Would the success of Disgaea 5 Complete and whatnot encourage other niche Japanese devs like Idea Factory/Compile Heart, Falcom, etc?

i guess falcom seems like a no-go? they would probably be okay with someone else doing the heavy lifting for stuff to pc or other platforms, but they seem very comfortable with playstation.

Amazon reviews for Hakoniwa are pretty bad. They say it's repetitive and you need to grind too much to do anything.

The game bombed really hard too. Shame because this looks super cute, maybe they could re-release it for Switch with fixes to what people disliked.

just in the west. including japan it's got a lot more to account for, but the western side is moving really fast.

How's the tail been?

I haven't seen any Switch games losing their value at retail yet...

Does IF main even make anything other than Hakuoki though? CH is the one who makes all their RPGs I think.

*shrugs*

On that note I saw that Experience apparently expressed interest in Switch... might be making that up though(!)

As long as they can keep making games for Xbox, I'm sure they'll put the things they actually want to sell on Switch going forward to :p

Dude from IF said they wanted to bring a game to Switch, could easily mean Hakuoki though.

I always count them as part and parcel of the same thing. iirc IF got credited on some of the Neptunia spinoffs (Hyperdevotion Noire I think).

Reminds me of the time people thought Neptunia U was gonna be a Wii U game because of the name (except Nintendo support will probably actually happen this time around).

i haven't seen much of hakoniwa company works, but i think it would be a good fit on switch from my understanding of it as a dq builders srpg thing. i'd also like to see yomawari on the machine just so they could keep up the trend of one yomawari release per halloween (and maybe by 2019 a third game could be out).

I'd love to see Hakoniwa Company Works released for Switch. I would've bought it had it been released for Vita, but it's PS4-only, so I had to pass on it. Should a Switch port pop up in 2018, I'd buy it day one.

The same goes for Yomawari. A Yomawari 1+2 combo pack for Switch would be especially awesome--and this is coming from someone who owns two copies of Night Alone and is eagerly awaiting his copy of Midnight Shadows :)

That reminds me, a NISA-localized game that really should have been a no-brainer on Switch was Birthdays: The Beginning, developed by Toybox and published by ASW in Japan, most specifically, it was the newest creation of the creator of Harvest Moon.

How that never got a Switch-port, I have no idea. I do wonder if NISA was the one to get a port of Touhou Kobuto V greenlit on Switch or if it was already happening anyway.

if it's not in-house then the desire really needs to come from the original developer. it's a lot harder to convince another company to port a game since it's their overhead, even if it's just managing some outsource team to do the programming.

birthdays had other issues (such as the name, birthdays the beginning), but if it had been a switch exclusive and near-launch, it would have cleaned up.

DOA5U is the one I thought was gonna be a Wii U release(and might have been planned at first to be fair).

The topic was raised before about Switch eshop sales, since we don't have many reference points.

So with Kamiko at 150k, that gives some kind of reference. Anybody know how high Kamiko has been ranking on eshops generally? Is Sonic saved?

It released Apr 27.

It seems Xenoblade 2 is still in the same spot (19th out of 20). I wonder if it's good or bad?

X2 won't do well. It will come and go like any other regular JRPG, which is exactly what it is. A non event.

I don't see anything special about X2. Xenoblade and X both brought something different and unique (sadly X was on a toxic console), but X2 is just more of the same and kinda in a bad shape too.

Thank god Monolith is moving to something new for their next project.

Don't underestimate the power of waifu. If it can save Fire Emblem, it can save Xenoblade. They just announced a new girl that shows her panty. This game will do just fine.

No offense, but most games would've. Almost every single NIS game would've done gangbusters at launch, but the competition is only getting stronger and I don't see games doing as well moving forward.

i think that kind of game is more specifically built for a nintendo audience than the one sony cultivated on playstation this generation. the ps4, until 2017, was more like the xbox 360 than the ps3. switch has been a lot kinder towards retro-styled games and japanese titles in general from the very beginning.

The salt is real lmao.

Just accept that the majority of people wanted Chronicles rather than X. Never understood the love for X especially since the story fell flat on its toes.

How about its a really good game with a ton of lore and tally fun and great sidequests, way better than the OG xenoblade,i say this as someone who loves both and consider xenoblade 1 to be my 2nd favorite game of all time, just below starfox 64

I enjoy all the charts in this thread so much, I decided to share one of my own.

This chart shows how many posts in the weekly MC threads mention Capcom and Monster Hunter. This will let us track how angry the community was throughout the year.

I added all of the variations on the names that I could think of to my scraper, but I'm sure I missed a few. Even though this information may not be 100% accurate, it should reflect general sentiment over time.

But some people are in ecstatic joy with Capcom when they mention it! Surely!

But I guess people have difficulty typing without their body so perhaps I am wrong.

I'm a huge fan of XBC, having beaten it 100% 5 times and working on a 6th one with the N3DS port and someone who for a bunch of reasons couldn't get started on XBX despite buying it three times. (Collector's edition for the swag, gave the box copy to a friend, bought it digitally, got another physical copy when Target cleared it out) But I finally did decide to do the deed and complete it before XB2 comes out (ideally before Mario Odyssey/Pokémon Ultra Sun, but that's becoming more and more unrealistic) and really finding myself enjoying it on this go around. I can tell you as an uber XBC fan that yes, on the surface XBX seems like a game that saw what the first game did right and completely missed the mark, doubling down on the MMO battle and quest system while being largely single player and ignoring the story, but that's not quite the case with the game. The story is deep and rich along the main path but even better with a couple of key sidequests. It reminds me a lot of the Dragon Quest games from V-IX. The light online stuff is actually quite good and still plenty active even today.

I think the real problems stem from the slow start of the story, the fact that Wii U was a snakebit console, and that terrible this is our first HD game lets make the font TOO DAMN SMALL syndrome that most developers figured out in 2005-2007. If XBX had been a launch game for Switch it would have done really well with its online features, which are kind of advanced in a primitive way if that makes any sense? Reminds me of the PSS in the Generation Six Pokémon games, perfectly functional and semi ground breaking in a weird archaic coating.

I don't know why around here XC and XCX can't coexist for some reason.

On another note, pretty excited for SMO numbers in 2 weeks.

03/NEW. Middle Earth: Shadow of War (Warner Entertainment Japan) – {12/10/2017} (¥7.850)
08/09. Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition (Mojang) – {25/12/2014} (¥2.592)
14/NEW. Lost Sphear (Square Enix) – {12/10/2017} (¥6.264)
16/03. FIFA 18 (Electronic Arts) – {29/09/2017} (¥8.424)

No miracle digital sales for Lost Sphear, probably abysmal even.
I can't see Shadow of War above 4k, Minecraft PS4 is around 2k retail, it's assuredly less than half digital, even less than a third looking at usual retail/digital ratio for the game, so <700
It's above Fifa 18 though, which should be in the few hundreds ballpark.

So yeah, safe guess to say it sold around 500-800 digital copies
Setsuna had a much bigger digital ratio than that, but it was also much cheaper, going for a higher price and selling less overall tends to skew the ratio more in favour of retail.

That's a non news, but well for non regular it's still worth pointing out the fact.

Now after playing it seriously...I'd buy it a fourth time on Switch if it had better font. Plus definitely more people would be online playing it.

I definitely would imagine that the game will sell more the Xenoblade X.

Xeno X was most likely hampered by the perception of being a radical departure of gameplay and lack of story compared to the original. And most particularly the fact that it was released on the Wii U, a console, that, LTD sales wise will probably be surpassed by the Switch in a single year.

I would imagine that as long as Xeno2 gets positive reviews and word of mouth it will do well on the Switch since it will be the first, and at the moment only, real hardcore JRPG on the system.

That's my hope at least.

The topic was raised before about Switch eshop sales, since we don't have many reference points.

So with Kamiko at 150k, that gives some kind of reference. Anybody know how high Kamiko has been ranking on eshops generally? Is Sonic saved?

It released Apr 27.

Kamiko basically hasn't charted in the top 10 the last 4 months - it had reached 110K sales in July so there have been an additional 40K sales so on average 10K per month. So overall very decent legs - Sonic is probably well over 250K on the Switch and has done really well in Europe and NA.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own

You say this but im pretty sure XBX sold pretty well on WiiU, like I believe it isnt a million seller but apparently got kinda close, it def sold like 500,000 and it doesnt seem like anybody at nintendo was disappointed in its sales.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
I'd hope Xenoblade 2 does well in Japan since I don't know if it'll do better than X in North America. It's coming out pretty early and doesn't have the multi-player or the ability to create a custom character, I hope I'm wrong and it does better worldwide but a marketing campaign for the west hasn't really started yet and the Japanese twitter is clearly trying to reach the locals with all those guest artists and voice actors. If it doesn't do better than the previous games in Japan who are those updates for?
