Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes gameplay demo

One of many themes Kojima tackles in MGS especially MGS2 is passing knowledge to future generation, and I really want to see that play out in an actual game.

There were people who didn't play MGS3 :o

Well, I only played MGS2, but it was one of my favorite games as a wee-feller. I drifted away from gaming for a long while, and when I came back it was only PC stuff <FPS,RTS>, and console gaming was relegated to RPGs. Now that I have a big TV with Surround-sound, I feel like I can finally enjoy the console experience. It's been on my To-Do for a long while, this video brought it up past playing through the .Hack series and the Xenosaga series.

Does MGS1 hold up well? Kind of want to get into the series, and would like to start with the original and then move my way to the HD collection. I would ask about Twin Snakes, but its incredibly expensive, so I rather play through the first on my PS1. Also, about how long is it?

Actually my dream for a post-MGS4 game is Sunny grows up to be the next perfect soldier. She deals with the chaos left by a world without government.

Fairly short, you can finish it in 5-10 hours.

I'd like something set between MGS1 and 2 (not MG Mobile lol) or maybe between 2 and 4 if they bring back Solid Snake. Otherwise, something with Sunny would be great. You could literally go in any direction with her story.

So ideas for MGS after GZ:

- MG1/MG2 remake as 1 game.
- Another Boss game, possibly WWII based.
- MGS far off future with new characters.
- Metal Gear Sunny.

I would be happy with any one of those :D

Remakes of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 are all that's really needed. They don't fit in with how the series has evolved at all anymore.

It seems that Ennio Morricone - Here's to You is getting a lot of hits on Youtube thanks to Kojima!

Is it really possible that we didn't get a proper HD video of this to download? IGN's HD stream is pretty crappy.

I loved that song ever since Life Aquatic. It was also featured prominently in MGS4. Strange that a lot of people seem to have forgotten that.

I'm hoping the Playstation Store will have the video this week, the quality on those are always way better than even official Youtube 1080p ones.

So...

1.) GZ takes place after PW
2.) GZ is a prelude to MGS5
3.) PW is MGS5

Ohgawd my brain

No, Peace Walker is not Metal Gear Solid 5. Portable Ops was not MGS4. Rising is not MGS6. And Ground Zeroes is not MGS7.

These games are not named proper MGS mainline titles because they differentiate pretty heavily from the core gameplay. MGS2 used many of MGS1's mechanics and even some scenarios. MGS3 used many of MGS2's assets and gameplay while adding it's own unique flavor. MGS4 was a more wide-open MGS3 in terms of gameplay, sporting the 3D camera from Subsistence.

Portable Ops, Peace Walker, Rising, and Ground Zeroes are not spinoffs, they are canon. But they are not traditional MGS gameplay. Peace Walker is a mission-based game with a big focus on co-op. Ground Zeroes sports open-world gameplay.

Actually my dream for a post-MGS4 game is Sunny grows up to be the next perfect soldier. She deals with the chaos left by a world without government.

Otacon specifically says that the virus Sunny wrote only destroys the part of the government that included the Patriot AI and the war economy. Basic human necessities and structures were kept intact so the world would not plunge into anarchy like Liquid Ocelot wanted. No chaos, at least not on any sort of large scale. Rising will highlight more of what the world is like post-MGS4.

We've all already played a remake of Metal Gear 2

it's called Metal Gear Solid

It's funny to think about it that way, because we also played two remakes of Metal Gear Solid as well. One was called Twin Snakes and the other was called the S3 Plan. MG2 has been remade three times lol (semi-kidding of course)

I still want my Sunny game!!!

MGS always has such an amazing cast of boss characters so I look forward to what unit BB will face in GZ.
And as a huge Vamp fan it would be cool if we see Kid Vamp as one of the recruited child soldiers :P

MGS2 bosses were the worst in the series. I really hope BB encounters a group like the Cobra Unit from MGS3 in MGS:GZ.

Fortune, Fatman and Vamp were amazing and well integrated into the story. Can't say the same for Cobra unit except for Sorrow. Don't get me wrong I love the Cobra's but they just didn't have much to do or say for such legendary figures from WWII. BnB's were treated similar but it was understandable because they were victims of war. Cobra Unit just came off as lackeys despite the status, and saying their names all the time? What is this pokemon?

The Dead Cell members were not only great characters but they were an integral part of the main story. They had a purpose, unlike MGS4's B&B unit who were only there to annoy Snake, get the player horny and for Drebin to tell some tearjerker story.

Even the Cobra Unit were just a random bunch of stage bosses with little to no backstory or personality.

..Unless of course you're talking about the actual bossfights.

yeah ive been watching playthroughs of metal gear and metal gear 2 msx on youtube and they share a ton of similarities with mgs

theyd have to change just about everything if they remade them to keep them interesting

been playing mgs1 again and it holds up fine for me

The bosses have been getting progressively worse since Metal Gear Solid. Foxhound and Dead Cell were filled with classic characters. Beauty and the Beast Unit, not so much.

Hey, wait. It's the 25th anniversary of Metal Gear! Shouldn't we have a big ol' "GAF Plays The Metal Gear Series" thread?

There is definitely a downward slope in terms of boss characters relevance to the story since MGS1 and I hope such characters are better intergrated in GZ. But saying that I had little problem with BnB's, their back story could have been better handled but I like how they were portrayed as victims of war hiding behind their shell. For a 'final' game to wrap up the Solid Snake saga I feel they were apt characters.

I think they had the best boss battles, perhaps. I don't think they were the best characters. Am I in the minority on that? I didn't feel like the Cobra Unit was very well fleshed out.

Gameplay > *

Bosses are only as good as their contribution to having a great boss battle. Everything else is secondary.

a game with Boss or Sunny would be great since it would introduce a female lead.

if mgs had become a PC franchise, we'd probably have an expansion episode featuring Otacon sneaking through some metal gear facility supporting Snake....imagine playing as Otacon and using the MKII robot to bring supplies to snake....running around unarmed of course!

I want MGS 5 to have Sunny as the lead, with Snake giving her advice over the codec. Would be awesome. Basically a whole new story, but with possible ties to previous games since Sunny is Olga's kid.

If you never played it back in the day it'll take a while to get used to the mechanics, but MGS1 is still one of the best games I've ever played. I went back to it a few weeks ago and had my mind blown by this one scene early on where it does one of those seamless cutscene to gameplay transitions that most games can't even manage today.

So I was just thinking about the series and I pondered something; I think the reason that 3 never was as special to me is because it never felt like a watershed game to me. I mean, MGS 1, I never played it personally, but that's a fucking watershed game. Absolutely innovative for so many reasons, and just was something to behold for its time. MGS 2 was an absolute game changer as well, it set high bars for how cinematic games could be, and it changed how I personally would view gaming in general forever. 3 just felt like 2 but completely refined and perfected. I know that makes it the better technical game, if just from a gameplay perspective, but it never had that special "this is fucking huge" kind of moment for me. MGS 4 was something else for it's time that was pretty crazy; I would say it was a game changer in many regards, especially compared to 3, but not as radical as say MGS 1 or 2.

Ground Zeroes looks to be something radical as well. The graphics are absolutely mind-blowing, it's open world, or at least semi-open world, it's style is something almost completely new and different from past games, and all these elements are likely going to change how we play the series forever. I mean, I still can't believe the game is going to be at least open-world to the degree that there are drivable vehicles in it.
