Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (PS2) - U.S. release official

There seems to be some confusion about this, so let me clear things up as much as I can.

- You get MGS1 for the PS1 on two discs (CDs), just like the original release. You need a PS1 memory card to save.
- You get MGS2: Substance, just like how originally released on PS2. This is a great deal, as this game tended to go for an above average price since it was rarer compared to original non-Substance MGS2 release.
- You get disc 1 of MGS3: Subsistence, which is Snake Eater with new 3D camera. Since it's only disc 1 and disc 2 is not included, you don't get bonuses like MGO (servers are shut down anyway), MG1 and MG2, Boss Rush, and whatever other bonus features were on disc 2.
- All of these games will work on 20, 60, or 80GB PS3s.
- $30 price tag

GameStop says it comes with MG1 and MG2.

Also, the memory card thing is fucking stupid.

Gamestop is wrong according to other sources, like Kotaku I believe, but most people are waiting for an official announcement from Konami themselves.

Payton has made it very clear, the package is exactly what Strider2K99 said it was (well actually not quite, Substance came with the document of MGS2, this collection doesn't).

MG and MG2 are not included in this collection.

There you go. Still won't deter many fans, but probably deterred 25% of potential customers, I'm guessing

The Document of MGS2 didn't come out on Substance in the US, it was a separate thing you could buy before Substance even came out.

Well Twin Snakes is just a port of MGS1. The only real difference is just an upgrade in graphics. I'd just buy the collection.
I thought it had extra things added in? Or is it just a simple port with graphical updates?

It's more than just a port. It's a full remake with new graphics, redone cutscenes, MGS2 gameplay, and some new bonuses. If you're an MGS fan or new to the series, it's definitely worth it IMO.

However, keep in mind that the original PS1 version is the "real" version as recognized by Hideo Kojima himself.

Yeah I know, but it was in the PAL version, and I just thought it was worth noting because it's included in the Japanese boxset and some people might be under the impression it's was going to be included.

God, our boxset is so weak compared to the Japanese one, that one is just so awesome. :O

More then likely they pulled that description from the original release for Subsistence, so I wouldn't count on it. The fact that they didn't modify MGS1 (to put it on a dvd, save to ps2 mem card, etc) implies that this is probably just a re-packaging of the original discs.

If they did indeed pulled description from original release, then MGO should have been mentioned.

So true. ;_;

I'm not buying the Essential Collection because I already own all the games included as originally released, but I would have double dipped if Document of MGS2 was included.

my purchase depends on the boxart. if they screw this up, i wont buy.

i already have all the original releases, some even x2 from different regions.

If they would just remove the 3 seperare box's off the main sleeve it would be perfect. That isn't the final box according to websites, hopefully we get to see it soon. Comes out in just a week...I already pre-ordered it off Amazon, so I'm getting it either way.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but last time I checked my pal ps3 (60 gig) from around launch in Australia didn't handle mgs3:subsistence too well. Lots of slowdown in the bigger areas to the point where it became unplayable. Mgs2:substance is quite a bit better but still had a decent amount of slowdown when fighting fatman on the roof. Does anyone if the backward compatibility for these games has improved ?

Question: Have details for the MGO beta been announced? Like if I buy this thingie, do I get to play in the MGO beta?

I bought the Japanese collection so I'm not sure if I should double dip, although I am kind of getting a collectors bug with MGS stuff lately.

Wait why do you need a PS1 memory card? You can just use the PS3 HDD right?

yeah, PS3 has virtual PS2 and PS1 memory cards.

but if you have a PS2, you need a PS1 memory card.

If you preorder this, you get Metal Gear Saga vol 2 and you are automatically in the MGO beta.

and have they officially said that there will be no Metal Gear 1 or 2? or have they just said no 2nd disc? I dont know why the gamestop site has it listing both them and boss rush but not online.

Ok, what is Metal Gear Saga Vol 2?

And do I have to preorder at Gamestop or can I do it at Best Buy, etc.?

i'm pretty sure saga 2 and mgo beta are for pre-orders on mgs4, not essentials.

my mistake, I was actually looking it up to confirm it.

I dont remember exactly what I heard on the KPR, but MGSv2 is the second volume of the preorder bonus for Subsistance that came out a while ago.

If true about MGS3 that kinda sucks. MG1 and MG2 were nice, but there was also the secret theater on the second disc which was pretty funny.

I kind of wish Konami would put Metal Gear 1 and 2 translated on PSN or something, both for $5. It is understandable that they wouldent include PO or GB (wow, I just realized Ghost Babel...clever), but Metal Gear 1 and 2 are essential.

Just went to 2 Gamestops, neither carried PSone memory cards anymore. Looks like ebay is the only option, unless some gaffer has some extras they want to sell.

Do you not have any stores in your area that sell retro games?

Wait, why do you need PS1 memory cards?

EDIT:Never mind, you can't save to PS2 mem cards with PS1 games, just copy them right?

You know, I still havent played through Portable Ops. Is it really that important to prepare for MGS4? I'm too lazy to play it though.

Sounds awesome, I'm there.

Also, although 'technically' we should be including MG1/2, since they are a bitch to play through for a lot of gamers and not even 100% canon anymore, there'll just be a big MG1/2 story summary before the start of MGS1 week.

Me too. I hope I have the time to keep up. Graduating from grad school this year. :\

Congrats! Yeah, I'll be finishing up my last finals for year 1 law school on May 9th, just in time for MGS mode before I jump into a summer job :D

Yeah, it has a few major plot points for the series as a whole and some solid character development. The gameplay is not anywhere near as good as the main games, but it's decent enough to live with to see the great story stuff.

You could always youtube all the cutscenes, but it's a short enough game you should probably just play through it.
