Microsoft launches Outlook.com, gives Gmail the nasty eye

If you want a professional address there is this too.... its what I use (but also saved my name as an alias).

http://domains.live.com/

Lets you register your own domain and use it as your ms account (with outlook). Similar to gapps but they give you 500 free accounts vs the 10 with google. I set one up for my family and moved my parents and some others on it as well. The advantage is you control the username and passwords for all accounts should people need to reset them.

If you want a professional address this is the way to go because (and this has happened a number of times for me) people will ask what kind of address that is and you tell them you run your own email... more "impressive" than a standard email account.

Even if you aren't interested in using this atm I still suggest to reserve your address. So many good ones available. I got my first name only, that has never happened.

Smart idea just swooped up like 2 professional emails and 4 others.

Way too late. Already have too many email addresses. Seems like a good option for people who have yet to get an email address or if you could not get the one you wanted on the other services.

Looks great, like the functionality, but the last 20 minutes I can't do anything because of this fucking captcha. Why I don't know.

i wonder if it will be easy to transfer our xbox live gamertag to the new account.

Right now I'm a bit conflicted. Not sure if I want that. I have my first.last@live.com and now a first.last@outlook.com alias. My primary address with which I log into things is still live.com

I think it would be easy to change it to @outlook.com and it would work with other devices like the Xbox. But on the other hand @outlook.com, while great for mails, seems weird for a general account to log into the Xbox with.

thanks, guess that will do

im gonna follow that guys steps and see if it makes migrating any easier

edit: you can use @outlook for neogaf too, huzzah!
hated remembering one crummy isp address for neogaf verif

Does anyone's Gmail import just...stop, or fail, after a certain amount of messages? Granted, I have a shiiiit ton of gmail email, but Outlook/Live just stops importing at messages from 2005.

What does an alias do for you? Is that the same as having firstname@outlook?

yeah, you get a whatever@outlook but it's just an alias to your old account. you login with just the old account, but have the alias available for use and you can sort the mail into a separate folder or in the same inbox.

Unless they finally added the ability to have an email in multiple folders, that's a pretty shitty solution.

indeed, the labels system is easily superior to folders.

Arg, you still have to sign in with @outlook.com after your screen name. I fucking hate that. I like the simplicity though.

Also, I hope this is the final re-branding of their email system/site as I'm tired of having so many because I don't want anyone stealing my name as they are all connected. We have Live, Hotmail and now Outlook. Surprised there is no Bing email service.

I was sticking to Gmail mostly because it worked really well with iGoogle, but with that closing down, maybe I'll switch over to Outlook. Created my professional and junk accounts.

Fuck. Wish I had known this before creating new accounts.

previously you can change windows live id to another id. so if that applies to outlook, then you should be able to transfer your gamertag to the outlook. im not exactly sure though, i did it a few years ago.

Made an account (just for my name) and made it forward to my Gmail account.

Sent a mail from my gmail account and Outlook put it straight to the junk folder. Also the forwarding doesn't seem to work?. edit: Okay, now it seems to work.

+ It looks ok
+ Sign up was pretty fast

- Sign up wanted all kinds of information
- It's slooooow as shiiiiiit on my computer

I'm guessing the other parts of "Live" (or what was previously known as Live, I supposed), like Calendar, Skydrive, and People (contacts) will be re-made to look like their W8 counterpart apps too?

Hah. What do you expect? Gmail is the competition.

Really? It's crazy fast on mine. It behaves basically like a native app. You must have one olllld computer.

I guess he expects his numerous friends that have gmail to be able to email him?
(Well, most of my friends use gmail anyways...)
How do I manage my folders? This is confusing.
In what way? If you want to make stuff filter to folders automatically, and it's a folder you just made, you can click on the folder and right in the body of where messages usually would be it asks if you want to set up rules. So essentially the rules are equivalent to gmails filters.
