Microsoft has the marketing deal for Doom?

was you on gaf last year, marketing deals was all the rage with MS losing COD and Battlefront.

Because Star Wars and Call of Duty are massive brands. Massive brands that have big potential to push HW sales. Why are you so excited at the prospect of random marketing deals? It's not like these are big HW selling brands. What is it, exactly, that you think these marketing deals are going to do that has you so excited about it?

...these replies aren't any better than what he's doing tho guys

my issue is with any marketing deal not whether or not it belongs to who's plastic box I've invested myself in

My post was a serious one. In this day and age does special marketing take a back seat to comparison articles? To me comparison articles are more of a deciding factor for sales then special commercials featuring your logo at the end.

so not a good pick up? I would think Doom with its history would be a big pickup. Its Doom, we grew up on Doom.

no one should be excited for any marketing deal ever

i'm dead serious they're not important

I don't think marketing deals make much difference, but they can have some impact. See: COD being strongly associated with Xbox for years. If there's exclusive content on a particular platform it's a potential big deal (depending on the content) but mostly who really cares?

Seems like there's some sort of Bethesda/Microsoft marketing deal that might cover all of their games for a few years. Or maybe not. Who knows.

I grew up on doom and quake or UT and prefer those arena shooters over CoD but I don't think this a big deal compared to CoD and BF now...

And that cover is some real bad shit.

No, it's irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. If you think MS wins an NPD because of a new bundle you're either being obtuse or are delusional.

I never mentioned NPD. but marketing deals can be a big deal. Remember MS giving away any free game when Destiny launched? the perfume?

I dont even understand what "good pickup" means in this context. The reason people were worked up over Battlefront and CoD was because it had the potential to move a lot of HW. Mirror's Edge and Doom are not in the same league when it comes to that.

Furthermore you couldve just made the thread title saying Conan is going to play Doom which is pretty damn cool but you chose to make the thread about a fucking marketing deal instead? Why? Like what is the real news here that we are going to see the first console gameplay of Doom and it will be on Conans show or that Xbox probably has another marketing deal for Doom?

Eh they cna be important for brand association (see Destiny) but the vast majority of the time you're right they are nothing to get worked up over.

The only reason Destiny was a big deal was because it was a new IP that could be associated with a specific platform brand. Doom is not a new IP. Neither is Mirror's Edge. Nor are either of these games as impactful (sales wise) as juggernauts like Star Wars and CoD.

Tag quote, and its Doom, its a big deal.

That cover sucks. Even the barren cover of Doom 3 was better than generic space marine with piss filter.

Tag quote, and its Doom, its a big deal.

Doom, however much I love the franchise, hasn't been a big deal since before Doom 3 released. It's an IP with nowhere near the relevance of Star Wars or CoD

MS and Bethesda have had a marketing deal since Fallout 3 so this is neither a "good pickup" or surprising. This is expected. Also as much as we on GAF talk about how awesome Doom is, Doom is an older franchise that hasn't had a good game since Doom 2. Most of us on GAF skew older so of course we love Doom, but will a new generation love Doom?

I don't know.

Totally agree. I don't know if Doom resonates as much as it did back in the day.

Cheerleader yes, but I also mostly only post in Xbox threads. I very rarely post in PS4 threads. Have I? yes, often ? No. Hows his track record?

Looking at the past month or so of him posting in Xbox threads, he didn't care for Killer Instinct or Sunset Overdrives humor. Don't agree with his points on KI, but I kinda agree with SO's humor not being for everyone, it's very in-your-face.

Just because he seems to skew more on the PS side, he's not exactly pushing Sony products or news or anything like that heavily, so I wouldn't call him a cheerleader or evangelical for them.

oh you mean the tag quote where I say Hardline will be the worst performing entry in the series and it was. Oooh sick burn statham. Yea it performed better than I thought it would opening day but it dropped like a rock after that.

People know Doom is multiplatform. People did not know Destiny was multiplatform because it was a new IP that was associated exclusively with a specific platform branding. Or are you trying t argue Doom is the same kind of big deal as Star Wars and CoD? Maybe on PC it is but on console its got nowhere near the draw that those brands have.

Regardless of your odd intent in posting it, this is cool news. I'm looking forward to seeing what Doom looks like on console and I always enjoy Conan's gaming bits.

These kinds of marketing deals can absolutely matter. Aligning themselves with Batman, Destiny, CoD, GTAV and Star Wars has done wonders for Sony. MS' strategy with them this gen has been off the mark in comparison. Doom doesn't strike me as the kind of game that moves the needle like those other games do.

It's more to do with keeping a working business relationship with Bethesda more than anything. The next Elder Scrolls will most likely be marketed with Xbox, that's the real get right there.

Yes they can be, but this is for Doom. This isn't CoD, this isn't GTA, this isn't FIFA, this isn't Madden. It is not even Battlefield, it's freaking Doom. Nobody gives a shit about Doom anymore. Could the game be good? Absolutely it could be fucking awesome. Nobody cares because nobody is buying this game anyway. Its not a big deal and definitely not thread worthy and hopefully we don't start getting threads for every single marketing deal signed.

If it's as good as the latest Wolfenstein, it will probably sell fairly well. The only problem with that is that MachineGames ain't working on Doom.

Welp, what now? I also like ps4 games and QD games, where do you want this conversation to go? I still think the same of him. A troll who is in xbox threads besides hating xbox.

They are important but only for big brand games. COD made noise because it switched to PS4 after being with MS for years and shifted tons of consoles. Battlefront did the same thing. shifted tons of units. Destiny was also big. So in that context marketing deals can be important and ripe for speculation.

But Doom? Doom isn't going to push console sales. When Sony aligns with NBA2k or MS with The Witcher3. It's only there to bolster to platform and make it look stronger. These games won't push console sales and it's not a promise game will sell the most on that particular platform. But the 3 games I mentioned earlier are huge and are important. They shift console sales.

If you have such a problem with Statham making this thread, why - instead of whining about it, don't you just not post in it?

I don't really see what the issue is with making this thread, tbf its had over 100 posts so clearly it can't be that unthread worthy

Back to the key work, cheerleader.

Well it also depends on the extent of the deal. Most likely this just means Xbox boxart and screens in the marketing material and an Xbox bumper at the end of the commercial. Going any further than that into special edition consoles and bundles is not something the Doom IP deserves.

Yeah, really doubt there's gonna be a console. Maybe exclusive DLC?

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

Doom 2 was the last good Doom game. That was 22 years ago on PC. I don't know if a newer, younger generation cares that much as they with CoD.

Right? People were making similar posts in that thread about the XB1 library preview. It's a jump the shark moment.

A preview of games coming out for the system doesn't mean that all the games have marketing deals or exclusive, just games set to release.

How long have you been reading GAF? AgentP isn't exactly somebody that just "skews" on the PS side.

Is there any figures out there for how Doom 3 BFG Edition sold?

Now I'm in the mood to speculate potential sales :D

How long have you been reading GAF? AgentP isn't exactly somebody that just "skews" on the PS side.

I don't look into most peoples past more than a page or two, and the only regular faces I see around are Chobel, statham and Rich!

Can't say I know much about AgentP.

didn't you just make a thread about mirrors edge marketing deal too lmao

who cares about marketing deals

Yes he did. It's pretty irritating when people are so attached to a brand that they consider advertising deals to be some kind of victory for their beloved platform.

Meanwhile in reality, most people just find these deals to be annoying wastes of resources that don't aim to accomplish anything more than to artificially hurt the sales of multiplatform software on competing platforms.

It's the same concept as timed exclusives, ultimately resulting in less people overall purchasing a game. It's such an annoying practice.

I don't think Mirror's Edge will be that big a seller either.

Don't fret about the cover guys, it isn't the official one apparently.

I'm really excited to just see and hear more about this. I'm hoping the release is certainly sooner than later. Well, and with them still saying Spring I feel like it's gotta be soon.

Thank god for that!

I don't think Mirror's Edge will be that big a seller either.

Unfortunately true. There's always hope, though!

"Most people" don't. If that was the case they wouldn't do them. They do them because they are effective.

And I'm not sure how a multiplatform game commercial having a little Xbox or Sony logo at the end somehow affects you or anyone else's ability to enjoy a game? These kinds of arguments by people end up sounding like concern trolling to show just how little you care about the capitalist side of your hobby. We get it. If you don't care about marketing deals feel free not to post in threads about them.

They aren't a waste of resources if they serve a purpose. Most marketing deals Sony aligned themselves with have pushed significant consoles. So yes for a company they can be worthwhile. But a game like Doom isn't going to send people into that sort of frenzy.

That said obviously these companies have budgets that allow for this sort of thing. So I doubt it's truly a waste of money.

I'm not even in a frenzy about Doom. I am interested and looking forward trying it but no frenzy. After Doom 3, any frenzy was lost.

My body is sorta, kinda, maybe ready.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but he didn't confirm/deny anything. He said the cover would be revealed soon. He didn't say that wasn't it, or that the final or real cover would be revealed. Just that the cover would be revealed.

So, temper expectations?

Yup. The cover is truly terrible. You could honestly just put Halo 6 over that instead of Doom and I'd believe it.

And I hate being so negative about it but come the hell on. Who associates piss yellow with Doom? I was thinking reds and blacks and you know something cool and hellish but that's your generic space marine cover.
