"Mail" is a good application.
yes then they call us for config on that.

I've done mail adds enough times on the iphone to know that no matter how easy(even though its easier on blackberry than iphone) something is there is a good chunk of the market that will need hand holding through it.

The thread not the device.
If you look at the first post today in this thread and the responses immediately after, people just starting saying "Way better than the iPad" unprovoked.

...just saying.

You enter your username and password and it figures out everything else for you. Why are you bringing this up as an iPad negative? It's a negative to every computing device on the planet if the user can't figure that out.

I find a lot of sense in you coming into threads and repeatedly calling out others for shitting up threads.

*sigh*

Once again, if you read all my posts in this thread, you'll see I'm doing nothing but giving honest commentary on the device at hand. If you saw me post in the iPad thread, you'd see me doing the same.

Shame that you've decided to peg me as an irrational fanboy instead of participate in conversation.

That picture is the device i want! If it doesn't have the functionality that I want but runs something like windows 7 or windows mobile 7 than hopefully i can write it myself.

But that design along with stylus input is a beast. Could completely replace my notebook

edit: paper notebook... of course not my laptop.

Saw this earlier as well, and not sure what to make of it. Looks like interesting tech, and it's much smaller than I was expecting. I'd like to see more about it and see some video of the actual product in action. Seems to be searching for a very different niche from the iPad.

Day fucking one, this is a much better concept than the iPad.

Although, I see this as a separate device than an e reader.

One post exclaiming way better concept than the ipad...
Which in actuality it is a way better concept.

mostly because that one guy got super hyperbolic about it replacing laptops and desktops. And I see in my future calls from people that thought it would be a great idea to buy this but dont have the first clue how to do things like join it to their wireless, setup email, download itunes to their regular pc to sync with this new Ipad.
>.<

basically its again the "its so simple it just works" ..... because 5 IT guys are behind the scenes making it work.
I was at our board meeting last week and they were talking about Electronic Health Records(EHR) and why our particular hospital cannot just use one thats a medical EHR and one board member casually said why dont you just get some ipads they are like 500 a pop and you can write on them and i quote "they just work" and im sitting there thinking, we'd have to redesign our current partial EHR for touch/scribbling, we would have to redesign it from IE to safari, we'd have to change our enterprise wireless setup for the ipad and that was just off the top of my head.

hey, I actually like you, but you walked into that one because i remembered when i first saw this thread bumped today. :lol

I'd say that both this and the iPad are things that no one particularly needs (I am old fashioned perhaps, but I'm still to be convinced that this would be better than pen and paper at this size) they're more things that they would make us want. the advantage the iPad has, i guess, is that it's probably easier to make us desire things we play with rather than do work on.

I posted my prediction on how marketable the iPad's design was based on others saying they felt Courier's was superior. But the two aren't going after the same people based on their designs, so it's odd to say that one is better designed than the other. I could easily see Courier being the preferred option (of the two) for designers and such due to the pen functionality; that's the one aspect that makes it appealing to me.

Kind of like the two screens and the closing aspect also.

Bah! :lol

I just want to talk about geeky shit without getting shit on because I'm a different type of geek than everyone else!

I'm one of you!

*cries*

If it can replace pen/paper for notetaking, I'm all for it. Less than or equal to $200 and you've got a deal MS.

Also, this isn't meant to compete or is going to replace the iPad. Comparisons are useless, the main functionality that each serve are very different.

fuuuuuuuuuck. just saw the first video. god damn. this is what I want.

only a few things that needs to be confirmed:

  1. price
  2. battery life
  3. storage
  4. drawing/painting tools

but shit, this is what I been looking for.

At $200 this thing will sell like gang busters.

And some of us have been saying the same thing about this vs. the iPad. They're not even close to being the same product or market.

Does this thing have pressure sensitivity? If so, then I'm definitely interested in using this as a sketchbook, portable painting device. Having the ability to do other things is a bonus. I'm pretty sick of all this non-stylus interface that's become prevalent these days, I'll take a good stylus over having to use a finger any day.

Looks hot. If it lives up to the concept videos on youtube i'll definitely be tempted to bite, especially if it comes with a slot for a sim and thus 3g connectivity.

I feel neglected. I’m totally part of Apple-Gaf and I am legitimately enthusiastic about the Courier. do my posts not count? :lol

anyway, I’m just glad a bit more info about this came out. I’m confident that it’s not a coincidence that it leaked the day US iPad availability was announced, though :lol

All I really want with this is the ability to quickly and easily mark up documents with notes and diagrams the way I would on paper but with the added power of, say, adding vector graphics or web images.

I never feel comfortable with “note taking” apps on a keyboard. I always feel like I’m missing the pen. I’m way more of a handwriting guy than a keyboard guy. I guess that’s why I’m more interested in this than, say, RubxQub, who’s a whiz at typing.

This looks good, hopefully it'll make the iPad realize it can't affort to just be a single-task tool, w/o a stylus. I'll await the competition in a few years, when these things reach new heights.

My first exposure to computers was a typing tutor that ran off one of those massive pie sized floppy disks. Like 2nd grade I think.

Kids these days should type at like 500 WPM...but I bet they suck and don't...

I just looked up some info, doesn't seem like a consumer device yet, but the Engadget article gives me hope. Q3/Q4 would be perfect as I hope to start art school by fall.

I really dig the "journal" concept.
I doubt it will ever replace a good Moleskine, but anything is possible.

The distinction always has been:

MS tablets - mostly for work, some for play
Apple iPad - mostly for play, some for work

The Courier seems to continue that trend.

The thing is that typically people associate Apple with creative professionals and PC's with spreadsheet/wordprocessing office work.

This device is seemingly aimed directly at creatives and from appearances presents a much more compelling workflow for creative types than the iPad's productivity suite does for MS Office users.

I think MSFT should just buy evernote and use them as the infrastructure behind the hosted portion.

That stereotype has been out the window for a while. Now, it's more like graphic designers = Macs. 3D oriented = PCs. Rest of the creative industry = Macs or PCs.

Also, Evernote sucks compared to MS's own digital note stuff. Evernote is just a product made to let regular XP users have something.

The stereotype has never really been true, but it is still the essence of the whole Mac Vs. PC ad campaign. Cool/edgy/forward thinking vs. pratical/boring/utilitarian

Evernotes strength is having it on mobile devices like your phone. Taking pictures that get their text scanned from my pre of sketches i make on whiteboards or ideas I have on the bus is pretty awesome. The way sharing works seems a good match for this platform.

I think the way for this to really succeed will to keep it elegant and simple in terms of sharing and project management via the hosted part of the system. I dont really find the collaborative workflow in that part of MSFTs offering to be all that great (though I haven't had much experience with Sharepoint).

That sharing part is the most ??? worthy aspect of the Courier for me as well. Everything else, I can see (especially with the horsepower that Tegra 2 and dual core Coretx A9 provides) no problem.

I've always wanted a real replacement for paper notebooks and this is it.

I've been doing that for 5+ years now, but with the Courier, you can do it without the baggage of X86 and full Windows...

Chances are it will just sync email settings via iTunes too.

I am definitely curious to see if and that is a big IF Microsoft can truly deliver a real product for a not outrageous price that fulfills in real life what the videos have displayed. If they can then wow...

Worked out ok for my iPhone.
to each his own.
I really do not like Itunes + iphone. Granted I haven't used an iphone with itunes in a while so they may have changes some of the things i didnt like, but i found it super annoying.
Its also annoying, we have people at work with their iphones which is fine even though we dont officially support it. They want to sync with itunes at work which requires an admin to install and then it gets cranky if they have already synced their phone with another set of itunes as its primary device.

I do use Itunes all the time though to stream to my airport express, which is pretty easy to setup.

Those videos set the bar pretty high. If Microsoft can deliver, I'll likely be in line to buy one of these.

I mean, it's like a Moleskine that can SURF THE INTERNET.

Rubx, what's with the hate with writing on paper? Some people simply can not type fast (or at all). Besides I always find I retain information better by writing them out, especially in different color ink. Also I only recently just realized I have a waaaaaaay easier time writing out stories and essays on paper rather than on Word. But then that is just me.

When I saw the original leaked video, I was blown away by the concept.

Looking at these new photos, my anticipation went from DO WANT to DO NEED.

What ass-backwards place does Microsoft make a seemingly-better concept than Apple? I cannot wait for more details. FROTHING AT THE MOUTH.

You know who writes on paper? Communists and pederasts. TRUE FACT.

I think the ironic thing is how Apple and iPad supporters keep pushing it as an easy device aimed at the mass consumers and the non tech or computer savvy, yet those people are the same type of people who likely feel more comfortable writing with a pen/pencil than on a keyboard or even a touch screen keyboard.

I don’t think it’s ironic when the iPhone has been a good example of how non tech savvy people have been able to understand a UI easily from the get-go. The iPad is a direct extension of that so it’s natural to think it’s going to appeal to those people.

The courier concept videos we have seen have not exactly been intuitive. I like them because they appeal to the side of me that wants fiddly, unique interfaces. but it doesn’t really look all that discoverable.
