often considering how long I've been involved in Media-Create, feels good to win one. Thanks for doing this Bruno.

This thread is being replaced now, but I will say Vesperia PS3 added/changed a lot more than Symphonia PS2 does and I wouldn't say it's slightly less. There's new playable characters, attacks, locations, items, dialogue scenes, events, skits, and a few rewritten scenes and skits. It'd be harder to just translate but not have VA for the new content to keep costs down (assuming they'd keep English voices in), because there'd be randomly unvoiced content in all kinds of stuff and it'd look really weird.

Symphonia PS2 doesn't really add too much in the way of newly written or voiced content, and because the skits weren't voiced to begin with, they could easily not voice any new ones in the HD port that may have been added. I'm not even sure why they didn't localize the PS2 release to begin with since it would have been a pretty easy effort for relatively popular game at the time...

And I was mainly talking about Yuri's English VA, haha. :p
