Media Create Sales: Week 48, 2016 (Nov 28 - Dec 04)

Persona 4 was still lower-mid range for the PS2, and the audience has greatly expanded since then. Look at the sales for all of the spinoffs and golden compared to what is typically the case for a 300k series.

Why does that matter? If you can grow your franchise in a shrinking market that implies the contraction doesn't necessarily mean you need to see a huge drop off in sales.

MGS5 did have a pretty big decline if you are just looking at the PS4 version. There seems to be a portion of the active PS3 audience that is still hesitant to transition.

Persona was multiplat too. Who cares? The market includes all the systems currently available not just the PS4. We are talking about series, not platforms.

How well did MGS or Persona sell compared to FF?

What does that have to do with market contractoon =franchise contraction. Other enthusiast series didnt see their sales drop by half. That is the point.

No, if anything it actually did much better than expected.

Most people had it at 400-500k in the predictions.

oh ok pulling shit out of your ass at this point are we

There's nothing stopping FF XV selling 1.5 million in Japan. Wii U titles have managed to do this. So as much as you can blame the current downturn in the traditional gaming industry it's not some sort of complete explanation as to way it sold what it did.
The Wii U titles that will easily surpass FFXV are of a different breed and can reach a wider audience in spite of what's happening. Yet Final Fantasy XV will likely remain one of the best selling titles on the PS4 by a safe margin and will sell much, much better than any sort of similar game on the Wii U (e.g., Xenoblade). It's not like in the west where we could point to titles that have clearly succeeded it. If not towards other JRPGs, action games, and so on, what are PS4 owners buying instead?

Here you go :)

Pokemon GO effect, for sure. Plus, based on current trends, it seems to be that 3DS is out-selling NA in Europe by a wide margin this year, particularly this fall. I don't think it's all due to Pokemon GO. I think GO is partially why, but I also think Europe is a different beast, and because there are just so many titles for 3DS, and so many models to buy based on preference, casuals are warming up to it over there, kind of like the DS effect that hit in 2005 after Nintendogs.

But, needless to say, 3DS selling better in Europe than in NA is very telling.

I'm fine with those numbers and don't care that they are down from 13. 13 had immense hype but I bet you can find plenty of people who feel it damaged the brand.

I'm sure they made money and will sell a very respectable amount.

FF is now a Fire emblem level franchise. think that over for a few seconds.

Oh, so that's the correct term. I guess they are not going to change that right?
I haven't paid a lot of attention past the first trailer, but it definitely seemed like a remaster of the FFX sort, not something wildly changed like they're doing with VII.

Wasn't expecting much but Final Fantasy XV still seemed lower than what I expected (predicted around 800k) but on the flipside it's effect on the PS4 was more than what I expected (About 80k)

Will be interesting to see if Asian sales can elevate the sales of the title, seems the course of action a lot of Japanese publishers are pushing for with lose Japanese sales.

What is the next big PS4 release in Japan?

Once upon a time it would be Yakuza.

But now even that will be selling half of what it's last mainline title did.

So, about that Kamen Rider game on Nintendo 3DS...

05./00. [3DS] All Kamen Rider: Rider Revolution # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2016.12.01} (¥5.700) - 23.308 / NEW

Previous game on 3DS sold about 11k, so that's an improvement, but that's much worse than that PSV/3/4 game (total: 71k FW).

Oh, and Digimon did really poor, but I don't think anyone expected otherwise (not even Bamco, I guess):

11./00. [3DS] Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2016.12.01} (¥5.700) - 7.255 / NEW

Famitsu numbers are out.

They have FFXV at 716k on PS4 so not a big difference but a little higher.

I don't see your point. FE is a newly popular series on portable and is thus bigger (or at least will eventually be if it keeps growing) than virtually every console-centric "core" series like Resident Evil, Yakuza, Metal Gear, or Persona (all established on PS1 or PS2), by default. This situation has only become more significant since FFXIII released (which put out numbers once what MonHun could do several times in a short time span).

I would have never bet on the 3DS reaching some kind of second spring. Nintendo is on the path to some kind of PS3 turnaround in perception and sales.

99 $/EUR seems to an excellent price point to ride the 2DS/3DS hardware out over the next few years and grab the attention of an audience that's not yet ready for the switch and didn't really have anything new after the Wii and DS. They might now be ready for some nostalgia.

The point is that there's nothing stopping FF from selling over a million nothing at all. FF13 sold 1.5 million when everything else before it sold less than 500k. Even on dead consoles series can sell over a million, Pokémon is stronger than ever. Just because the market is down doesn't mean the biggest series have to follow equal or worse trajectory. Often the opposite is the case as the biggest franchise eat everything else. That's not what happened with FF.

Those number for Final Fantasy XV :aaah:

Mario Maker 3DS won't come close to 1m of Wii U only because of the lack of bundles but even then half of that for this quick port should be reachable.

Yeah, it's positioned nicely for at least a 500k LTD with the holidays around, especially looking at sell through. But I agree that reaching WiiU version's LTD is a long, long shot.

700k's not too bad considering its prior baggage and the console market. Was expecting somewhere near 2x of P5 FW.

Still, the 5m worldwide shipment should save XV.. I think?

It is alarming how it couldn't even have a sell-through bigger than 80%, despite the fact it was released on a Tuesday, so 6 days of availability.

Heh everything besides Mario was vastly overshipped. FF a bit less so but sub 80% ST on first week for a jrpg is not great.

I'm willing to concede that it's possible, but I'm not convinced it would be likely in almost all situations, given the largely understood narrative. FE blowing up on portables and Nintendo able sell to a bigger audience doesn't really work against that. That's why I ask what people are buying with their PS4s if there almost as many out in the wild as PS3s at the time of FFXIII's release, but no big game has decent attach rate and most series are declining or plateauing at best (and there are fewer games in general).

how did FFXV do as a percentage of sales to install base compared to FFXIII? (my guess is that FFXIII probably has a better percentage, too.)

nm, i see it was answered above.

Great debut for Mario Maker 3DS. Should be a steady seller for a while. FFXV debut isn't great, but considering the console market in Japan, what were people expecting? The PS4 install base is nowhere near what the PS3's was when FFXIII came out, so makes it really difficult to compare. If you divide the sales of FFXV by the total PS4 base in Japan, I think looking at the attach rate is the most accurate comparison to make.

Besides, with all the DLC they're doing, plus digital sales, depending on if sales hold up reasonably well through Decemeber, SE is probably pretty satisfied with the reception.

FFXV in it's debut week already has over an 18% attach rate to PS4. So nearly a fifth of all PS4 owners already own FFXV, and it's only been out for a week.

Compare that to FFXIII for PS3, which had a 35% attach rate to PS3 in it's debut week, but there was no such thing as Day 1 digital releases back then, *and* the domestic console market in Japan was significantly more popular seven years ago.

It's funny that you've done the math on the % attach rates, but never cared to check what that meant for the console install base on the PS3 vs. the PS4 =P.

1.5M * 100/35 = 4.2M for the PS3. The PS4 is at 3.74M. Not all that different right?

It looks like it was March 9th in the UK, which should have been a Tuesday.

In Japan it was Thursday, December 17th.

Looks like FFXV sold a good bit of hardware though. This is the highest weekly sales for the console since launch right? That 237K from FFXIII's launch week is still insane though...

The % drops are shockingly similar to ORAS lol... So if Pokemon sales on average stay steady for the next 3 weeks with the holidays, it should break 3M by Week 52? Should we be expecting sales to go up a good bit on Week 51 though?

If I didn't mess up somewhere, total Pokémon Sun and Moon sales for Media Create (including dual pack counted as 2 units) should be +2 504 329 (+ whatever the dual-pack sold that week).

Well, the two games came out during the same month and during the same week.
