Media Create Sales: Week 39, 2017 (Sep 25 - Oct 01)

Nice Switch boost, but I feel kinda bad for Sen III :( Honestly will be a difficult entry to sell even in the West, so I can understand now why XSEED is starting to port the first to games to PC and prepare the audience
and I hope they can release Zero and Ao before Sen III, we can wait

When I asked why he just said he was burnt out on Musou games.

I'm sure he's not alone.
That's why I thought a Musou spin-off sounded like a good idea back then, but then it feels like genre fatigue set in from multiple Musou spin-offs of popular franchises made it seem that FEW wouldn't end up doing that well come launch.

That's why I thought a Fire Emblem MOBA would have probably been a better idea, it's not exactly popular in Japan due to the niche PC userbase unless they are playing MOBAs on mobile.

Yeah I remember feeling pretty "meh" when it was announced. I love Fire Emblem but feel this game was unnecessary.

One of my friends is the biggest FE fanboy I know. He has bought (and finished) every FE game since the Famicom. This is the first FE game he has ever skipped. When I asked why he just said he was burnt out on Musou games.

I'm sure he's not alone.
I’m in a similar boat. I liked the idea of a Fire Emblem-themed Musou game in theory, but in practice there are two issues for me:

a) Fire Emblem characters are largely too similar. There’s just a handful of classes and weapons and in my mind it all just blends somewhat together. I was excited to finally be able to play characters like Ganon or Gorons in HW, but there’s not really much in the FE realm that makes me wonder how these characters would play in an action game. They aren’t really all that distinctive, the protagonists in particular are virtually the same character in each game.

b) It’s just another Musou and I’m frankly tired of it. More recent collabs like Dragon Quest and Attack on Titan at least tried to hide their Musou nature somewhat, but FEW is just yet another Musou.

BNE underestimated DBXV2 for Switch demand. They said they would have new copies ready at the end of September, which was this week. Nice bump. The Deluxe Edition announcement will cause trouble tho... :(
Well, it actually sucks a lot more that BNE didn't wait to bring Deluxe Edition to Switch.

11./15. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild # <ADV> (Nintendo) {2017.03.03} (¥6.980) - 7.615 / 598.670 (+38%)
Looks like there's still strong interest in this game, definitely expecting strong sales during holiday season (but not really because of DLC, to be honest).

Musous are just fucking boring
and no, that doesn't seem to be a good result for a FE spin-off

Knack 2 not even charting, Crash Bandicoot underperforming - Japan must hate good 3D platformers 🤔

Switch approaching behemoth status - people want to play Picross S at their favorite ramen spots and not be bound by TVs and stationary electricity 👈

Are any of these Trails games actually good or just weeb-good

Capcom should thank god that they have the FGC

Was expecting like 100k for Fire Emblem. I was way off. Shame since it seemed like the perfect franchise for a musou title
Most of the cast news about the game were received negatively. They clearly had mistaken priorities with the game's roster, like pushing arbitrary groupings like "Chrom's initial party!" and "All Fates Royals!" rather than focusing on popularity or even uniqueness. Some of that could be seen as just usual internet negativity, but it was present almost with every reveal, so I don't think it was just a loud minority in this case. The fact that even someone like Ike, who was in Smash Bros, wasn't added, and they outright mentioned how they'd only add him in a sequel in a recent interview was just stupid.

Even outside of that, although the game seems to be getting good impressions, somehow their marketing failed to highlight most of that gameplay content in the big previews.

Expected more from FE Warriors, but its performances on New 3DS too, and the results from other Switch games, clearly (to me) point to issues related to the game itself

What do you mean? Wasn't it determined that it was 1% of a total 830k? Or are you referring to the fact that stock is limited in UK?
The 1%, I guess. Is 830k a confirmed number?
Let's say 1% is a rounded-down number of 1,49% (the most positive possibility), that would mean ~12,3k copies. The most negative possibility is ~4,2k. So FIFA18 Switch most likely less in the UK than in Japan, but it can be close. We're calculating with measured values, which makes it tricky.

Didn't see the total was 830k, figured it would have been over a million with the title being so big there and PS4 having millions of consoles sold there. -sorry

Out of curiosity, what was the PS3's best year in Japan? Feels like the PS4 is pulling those sort of numbers, but without data it's hard to tell.

Also, how long until Switch becomes the new DS? God damn. Hot cakes x 100.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I'll ask again: define "well".
Well enough for a sequel on Switch after the mainline FE has been released.

Zelda IP is too important for Nintendo let Tecmo work on a bunch of HW titles + sequels....but Fire Emblem seems like the series where it would make sense.

So yeah totally expecting FEW 2 Switch only in 2019.

FEW numbers are quite meh but it was to be expected. The Musou genre is so saturated these days, FE is not nearly as popular as some people seem to think and the game just didn't look very exciting.

I'm curious to see how DW9 will perform. Hopefully it breathes some life into the genre because Koei won't make it if it keeps going this way...

Also yikes at Cold Steel 3, they pretty much erased 40% of their sales. Why that particular game skipped Vita I'll never understand. If you want to build a bigger audience on the PS4, maybe try to do it with a title that isn't part of an ongoing series?

True. What I've seen from several people around here (and I have the same trepidation), is that the game seems to want to cater to the newfound mainstream audience instead of the hardcore audience. The issue is that the former is much less likely to be interested in a musou game, while the latter is being underserved because of the almost complete lack of older FE characters.

FE Warriors landed about where I expected it, so seems like that trepidation had some generality to it.

Yeah, the 830k was confirmed based on previous year's number (which was somehow known to Bruno) and the percentage drop given in an article of gamesindustry.biz or MCV UK.

We read yesterday there was 6M PS4 online players, and 2M on XBox One. So over 8 millions, and only 10% of them coming from UK seems really low.

Digital sales must be huge.

Wait for Mario...

Zelda isn't as popular in Japan compared to the rest of the world. I'm not 100% sure on FE being more popular though, like haven't most Zelda games done 300k LTD in Japan? That's about the ceiling for most FE games too. And BotW will definitely sell more LTD than FE Switch, no matter how good FE Switch is.
300k is more low end for Zelda in Japan.

Sammy's Village EP2

Today I was speaking to one of my Japanese friends and I told him that I liked Monster Hunter very much. He told me about World and I said I wasn't too excited about it, he asked me why and I said "because I can't play it on the go", he then asked me if it's not coming to Switch, and I said "no, it's PS4 only". He got confused and disappointed because he wanted to play World with his friends at the University, like they did with past entries, so now he is not looking forward to World anymore.

Capcom is not safe as long as I'm around.
Doing the Lord's work.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
It's saddening to see this happen to Falcom's lifeblood series. Kiseki had become their biggest series here and now it's struggling to keep the fanbase on just a home console.

Hope they find a solution, I don't know web/mobile will be a good choice for the mainline series or if Switch would be a great option either. Switch might come at the expense of Sony's support with the rest of Asia and would probably be more expensive to take on than if it were another Sony portable. Falcom isn't a big company like Koei who can get a team to port games to whichever platform they want to try out supporting.

There's not going to be a FEW 2 if the Musou genre keeps getting less popular. Let's wait for Dynasty Warriors 9 to see how it pans out.

Also, FEW failed in a lot of execution points. The main characters are lame, they are twins with swords, there's so many sword lords as it is. Why couldn't they have an axe and a bow? They also look very unappealing.

Not to mention that focusing on restricting the roster to Shadow Dragon, Awakening and Fates affected the appeal of the roster too. If they looked at things globally, putting in Ike and Roy would have guaranteed worldwide sales because they are unreasonably popular due to Smash Bros.

Much obliged! :)

Ah, so not quite there yet but not super far away (assuming they had a big release this holiday there, they could even get close to that).

Not sure the sales can increase next year (feel like this is probably their peak, with the Switch taking off like it has), but considering how it started what we have now is better than nothing I suppose.

Doubt it'll ever reach the PS3's LTD though, which is a shame but it is what it is.

I guess Sony had the right idea to give the first Knack away at launch, since Knack 2 demonstrated that no one was going to buy it otherwise.
You don't say. I could told you that at the PS4 launch. In fact I'm pretty sure I did say this to someone.

One of the great certainty's of Media Create threads.

PS4 sold about 800k last year from begin October through to the end of December, but that contained two big sales boosters in PS4 Pro and FFXV (and the recently released PS4 Slim to a smaller degree). Still, I think it can pass the PS3 highest number this year personally.
In fact, it passed it last year already.

I dont think anything will beat Brain Training 2. Brain Training 2 sold about 5 million copies in Japan. The sequel, Devilish Brain Training, i think the last known LTD is somewhere around 300k.
Knack 2 might beat that depending on where it is. We need Famitsu or possibly even Dengeki to be sure.
