Media Create Sales: Week 48, 2016 (Nov 28 - Dec 04)

Woof at FFXV, worldwide is going to be interesting.

In a vacuum, I'd agree, but not when you look at it in the context of the decline from what it could have been and this being the system's biggest (and last major) release (until DQXI in... some far off future).

This was the turning point for the PS3 and the PS3 will soon shoot past the PS4.
Sure, but I always keep market conditions in mind with this stuff. I know it doesn't seem to be that much of a difference maker for some of you but I put quite a bit of weight behind these circumstances.

Updated with the new m-c figure:

PS HW LTD when first FF released. Launches aligned:
Dotted line = PS3 vs. PS4 weekly.

PS1 = gray line
PS2 = deep blue line
PS3 = black line
PS4 = aquamarine line

LTD when FF released and FW attach ratios:
PS1 5.0m - 40% !
PS2 5.3m - 33%
PS3 4.3m - 36%
PS4 3.7m - 19%

I can't see a scenario in which the PS4 is up in 2017 and not either slightly down or very down, unless there's some unforseen Splatoon-like event for 2017. 2016 was a year of playing your hand with everything big you had in the pipelines for three/ten years of build up.

I don't disagree, but I am also looking at context of what FFXV *could have been* (and it none the less is the last and biggest release the system will see in its lifetime as an exclusive), and then wasn't. Seeing Splatoon break 100k on the holidays was a mark of success against the odds, seeing FFXV (the biggest "grace" that the PS3 had in times) just barely manage such a number is not a sign of "great numbers" unless you're only looking at scalars.

I am coming at this from a vectors perspective.

Lol some people trying to say DQXI will decline. Just accept FF declined and it doesn't mean you have to drag DQXI with it. DQXI is on multiple systems and it will sell great. Also, it looks like a DQ game we all want unlike FFXV.

While the market situation is generally awful (I certainly post about it a lot), I do think the fact that their attach rate is half of what it used to be says some pretty negative things about both the game and the brand in the dedicated space.

I also feel it's going to be pretty hard to actually pick up the slack overseas, and even if it does, failing to grow in what has been a really strong time period for major RPGs isn't a great performance. I'm similarly critical of BioWare's relative stagnation even though they're moving 5 or so million units a game.

Well, we know UK's standing. Though I don't think we will hear anything of the US until December NPD, right?

Well, to be fair, that new A-Train is just an updated version, not a new entry (and there's an update for players who already have it).

I know. Neo Atlas didn't sell that much worse than the last game that released on PS1! (especially if digital is included). But it's still hardly a hit, just like A-Train (judging by sellthrough, they must've been expecting a little more).

I don't know much about sells, But what was the Point of releasing the XB1 version of FF XV to such low sells?

[XB1] Final Fantasy XV # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2016.11.29} (¥8.800) - 3.791 / NEW
They've got the game on the system. They've got the Japanese language files. If there's no reason to release that game on the platform, there's never any reason to release anything for it in Japan.

I do think the brand of FF plays into it as well but I also think it would have been pretty difficult to obtain growth (or at least maintain being flat) regardless of how well SE worked on improving the FF brand. The potential is just stunted from the start because of the market they are releasing the game into.

Persona 5 is used as an example to counter that assertion (or even Vena's Splatoon example) but that could be considered an outlier among the piles of games that have dropped overall.

Pubs and devs do need to work on releasing the right product and assessing their brand power/potential but I also think all of that is immediately impacted by the state of the market.

would love hear why PS4 will sell more in 2017.

Ps4pro, stronger first 9 months, another price-cut and some pretty strong titles get released. Why shouldn't it?

You generally miss the mark when it comes to PS4 predictions (especially for this year), so the PS4 might still have a chance! :p

So how do FFXV first days sales in Japan compare with Persona 5?

There you go

https://sites.google.com/site/gamedatalibrary/software-by-platform/playstation-4

Why didn't anyone mention this site sooner T_T.... I have been looking for a replacement for japanltdrank for a while now...

God, could you imagine if Splatoon debuted on the Wii instead?

Wait, RE6 HD outsold 4 & 5? Why? lmao
It just would have meant the Wii U would have been ever more dead in Japan as well....

Shouldn't you include the ps3 version as well?

It's on the same site... just browse a little bit: Persona 5 PS3 - 76.534 111.740

Was pointing this out a month or so back, but that discussion got weird so never brought it up again. Anyway I think there are only 3 weeks left on Famitsu, so it has to do 72,390 per week. Gonna be close.

Also to others, no other discussion on this?

Looking at the top selling PS4 titles, aren't Final Fantasy XV and Dark Souls III some of the few titles that weren't cross-platform with PS3 or Vita?

Famitsu also seperated XB systems last week too but I didn't notice it. 902 were only for XB1 S and there were 138 for standard XB1.

I don't knows if it worths the effort to seperate them too.

Something seems off about the digital sales. So they only went from 690K to 716K with digital? Or is that something like digital cards for the game sold in stores but doesn't cover PSN downloads?

No, 716K is only physical. 690K is from Media Create and 716k is from Famitsu.

The Japanese digital market is a smaller than Western ones, though you're seeing Famitsu vs. Media Create physical numbers.

Wow man, please share your time machine.

It wasn't so difficult, things are just very predictable with the usual posters.

Now that PS3 is out of picture, Sony tries desperately to kill Vita and doesn't look PS4 can carry alone Sony's market in Japan expect more of the same.

At least Switch will make things more interesting next year.

Looking at some PS4 titles and its not bad. P5 had around 13% of its LTD retail sales (not sure if its digital estimates are LTD). I'd say max 100k digital for FFXV.

I'm taking suggestions for the 3 letters that will be used for Switch. I can't see what's more suitable. SWI, SWH, SCH, other? I tend to the first.

I'm taking suggestions for the 3 letters that will be used for Switch. I can't see what's more suitable. SWI, SWH, SCH, other? I tend to the first.

Edit: On second thought I don't like it too much. For the Pal thread I will use the same acronym you chose :p

PM! :)
Maybe you are right. Will be more clear a couple of months into 2017.

Well they had price drop with a lower cost model, a higher cost more powerful model and VR for enthusiasts and looking at games here are the 10 biggest IP from PS3 era

Final Fantasy
Resident Evil
Metal Gear Solid
Grand Theft Auto V
One Piece: Pirate Warriors
Gran Turismo
Hot Shots Golf
Tales of
Yakuza
Call of Duty

- 7 of them have already been released on PS4 most as multiplatform though, but as the latest PS3/PS4 multiplat titles have shown the transition is basically over, we should not see any worthwhile PS3/PS4 games anymore in 2017
- From the 3 left 1 is basically dead (Minna no golf), 1 will have its latest entry released in one month and will severely underperform compared to its predecessor (Resident Evil) and the latter will be released sometimes next year and will be nowhere near its highest point on PS3 (Gran Turismo)

And let's not mention that all the big IP from western publishers that the PS3 didn't have this early in its life cycle (
and Persona 5 lol
)

Asides from an hypothetical Final Fantasy XVI the biggest exclusive title we'll see on PS4 in the future might very well be GTA VI, that's just the state of the market for solo focused games on home consoles today in Japan, and multiplayer home console games are something the Playstation environment has failed to produce for quite some time now.

PS4 is just definitively on track to perform similarly as PS3 with slightly lower numbers on a yearly basis.

The decline in Japan is negated by the increased worldwide sales over x/y, so i doubt they are worried.

From what I remember XY didn't have any legs so that will probably be a big factor in closing the gap to an extent.

I don't really see any lessons to be learned from these numbers for Nintendo and Gamefreak given how Sun and Moon seem to be performing WW.

Bloodborne isn't in the list?
That's sad.

Dash Kappei

Not actually that important
Bloodborne was bundled for free after a while, so that probably reduced sales some.

That list actually includes bundled copies

Updated with the new m-c figure:

PS HW LTD when first FF released. Launches aligned:
Dotted line = PS3 vs. PS4 weekly.
tFtsLA2.png

PS1 = gray line
PS2 = deep blue line
PS3 = black line
PS4 = aquamarine line

LTD when FF released and FW attach ratios:
PS1 5.0m - 40% !
PS2 5.3m - 33%
PS3 4.3m - 36%
PS4 3.7m - 19%

Could you rehost? Graph isn't showing up on imgur

you can say the same things for FF, but it has been just a "FF is dead" in the previous pages
so west counts for Pokemon and west doesn't count for FF ?

SM is declining from XY which was declining from BW

XY was the first main entry in the series which was not able to reach the 5mln milestone, and SM is already 400k below those numbers

this is the fact.

Pokemon is slightly down in Japan, way up elsewhere
FF is way down in Japan, holding elsewhere at best

but I'm sure you know this and you're just trolling yet again
