People like me assumed they were going to scale back and do a Nintendo direct like format, because they recently started a Xbox Japan blog or something.

and frankly, with like 50k sold lifetime to date, that makes a lot more sense.

Are they that desperate to waste money? I mean, does anyone seriously think that this is going to change anything about their situation in Japan?

Good for them, I don't know how much good it will do but im really happy they are trying to reach out to that audience, maybe this means more jrpg's for the xbox one? That would make me very happy.

Xbox Employees at Japan has a salary, budget and work to at least do too, ya know.

Using the budget for TGS, to do a fan facing event sounds fair. If going gungho at a big trade show won't garner you mainstream attention, at least care for those minority Xbox fans in Japan.

Well, isn't this novel?

Why would From Software choose this as a venue for Dark Souls 3 as opposed to TGS??

Stubborn pride?
Who said from would do either or. They could still be at TGs and MS could have a build for their fan event

Also why are people worried about MS wasting money. MS Japan probably has a budget just for this stuff

Trying to attract Japanese developers to your platform is never a waste in my opinion, that talent should never go to waste. And their games can always sell to the western demographic.

Yep

I just hope that they don't force these devs to live up to any exclusivity deal they might have made before the launches. Keeping Raiden V, or Natsuki Chronicle on XB1 only for instance only hurts the devs and their audience. Obviously these games coming to XB1 are nice, and hopefully they come west, but if there is an "out" in any contract to expand to PS4 I hope MS lets it happen and doesn't just stick to exclusives to hopefully sell 1000 units a week instead of 100. Chaos;Child already went over to PS systems, so thats a good sign.

And Psycho-Pass seems to be getting English subs so hopefully that comes west also!

This is like that party made by a kid who thinks he's cool but he's not so nobody shows up and as he's sitting there with a party hat his dad pats his shoulder and heads upstairs.

To be honest, I fear that the amount of players that enjoy JRPGs on Xbox platforms are pretty slim. I just don't see how the Xbox One would benefit on the short run by adding JRPGs to their library outside of appeasing this minority.

Ya, I think the split for Type-0 HD was like 80/20 in PS4s favor last time I checked (?)

That was my understanding. I just don't understand why a person who owns an Xbox One would yearn and hope for JRPGs to come to that platform when there are other consoles with an ample amount of offerings from that genre. I really do not understand this.

I apologize for coming off topic.

Both Qute's 360 releases were region-free and the Shooting Love devs (despite the first release being region-locked) also seemed to realise there is a, albeit small, fanbase outside Japan.

However, and I hope this doesn't come across as port begging, I just can't imagine that stuff like Raiden V (if it even exists at this point) doesn't eventually get released on the PS4. With Darius Burst being ported to PS4 that just seems like where the audience is going in the near future.

The 360 was a perfect storm of failure for shmups...region locked, poor sales in Japan (even if way better than Xbone), directinput/ps3/pc arcade sticks don't work on it (minor), no digital for many titles, and the region locks weren't even consistent. The Xbone would have been a far better starting point for shmups as a "niche console" but even now that it has digital for 99% of games and region free, the Japanese sales are a disaster (and I still can't get a damn stick that works for it without shelling out another >$100!)

I'm pretty worried as to how this all goes down. Is MS funding/publishing the JP exclusive shmups like Raiden V and Qute's game? I can't imagine it selling well enough in Japan alone, I'm not sure now likely ports are, I doubt they'll get localized, I'm not sure there's enough shmup fans on Xbox One in the west that are willing to import.

The only upside is I won't have to buy a Japanese Xbox this time around. I'll probably be able to get an Xbone for cheaper than my 360 actually (though I got a great deal on mine, came with 6 games)

Cant wait, its smart imo. They arent going to get any attention at tgs, why not hold an event even for the small xbox fans there to give them an oppirtunity to try upcoming games before release.

Its like some of you want those fans and employes to be dissrespected and ignored

lol so naive.

Care to elaborate?

I feel like if they actually massively invest in first party franchises that appeal to japanese audiences, it can only be a positive thing. It feels like Japan will be a bigger factor this gen, so it might be a good idea to make sure they gain more relevance there. I don't think it's true that Japanese audiences will ignore Xbox just because of the name. They'll ignore it if it doesn't offer them anything they want. Pretending they just hate Xbox and will never care no matter what seems naive to me.

I can't see why they'd start a new studio, in Japan no less, when they could comission games from smaller already existing studios instead with way less hassle. Plenty of decent devs in Japan that basically require publishers to get funding.

Hopefully we see some Recore and more Scalebound. I wonder if they have a few more secrets down the line. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey on Backwards Compatibility would be ace!

For what's it's worth, Gears Ultimate Edition is not releasing in Japan according to Kotaku.

True, and they have to be smart with their investments, but they've tried small stuff before with little to no success. I feel like they really need to massively invest and make a really strong commitment if they want to make waves... but there's no denying it would be a risky and gutsy move.

Unless Phil Spencer attends, this probably won't amount to much at all.

Regardless, I don't understand why MS get so relentlessly mocked and concern trolled for trying and trying to attract Japanese audiences and developers. Console wars aside, do we really want those talented devs to step over to mobile, because that's where they're headed. In fact, they're pretty much there already.

Since I don't work at Microsoft and my livelihood isn't tied directly to their success, I don't care about their bottom line and actually applaud any effort by them to secure deals, no matter how niche. Japanese devs aren't as expensive anyway, I believe, so it's not like they'll have to sacrifice much, and sometimes the relatively insignificant loss or commercially unsuccesful game is worth it, even if only for critical acclaim and the good will of the hardcore.

I believe Spencer, about a year ago, said something about wanting to emulate Sony in that regard. He admired the fact that Sony took risks and invested in games that, while not necessarirly commercially successful, were still great games and added to the platform as a whole.

Truly, I don't see how Microsoft continuing to try in Japan is anything but a good thing that ought to be commended.

Amen. Well said.

Sounds like a tent with some xboxes in, which is about all they should be spending on Japan.

I don't think they should 'pull out of Japan' any more than they should pull out of Spain, they are never going to be growth markets, but they can bring some small amount of cash in if they don't spend too extravagantly.

well said,

Some people here think those games would have went on to the ps4. Which i see zero evidence to that claim.

I really hope this goes well for MS.

That said, reading the thread title amde me think of the old phrase:
"If a tree falls in the woods and no-one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?"

I'm pretty sure that the MS employees could just take the day off, and I don't think anyone would know any different.

I would be happy even if they just announce that Lost Odyssey is going to be BC.
Would love Lost Odyssey 2 but highly doubt it.
But I highly doubt anything new. Will prob see more of scalebound and recore.
Platinum Games doing Phantom Dust would be awesome too.
