Metal Gear’s Discarded Characters

Sn4ke_911

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
This article is dedicated to all those would-be characters who never made it on-screen or who were written out of the story at the last minute. Without further ado, in no particular order, we give you Metal Gear’s discarded characters!

HERE BE SPOILERS!

Snake Man

snakeeeeee19ou5c.png

Snake-Man was cut during the development of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. His concept artwork appeared in the Japanese-exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4: Master Art Works. He was designed with armor similar to that of Solidus Snake’s with “snakehand” cables protruding from his body. He has a similar ‘bishōnen’ (‘dashing young man’) appearance to Raiden. His design (along with that of ‘Adam’) was cut early in development, a decision that concept artist Yoji Shinkawa noted was unfortunate and wasteful due to his charm.

Maximillion ‘Max’ Work

maxine_work_mgs2e1uqo.jpg

Maxine was cut during the development of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and was supposed to act as a member of Raiden’s support team, assisting him via radio during the Big Shell Incident. Max would have provided the player with in game assistance including providing information on sensor equipment and radar support. She would have done so whilst quoting the works of William Shakespeare, a character trait which was derived from that of Mei Ling (who was versed in both Shakespeare and Chinese proverbs), from the previous game: Metal Gear Solid. Like other members of Raiden’s support team, Max was set to be revealed as an AI construct, a role that would later be passed over to the character of Rosemary.

Max’s name is a reference to one of the many aliases used by the protagonist in Paul Auster’s novel ‘City of Glass’.

Karen Hojo

karen-hojod2ugs.jpg

Like Max, Karen Hojo was also cut from the final version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty although she was still included in the script for the game in The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2. Her character was cut alongside the game’s Arsenal Gear crash sequence as a sign of respect during the aftermath of 9/11.

Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima previously worked on Konami title Policenauts, from which the characters of Karen Hojo and Meryl Silverburgh were derived. Despite their similarities Kojima stated that they were not intended to be the same characters.

Hojo was included in an IDW official comic book adaptation for Metal Gear Solid 2, which was later adapted into Metal Gear Solid 2: Bande Dessinée for the PSP and PlayStation 3.

Dr. William “Doc” Wilson

william_wilson_mgs272u5x.jpg

Doc Wilson was cut during the development of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. With a background in AI (during his teens he would have created the AI that defeated ‘Deep Blue': the computer that famously beat the world chess champion of its time) Doc was to have beaten the scientist who developed Arsenal Gear’s AI system. During the Big Shell incident Doc would have provided radio assistance to Raiden offering information about the marine wildlife and environment (similar to Master Miller’s role in the previous game). As with Max, it would later have been revealed that Doc was actually an AI construct himself, a role that would later be passed over to the Colonel.

His character is echoed in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance’s character of Dr. Wilhelm Voigt, who goes by the name ‘Doktor’.

Old Boy (Old Man/Devil)

old-boy-mandpucy.jpg

Old Boy was meant to appear in the Plant Chapter of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. He was cut fairly early in the game’s development and the specifics surrounding his ‘would be’ encounter with Raiden are unknown. He would have commanded a unit of enemy soldiers called the Fallschirmjäger and it would later be revealed that he was a former mentor to Big Boss (a back story that was instead passed on to The Boss). Like Chinaman, Old Boy remains in the game’s script as a member of Dead Cell who died in 2008. Old Boy’s character design was echoed in The End, an original character in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Old Boy appeared in the 2005 IDW Sons of Liberty comic book adaptation, along with the other members of Dead Cell, prior to the group’s liquidation

Adam

adam3sunb.jpg

Adam was cut during the development of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. He was to be a member of the Russian Military. His concept art appeared in the Japanese-exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4: Master Art Works alongside that of Snake Man. Adam’s uniform was designed to resemble that of a Russian commando wearing a balaclava. Concept artist Yoji Shinakawa commented that, like Snake Man, Adam would have a ‘dashing young man’ appearance when unmasked. His character (along with that of ‘Snake Man’) was cut due to him not fitting in with the finalized story.

Chinaman

chinamanfnuwc.gif

Chinaman was written to appear in the Plant chapter of Metal Gear Solid 2 as Dead Cell’s CQB specialist and mystic. He was killed six months before the events of the Big Shell Incident.

Chinaman was to have felt a deep hatred for America after being abducted by a black market adoption agency and sold to American buyers. He would spent his life as a subject of discrimination in New York before running away to Chinatown. His hatred of America was supposed to be the driving force behind his participation in the Big Shell Incident. He was to have battled Raiden in one of the Big Shell’s filtration chambers. Chinaman would boast abilities that reoccur throughout the Metal Gear series including a tattoo that would come to life and attack at will (a trait he shares with Vulcan Raven). After he was scrapped, some of his skills were given to Vamp, including his ability to walk across water and up vertical walls.

His character was based on actor Jet Li, and remains in the game’s script, where he is described as having died during Dead Cell’s liquidation. In addition, in the flashbacks of Dead Cell’s liquidation, Vamp was seen cradling an injured member of Dead Cell, although it is never made clear whether the person in question is supposed to be Chinaman or Old Boy.

I hadn't seen the art for the scrapped MGS4 characters before. Going in that direction would have been infinitely preferable to the B&B garbage...

Cool. The only one I knew about in this list was Chinaman. Looks like they were trying to go for more of a MGS1 style support cast in 2, interesting.

I didn't think Kojima would be so discriminate in regards to the characters in his games given that the last major metal gear game featured a character called HOT COLDMAN

Max would have been great. Would have reinforced the notion that the Big Shell incident was a simulation of Shadow Moses. I hated that aspect of the story, but since they went for it she makes a better choice than Rose.

How could they scrap an entire character in MGS2 because of 9/11? The game released two months after that and there's no way you could make a change that significant to the story.

And on the sixth day the LORD David Bowie created man and woman in His image. And he saw that it was good. On the seventh day the LORD created videogames so that He might take the bloody day off for once.

Considering her only appearance was for a small "gag" during the game's epilogue, it was very easy to scrap her.

She was just a news reporter reporting on the Arsenal Gear crash, not massively important.

From Metal Gear Wiki:
The day after the end of the Big Shell Incident in 2009, Karen Hojo reported on the aftermath of the Arsenal Gear crash in Manhattan, more specifically on the Statue of Liberty's relocation from Liberty Island to Ellis Island. She also inquired if Lady Liberty would finally get her green card.

Not exactly cut, but he was definitely a wasted opportunity. He (and the Successor project) was an interesting plotline and killing them both at the end of the game was unfortunate

If she only appeared in the Arsenal Gear sequence, then her absence in the final game is an understandable consequence of its removal.

Wait, Rosemary was an AI?

One of them, yes.

I wish Shinkawa would do art for other games outside of Kojima's. Not saying it's wasted, but the gaming world needs more Shinkawa

He's an amazing artist, and I'd love to see him work on settings other than Metal Gear. Such a shame about ZOE3...

It'd be interesting to see a remaster of sorts for MGS2. Feels like a lot was cut for both technical reasons and subject matter. Not to mention the entire angle of the plot we missed from Snake's perspective.

I don't think substantial changes to the main game are required, but restoring the cut sequences would be very welcome. Though they probably never will at this point; after going through so many rereleases with no alterations.

I often think about how much cooler mgs2 would be if some of the cut content was left in. Like half of manhattan being destroyed by GW and Raiden cutting the flag to cover Solidus' body. And honestly the cut characters seem way cooler than the bosses that ended up in the finalized versions of mgs2 and 4.

Vamp, Fortune, Fatman, and Solidus would have still been in the game even if Old Boy and Chinaman were in.

Some of Vamp's powers would be changed though because they were taken from Chinaman, and if you follow the original concept then Vamp would be female.

The cut MGS2 characters would have made the twist about Big Shell echoing Shadow Moses make a lot more sense.

Part of the reason some of that stuff was cut was probably due to MGS2 coming in HOT. Read this to have an idea of how badly they crunched to get it out

Returning from their holiday vacations, the team knew that 2001 would be a tough year for everyone, especially given MGS2's epic scope and the promise of a late-2001 release. Given Matsuhana's concern about the state of the project, he proposed to Kojima a method of checking the team's progress. "What I wanted to do was compare our progress on MGS2 to its predecessor," he recollects. "So we'd say, 'OK, MGS2 is 10 months from release--where were we 10 months before the release of the previous game?'" Kojima liked the idea, thinking it would provide a concrete way of determining how much was left to do.

Unfortunately, neither Matsuhana nor Kojima liked the result of their study.

In 2001 Mr. Kojima grew concerned that the game would not be finished in time. "I spent about a week doing a comparison and contrast between the projects," says Matsuhana. "And I really didn't like the answer I came up with. We realized we were desperately behind with Metal Gear Solid 2." Asked exactly how far behind they were, Matsuhana is embarrassed and just repeats the phrase "very desperately behind." To put it in context, he later says that he was "certain the game would not be released in 2001. We were going to do everything we could to finish the game, but the prospects were very grim at the start of the year."

Nice findings.

Only knew about Chinaman. Those MGS4 characters are interesting. Makes me wonder what that game was going to be like originally.

Snake Man seemed like he could have been interesting, especially due to his design resembling a mix of Solidus's suit and Raiden's body.

I knew about Old Boy and China Man, but the rest are new to me.

Thanks for posting! I re-read about these on the Wiki every now and then. ;_;

Too bad she didn't shurfife. Honestly, though a lot of what she probably would have contributed ended up getting passed on to Rose, I would have loved for her to be a part of the game.
