Too bad Mexico beat us. I guess I will just have to take solace in the fact that the US is not a third world country.

It is also why Football is the world game.

Nigeria may not be the hot spot, but the likes of Yakubu, Yobo, Obasi, Demba Ba etc are class.

Don't start all this pro USA shit. If you had a good return rate of professional football players to make up for your 300 million population you'd probably be able to talk. But you don't. I'd rate Australia on par, maybe even better than the USA national team. And we have 26 million people. Enough said. Oh, and Rugby is our #1 sport too btw.

Apologies I forgot sarcasm does not translate well over the Internet. I was tryig to make a point. Most Americans don't follow soccer and let alone care if we lose to a country that really does care about the sport.

this thread sucks. soccer sucks. The offsides rules makes the game SO BORING. zzzzz. when is someone going to score a goal? i don't know how you third world countries can stand that shit. i guess there's nothing else to do over there.

That too, yeah. But you don't see near as many amazing feats of sheer athleticism in soccer as you do in basketball, football, or even baseball.

Wat.

You have to be kidding me..

Watch that video. You'll find more athleticism in that video than you'll ever find in basketball, football or even baseball.

Thats not sarcasm.

Unless you're Carlos Mencia. And if thats the case, you're just not welcome here.

Bullshit. Your previous post wasn't intended to be sarcastic. Not at all. Even if you add the /sarcasm tag, it doesn't make any sense as a sarcastic comment.

You are just trying to save your butt from a possible ban or something.

Just imagine if Mike Vick or Allen Iverson had applied themselves to soccer.

Scottie Pippen at goalie? Come on now...

There are #2 receivers all across the NFL with the physical ability to do that.

And yes, it is real.
Thats nice and cute and all but thats just a product of a shitload of free time more than anything else....

why would America's top athletes work hard at soccer? Kobe makes about 1 billion times as much in Basketball than he ever would if he applied himself to be the best soccer player in the USA.

for those with reading comprehension problems

What I have learned from this thread is that only Americans (and maybe our northern brethren?) watch and care about soccer, the rest of the world apparently plays, watches, and cares about something else. It's like when I was in the UK and tried to pay with cash, but the retailer said they only accept quid, so I was all, "whatevs dude".

If Michael Jordan signed Arsenal's starting XI to the NBA, they'd have a better record than the 2008-2009 Bobcats

Naw, Intl. soccer stars make tons more than what Kobe could ever get playing basketball.

DY_nasty said:

The USA has a population of 300 million people.

I'll use the Premier League as an example. AMERICAN players who play in the EPL are Tim Howard, Spector, Dempsey and Guzan. Two of them are goalkeepers.

Australia, a country with 26 million people, has Tim Cahill, Mark Schwarzer, Vincenzo Grella, Brett Emerton and Richard Garcia play in the best league in the world.

Now outside the premier league, you have your Darmacus Beasley's and your Landon Donovan's, we have our Harry Kewell's and Mark Bresciano's. Argue players all you want, but with your population, you'd think you'd be considerably outshining countries like us.

DY_nasty said:

Daft argument. There are many football players who show considerable strength and skill which may be applied on a basketball court. But it would be stupid to ponder.

If you want to go by that analogy, Joey Barton would make a world class boxer.

Depends on if you can still resort to thuggery in soccer.

sorry I don't believe that. Kobe makes 23 million a year in salary alone. We're not even talking about endorsements here. How much do you really think an American could expect to make in an international league :lol

the problem is most people just don't give a shit about soccer here. it would be like the united states pitting it's best american football team against the best 53 american football players from your country. you would get absolutely destroyed

DY_nasty said:
Disregarding all sarcasm in previous post, I've got to say this: The best athletes in the world do not play soccer. It may be a great sport, but I think Americans would much rather see a guy jump from the free throw line or plow through two 300 lb D-lineman. I tried explaining offsides to a couple of my friends and they were completed baffled that someone would implement a rule that deliberately cripples the better athlete/player. I like soccer, but only more than baseball - and that ain't sayin much.

As others have said, it doesn't cripple the player, it'd be terribly unfair to the defense to not have offsides. Imagine some dude sitting in the endzone, waiting for the ball to be snapped so he can make a quick break on the safety and get an easy 30-40 yards. Anyway, every single sport requires a hell of a lot of athleticism, but soccer is one of the few sports that requires you not only be in amazing shape, but also requires people to improvise on the spot. There's a lot of finesse in soccer, and it is totally disregarded by people who don't really understand the game. You don't need strength, at least in the same way as most american sports, so it gets some bias in that regard, but there's no real equivalent for the ridiculous footwork soccer players have.

Honestly, I don't care what people like, I'm actually a big fan of american football, and enjoy hockey too. But most people that shit on soccer are fucking idiots. It may not ever be big in america, and that's fine, but it's a wonderful sport anyway

Moe Joe: Tim Cahill would make a great boxer, too ;)

are you serious? do you ever watch the NFL or NBA? not trying to downplay that it wasn't a great save, but if you're talking pure "incredible play!" type stuff you can see scrubs in the NFL on any given sunday do that.

How is that impressive?

If you think thats impressive than Cricket would be a much better sport for you.

Yeah, but you have to look at all the available sports people play over here. Soccer is wayyyy down the list.

In Australia, it's Cricket, Soccer, AFL right?

You have this the wrong way round. The offside rule gives the advantage to the faster player and forces intelligent passing play by preventing goal hanging. Without it football would be terrible.

You're right. I used to think like DY until I learned how to appreciate the flow and skill of the game. Once I saw how a well timed pass could lead to a great breakaway opportunity and the difference between being onside or how a crafty defender can sneak up in coverage right before the pass to force an offsides. It's a crucial part of the game.

I know a lot of Americans hate soccer because of the lack of scoring (or some games even scoring chances) but soccer does a lot right. There is a good flow of action (no commercials!) fun strategy and some of the most athletic things you'll ever see a person do with a foot. That said, some aspects like the lack of scoring and the flopping to draw calls really turns off the casual fan.

Bill Simmons recently wrote that if Premier League soccer games were regularly broadcast over in the US the sport could really take off, because the US only wants to watch the best players in the world. I definitely think that would help, at least now we're finally seeing all the major soccer tournaments regardless of if the US is playing, next step is getting a league on TV. I'd love to see more coverage of that league.

um, how is a save more impressive? he gets a hand on the ball. the guy on the bucs gets a hand on it as well, but he pulls it in for a catch with his qb on the run. keep in mind he's wearing a helmet, padding etc. the soccer dude ain't wearing shit and gets a hand on the ball

and that play i showed you probably wouldn't make a top 50 catches of 2008. just using it to prove a point.

My friends and I play that game. There are some basketball players that would absolutely destroy soccer if they had played it all their lives. Dominique Wilkens alone could have been Pele.

edit: Well maybe not Pele :lol but pretty damn good. They key is foot-eye coordination which is hard to judge in other sports.

Think about Barry Sanders on the pitch, he'd be like Maradona!

that dude is sick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCTyjCdMLqw&NR

his ball control is amazingly sick

the thing about FOOTball is when someone does something with his feet it always looks more awesome than using hands because we all expect hand control to be much better than foot control so FOOTball >>>>>>>> than whatever handBALL others play

who?? who has easily broken into the NFL from your country? i can't even think of any great foreign players in the NFL off the top of my head, so enlighten me

I'm sorry Americans, but Football is the world game. Loved by more people on this planet and any other planet for that matter.

nothing in America comes even remotely close to football.

Well try the fact that its curving while also moving at 10x the speed a throw would.

Thats HORRIBLE logic.

Australia has 26 million people and the best basketball player they produced is Matt Carroll. Across the US, high school soccer is looked at like a joke. As in, "Damn son! You didn't make the basketball team so you gotta play soccer huh?" or "Dang, I guess you ain't big enough to play football so that only leaves soccer".

And comparing athletes between sports isn't that big of a problem as long as your basing all of your arguments on athleticism. Plenty of high school recruits are seen as top 100 players in the country in several sports because they display the kind of ability that can cross over.

Look at some of the larger club markets, the contracts they get are absolutely ridiculous. And unlike Kobe, they reach a much broader audience because of soccer so their endorsements are that much more ridiculous.

Was there even one american on this forum that knew* about this game?

don't get me wrong i loved soccer as a kid. But in America most of us could care less and the fact every time this happens my mexican friend feels the need to rub it in and laugh at the USA.

ONLY if they learned how to play in Europe or South America.

If they learned how to play in the US, those guys wouldn't be able to do shit on the pitch. The US doesn't teach technical ability. They may be able fly around on the field, but they wouldn't be able to do shit with the ball.

Soccer's way on the bottom. Most kids get into Rugby or AFL at a young age before even thinking of soccer. I'm not being homophobic here, but this country definately goes by the mentality that 'soccer is gay!'

1. Rugby League
2. AFL
3. Rugby Union
4. Basketball (Has much more kids playing)
5. Soccer (10 thousand people in a 50 thousand seater stadium, for our typical a league, enough said)

But I suppose a lot of American players go to college and do the NFL route but for Soccer. They just don't end up that big the college ones. Australians are out of the country by 16 and forget any education. You never know, David Moyes may have started a revolution by signing all of your college boys, I can hope! :lol
