It looks like it was released somewhat early in the system's lifecycle. It's not a huge discrepancy so I imagine that might have something to do with it given the number of used copies that should be available as later buyers came in.
I seem to recall DQV was also criticized at the time for it's visuals. I'm not sure if that impacted sales ior not but it was described as looking like a more colorful Famicom game and was dissapointing when compared to Square's efforts releasing then (Romancing SaGa, FFV, Secret of Mana).

DQXI a single player RPG? Didn't know that.

...If that's the case, I don't know why it'd be for PS4, then. The console probably won't have the installed base for DQXI selling 3 millions in Japan, and surely it's not aimed at the West.
DQXI would give the PS4 a huge boost and have a positive effect on the entire Japanese console industry, and it would also help their other games considering SE are releasing FF15, KH3, DQH, and future FF's on PS4.

And by the time DQXI is released in 2016 who even knows how well the 3DS will be doing or if the successor will be out.

I think for story driven RPGs it's pretty much one or the other. If it's not a MMO, multiplayer is significantly less meaningful. A game could support it, but the core focus would still be the single player experience.
DQIX did feel like the focus had been taken away from the single player experience though, even though it was still obstensibly story driven. Party members as mindless robots to enable customisable multiplayer experiences and a lesser focus on the story compared to previous iterations.

I hope no one thought that the president of Sony Japan would fall over himself and make a huge deal at the end of a conference just for a spinoff DQ. The only question that remains is whether it is going to be ps4 exclusive or multiplat with ps3 or any nintendo systems. I personally think it is going to be ps4 exclusive considering ffxv and kh3 are going to be on new systems only. I guess Xbox one is a strong possibility as well if they consider global audience unless Sony signed a deal to help bring the title overseas along with marketing deal in exchange for exclusivity.

I laughed when the first thing the new SCEJA president said to Horii on stage was "Welcome home." He was so excited and happy.

All those games need not to sell at least 3.5m.
And DQXI has to ? DQX just sold about a million and its still a mainline title. DQXI will be their big anniversary titles and Horii want to recreate a single player experience on console ala DQ8. Betting on Sony consoles seems like the right thing to do, WiiU is a failure and the Xbox irrelevant.

Investors cant and wont do shit because SE made sure that they have their content in growing markets like mobile in space before announcing their big exclusive console games. They arent nearly as depended on one system as before and even DQXI PS4 will probably run on other devices via stream a couple of months after its release.

While I'm not going to do every game since that's a bit time consuming and they usually get threads or information in the thread anyway, would people still like me to cover the newer mobile games (especially the bigger ones) as they get announced?

I ask since I notice some previews are starting to come out about what people actually showed off in TGS conferences on the mobile front, since most places focused on console game reporting at the actual time.

I might do a slightly different format since I can't read Japanese and some of these are probably better explained in a different format. I can try to do a more informative job with less titles to boot.
Since I dumped this right in the middle of the every popular and fast moving Dragon Quest XI platform debate, I just wanted to double check that there was no interest.

I definitely understand if there isn't, given we rarely get sales numbers and very few people play them (or for a lot of titles, even can due to localization), but in case it got buried in the rush I felt I should ask one more time.

Mmh...why not? :p

Btw, for those curious: the only new announcement from the latest Famitsu's issue is that Kamen Raider Skylander-thing for PS3 and Wii U. December 4th.

I'd be interested in info about proper, non-predatory releases.

Are there many mobile releases that are just big, chunky games, without a ridiculous amount of IAP?

Back before DQ9 was announced, what was the platform gaf/everyone assumed it would be on?
PS3/Wii I think.

Square Enix Station 4.

I wonder what the reaction would've been had FFX, Kingdom Hearts and DQVIII all been announced for Dreamcast or Gamecube instead?
Wait are you equating Ps4 to Gamecube and Dreamcast?

This is what FFXIV does so incredibly well. It incorporates a very well done SP storyline into the MMO experience.

Game is so good

Any future MMO's to the PS4 need to just copy/paste the FFXIV controller format. Its flawless

Ha ha, I somehow missed that. Kinda "arrogant" for him to say that when Dragon Quest has only been "at home" on a PS console for 2 mainlines games out of 10 :p

But yeah, it's pretty clear all this wouldn't be happening without Sony involvement. Guess they learned their lesson from the PS3.

Well, in Japan it's sold a little better than DC but a little worse than GC. Does that sound like a platform really capable of supporting an exclusive mainline DQ?
May be a tad premature with that comparison lol

2015 will be a pretty good indication of how Japan is going to react to the system. With all the games hitting over the year.

I am quite sure SQEX would like to expect nothing less from a mainline DQ, in particular if developed for PS4.

Is that the extent of your analysis. Let me guess they should probably make it for Wii U or 3DS? Are you expecting Ps4 sales to still be behind Dreamcast and Gamecube in 2016?

Even best case from most have the system selling less than Wii or PS3 lifetime, neither of which had a single player DQ.

I guess Capcom and Level 5 are going to enjoy having the #1 and #2 3rd party sellers this gen on traditional platforms.

Wii U isn't any better than PS4. One failure to another. Throw Vita on that pile too.

It should be a 3DS game. That's the only platform this gen that can support 3m+ sellers.

Most of those games will be on the PS3 or the Vita as well. With declining console sales, there is no way DQXI for PS4 exclusively would make sense.

I could see 3DS/PS3/PS4/WiiU/Xbox1 happening though.

Eh,
I could see PS4 getting a main DQ exclusively. It wouldn't be that big a thing to me considering the Square games already coming. And there could be dealings to get it exclusive too.

DQXI will definitely be on PS4 as I said previously, but there's no way they'll ignore handheld/mobile either, new 3ds has a bit more power, so streaming to it will be more possible and since its a single player, there shouldn't be any problems with it, not as much as an mmo like DQX did. They're already building the fanbase on 3ds/mobile and now the PS4 with DQ heroes, I see that as them saying all 3 platforms are important.

Only question will be whether it'll be exclusive or not at release, exclusivity at first improves the chance of double dip, but with a game like DQ that will be negligible, so I think multiplatform simultaneous release will be far more likely. I also think the chance of exclusivity on release also increases depending on whether which platform sells the most in the new few years.

Not only is this not the normal developer-publisher relationship because Koei Tecmo is itself a publisher, but there's also a brand crossover here. It's really more like Mario & Sonic Olympics or Pokémon Conquest than it is a purely contracted game like Wonderful 101 or Metroid: Other M.

I'd agree KT likely has significantly more leeway than the usual contracted developer but that's more to do with who they are and what they bring than it is any deficit on Nintendo's part. And I'm not sure they even bring enough bargaining power to really have "the upper hand" either.
I think the musou style/gameplay warrants them some leeway in regards to their portion of the profits. Nintendo publishing it in the west doesn't change that, since its still a Zelda title and having the Nintendo logo on it makes more sense than KT.

what i'm saying is that wii u is a last gen console

No. I just think awarding Hyrule Warriors as having the best Warriors debut this gen is a bit pointless when the competition is a bunch of late ports. When you compare the game to all Warriors post-2012, its sales aren't the best.
Musou in general has declined so much, its pretty worthless to point out which platform or version of musou is selling best since they're all selling pretty bad.

KT should focus on getting a good musou out on the PS4, since its really the only reasonable choice moving forward.

Is that certainty from the same place which convinced you that Frontier Gate is a Monster Hunter game and that Criminal Girls Vita is an Imageepoch game? Lol.
How much do you think SQEX is expecting from a (traditional) mainline DQ game in Japan?

PS: never said FG was a MH game, but a game targeted and promoted to the same audience. Also: the porting of CG on PSV was not done by imageepoch, but the game IS imageepoch's anyway.

I'm sticking to my prediction that DQXI is a 3DS game with ports to other platforms.
That was my guess for awhile, but the fact that SE is going all in on the PS4 not just with DQ heroes, but also all their biggest franchises, means PS4 is just as likely. Western sales will likely be better on the PS4 than the 3DS also.

I wonder what's suicide: putting DQXI on PS4 with all them fancy FFXV-like graphics or Wii U with PS3 like assets.

Then again, one of them has FFXV and that will capture a market already.
Such a Wii U version will also have a PS3 version but those two platforms will be far less relevant than the PS4 when DQXI releases. It's obvious the PS4 is far less risky.

I think how much they expect from a game depends on what the game is. Without knowing exactly what sort of title is being planned, and the specifics of the business strategy, making a wild guess on specific sales expectations is extremely foolish and pointless.

DQXI is gonna be on PS4, people stop kidding yoselves. If and when the game actually comes out, 3DS will be a last gen device(+2016, SE high profile games have an immense long announce to actual launh periods, don't expect it anytime soon), PS4 will be in its prime years, having received price cuts, Slim console, Morpheus, DQ Heroes, FFXV.
