I'm talking about the clips they keep posting in particular.

Athleticism and skill are not the same thing.

Case in point: While playing basketball, I could cross people up and break ankles back when I was in college. I was and still am overweight.

I'm definitely sure being a goalkeeper is more athleticism than skill.

I'm no expert but what good is athleticism if you can't recognize and anticipate where the ball is going to go.

Sigh. It takes both athleticism and skill to do those plays of the clips people are showing you. It is a sport after all.

I doubt it. I'm sure that defensive knowledge/awareness, film study, understanding of angles, and all sorts of things that are entirely over my head contribute more to the overall success of a goalie than a vertical jump and lateral quickness.

I never said that athleticism wasn't a factor at all. I'm just saying that those clips weren't exactly showcases of the greatest athleticism...

I think its pretty funny douchebags are saying "lol soccer" just because their country sucks ass at it.
We just beat the best team in the world a couple of months ago and WE STILL DON'T CARE ABOUT FUCKING SOCCER!

The US could win the next five world cups and soccer would still be a second tier sport.

It's so funny when Americans call Football a sport for pussies when they have beefed up guys wearing tons of protections and ridiculously fit pants when playing Handegg. Seriously, wtf?.

What team?. If it's Barcelona, Arsenal or Real Madrid, chances are they didn't even bother using their main players. Therefore winning wasn't really all that much of a deal :)

I think we should all agree to agree. Football is the worlds greatest sport.
You can have that, but the US still has the world's greatest athletes. And none of them care about soccer - or games against Mexico for that matter.

Doesn't rugby have the same sort of shit? And they barely wear any pads, or maybe just no pads at all. That's a real men sport! :P

(Of course, I'd rather be a pussy than getting my head smashed and be bleeding every weekend, but again I don't go around calling other sports "pussies" :P)

edit - after seeing all the hits, I could see many of those players getting so much hate and whatnot. Specially the last one. If I were the one on the white jersey, I would kill the other guy whenever nobody was looking at us. Head-to-belly hit all of a sudden? I bet the guy got out of oxygen for a second, there.. that's gotta hurt :(

When did I, or anyone, call rugby players, or even soccer players, pussy?

That being said, rugby doesn't have 260 lb, 4.5 speed, 6'3, all muscle linebackers either...

Rugby players don't get nearly as big as NFL players. A quick Google told me that rugby players top out at 220 lbs. NFL lineman are 300+ lbs.

Rugby is pretty violent too, but the type of tackling is different.

You know how F= ma? Well the m and the a are way higher in the NFL.

I wasn't talking about you, sorry. I was talking about other people calling Football (soccer..) a sport for pussies :P Just that, don't worry :)

Oh and seriously American Handegg is pretty weak compared to Rugby.

Those pics are brutal!
Thanks to Setanta, I began watching Rugby.

Seriously, congratulations to Mexico for beating the backs-ups to our reserves.

Way to brag about beating our C/D team in a meaningless cup.

We shall see who is talking tough after the real match in a few weeks.

The US used second-tier players for the match? Then I won't say anything..

Wait, I didn't say anything about this match to begin with.. I just came to talk about Football vs Handegg :P

:lol

Well I don't think you'll be a joke this coming season..but last season was absurd. A 5-0 aggregate thumping by Liverpool was the last thing I saw coming.

I had to double check if I was still looking at the same thread that I started reading 2 pages ago. GAF thread derails are unique...

Anyway, although I'm part of the .5% of the population of Mexico that actually doesn't give a flying shit about soccer, it's good to know that the Mexican team finally had a good match against USA.

Carry on... you guys were talking about Rugby being invented by Connan, thus making it the only manly sport of the world or something, right?

Now that's a mental image I can get behind.

My biggest problem with soccer is that for each amazing goal made, there are about 10 atrocious flops, most of which work in getting the free kick, and sometimes a booking on the opposing team. I don't like how gaming the system can be such an effective strategy. There needs to be effective off field penalties to stop such trash plays from occurring.

Not to say that American sports don't have this problem as well, see Karl Malone/John Stockton in the NBA.

That being said, rugby doesn't have 260 lb, 4.5 speed, 6'3, all muscle linebackers either...

and NFL doesn't allow the teams to trample all over said players with studded boots when they are on the ground, sans helmet padding etc.

I played Union at a decent level, i've been there - it can get pretty horrific. That said, given the choice, i'd take getting a beat down in rugby over NFL any day of the week (even if only because i'd know what was coming!)

Did you expect him to outperform 25+ year olds when he was 15??

didn't bother Wayne Rooney and a whole host of other players who broke in to teams young (albeit at the slightly older age of 16).

<Greaves>Football's a funny old game</Greaves> you just don't know what sort of a game you are going to get. Not that that's unique to football, it's all the never ending gift that the drama of sport provides.

1st of all, Mexico also played with their B team. It's a big deal to us because it's the national sport, and the us has really improved over the years regardless of the ignorance of the mainstream press

2nd, People should really stop watching Jim Rome for opinions on the worlds sport

3rd, ignorance on the part of the American sportos but Football will grow and grow in the United States, just yesterday. Giants stadium, Foxborough, the new Dallas stadium were sold out due to football events. Look at the succes of the Seattle sounders, Football is growing.

4 most American sportos are ignorant of the worlds sport, basically basing theirvassumptions on the classic stereotypes like it's a girls sport, flopping, low scoring without undestanding the immense depth, technical ability, asthetic qualities, and importance of the game at the international level. For example, 250 million people watch the Super Bowl, three times the people people watch a game between Arsenal vs Man U, and thats just a league game. The word cup is like a super bowl, NBA finals, march madness, world series combined times 30, since the competition last a month.

Very, very few American kids grow up with dreams of becoming world-class soccer superstars. It isn't hard to imagine that the vast majority of our best athletes go to something else (Basketball, baseball, or football).

And outside of that, maybe our soccer team just sucks. I doubt you'll find many people that really care.

A very very boring sport more boring than baseball. It's also were man put their acting skills and act as if they've been hurt aka "flopping". Sadly this crap was brought over by European basketball players to the NBA and has ruin the fun of the game everytime someone flops.

:lol
Sigh. Ignorance is bliss.

Let's just agree to disagree and move along!

Hmm I don't think the USA soccer team sucks. There's room for a lot of improvement, but the team has shown in the past that it can win some very crucial games.

Soccer is better than American Football because the robot version actually resembles the sport.

I read that football (soccer) is actually the most popular sport for young boys and girls in the United States but they drop it in favour of another sport because high schools do not really support it. That is depressing.

Soccer is known as the 'beautiful sport'. Some Americans will always say, the game they watched, was boring. But it depends on what they are expecting and whom they are watching. I love the build-up, the control of the ball, and the goals that took minutes to create. It's just pure art.

You need to be blind and retarded, and possibly extra-retarded and blind, to not appreciate this

Hmmm, I was brought up playing football from an early age and was pretty passionate up until I left for uni... Actually, although I enjoyed, it was really never the activity for me....it is enjoyable, and enjoys immense hype...but its all about preference, anybody who thinks football objectively has anything above many other sports is having a laugh. Nowadays I don't play football at all, and thus find it sometimes tedious to watch...I really dislike all the hype and hero worship surrounding the sport as well, but thats another matter... Its funny though, in bboying there are lots of people with insane skills, but they dont get the cash or the fame, just the respect...

Anyway we can do hype to...:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a802vc9tTXg

But yeah, there are lots of enjoyable activities out there regardless of how many millions participate

Probably depends on what part of the country you are in, but I grew up in the Midwest and most kids stopped playing soccer long before high school. We played baseball in the spring/summer. And while younger we played soccer in the fall, by the time most of the boys turned 8 they had switched over and were playing American football instead in a Pop Warner league.
