Metal Gear Solid V Spoiler Free Impressions Thread

Fuck.

I really want to ask something cause it blew my mind when it happened earlier but I have no idea how to word it.

Don't want to enter the spoiler thread either.

Day 1 of MGSV over.

If I were to sum my opinions up it's a fantastic game, but I don't know if it's a special one. Parts, certainly, but the whole?

It feels like a western studio made a Kojima game, if that makes any sense.

My first impression is being unable to play the game. Mandatory install on the 360 version but despite doing that, the game disc still asks me to install data...

There isn't anything like it so, I can't see how it isn't a special one but I can also see where you're coming from. I mean having BB being silent most of the time is such a big change from what we usually are used to and that's just one thing.

My hype for this game has returned to absurdly high levels. Why is August taking so damn long like goddamn. Between the period of July-December this is literally the only month where I had nothing to look forward to.

Well I guess I have to beat Peace Walker now.

Sorry if this has been asked, but is the original theme from MGS2 & MGS3 (which was previously omited from 4 and PW due to legal issues) present and remixed in this games theme?

These impressions have me like.

The wait is almost over. I haven't been this hyped for a game in many moons.

Most likely not. They're not allowed to use that theme anymore because of said legal issues and I doubt Konami has done anything to fix that.

I remember exactly the excrutiating pain of waiting for mgs 2 3 and 4 these last 14 years, I honestly have never been more excited than this one.

When I bought it today, i only had the time for the intro...

THIS IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE BEST OPENING FOR A METAL GEAR GAME EVER.

Am I the only one who finishes a mission and doesn't want to do the next one for fear of moving too fast even though I'm only up to mission 4 and there are a billion more hours left in the game? :lol

I'm tempted to go back to the first two missions and re-do the side requirements in those to 100% them.

OCD, not good in a game this size but I get this way in every massive game.

I'm with you bro, I'm 4 hours in and I already don't want it to end, I want to savor every second man. How many times in your life can you say "i'm playing a MGS game for the first time"

I keep reading how empty the world feals. What I want to know is, can we simply explore, just horse back ride anywhere discover things? easter eggs? are there caves you can find and just go exploring? yes i know it's metal gear but ya I like exploring and finding stuff.

I've been ridiculously hyped for every new Metal Gear release but I don't think any game, from any series, could ever come close to the level of hype and anticipation I had for Metal Gear Solid 2. The build up to that was insane.

With that said, all these incredibly positive posts about the opening of the game have me drooling, roll on Tuesday!

Okay, I've got a question for people who've gotten through some of the story. To me, Peace Walker was a hot steaming pile of garbage primarily because of its garbage story, and what it did to The Boss and Snake. One of my biggest gripes with MGSV (aside from them ditching Hayter and making BB sound/look like a completely new person) is that it's a direct sequel to PW, so what I'm wondering is if the story in TPP does a good job of rectifying what PW did to the characters/plot, or if it at least doesn't ruin them any further. Can anyone fill me in in the most non spoilery way possible?

Those lucky gaffers who play the game, how interesting are side ops? Is there any kind of story associated with them or is it just generic stuff like save that prisoner or collect that intel?

Is there anything to keep you invested in side ops besides gameplay and unit/ equipment improvement?

I will say the game looks PHENOMINAL. When you first get control of snake on horseback the environment is petty jaw dropping.

I do HATE snakes voice though. He doesn't stand out from the cast at all. I can't tell if it's him talking half the time. In fact miller ocelot and snake all sound very similar.
There better have been a good reason for ditching hayter.

I mean, maybe you could explain what you mean in detail, or some nuance besides the usual easy signers of "its open world"

It has a lot of busy work, for one, without really throwing interesting things at you. It's weird; I can't see the distinction between most of the Main Missions and the Side Ops. Of the 12 (or so) missions I've played there were probably 4 spectacular ones. The rest were well designed, but I'll forget them. They didn't have much story going on, for instance.

Perhaps the same could be said about previous Metal Gear Solid games, but this has the distinction of being mission based. And most of the missions feel like AAA open world stuff. There's a dichotomy there.

I love it as a game, so far. But am I having a duel, then jumping into a cave, then fighting a man shooting bees from his mouth? Not to give anything away, but it feels to me like a Metal Gear Solid game split up and seperated with a handful of well designed standard stuff.

It's like open world Splinter Cell more often than it's like MGS, IMO. I find that fun, and so I'm sure MGSV will be my game of the year (so far), but just that dilutes it as a Metal Gear Solid special kind of experience.

When the MGS moments come they are the fucking best, though.

Man, it's really hard to talk about this in a non spoiler way, but I'm with you that I completely disliked Peace Walker. [If you never played peace walker, stop reading now] story is garbage, Kaz is an ok character but that's about it, and don't get me started on Paz, Chico and all the other weird characters, also the thing about recreating Boss with an AI is a bit forced, even for a MGS game and it just felt like filler content to make a PSP game that for some reason got picked up by the fans.

Now... There was a few things that PW did extremly well, and I felt that Kojima prod identified those things and expanded on them with TPP.
In a very weird way, and people are welcome to argue with me on this, TPP feels like a next-gen remake of PW and as someone that didn't like PW at all, I am actually enjoying the SHIT out of TPP, mainly because of the stellar gameplay, because honestly I couldn't give two fucks about Kaz.

As for the story of TPP compared to PW, I'm not far a long to make a judgement, but so far it sounds way better, shame you need to hear those tapes to absolve it all, I kind of miss the codec moments but TPP is MGS reinvented and we need to live with that.

About 3-4 hours in here.

Completed 3 missions.

I'm very, very impressed. The game is absolutely fantastic. My main points thus far;

1.) It's gorgeous. The Fox Engine just has a really lovely, almost "soft" quality to it. Texture quality etc is excellent and the lighting is fantastic. I've not seen any particular weather conditions or anything yet, but in broad daylight the game looks fantastic. For those wondering, it's significantly nicer than Ground Zeroes was in the daytime.

2.) "Kojima Detail". For an open world environment and setting, it's incredibly rich in detail. Each area I've come across so far feels like its own place with its own set of challenges to consider. Everything from the environmental design to the buildings that can be explored, climbed on or traversed around, can be used to your advantage. On missions, even a small incidental outpost or village takes on its own importance and challenge. It feels like absolutely nothing has gone to waste even in areas this size.

3.) The audio tapes are excellent. I'm just listening to them with a cup of tea now while I post this. There's definitely back and forth like a codec conversation, and Snake talks a fair bit in some of them. They've already provided some really great insight to the early going of the game. Most are short too, generally between 1-3 minutes, so they're not a drag or inconvenience to listen to.

4.) Likewise, the games soundtrack and use of licensed music is wonderful. Used correctly it can pretty damn funny too. Silently extracting a high value target completely undiscovered, then fultoning him into the ether, all while
Kids in America
plays on a nearby radio, was absolutely hilarious.

5.) Yeah, the game is massive. There are sub-missions to complete within main missions, the mission scoring system as per Ground Zeroes, Side Ops, Mother Base.. there's a crazy amount of stuff going on with the game. Expanding Mother Base, using it to research new equipment and weapons, and then replaying earlier missions for better scores or more objectives using that equipment, is something that feels like it has almost limitless potential. And I say this before even seeing any of the other "buddies" and having only researched a cardboard box up to now. The scale of the game, at both an outward facing and deeper level, is enormous.

6.) The prologue is slow and I feel goes on a little long. I was glad when it ended. But once the game gets going, it pulls you off the leash pretty quickly. Once the core gameplay starts, you're pretty much straight in with two feet, aside from a couple of very small cutscenes and some tutorial elements. A bit like Ground Zeroes, once you're dropped into an area, that area is yours with very few interruptions until you're ready for extraction. So far, I think the balance between gameplay and narrative/cutscenes has been excellent since the prologue.

Very impressed thus far. Can't wait to keep digging.

Sounds amazing, thanks for those impressions.

I'm going to stream later. Will I get banned from twitch or YouTube?
Twitch are still shutting down the streams. I don't know if you actually get banned or not. Considering people have the game via legitimate means it would be ridiculously unfair.

I'm thinking about starting my stream or working on my cqc video. What you guys think?

From Konami's ToraShiro.

Any content that isn't specifically OK'd by HQ is subject to takedown prior to 9/1. Streams, VODs, videos, all of it.

We understand you are excited, but ask that you respect the street date for distribution.

So what's with the "bond level" in the postmission stats? Is that increased by sticking with the given character through the mission?

No idea but I've seen people say they've put like 10 hours in and are only like 5% done or something!

Keep in mind that completing the game probably doesn't even come close to 100% completion. I'm in a similar boat with limited gaming time, but it seems like the gameplay loop of this game works for both shorter and longer gaming sessions. The Witcher 3 is an open world game that I found intimidating in scale and felt as if a short play session wasn't even worth it. As long as I can sit down for an hour and complete a story mission or a few side-ops in MGSV I'm happy. I can take a few months to beat the game, it's not going anywhere.

Those of you who have the game, does this game work if I've only got an hour or two at a time max to play it?

Absolutely. Side Ops, Managing your MB or just going to free roam to collect things is more than enough for an hour or two. I wouldn't jump in a story based mission though just incase since these tend to be unpredictable.

I've not touched any Side Ops yet, but I've just noticed one of the ones available to me now is to extract an interpreter.

Having an interpreter at Mother Base seems important. Kaz alludes to as much if you try and get information out of guards during the first mission, who only speak Russian.

That's a pretty good example of what the Side Ops probably represent on the whole. Additional support items to advance and enhance other aspects of your overall mission. Completing that Side Op, extracting the interpreter, and then replaying the first mission with the benefit of being able to squeeze information out of the guards like in GZ, is an obviously helpful benefit to taking on the side missions.

Well that's worrisome... How am I supposed to progress if I never have enough time to play story missions?
