Yeah, Hawkian it mostly 2) I am wondering about: will Microsoft believe a powerful version will be good business. Thats the question.

sure, but then couldn't you just have a thin, real keyboard in that section? Why does it need to have two screens other than one-upmanship? are there any practical examples in the videos that show a real need for two screens?

Its tying to mirror a real world journal/book - surely you can understand why it has two screen!

Ask anyone with dual monitors - two screens are a boon for productivity.

I just wanted to say that, as a dual monitor user, the ability to "tuck" content in between the two screens to have it persist across "page flips" is absolutely fucking brilliant. It turns what is normally an illusion-shattering weakness of dual monitor setups- the separation of the screens by a physical bezel- into an asset.

This is exactly the kind of tablet I have been looking for and the one I hoped to see from Apple. I'm really excited!

So yes, fuck the iPad, hope Microsoft puts a reasonable prince.

btw, what's with that picture anyway?

he bet n'gai croal that the psp wouldn't sell 10 million units in the first year - he lost and that was the result.

Running two apps simpultaneously is the obvious answer...

Reading on one side while typing on another. No need for having to minimze a page to get to the other?

Possibilities are numerous.

That video demo is SEX, and it's close to what I've been dreaming about for future Cintiq implementations: You have a multi-touch virtual straight edge, sweeps and curves which you manipulate with your less dominant hand, and you draw with the pen in your dominant hand. *drool.....*

MS is surely to disappoint this Monday if their event is for the worthless Pink Panties phones instead of the Courier.

They are completely within reason, though i'd love to see the sort of tech in that video reach consumers. Regarding Courer, i'm curious as to what screen tech they plan to use, especially if it's going to accept stylus and touch input.
Wacom Gen6 capacitive multi-touch + EMR pen. The same ones used in just about every new touch + pen Tablet PCs.

What's funny is that they can run that demo on many Tablet PCs right now (HP TM2, Fujitsu T4410, T900, Lenovo X201T, HP 2730p etc...). All they need to do is tweak the digitizer driver to accept touch and pen input at the same time.

And there I was wanting a Kindle/Nook. This resolves everything. Although I am worried that it wont be able to recognise my shitty handwriting :lol

I really like the concepts in that video (I saw it earlier today when I checked my Google Reader at work). Honestly, the stacking stuff could be done with just touch input probably, but the rest of the stuff looks really cool - though obviously it would be difficult to do simultaneous touch and pen input with something like the courier if you're holding the courier with one hand while standing somewhere. Works fine for desk-bound work though.

As I said

This shouldn't be a problem if they can implement the Windows Vista/7 handwriting recognition.

I can't view the video right now since I'm in the library (supposed to be studying :p) but has Lenovo really incorporated an EMR digitizer in that x201? Like a Cintiq? Might explain why it's a $275 add-on.

Edit: watched the video. It doesn't show him using it with his palm resting on it? Hell, that looks like a resistive screen.

It's a capacitive screen and he's clearly saying: Once you bring the included pen close to the screen, the touch functions take a back seat.

I wonder if it's fully touchscreen functional e.g. click on links on the browser using your finger

Microsoft has generated some Apple-esque buzz on blogs as well as through leaked videos of the prototype of its slate, the Courier. According to a Microsoft employee who has seen the device, the Courier is about as big as an ordinary paperback and folds out to reveal two screens. Users would be able to take notes on the device with a pen, and easily drag and share content between the screens.

But Microsoft engineers have concerns about the battery power needed to keep the two screens going, these people said. And internally the company is struggling to identify the right market. At first the idea was to market the Courier for designers and architects, but lately the company is thinking of a broader market of consumers and so would include e-books, magazines and other media content on the device.

Microsoft engineers have talked about getting the Courier out by early 2011, though no firm decision has been made to sell the product.

That sounds like the Microsoft we know. They have an awesome piece of tech and the don't know what to do with it.

God damn it. God damn it in the butt.

So what's the other alternative to iPad, then? Because I was saving up for a Courier, and now I get owned.
