The same rumor says that the initial expectations from Capcom for the first shipment were 700k. As jcm says some kind of problem with the cartridge manufacturing capability seems more likely than 'Oh, surely Capcom wants to troll Nintendo'.

Questioning Capcom's 3DS decisions after them announcing or releasing Monster Hunter, Resident Evil and Street Fighter games not even a year after the console is in the market is pretty ridiculous.

Another possible reason could be that the release candidate failed and they still need to fix some last minute bugs, delaying the manufacturing for a few weeks and thus not being able to produce enough for the launch

Sounds like they'll have about the same numbers the week after so it probably won't be a huge issue in the end.

You also have to realize that excess supply of MH3 Wii and Mario Galaxy became a huge booster for grassroots internet FUD campaigns by naysayers. Pictures of both being sold through bargain bins proliferated on the internet, and people were led to believe both were failures -- Mario Galaxy it didn't quite work because of the typical great legs Mario's got, MH3 is still plagued to this day by views as being a failure. This, when it's the only console MH3 to break million unit sales, and actual info by Capcom stating that in reality, over 800,000 copies of the game sold at close to retail prices. (per Sinobi - http://twitter.com/#!/sinobintage/status/133768144278921216 ) Anyone with a keen eye can tell when this kind of operation is at work, but adolescents are far easier to fool, as are the international community who are forced to get this data second-hand because of language barriers. For whatever reason the majority of the sites that piggy-back off 2ch news and rumors have an extreme Sony slant, and they'll make sure any bad news similar to ones past spread like wildfire.

The way to prevent that? Simple, limit shipments every week so that stores are never overstocked. Seems like a bad idea to do this at year's end when you want every copy available to sell, but like I said before, I can't blame them if they're being cautious.

Adding to what muu said Capcom can easily blame Nintendo for limiting the cart production should the shipments indeed sell out too quickly. It's a win win situation this way. ;)

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
As jcm says some kind of problem with the cartridge manufacturing capability seems more likely than 'Oh, surely Capcom wants to troll Nintendo'.

you know what's even more likely?

Number of preorders < 300k and pressing the carts to match the demand !

fake edit as i looked down :

Muu already covered it.

there's NO WAY ON EARTH they'll miss shipping to match preorders, so i'd think it's safe to assume that there's less than 300k preorders. I will keep my eye out for signs saying that preorders are no longer guaranteed but i don't think there's any reason for that....

Well the first we heard of the small shipment was when retailer reports started mentioning stock problems. In that they won't have enough stock in the initial shipment to meet demand.

Like, it's right there in Chris' post.

This is completely understandable, but 300k is way too low, its like they're purposely limiting supply to create shortages.

Dude, give it up. They shipped 1 million units at launch, of course it sold through 1 million units. In what scenario would the game not sell 1 million units? By your own admission retail got stuck with around 20% of their initial stock being sold new for drastically reduced prices. You don't ship an amount of stock that you expect to languish on store shelves for nearly half a year before selling the excess in the bargain bin. You ship 1 million when you expect to sell 1 million at full retail price, this isn't rocket science here. You can say shipped is the same as sold for a publisher, fair point, but situations like this hurt your standing with retailers and impacts how many copies they're willing to take of future releases, which was likely why there weren't any meaningful releases announced for the Wii from Capcom after that game. The price crash also had other serious implications for the game, namely that it limited the potential for a budget rerelease when a 100% new copy of the game could be still purchased on store shelves for cheaper than the rerelease.

Yes you acknowledge that there was an excess of stock but you also write it off as insignificant when the overall sales are relatively high. That isn't the case, in particular when the excess in stock is so dramatic.

Edit: Something I forgot to mention is that obviously some games need to do more than simply "Break Even", in much the same way as something like Transformers would for a movie studio. Certain blockbuster releases, like Monster Hunter, are used to offset potential loses from other projects.

According to Enterbrain, publisher of the Famitsu magazines, 3DS sold 304,000 units in October, making it the number one platform for the month. The system has topped the Enterbrain monthly hardware charts for the past five months straight.

In software sales, however, the 3DS managed just 122,000 units, meaning only 40% of the system's buyers picked up software with their purchase.

October

3DS Hardware - 304k
3DS Software - 122k

PSP Software - 1298k

Now it would be nice if someone (Chris or Road) can calculate how many copies have games outside of the Top 30 sold in October.

Monster Hunter 3G cannot be pre-ordered on Amazon at this time.

Clearly retailers knew how much of a disappointment its launch would be, so they quit or will quit while they're ahead!

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Its been like that for weeks, right ?
So the low-ass shipment is probably true. So weird.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Oh lol XD
It's like this since last week.
But I'm sure Capcom will increase.
Remember what they did with MHP3rd.

What said Chris1964 some posts earlier.
In october, the shipment rumored was 1 million, but then we all know they doubled it.

Well I would hope that they do this with MH3G, because a 300k shipment would be an absolute disaster of epic proportions.

Those software sales are only inside the weekly top 30.

As Chris said, we can only guess sales outside the top 30 if we mix Media Create weekly total software with Famitsu's weekly software share, which is not optimal.

Anyway, here are weekly 3DS software sales for Media Create Top 20, Famitsu Top 30, Media Create Top 100 and the mix of Famitsu and MC mentioned above, along with the 3DS hardware from MC (red).

I don't think Amazon took 2m+ pre-orders for 3rd either smh.

This week's numbers are out. Great sales for Uncha 3!

1. Mario 343,000 343,000
2. Uncha 125,000 125,000
3. BF3 PS3 123,000 123,000
4. FF type-0 122,000 594,000
5. Kirby 122,000 192,000
6. WE2012 PSP 45,000 45,000
7. Slime Mori Mori 3 39,000 39,000
8. BF3 360 28,000 28,000
9. Just Dance 26,000 189,000
10. Go Vacation 17,000 89,000

Is that a slightly lower start from Slime Mori Mori - wasn't the original around 44k?

EDIT:

Yep - ~43k. Should be interesting to see if it has its predecessor's legs.

EDIT 2:

SM3DLand's sales are on par with SMG2's first week - if the talk about demand exceeding stock at that one chain pans out across the board, perhaps it could have a strong second week?

EDIT 3:

...and Just Dance sales flat? Interesting.

Predictions

[PSP] Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Extend (Sega) - 227,765
[PSP] Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke (SCE) - 81,523
[WII] Sengoku Basara 3: Utage (Capcom) - 39,323
[PS3] Sengoku Basara 3: Utage (Capcom) - 136,432
[PS3] Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition (Konami) - 42,321
[WII] PokePark 2: Beyond the World (Pokemon Co.) - 46,231

Pretty good uncharted sales, BF3 too. Mario does same as SMG2, it'll certainly have better legs than it though, its going to be interesting to see them.

Ooh! Mario wasn't far off 400K after all! Best debut for a 3D Mario game ever.

Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 have done amazingly well! Kirby got a significant bump too! (wasn't expecting sales to actually go up!)

Just Dance is still holding on well. It's gonna have some strong legs it seems!

Damn Mario did good, especially considering the small userbase. I can see it having legs more similar to 2D Mario's.

WOW at Battlefield and Uncharted!
DQ even higher than what I thought.
And that is the best debut for a 3D Mario ever, even if only for 3k.
Amazing numbers.

Rocket Slime for DS also had a lower debut and LTD than the GBA game.

Edit: The total sales figure for Kirby is weird, or there was a huge disparity between trackers. Because Media Create had it doing 136,811 in its first week.

Probably, it did 60k, but the article reported Type 0's week total also for it.

Yes, but that was more in the order of 20K+ less - not just 4K. I suspect it will end up lower than the DS title, but it's a decent enough start.

It also has more of the holiday season to sell, It'll probably outsell the DS version.

Big western FPS games selling better in general this gen, its not a surprise considering how this gen's support has played out.

It's not a bad drop. Expensive RPGs (>7000Y) are having really bad second week drops this gen.
