Microsoft Courier: dual-screen touch tablet

The only big reason that I'd get a tablet is it'll make taking notes and doing research easier. Courier is like a souped up OneNote and that's why I like it. I also don't see the point of me having medium to large-sized tablets with finger only touch functionality as they'd would be just mostly movel multimedia devices with the only advantage being the form factor and weight. Tablets wouldn't replace anything I have, but like the smartphone, what I'm looking for is how many new things I can do with it.

Still, I don't see this thing coming out anytime soon.

If this can sync with my mac....It's day one for me. Screw the iPad.

Edit:

I should clarify that as a Graphic Designer and a student, This device is looks like the perfect solution to not having to lug around a laptop.

if this thing has pressure sensitivity for the pen then it's an instant buy.

iPad had it's fucking iChance, and it fucked up. so fuck that.

the showed a video of your notes syncing to a web portal. so that makes it potentially Mac friendlier as you may not need outlook or windows mail to sync contacts

they haven’t show how media will sync to this (if at all) but I’m guessing the zune software just like the new win phone 7.

But no zune software for mac :(

Also, I'd like a way to import sketches and journal pages to Photoshop and Illustrator.

Yeah, but do you really see this as a big media machine? everything they’ve shown has been about notes, calendars, images, etc.

here is a case where I could have an iPod for media in my pocket and the courier as a machine purely for notes, sketches, etc.

I agree it doesn't need any media player functionality but I'm sure it will be stuffed in there.

As long as it has flash support! Lol

Engadget did say there was a headphone jack. so music is a given (maybe Zune interface?). video should be possible (landscape?).

Neat concept. Not something that I have much use for, though. I'd like to see some other company run with the ideas and clean up the interface because it looks needlessly byzantine.

to each his own.
I really do not like Itunes + iphone. Granted I haven't used an iphone with itunes in a while so they may have changes some of the things i didnt like, but i found it super annoying.
Its also annoying, we have people at work with their iphones which is fine even though we dont officially support it. They want to sync with itunes at work which requires an admin to install and then it gets cranky if they have already synced their phone with another set of itunes as its primary device.

I do use Itunes all the time though to stream to my airport express, which is pretty easy to setup.
I was just coming from the point of view that setting email settings was as easy as plugging in my iPhone to my computer and saying yes. Obviously it isn't the only way to set up email, but it's the ridiculously easy way of doing it as an option.

While somewhat difficult to get excited or be impressed by something that's a promotional render with no hint of actual performance, I do like the looks of this. It looks far more useful as a real tool than the iPad does for brainstorming, taking into meetings to take notes, etc. At least it's trying to be useful rather than just another toy to sit around the house to browse GAF with or watch a movie.

Looks really good so far and I'd love to get one of these if the price is right. I usually find myself jotting notes down in either notebooks, scrap pieces of paper or on my hand before I even consider typing them into my phone. So if it's small enough, I can definitely see myself carrying this around at all times.

This thing looks really awesome, I hope it turns out as well as they claim it will in the promos. Has there been any more talk about a release date or anything about the physical unveiling of the product?

There's something just deeply satisfying and interesting about the fact that it has two "pages."

I think I'd be way more tempted by the iPad if it wasn't so damned expensive. If this thing is competitive, price-wise, I might bite.

I have no real interest in tablets, but this looks pretty cool. It might be the 2 pages thing, it just looks more satisfying to use.

Edit: LOL, beaten, that's what I get for having so many tabs open! :D

Oh, if they can price this very competitively (sub $750) against the iPad it will sway a lot of people over (including me). Is Microsoft releasing this hardware themselves like the Zune or is this a brand of tablets that will be released by several companies (HP, Dell, etc.)?

I can see using the iPad as something to use for leisure and then busting out the Courier for work time.

BTW, it needs a new name. Something that rolls off the tongue. The Courier is just too much of a mouthful when discussing it in normal conversations.

The alternative was Windows Dual Screen Multi Touch Pen-based Tablet 7 Series.

I like the Courier name. it feels oddly right.

Do the screens "lock" open? seems like if they fold too easily, the device will be awkward to hold in one hand and interact with it using the other. From what I've seen it looks like it'll be easiest to use when lying flat on a table.

Hold it on the side your writing against. The other side shouldn't swing around past 180 degrees...

seeing how this MS won't confirm that this is coming, what about the Slate? it could potentially do much of the same (and more). but it doesn't seem to be a pen device (which limits the main reason I even want one of these)

The HP Slate? That's an x86 device running 7. x86 in a tablet means Intel Atom, which means shit battery and/or slow if they downclock it.

When I saw the new pictures on Engadget, I was a bit pissed. I really liked the concept with two 7" screens. Enough space for taking notes and browsing the web. But then I saw my moleskine notebook on my desk and I took a second look at the pictures. The size is perfect. It fits in my pocket, I can take it where ever I want. A perfect digital notebook.

The only thing that matters now is the technology. Display technology to be exact.

- 2x 1024x768 resolution (high DPI is important)
- capacitive touchscreen
- active wacom-like stylus

then it would be really perfect.

But enough of my dreams.
It will probably be like this:

- 2x 800x480 resolution (which is okay)
- resistive multi touch touchscreen
- standard stylus

But I really hope they'll use something wacom-like because it's incredibly shitty to write on a resistive screen.

Oh, and I really don't expect it to be sold for less than 400 dollars.

I'm infinitely more interested in this over the iPad. It seems like more focused design for usability rather than porting and rearranging the UI for a larger screen. The "tuck" in the middle clipboard functionality is gimmicky, but it sold me :lol .

I just finally bought an EeePc to have a small notebook to bring to class, and then I see this :lol Hope it won't cost too much, I'll probably end up buying it if it has the right specs/price, the videos certainly wowed me.

I prefer typing to writing since it's easier to search/organize/copy/fix virtual stuff, but when you're studying maths and physics, it's faster to write equations like this

with a pen(cil) than with a keyboard.

What a turn around it's been from the halycon days for Microsoft, when only the Graphic designers and student industry kept the Mac relevant, to a new era where it's assumed everybody will use the iPad and the the graphics designers and students will use a Courier..

I am loving the look of the product and UI. The Courier definitely has more hype from me then the iPad. The Courier just seems more personal like a notebook with endless possibilities, not a larger iPhone.

Really looking forward to this.
