Metroid Prime: Federation Force - Story Trailer

Blast Ball is good fun though, it just suffers from being an extension to a game and that online ping can really mess up the feeling of controlling the ball how you want.
I know, it's irony because Blast Ball is just a part of FF thus most likely just inferior from lacking the rest of the game.

I picked this up early, I'll leave some impressions later today

Yes, in the US. My local store (mom and pop type) got this and kof on Friday. They sold out of kof, still had quite a few federation force.
Bought two so I could try with my son.

Nintendo : let's make a Mature Metroid game with Feelingz

Nintendo : OK if u don't like Mature then here is a chibi cute one
Fans: The Hell is that?

Nintendo : I don't get u guys what do you want, ok if you want a 2D Metroid game you'll get it

Releases Super New Metroid planet (proudly developed by Arzest, Music by New Yoshi Island team)

The embargo drops this thursday (same day as the game comes out) so I'm not that surprised you can already find this in stores.

It's not like Nintendo really cares about it anyway...

Watch this review better than No Man's Sky.

I can see that actually.

Other than Metroid other M/Prime Pinball, there's plenty of room to get better average than No Man's Sky (>=70ish) and less than the other metroid games, with Hunters being the lowest other than the two mentioned, at 85. I can imagine it falling around the mid 70s, putting it as the lowest metroid but over NMS, yeah.

They'd have cared had the whole public perception of the game not been a disaster from start to finish. They know when the writing is on the wall. Short of being around the best game ever in the series (unlikely...) there isn't any way for this not to tank.

God this looks so generic. I don't own a 3DS. Do all 3ds games look this dated?

No. For example, IronFall Invasion is another 3DS shooter, except it was made by 2.5 people, runs at 60 fps, is an eShop title, and looks like this:

If a Nintendo game comes out in the 3DS' sixth year and looks like Federation Force, it's not because of the 3DS.

Some quick impressions: keep in mind I've only played about an hour. Tutorial (mandatory) and the first mission.

Tutorial does a pretty good job getting you used to the controls. There are only two configs:

I like the gyro controls, but I feel like i need to get used to them. I'm used to dual stick controls when playing shooters, but the nub feels a bit weird and the precision is much better with gyro so far.
Tutorial starts off with aiming, then has you do a shooting gallery test. Next is movement tutorial, and another test in which you defend a stationary ally against a few waves of enemies.

There is some short story exposition as they transition you to the hub, which has you selecting your load out and mission. Story is light at this point: you are stationed at the Bermuda system which has three planets you are watching over. First mission is an extermination mission.

Customization: you can equip "MODs" which are like consumable skills. You can also change your voice (language, gender, pitch), communication phrases (pre-made, but you can select which ones) and paint job (can use Amiibos to unlock. I only got the generic unlock and the Samus ones, but I have a lot of Amiibos. I'll try more later)

Solo play: There is a Lone Wolf MOD you can equip when playing solo that increases your damage input, making it easier for solo play. You can also activate drones that act like Gradius Options which float around you and fire at enemies, which also helps solo play.

Gameplay:
fun so far. Starts with picking your load out (so far I have repair capsules, missiles, super missile and flame shot). Each item has a certain weight. You can only carry as much as your mech will allow. You can get MODs that will increase capacity.
First mission did evoke some Metroid prime feelings of being in an abandoned space station with some enemies around. There is no scanning, but there are stations that you can activate to give you log entries. There are puzzle solving elements involved (getting to some locations to activate switches), and there are some hidden things to find (first mission is on an ice planet, and they recommend you bring the fire shot... I found some hidden areas that gave me MODs. MODs are unspecified when collected.
At the end, you get scored and get medals based on your score. All MODs that were collected are revealed at the end. This loot aspect excites me.
After the mission there was a small debrief and they have some dialogue leading to the next mission.

So far, I like it. I can imagine it being a lot more fun with more people, but the isolated feeling you get with Metroid was present in solo play. I am looking forward to getting more items and MODs.

Any other specific questions, let me know

I still can't get over the boxart. The marketing department give as much of a shit as the rest of us.

This is really good to hear. The thing I was most worried about would be that the game is a slog solo because you only have 1/4 the damage output.

Once again, what first-party 3DS titles visually put this to shame?

This needs to be repeated over and over again. Federation Force looks the way it does on purpose for one reason or another and it's not because of the 3DS itself.

Those images are indeed what the games look like. Both Resident Evils are the huge examples of what can be done on the 3DS with similar styled games.

Off the top of my head and having played Federation Force's training mission: Kid Icarus Uprising, Luigi's Mansion 2, Mario 3D Land, both Kirby Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot, Majora's Mask 3D, Smash Bros... It would be easier to list worse looking Nintendo games.

Oh and Xenoblade 3D, which you mentioned earlier, not only is a much more ambitious effort but also looks much better than Federation Force.

While not super inspiring, I'm a fan of the Metroid Prime 3 box art. Though I would've had it been just Dark Samus behind Samus and not have a fade-in in the corner. Still nice.
It's one of the more memorable covers in the series but weren't a lot of media doing the whole "light version dark version" thing in the mid-late 00s? Spiderman 3 cemented it (although I know that, yes, dark samus originates from the first game).
Looking good to me.

Is this the actual PAL boxart?

I like the colors of the NA one but lord jesus this conveys the game far better.

Thanks for the impressions, Chair.

Does the game seem fun single player or is it obviously a multiplayer game?

Also wondering what the mission select is like when you're playing online. One of the things I hated about Tri Force Heroes was constantly playing levels I already finished and just hoping to play the one I needed to beat.

About how long are the missions?

Is anyone doing the OT? I'm tempted to

I haven't played more cause I was busy, but I'm about to play another mission. First mission took me a little more than 18 minutes. At the end I saw there was a target time of 16 min that would have given me bonus points.
I have not tried to jump online yet, I'll see if I can connect tonight.
For me it seems like it would be more fun with multiplayer, but it was still fun. I have to try a few more missions before giving it a fair impression

Seeing those Prime boxarts above reminds me that I was always pointlessly annoyed by the fact that Corruption inexplicably dropped the ball logo thing the series had going up to that point.

Shouldn't it be more annoying that Prime's logo is that of a powerup that exists in literally every Metroid game except Prime?

Wasn't much of a story trailer, then again I don't imagine this game has much of a story focus, so I'm not sure why they even bothered with a trailer like this.
