Metal Gear Solid HD Collection - TGS 2011 Screens (Tons)

Will buy this just to have a version of Peace Walker that uses dual analog sticks. Also, all three games with Trophies? Count me in!

Snake Tales are confirmed to be in, I remember from the conference. Also, remember it's not just VR, but Alternative Missions as well.
Of course, but I just count them as being under the VR umbrella, since they're accessed from the same part of the game.

Still, this is looking like an awesome version of two great games. I may even double dip on this for both platforms. The last time I did that was MGS2: Sub on PC, Xbox and PS2.

Edit: Actually, that's a lie. I got Soulcalibur II on Xbox and Gamecube.

I must say, looking at these shots, I do think MGS2 holds up better. The more distant camera angles and sharp world design really stands out in HD. MGS3 tries to go for a much more natural settings and the PS2 can't quite deliver.

You don't remember the hairy pits in the original?

back when it came out the internet was abuzz with that fact

Lol. I remember that being some kind of a big deal when the demo dropped. So funny at the time.

So glad they got all the VR Missions in there. I spent so much time on them and never finished. I have to complete it this time.
Itd be awesome if they could squeeze the Document of MGS2 in this somehow. An HD character model viewer would be great. Thats a long shot though.

I even remember being at school and everyone was talking about the hairy armpits, lol.

MGS2 looks amazing. I think it's aged better than 3 even, because its more mechanical/built environments aren't as dependent on high polycount and texture resolution to look good as 3's organic ones.

I'm really happy I took the time to fill out that FB survey (as it was really decent length and good questions). I stressed how I loved the MGS series, but that PW was the first I never finished and explained how I even bought a PSP for it and I would rebuy a port in an instance. I just couldn't work the controls well, despite loving the setup, the mechanics, and the management parts. It was a real shame, well besides some of the creepy Paz stuff. I really do appreciate Konami doing this.

In gameplay, MGS3 will look great. In fact, I don't think it will look much worse than MGS4.

I'm torn between the super widescreen and original aspect ratio option. On one hand, I'm a whore for OAR with movies & tv, but on the other hand I think the super widescreen mode will help the visuals hold up better since the camera won't be as zoomed in-- but theres also the potential that the super widescreen ruins some cutscenes if KP doesn't clean up all of the stuff that wasn't meant to be shown originally.

2+3 looks great.

PW looks shit.

I'd say PW and 2 look pretty crappy, but that's just me. Especially 2 never appealed to me with the blocky environments and the lack in variety of locations.

3 looks allright, allthough the higher Res isn't all that flattering to the textures or character models. Those closeup shots were clearly meant for lower fidelity displays lol.

Still, should be an easy cash grab for Konami and a good way for fans to replay the games on current systems.

'Tis a bit of a lazy job, it's like they just (which it is) smoothed the whole thing and called it a day. Annoyed by that, they could have rethought the textures, models, I mean, it's not THAT complicated is it?!!!

I think it would be a big undertaking to bring up everything up to MGS4 visuals but I think they could've spent some time just smoothing out some of the models, especially in Peace Walker.

I think part of it is they originally started building the game for PS1, so it had a very simple and clean art style.

Gonna have to see a source as I've literally never heard of this before

Textures maybe, but once you start messing with the models and 3D assets you reach a slippery slope down to completely remaking the games which is a pretty unreasonable undertaking. This actually looks better than almost any of the other HD ports so far.

Shame that they didn't upgrade the textures :(

I am kind of surprised TTS isn't being included.
Nintendo probably said no.

MGS2 is probably my favorite looking HD port next to ICO but Im pretty sure ICO HD actually has some redone textures and whatnot so its not a completely fair comparison.

MGS2 has such a clean look. Its very appealing to look at. The Tanker in HD is going to be amazing. Still the best rain effects Ive ever seen in a game.

I think both games are pretty much perfect as is. Only thing I can think of that should have been looked at would be the sort of jerky lip-syncing in MGS2.

Have you seen other HD ports?

What makes THIS port so great is the fact that 1) they improved performance dramatically 2) the image quality is very clean 3) they actually re-did the UI in higher resolution and 4) they've implemented proper 5.1 audio (as far as I know).

Re-doing textures and models is an entirely different beast and much more difficult and time consuming. Once you start touching up one thing, the rest will look out of place. They could have tossed some gun models from MGS4 in there, for instance, but they would really stick out against everything else. These games are designed with a very consistent aesthetic and changing assets could spoil that if they didn't re-do just about everything (which would require too much time and money).

edit: it's not true.

According to the 8-4 Play podcast MGS3 HD apparently only runs at 30fps.

Oh well, my wallet can breathe a little easier this year. ONLY reason I was gonna buy this was because of MGS3@60fps.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa, hold the phone. Seriously? Only 30 fps? Why has it been posted otherwise directly in trailers?! That literally makes no sense to me.

That definitely changes my opinion on this port.

So MGS2 @ 60, MGS3 @ 30? What is PW?

Jumping off the George Washington Bridge in HD. Booya!

MGS2 ends at the Tanker Mission for me.
And that makes it about as long as a current gen game, so it holds up even better.

what??

Wasn't kojima making a big deal out of finally getting to deliver mgs3 in 60 fps a couple months back??

Oh sorry apparently there was a mistake.

I got the info from here:

After personally listening to the podcast, it seems Stuburns is incapable of following a conversation. When they mentioned the framerate they were talking about SotC. :P

Well his penis is not long for this world, so its understandable the stress is getting to him.

Might be waiting for the Vita versions to enjoy so I don't burn out on metal gear replays too soon.

To clarify:
60FPS60FPS60FPS60FPS60FPS60FPS60FPS60FPSb]60FPS[/b]60FPS60FPS60FPS60FPS60FPS60FPS60FPS and so forth

If I was to replay the entire MG series, what would be the best way to go through them in terms of story?

-MGS3
-MGS:PW
-Metal Gear 1
-Metal Gear 2
-Metal Gear Solid
-Metal Gear Solid 2
-Metal Gear Solid 4

Is that about right?

No.

1.- MGS1
2.- MGS2
3.- MGS3

MG1 and 2's "stories" are inconsequential to the Solid series, and anything of note that happened there is brought up in MGS1. But if you must play them play them before MGS1.

Document of MGS2 had some of the PS1 models I believe. The part of the cleaner art style being due to the fact it was on PS1 is just speculation on my part. If you look at the PS1 models though, they have almost an anime look to them.

MGS2 has always been a PS2 game. I haven't loaded up Document in a while but the few MGS1 models(pretty much just two environments) in there are for experimentation purposes as far as I can remember. There's also a Snake model done in Shinkawa's art style(no, it doesn't look anywhere as awesome as that sounds).

Those models are there due to experimentation, not because they were working on a PSX version of the game. MGS2 was ALWAYS intended for PS2.

I wish software companies made ultra hires textures to turn their games future-proof. Why not? They only had to downsize those textures to make their games. Think about a RE4 originally made at 4320p.

Never noticed how much Snake from MGS3 looks like Tom Brady. Cant wait to reply these, they should put what the cut from MGS2 back in though.
