I think it's just a stupid excuse
I was planning to buy the game since its announcement, last week I tried the demo and I liked, but of course I would have bought the game on D1 and not preordering (why pay now when i can pay 2 months later?)

if Marvelous nowadays think that people preorder a lot they are out of time...
Do you have data to back up your skepticism? It's reasonable people are more reluctant in preordering new IPs, but I do think Marvelous is well aware of this.

They obviously know what kind of pre-order numbers their games usually get and can base estimates about market interest on those. If pre-order numbers show that there currently isn't enough of a demand for your title, then... you've got a problem.

If they just need a stupid excuse, then I'm sure there are a dozen better ways than saying "Our product is about to become an absolute financial failure", considering that this doesn't exactly build up faith in your product.

I'd be surprised if Net High had enough pre-orders to make it worthwhile releasing.

The usual blog expects similar opening with 3DS for Attack on Titan. Preorders were low but last minute media push helped it and sell-through isn't bad.
At least the outlook is better than what was initially perceived. The more, the merrier! I think the title would still need decent legs though.

Maybe they made too many physical items for the pre-order bonus. It's a magazine and two soundtrack CD's.Don't know how much pre-orders mean for this market. If it struggles too much there maybe Uppers will take a fan initiative to get it out overseas, i'd buy it even if it only comes out digitally.
The demo doesn't look that bad, maybe they'll release a second one with more of the fighters and girls.

Adding more to what has been said. Takarajima Stores informed that PSV and PS4 versions of Attack on Titan has been re-stocked, and expect being sold out again. There was a lot of exposition of this game, so people bought it in good quantities. They didn't specify how could it sell, but follows the pattern PS4=PSV>PS3
Sofmap confirmed that Wii U buyers, since there are no units, are purchasing used Wii U consoles, especially the Basic Set. Also, they informed about some models of PSVita getting out of stock.

From reddit(user GarbColle) in regards to Uppers:

Kenichiro Takaki explains it in their blog:

理由は1つ、予約数が思っていたより伸びなかったから。

"There is one reason: the number of pre-orders didn't grow as expected."

He explains that the initial production size is based on the number of pre-orders, and while the current number isn't unreasonable, he believes the title can do better. So they plan to give it more time to attract more pre-orders and increase the reach of the title.

Good AoT, good.

Does anyone know what Bloodborne ended at on COMG!? DS3 is 9 points from 100 points and it still has 30 days left.

Edit - Found the answer to that.

Preorders have decreased compared to past, we have a clearly example from COMG, one reason might be nowadays games come out incomplete, bugged, with less contents (who said SFV ? :D ), at the same time if you take look at current system charts and compare them with previous generations you will see how tie-ratio has decreased, especially for sony platforms, cause nintendo games always sold in the long run.
This could mean that now people wait for the game to be released, check on internet about impressions, word of mouth and so on.

But probably the main problem for Uppers, for a game made by Marvelous is the lack of the boobs, even if they add something (and honestly that part in the game is the one I didn't like and felt as forced to attract some buyers).

So if they want to make a game but they don't know so well how could be the potential sales just make a Kickstarter and see what happens, but I'm asking too much for a japanese company...

Pre-orders in Japan are one of the main factors retailers use to determine how much of a title to order, especially for untested new IPs. Retailer orders is how a publisher determines the initial shipment and production quantity. Saying that pre-orders are irrelevant is ignorance of the retail supply chain.

"preorders are decreased from the past" ain't the same thing as "preorders are irrilevant"
read better next time what people say before tagging as ignorant someone uh?

Rakuten Weekly Comment

- Wii U Shiro Set has been re-stocked by Joshin. Mario Maker Set was by Rakuten itself.
- Other bundles as Pokken Set are quite demanded since there are no other options. This could help indirectly to the game sales.
- Attack on Titan was the surprise of the week. PlayStation Vita version was the best selling.
- KanColle didn't sell what it was expected. It surely sold what it has been pre-ordered.
- Yokai Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Dark Souls III are the most pre-ordered games of the week. Atelier Shallie Plus and Tom Clancy's The Division have been also moving quite well.
- PlayStation Vita pre-oders for the Starter Kit have started pretty well. Joshin and Books were the key retailers of this hardware.

Kancolle way lower than expected. Attack on Titan higher than expected, but still a disappointing result all things considered. Setsuna not bad, after all! Street Fighter V is non-existent.

Kan Colle - ~140k
Titan (combined) - ~150k
Setsuna (combined) - ~60k
Street Fighter - ~40k
That Attack on Titan number looks high for so low first day sales and previous hints. That hidden "*2" the blog uses is weird. The other are expected.

I never thought I'd say this, but...I get what Moor Angol is saying. Or at least, limited to Comgnet. The ratio between preorders and sales have decreased in the past few years compared to what was between 2007 and the early 2010s. It's something I've already spoken about a few months ago, and it's highlighted by the note and legend in my latest Comgnet preorders charts. Again, this is limited to Comgnet, not to extend to all the retailers. And by no means this means that preorders are irrelevant now.

Street Fighter doing Bayonetta 2 numbers.
MC:

03./00. [WIU] Bayonetta 2 <ACT> (Nintendo) {2014.09.20} (¥8.316) - 38.828 / NEW <67,29%>

Famitsu:

03./00. [WIU] Bayonetta 2 <ACT> (Nintendo) {2014.09.20} (¥8.316) - 33.114 / NEW <40-60%>

Are we actually in a universe where SFV might actually sell about the same as Bayonetta 2?

Tell me who would think that was realistic ever. :p

The Comg stuff is irrelevant. The original claim was that it preorders being low is just a stupid excuse because "not many people preorder today anymore" or whatever. That's a stupid claim to make because when they say preorders are too low, they don't mean that they have a preorder expectation, rather that because preorders still serve as a major factor in retail shipments being agreed on, the demand is not high enough for them to make an initial shipment they're happy with, so they're delaying the release to market the game more.

Unless you really think that companies and retailers are stupid, the fact that preorders have gone down over the years (if this is even true) is unimportant because such trends would already be taken into account by retailers who are the ones making the orders that determine how much the publisher can ship into the retail channel.

Any idea what's that? It's hiding a number.

What happens when a game vastly underships or overships? Poor communication or just terrible reading of demand? The former can be due to lack of making supply fast enough (because you can't magically make so many copies at once). But the latter?

Overshipping could be either retailers and publishers completely misreading demand, or publishers stuffing the channel either by pressuring retailers to take a minimum order or convincing them to order more with heavily marketing efforts. For big titles from big publishers, the latter can be effective.

Kan Colle - ~140k
Titan (combined) - ~150k (or maybe 100k?)
Setsuna (combined) - ~60k
Street Fighter - ~40k
Edit:
Mario at Rio - ~40k
If Titan did 150k than it did better than what i predicted which is 100k so that should be not so bad even if the number is still disappointing. While SF 40k is simply sad.T_T

Welp.... Mario at Rio is the same as SFV there.

Kancolle does not exist lol.^_^

M&S 2010 on DS sold 25k FW, M&S 2012 on 3DS sold 46k FW - not sure how 40k is a bomba, considering the usual legs the series has.

Also, 100-150k FW for a game that had the potential to sell 500k LTD is not exactly something to scream about.

In japan u mean?
Yea in Japan.

I hope I'm wrong but Ultra SFIV sold more which says it all.

It'll be interesting to see if new characters, new modes and updates or tournaments give some mini sales spikes as we go on.

Or maybe people are just unaware there won't be an updated version in future.

We'll see.

To the surprise of no one, Atlus survey lists Etrian Odyssey V on Nintendo 3DS. Looks like someone jumped the gun here.

I could see it released in September, if it's announced in March (they did say in January there would be more details "when the weather warms up").

Seems weird they didn't just say it was for 3DS to begin with but then maybe they thought it was obvious?

Thanks for the survey! Was sure to fill it all out.

One of the questions asks which console would you like to play a new SMT on out of PS4-PSV-3DS.

Other than that was fairly standard. What consoles down you own? Hown long to do you play? What consoles do you want to play on? What games do you plan on buying? Social media stuff and responses to images of certain Atlus games (Persona 4 Dancing, SMT:IVF, Etrian, that NDS SMT game, 13 Sentinels, Mystery dungeon) asking what your opinion on them is.

let's say SFV ends up being a sales failure worldwide.

who here has more to lose? Capcom or Sony?

it seems to me like the only reason SFV exists is because Sony decided to put money on it so I assume costs on capcom's side have been covered a while ago. It would somewhat hurt the company's morale but I don't think capcom can be as upset if little or no money is lost.

or am I missing something here? and yeah, this is bayonetta 2 again, saleswise
